The accelerated evolution of remote sensing technology has intensified the demand for real-time tile map generation, highlighting the limitations of conventional mapping approaches that rely on manual cartography and field surveys. To address the critical need for rapid cartographic updates, this study presents a novel multi-stage generative framework that synergistically integrates Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs) with Diffusion Denoising Models (DMs) for high-fidelity map generation from remote sensing imagery. Specifically, our proposed architecture first employs GANs for rapid preliminary map generation, followed by a cascaded diffusion process that progressively refines topological details and spatial accuracy through iterative denoising. Furthermore, we propose a hybrid attention mechanism that strategically combines channel-wise feature recalibration with coordinate-aware spatial modulation, enabling the enhanced discrimination of geographic features under challenging conditions involving edge ambiguity and environmental noise. Quantitative evaluations demonstrate that our method significantly surpasses established baselines in both structural consistency and geometric fidelity. This framework establishes an operational paradigm for automated, rapid-response cartography, demonstrating a particular utility in time-sensitive applications including disaster impact assessment, unmapped terrain documentation, and dynamic environmental surveillance. Ocean energy is an abundant, eco-friendly, and renewable energy resource that is useful for powering sensor networks connected to the maritime Internet of Things (MIoT). These sensor networks can be used to measure different marine environmental parameters that affect ocean infrastructure integrity and harm marine ecosystems. This ocean energy can be harnessed through hybrid nanogenerators that combine triboelectric nanogenerators, electromagnetic generators, piezoelectric nanogenerators, and pyroelectric generators. These nanogenerators have advantages such as high-power density, robust design, easy operating principle, and cost-effective fabrication. However, the performance of these nanogenerators can be affected by the wear of their main components, reduction of wave frequency and amplitude, extreme corrosion, and sea storms. To address these challenges, future research on hybrid nanogenerators must improve their mechanical strength, including materials and packages with anti-corrosion coatings. Herein, we present recent advances in the performance of different hybrid nanogenerators to harvest ocean energy, including various transduction mechanisms. Furthermore, this review reports potential applications of hybrid nanogenerators to power devices in marine infrastructure or serve as self-powered MIoT monitoring sensor networks. This review discusses key challenges that must be addressed to achieve the commercial success of these nanogenerators, regarding design strategies with advanced simulation models or digital twins. Also, these strategies must incorporate new materials that improve the performance, reliability, and integration of future nanogenerator array systems. Thus, optimized hybrid nanogenerators can represent a promising technology for ocean energy harvesting with application in the maritime industry. Full article

As the global emphasis on sustainable development intensifies, the integration of digital technologies (DTs) into efforts to address the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) has gained increasing attention. However, existing research on the link between the SDGs and DTs remains fragmented and lacks a comprehensive perspective on their interconnections. We aimed to address this gap by conducting a large-scale bibliometric analysis based on Elsevier’s SDG research mapping technique. Drawing on approximately 1.17 million publications related to both the 17 SDGs and 11 representative DTs, we explored research trends in the SDG–DT association, identified DTs that are most frequently tied to specific SDGs, and uncovered emerging areas of research within this interdisciplinary domain. Our results highlight the rapid expansion in the volume and variety of SDG–DT studies. Our findings shed light on the widespread relevance of artificial intelligence and robotics, the goal-specific applications of technologies such as 3D printing, cloud computing, drones, and extended reality, as well as the growing visibility of emerging technologies such as digital twins and blockchain. These findings offer valuable insights for researchers, policymakers, and industry leaders aiming to strategically harness DTs to support sustainable development and accelerate progress toward achieving the SDGs. Accurate melt pool geometry prediction is essential for ensuring quality and reliability in Laser Powder Bed Fusion (L-PBF). However, small experimental datasets and limited physical interpretability often restrict the effectiveness of traditional machine learning (ML) models. This study proposes a hybrid framework that integrates an explicit thermal model with ML algorithms to improve prediction under sparse data