As people spend more time indoors, the impact of the built environment on psychological health has attracted growing attention. Yet existing studies often have difficulty capturing decision-makers’ reference dependence and loss aversion under uncertainty. To bridge this gap, we propose an evaluation framework comprising three first-level criteria—Outdoor Environment, Physical Comfort (including thermal, lighting, and color environments), and Acoustic Comfort—and determine combined weights by integrating subjective analytic hierarchy process (AHP) judgments with objective entropy weighting based on triangular fuzzy numbers (TFNs). We further incorporate prospect–regret theory to represent loss aversion, expectation-based reference points, and counterfactual regret/rejoicing, and couple it with the VIKOR compromise ranking method, forming an integrated “TFN + Prospect–Regret + VIKOR” approach. The proposed method is applied to four retrofit alternatives for an open-plan office floor (approximately 1200 m2), each emphasizing outdoor environment, physical comfort, acoustic comfort, or no single priority. Experts assessed the schemes using fuzzy linguistic variables. The results show that lighting conditions, thermal comfort, color scheme, and internal noise control receive the highest comprehensive weights. Extensive sensitivity analyses across value/weighting functions and regret-aversion parameters indicate that the ranking of alternatives remains stable while exhibiting clearer separation. Comparative analyses further suggest that, although the overall ordering is consistent with baseline methods, the proposed model increases score dispersion and improves discriminative power. Overall, by explicitly accounting for decision-makers’ psychological behavior and information uncertainty, the framework enables robust and interpretable selection of retrofit schemes for existing office spaces. Previous anatomic and physiologic studies of the peripheral and central auditory system, with rare exceptions, have relied on the use of tonal stimuli. Here, we test the hypothesis that zebrafish, Danio rerio, can detect and discriminate between two 6 s long complex sounds—a sequence of five multi-harmonic, noise-embedded constant frequency (NCF) tone pips and a chirp sequence consisting of six rapid downward frequency-modulated (DFM) sweeps. To test our hypothesis, we develop an associative conditioning assay, requiring prediction of an unconditioned stimulus (US). A video clip of a shoal of free-swimming zebrafish presented on an LCD screen serves as a desirable or rewarding US and a bullfrog with inflating and deflating vocal sacs serves as an aversive or fearful US. Within our novel “Go-to/Go-away” (or Go/Go) assay, sound discrimination allows an animal to decide to go/swim towards the desirable US and away from the undesirable US within a short time window preceding each US. We use markerless tracking of fish locations following twelve training runs and six test runs to determine if zebrafish can discriminate between the two sounds. We discovered that on average, fish move closer to the LCD screen in response to the sound paired to the rewarding CS and farther away from the screen in response to the sound paired with the aversive US. Differences in locations and longest swim trajectories occur in the 3 s time window between the CS and the US. These differences are largely retained on the second day of testing, suggesting overnight memory consolidation. We conclude that adult zebrafish can both perceive and rapidly learn to discriminate between complex sounds and that our novel assay can be implemented for high throughput screening of drugs targeted for alleviating memory and attention deficits as well as other neurodegenerative disorders. Transgenerational epigenetic inheritance has emerged as a compelling mechanism by which early-life stress can shape behavior in descendants with no direct exposure to trauma. However, whether such heritable modifications affect subtle behavioral phenotypes, like processing of social and emotional stimuli, remains poorly understood. In this study, we investigated the behavioral profile of fourth-generation heterozygous dopamine-transporter (DAT-HET) rats. Compared to control (SX) rats, our experimental group (labelled SIKK) consisted of animals (at G4, F3) born from MIK sires (at G3, F2), who descended from grand-dams (at G2, F1) who were in turn exposed to early-life maltreatment by their own DAT-KO mothers (the great-grand-dams, at G1, F0). To probe inhibitory control and social cognition, we employed the signaled licking / avoidance of punishment (SLAP) task, the elicited preference test (EPT), and the social recognition test (SRT). In the SLAP task, SIKK rats exhibited slower acquisition of passive avoidance, suggesting dampened sensitivity to predictive aversive cues. In the EPT, wild-type focal rats displayed a clear preference for SX over SIKK conspecifics, indicating reduced social appeal of epigenetically altered animals. In the SRT, SX rats successfully discriminated between a novel and a familiar DAT-KO conspecific, while SIKK rats failed to do so, revealing impaired social cognition. Together, these findings indicate that, despite the absence of direct trauma in their infancy, SIKK rats exhibit a distinct behavioral phenotype characterized by increased reactivity to threat and deficits in social preferences and cognition. These alterations reflect inherited dysfunctions in limbic dopaminergic circuits, particularly within