conditions. The explicit model—calibrated for variable penetration depth and absorptivity—generates synthetic melt pool data, augmenting 36 experimental samples across conduction, transition, and keyhole regimes for 316 L stainless steel. Three ML methods—Multilayer Perceptron (MLP), Random Forest, and XGBoost—are trained using fivefold cross-validation. The hybrid approach significantly improves prediction accuracy, especially in unstable transition regions (D/W ≈ 0.5–1.2), where morphological fluctuations hinder experimental sampling. The best-performing model (MLP) achieves R2 > 0.98, with notable reductions in MAE and RMSE. The results highlight the benefit of incorporating physically consistent, nonlinearly distributed synthetic data to enhance generalization and robustness. This physics-augmented learning strategy not only demonstrates scientific novelty by integrating mechanistic modeling into data-driven learning, but also provides a scalable solution for intelligent process optimization, in situ monitoring, and digital twin development in metal additive manufacturing. Green manufacturing has emerged as a critical objective in the evolution of advanced production systems. Although digital twin technology is widely recognized for enhancing efficiency and promoting sustainability, the majority of existing research focuses exclusively on physical systems. They neglect the impact of soft systems, including human behavior, decision-making, and operational strategies. To address this limitation, the present study introduces an innovative hybrid digital twin model that integrates both physical and soft systems to support green manufacturing initiatives comprehensively. The primary contributions of this work are threefold. First, a novel hybrid architecture is developed by coupling real-time physical data with virtual soft system components that simulate factory operations. Second, lean production principles are systematically incorporated into the soft system, thereby facilitating reduced energy consumption and minimizing environmental impact. Third, a parameter-driven programming model is formulated to correlate critical variables with green performance metrics, and a genetic algorithm is utilized to optimize these variables, ultimately enhancing sustainability outcomes. This integrated approach not only expands the applicability of digital twin technology but also offers a data-driven decision-support tool for the advancement of green manufacturing practices. The aircraft nose-wheel steering system serves as a critical component for ensuring ground taxiing safety and maneuvering efficiency. However, its dynamic control stability faces significant challenges under complex operational conditions. Existing research predominantly focuses on single-discipline modeling, with insufficient in-depth analysis of the coupling effects between hydraulic system dynamics and mechanical dynamics. Traditional PID controllers exhibit limitations in scenarios involving nonlinear time-varying conditions caused by normal load fluctuations of the landing gear buffer strut during high-speed landing phases, including increased control overshoot and inadequate adaptability to abrupt load variations. These issues severely compromise the stability of high-speed deviation correction and overall aircraft safety. To address these challenges, this study constructs a digital twin model based on real aircraft data and innovatively implements multidisciplinary co-simulation via Simcenter 3D, AMESim 2021.1, and MATLAB R2020a. A fuzzy adaptive PID controller is specifically designed to achieve adaptive adjustment of control parameters. Comparative analysis through co-simulation demonstrates that the proposed mechanical–electrical–hydraulic collaborative control strategy significantly reduces response delay, effectively minimizes control overshoot, and decreases hydraulic pressure-fluctuation amplitude by over 85.2%. This work provides a novel methodology for optimizing steering stability under nonlinear interference scenarios, offering substantial engineering applicability and promotion value. Full article

Flocculants are indispensable in water and wastewater treatment, enabling the aggregation and removal of suspended particles, colloids, and emulsions. However, the conventional development and application of flocculants rely heavily on empirical methods, which are time-consuming, resource-intensive, and environmentally problematic due to issues such as sludge production and chemical residues. Recent advances in machine learning (ML) have opened transformative avenues for the design, optimization, and intelligent application of flocculants. This review systematically examines the integration of ML into flocculant research, covering algorithmic approaches, data-driven structure–property modeling, high-throughput formulation screening, and smart process control. ML models—including random forests, neural networks, and Gaussian processes—have successfully predicted flocculation performance, guided synthesis optimization, and enabled real-time dosing control. Applications extend to both synthetic and bioflocculants, with ML facilitating