PFC. Our study highlights how an ancestor’s adversity can shape adaptive behavior in future generations, providing a powerful model for understanding the biological basis of vulnerability to psychiatric disorders. Stress can alter neurochemical signalling, affecting memory processing, but its underlying neurobiological mechanism remains unclear. Here, we investigate the effect of acute restraint stress (ARS) on long-term retention of aversive memory in rats. We exposed the animals to either handling or an ARS protocol and tested the rats in the plus-maze discriminative avoidance task (PMDAT). Also, we performed immunohistochemistry assays to unveil the effect of stress on neuronal activity. We found that ARS immediately after training does not impair memory formation but hinders retention. Training triggers a peak of C-fos 1 h later and a delayed 18 h increase in Zif268 in dorsal CA1. The same does not occur when ARS is experienced immediately after training. We demonstrated that the crucial role of Zif268 and C-fos signalling in maintaining PMDAT LTM. ARS is more relevant for memory retention than for the formation of discriminative aversive memory. Full article

Cognitive flexibility, the ability to adapt behavior to changing environmental demands, is a core deficit in schizophrenia (SZ), that predicts disease progression. This review synthesizes findings on the neural substates of cognitive flexibility by using a framework that distinguishes animal model tasks by their motivational valence: aversive versus appetitive. While human studies using tasks like the Wisconsin Card Sorting Test (WCST) reveal significant cognitive inflexibility in SZ, particularly in set shifting, rodent models provide important mechanistic insights. The current literature suggests that aversive tasks, such as water mazes, and appetitive tasks, such as the Birrel–Brown discrimination task, engage distinct neural circuits, despite assessing supposedly similar cognitive processes. Aversive paradigms primarily rely on hippocampal–medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC) pathways, whereas appetitive tasks heavily involve orbitofrontal cortex (OFC)–striatal circuits, with significant modulation by dopamine and serotonin. Both valences seem to require an intact balance of glutamate and GABA transmission within prefrontal regions. This framework helps clarify inconsistencies in the literature and underscores how motivational context shapes the neural substrates of cognitive flexibility. Full article

The house fly, Musca domestica L., is a significant human and livestock pest. Experiments used female adult house flies glued onto toothpicks for controlled exposure of their tarsi alone (tarsal assay) or their tarsi and proboscis (proboscis assay) with a sucrose solution containing imidacloprid at either a low (10 µg/mL) or high (4000 µg/mL) concentration. Proboscis extension response (PER) assays were used to characterize the response of imidacloprid-susceptible and behaviorally resistant house fly strains to contact with sucrose solutions containing either a low or high concentration of imidacloprid. In each assay, 150 female flies from each fly strain were individually exposed to sucrose solutions containing either a low or high concentration of imidacloprid by deliberate contact of the fly tarsi to the test solution. The PER for each fly was subsequently recorded at 0, 2, and 10 s following the initial tarsal contact. A significant and rapid reduction in PER was observed only for the behaviorally resistant fly strain and only following contact by the flies’ proboscis with the sucrose solution containing the high imidacloprid concentration. The results suggest that chemoreceptors on the fly labellum or internally on the pharyngeal taste organs are involved in the detection of imidacloprid and discrimination of the concentration, resulting in an avoidance behavior (proboscis retraction) only when imidacloprid is at sufficient concentration. Further research is needed to identify the specific receptor(s) responsible for imidacloprid detection. Full article

The proboscis extension response (PER) has been widely used to evaluate honeybees’ (Apis mellifera) learning and memory abilities, typically by using odors and visual cues for the conditioned stimuli. Here we asked whether honeybees could learn to distinguish between different magnitudes of the same type of stimulus, given as two speeds of air flux. By taking advantage of a novel automated system for administering PER experiments, we determined that the bees were highly successful when the lower air flux was rewarded and less successful when the higher flux was rewarded. Importantly, since our method includes AI-assisted analysis, we were able to consider subthreshold responses at a high temporal resolution; this analysis revealed patterns of rapid generalization and slowly acquired discrimination between the rewarded and unrewarded stimuli, as well as indications that the high air flux may have been mildly aversive. The learning curve for these mechanosensory stimuli, at least when the lower flux is rewarded, more closely mimics prior data from olfactory PER studies rather than visual ones, possibly in agreement with recent findings that the insect olfactory system is also sensitive to mechanosensory information. This work demonstrates a new modality to be used in PER experiments and lays the foundation for deeper exploration of honeybee cognitive processes when posed with complex learning challenges. Institutions