strain engineering, fermentation yield prediction, and polymer degradability assessments. Furthermore, the convergence of ML with IoT, digital twins, and life cycle assessment tools has accelerated the transition toward sustainable, adaptive, and low-impact treatment technologies. Despite its potential, challenges remain in data standardization, model interpretability, and real-world implementation. This review concludes by outlining strategic pathways for future research, including the development of open datasets, hybrid physics–ML frameworks, and interdisciplinary collaborations. By leveraging ML, the next generation of flocculant systems can be more effective, environmentally benign, and intelligently controlled, contributing to global water sustainability goals. Rotating compressors are foundational in various industrial processes, particularly in the oil-and-gas sector, where reliable fault detection is crucial for maintaining operational continuity. While Graph Attention Network (GAT) frameworks are widely available, this study advances the state of the art by introducing a Bayesian GAT method specifically tailored for vibration-based compressor fault diagnosis. The approach integrates domain-specific digital-twin simulations built with Rotordynamic software (1.3.0), and constructs dual adjacency matrices to encode both physically informed and data-driven sensor relationships. Additionally, a hybrid forecasting-and-reconstruction objective enables the model to capture short-term deviations as well as long-term waveform fidelity. Monte Carlo dropout further decomposes prediction uncertainty into aleatoric and epistemic components, providing a more robust and interpretable model. Comparative evaluations against conventional Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM)-based autoencoder and forecasting methods demonstrate that the proposed framework achieves superior fault-detection performance across multiple fault types, including misalignment, bearing failure, and unbalance. Moreover, uncertainty analyses confirm that fault severity correlates with increasing levels of both aleatoric and epistemic uncertainty, reflecting heightened noise and reduced model confidence under more severe conditions. By enhancing GAT fundamentals with a domain-tailored dual-graph strategy, specialized Bayesian inference, and digital-twin data generation, this research delivers a comprehensive and interpretable solution for compressor fault diagnosis, paving the way for more reliable and risk-aware predictive maintenance in complex rotating machinery. The rising complexity of industrial systems following the Industry 4.0 era involves new challenges and the need for innovative solutions. In the context of arising digital technologies, Digital Twins represent a holistic solution to overcome heterogeneity and to achieve remote and dynamic control of cyber–physical systems. In common reference architectures, decision-making modules are usually integrated for system and process optimization. This work aims at introducing the adoption of a multi-purpose simulation module in a Digital Twin environment, with the objective of proving its versatility for different scopes. This is implemented in a relevant laboratory environment, strongly employed for the test and validation of mechatronic solutions. The paper starts from revising the common techniques adopted for decision-making modules in Digital Twin frameworks, proposing then a multi-purpose approach based on physics simulation. Performance profiling of the simulation environment demonstrates the potential of real-time-capable simulation while also revealing challenges related to computational load and communication latency. The outcome of this work is to provide the reader with an exemplary modular arrangement for the integration of such module in Digital Twin applications, highlighting challenges and limitations related to computational effort and communication. The growing scale of big data and artificial intelligence (AI)-based models has heightened the urgency of developing real-time digital twins (DTs), particularly those capable of simulating personalized behavior in dynamic environments. In this study, we examine the personalization of AI-based digital twins (DTs), with a focus on overcoming computational latencies that hinder real-time responses—especially in complex, large-scale systems and networks. We use bibliometric analysis to map current trends, prevailing themes, and technical challenges in this field. The key findings highlight the growing emphasis on scalable model architectures, multimodal data integration, and the use of high-performance computing platforms. While existing research has focused on model decomposition, structural optimization, and algorithmic integration, there remains a need for fast DT platforms that support diverse user requirements. This review synthesizes these insights to outline new directions for accelerating adaptation and enhancing personalization. By providing a structured overview of the current research landscape, this study contributes to a better understanding of how AI and edge computing can drive the development