may rely on fundamental principles, e.g., of legal philosophy, but may also have evolved according to institutional fitness, as gauged by a society’s well-being. In our stylized framework where two fundamental principles, equality and efficiency, conflict with each other, one of the three players is the third party who faces two symmetric co-players as culprits and determines whether to sanction the two culprits discriminatorily or treat them with parity. Relying on the theory of equilibrium selection, we derived equilibrium solutions and experimentally tested our behavioral hypotheses. We found that asymmetry in wealth between the two culprits let the sanctioning agent hold the richer culprit more responsible. Furthermore, our results demonstrated that when the sanctioning agent’s decision was observable, sanctioning the two culprits discriminatorily induced them to coordinate on an efficient outcome. Aporophobia or aversion to the poor is a discriminatory phenomenon that causes a serious problem to the person with consequences related to damage, injury and physical and/or psychological sequelae. This paper describes the creation of the first aporophobia risk assessment tool, developed through a bibliometric review and expert opinion. This article presents the results obtained in the first phase of the design of this instrument for the detection of victimisation suffered by people in extreme poverty or at risk of poverty due to discrimination or aversion. Initially, a bibliometric review was carried out to identify the risk factors present in aporophobic situations and victimisations related to discrimination or rejection of people living in poverty. For the development of this aporophobic victimisation detection tool, the methodology of structured judgment by means of a panel of experts was used. After identifying the risk factors present in aporophobic victimisation, the panel of experts was formed with the participation of 26 academic professionals and those who work with these people in situations of social exclusion. Using expert methodology and the Delphi technique, they identified the most appropriate variables for inclusion in the detection instrument currently being designed, distinguishing between individual, social and relational factors and, finally, the most influential environmental factors for being victims of aporophobia. The results of the panel of experts highlight some of the following variables, for example, substance use and/or possible undiagnosed mental illness related to individual dimensions, in the case of variables related to one’s social level, among others, a lack of community ties and/or social participation and, finally, among the variables within a context called victim opportunity, the routine of staying overnight on the street or in enclosed spaces at street level by homeless people is highlighted. The experts who made up the panel highlighted the usefulness of this type of instrument for the professionals who attend to these people with different resources; the first version of this instrument is a protocol that evaluates all possible areas of the people of interest in order to detect these invisible situations. Microsaccades are at the interface between basic oculomotor phenomena and complex processes of cognitive functioning, and they also have been a challenge for subtle experimentation and adequate statistical analysis. In the second part of the special thematic issue (for the first part see Martinez-Conde, Engbert, & Groner, 2020) the authors present a series of articles which demonstrate that microsaccades are still an interesting and rewarding area of scientific research the forefront of research in many areas of sensory, perceptual, and cognitive processes. In their article “Pupillary and microsaccadic responses to cognitive effort and emotional arousal during complex decision making” Krejtz, Żurawska, Duchowski, & Wichary (2020) investigate pupillary and microsaccadic responses to information processing during multi-attribute decision making under affective priming. The participants were randomly assigned into three affective priming conditions (neutral, aversive, and erotic) and instructed to make discriminative decisions. As hypothesized by the authors, the results showed microsaccadic rate inhibition and pupillary dilation, depending on cognitive effort prior to decision and moderated by affective priming. Aversive priming increased pupillary and microsaccadic responses to information processing effort. The results indicate that pupillary response is more influenced by affective priming than microsaccadic rate. The results are discussed in the light of neuropsychological mechanisms of pupillary and microsaccadic behavior. In the article “Microsaccadic rate signatures correlate under monocular and binocular stimulation conditions” Essig, Leube, Rifai, & Wahl (2020) investigate microsaccades with respect to their directional distribution and rate under monocular and binocular conditions. In both stimulation conditions participants fixated a Gabor patch presented randomly in orientation of 45° or 135° over a wide range of spatial frequencies. Microsaccades were mostly horizontally oriented regardless of the spatial frequency of the grating. This outcome was consistent between both stimulation conditions. This study found that the microsaccadic rate signature curve correlates between both stimulation conditions, therefore extending the use of microsaccades to clinical applications, since parameters as contrast sensitivity, have frequently been measured monocularly in the clinical studies. The study “Microsaccades during high speed continuous visual search” by Martin, Davis, Riesenhuber, & Thorpe (2020) provides an analysis of the microsaccades occurring during visual search, targeting to small faces pasted either into cluttered background photos or into a simple gray background. Participants were instructed to target singular 3-degree upright or inverted faces in changing scenes. As soon as the participant’s gaze reached the target face, a new face was displayed in a different random location. Regardless of the experimental context (e.g., background scene, no background scene), or target eccentricity (from 4 to 20 degrees of visual angle), The authors found that the microsaccade rate dropped to near zero levels within 12 ms. There were almost never any microsaccades after stimulus onset and before the first saccade to the face. In about 20% of the trials, there was a single microsaccade that occurred almost immediately after the preceding saccade’s offset. The authors argue that a single feedforward pass through the visual hierarchy of processing a stimulus is needed to effectuate prolonged continuous visual search and provide evidence that microsaccades can serve perceptual functions like correcting saccades or effectuating task-oriented goals during continuous visual search. While many studies have characterized the eye movements during visual fixation, including microsaccades, in most cases only horizontal and vertical components have been recorded and analyzed. Little is known about the torsional component of microsaccades. In the study “Torsional component of microsaccades during fixation and quick phases during optokinetic stimulation” Sadeghpour & Otero-Millan (2020) recorded eye movements around the three axes of rotation during fixation and torsional optokinetic stimulus. The authors found that the average amplitude of the torsional component of microsaccades during fixation was 0.34 ± 0.07 degrees with velocities following a main sequence with a slope comparable to the horizontal and vertical components. The size of the torsional displacement during microsaccades was correlated with the horizontal but not the vertical component. In the presence of an optokinetic stimulus a nystagmus was induced producing more frequent and larger torsional quick phases compared to microsaccades produced during fixation of a stationary stimulus. The torsional component and the vertical vergence component of quick phases increased with higher velocities. In previous research, microsaccades have been interpreted as psychophysiological indicators of task load. So far, it is still under debate how different types of task demands are influencing microsaccade rate. In their article “The interplay between task difficulty and microsaccade rate: Evidence for the critical role of visual load” Schneider et al. (1921) examined the relation between visual load, mental load and microsaccade rate. The participants carried out a continuous performance task (n-back) in which visual task load (letters vs. abstract figures) and mental task load (1-back to 4-back) were manipulated as within-subjects variables. Eye tracking data, performance data as well as subjective workload were recorded. Data analysis revealed an increased level of microsaccade rate for stimuli of high visual demand (i.e., abstract figures), while mental demand (n-back-level) did not modulate microsaccade rate. The authors concluded that microsaccade rate reflects visual load of a task rather than its mental load. This conclusion is in accordance with the proposition of Krueger et al. (2019) “Microsaccades distinguish looking from seeing”, linking sensory with cognitive phenomena. The present special thematic issue adds several new interesting facets to the research landscape around microsaccades. They still remain an attractive focus of interdisciplinary research and transdisciplinary applications. Thus, as already noted in the first part of this special thematic issue, research on microsaccades will not only endure, but keep evolving as the knowledge base expands. Full article

Trichinella spiralis is a kind of tissue-parasitizing nematode that causes trichinellosis, a zoonotic parasitic disease that spreads throughout the world. However, the reproductive injury caused by Trichinella spiralis infection was not fully revealed. In this study, we explored the effect of Trichinella spiralis infection on the reproductive capacity in ICR/CD-1 male mice. We identified eight volatile compounds in urine by GC-MS analysis, and the results indicated that the contents of dimethyl sulfone, Z-7-tetradecen-1-ol, 6-Hydroxy-6-methyl-3-heptanone and (S)-2-sec-butyl-4,5-dihydrothiazole were significantly downregulated after parasitic infection, which might lead to the reduction of attractiveness of male mice urine to females. On the other hand, parasitic infection decreased sperm quality and downregulated the expression levels of Herc4, Ipo11, and Mrto4, and these genes were strongly related to spermatogenesis. In summary, this study revealed that the reproductive injury caused by Trichinella spiralis infection in ICR/CD-1 male mice could be associated with a decrease in urine pheromone content and sperm quality. The olfactory acuity of female mice allows them to discriminate the urinary odors of males. Parasitic infection can reduce the odor attractiveness of male mice to females and result in female aversion or avoidance responses in odor selection. However, the chemical signaling changes in the pheromone contents produced by the foreskin gland were not fully revealed after parasitic infection. Cryptosporidium parvum (C. parvum) is a common zoonotic intestinal parasite and has a wide range of hosts, including human, domestic animals, and wild animals. In this study, we immunosuppressed ICR/CD-1 male mice by dexamethasone sodium phosphate treatment. After C. parvum infection, physiological indexes such as body weight and organ weight were significantly decreased. Furthermore, the gene expression level of MUP (major urinary protein) in liver and urine were significantly down-regulated, which could be the reason for the decrease in urine attractiveness to females. GC-MS was performed to analyze the changes in the pheromone produced by the preputial gland before and after parasitic infection, and the results indicated that the levels of different pheromones were significantly reduced after parasitic infection. In summary, this study reveals that C. parvum infection damages the secondary sexual characteristics of male ICR/CD-1 male mice and decreases the pheromone content produced by the foreskin gland. Executive dysfunction is an underlying characteristic of Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). Therefore, this study explored which measures of executive functions (EF) may lead to a better diagnostic prediction and evaluated whether participants were adequately assigned to the ADHD group based on the identified predictors. Seventeen 6- to 10-year-old children with ADHD were matched with 17 typically developing peers (TD) by age, gender, and non-verbal intelligence. Performance-based measures and behavior ratings of ‘cool’ and ‘hot’ EF were used. As expected, there was a significant group effect on the linear combination of measures, indicating that children with ADHD showed significant difficulties with EF compared to the TD group. In fact, significant differences were found in measures of short-term and working memory, planning, delay aversion, and EF-related behaviors, as reported by parents and teachers. However, the discriminant function analysis only revealed three significant predictors: the General Executive Composite of the Behavior Rating Inventory of Executive Function (Parent and Teacher Forms) and the Delay of Gratification Task, with 97.1% correct classifications. These findings highlight the importance and contribution of both behavioral ratings and ‘hot’ measures of EF for the characterization of ADHD in children. Full article

The Dark Factor of Personality (D) describes the common core of dark traits and is a stable indicator for socially aversive behaviors. This study investigated the psychometric properties of the Chinese version of the Dark Factor of Personality Scale for college students using item response theory (IRT). A total of 762 students—251 males and 511 females (M = 19.99, SD = 1.30)—were recruited. Item response theory methods were utilized to evaluate the properties of the scale. Four items with poor item properties were excluded, obtaining a final 28-item scale (D28-C) that included highly discriminative items showing high measurement precision in various levels of the D factor. Furthermore, a test of differential item functioning (DIF) by gender was conducted. The result indicated that the scale as a whole could be seen as gender invariant. Lastly, according to the detailed information provided by IRT and the content of items, a reliable short form of the D28-C comprising 15 items was obtained. The study enriched the existing knowledge of the dark factor of personality in the Chinese background and made some revisions to the corresponding scale to make it a more reliable tool for measurement in China. In addition, the shortened version of the scale based on item information and content helps to improve the efficiency of the measurement. Full article

The primary somatosensory cortex (S1) plays a key role in the discrimination of somatic sensations. Among subdivisions in S1, the dysgranular zone of rodent S1 (S1DZ) is homologous to Brodmann’s area 3a of primate S1, which is involved in the processing of noxious signals from the body. However, molecular changes in this region and their role in the pathological pain state have never been studied. In this study, we identified molecular alteration of the S1DZ in a rat model of neuropathic pain induced by right L5 spinal nerve ligation (SNL) surgery and investigated its functional role in pain symptoms. Brain images acquired from SNL group and control group in our previous study were analyzed, and behaviors were measured using the von Frey test, acetone test, and conditioned place preference test. We found that metabotropic glutamate receptor 5 (mGluR5) levels were significantly upregulated in the S1DZ contralateral to the nerve injury in the SNL group compared to the sham group. Pharmacological deactivation of mGluR5 in S1DZ ameliorated symptoms of neuropathic allodynia, which was shown by a significant increase in the mechanical paw withdrawal threshold and a decrease in the behavioral response to cold stimuli. We further confirmed that this treatment induced relief from the tonic-aversive state of chronic neuropathic pain, as a place preference memory associated with the treatment-paired chamber was formed in rats with neuropathic pain. Our data provide evidence that mGluR5 in the S1DZ is involved in the manifestation of abnormal pain sensations in the neuropathic pain state. Full article