of the next generation of real-time personalized DTs. The current paper presents a comprehensive intelligent system designed to optimize the performance of a barrier eddy current separator (BECS), comprising a conveyor belt, a vibration feeder, and a magnetic drum. This system was trained and validated on real-world industrial data gathered directly from the working separator under 81 different operational scenarios. The intelligent models were used to recommend optimal settings for drum speed, belt speed, vibration intensity, and drum angle, thereby maximizing separation quality and minimizing energy consumption. the smart separation module utilizes YOLOv11n-seg and achieves a mean average precision (mAP) of 0.838 across 7163 industrial instances from aluminum, copper, and plastic materials. For shape classification (sharp vs. smooth), the model reached 91.8% accuracy across 1105 annotated samples. Furthermore, the thermal monitoring unit can detect iron contamination by analyzing temperature anomalies. Scenarios with iron showed a maximum temperature increase of over 20 °C compared to clean materials, with a detection response time of under 2.5 s. The architecture integrates a Digital Twin using Azure Digital Twins to virtually mirror the system, enabling real-time tracking, behavior simulation, and remote updates. A full connection with the PLC has been implemented, allowing the AI-driven system to adjust physical parameters autonomously. This combination of AI, IoT, and digital twin technologies delivers a reliable and scalable solution for enhanced separation quality, improved operational safety, and predictive maintenance in industrial recycling environments. Recently, deep learning algorithms have been increasingly applied in construction for activity recognition, particularly for excavators, to automate processes and enhance safety and productivity through continuous monitoring of earthmoving activities. These deep learning algorithms analyze construction videos to classify excavator activities for earthmoving purposes. However, previous studies have solely focused on single-source external videos, which limits the activity recognition capabilities of the deep learning algorithm. This paper introduces a novel multi-modal deep learning-based methodology for recognizing excavator activities, utilizing multi-stream input data. It processes point clouds and RGB images using the two-stream long short-term memory convolutional neural network (CNN-LSTM) method to extract spatiotemporal features, enabling the recognition of excavator activities. A comprehensive dataset comprising 495,000 video frames of synchronized RGB and point cloud data was collected across multiple construction sites under varying conditions. The dataset encompasses five key excavator activities: Approach, Digging, Dumping, Idle, and Leveling. To assess the effectiveness of the proposed method, the performance of the two-stream CNN-LSTM architecture is compared with that of single-stream CNN-LSTM models on the same RGB and point cloud datasets, separately. The results demonstrate that the proposed multi-stream approach achieved an accuracy of 94.67%, outperforming existing state-of-the-art single-stream models, which achieved 90.67% accuracy for the RGB-based model and 92.00% for the point cloud-based model. These findings underscore the potential of the proposed activity recognition method, making it highly effective for automatic real-time monitoring of excavator activities, thereby laying the groundwork for future integration into digital twin systems for proactive maintenance and intelligent equipment management. The integration of digital twins (DTs) with intelligent traffic systems (ITSs) holds strong potential for improving real-time management in smart cities. However, securing digital twins remains a significant challenge due to the dynamic and adversarial nature of cyber–physical environments. In this work, we propose TwinFedPot, an innovative digital twin-based security architecture that combines honeypot-driven data collection with Zero-Shot Learning (ZSL) for robust and adaptive cyber threat detection without requiring prior sampling. The framework leverages Inverse Federated Distillation (IFD) to train the DT server, where edge-deployed honeypots generate semantic predictions of anomalous behavior and upload soft logits instead of raw data. Unlike conventional federated approaches, TwinFedPot reverses the typical knowledge flow by distilling collective intelligence from the honeypots into a central teacher model hosted on the DT. This inversion allows the system to learn generalized attack patterns using only limited data, while preserving privacy and enhancing robustness. Experimental results demonstrate significant improvements in accuracy and F1-score, establishing TwinFedPot as a scalable and effective defense solution for smart traffic infrastructures. The Furuta pendulum is a well-known benchmark in the field of underactuated mechanical systems due to its reduced number of control inputs compared to its degrees of freedom, and richly nonlinear behavior. This work addresses the challenge of accurately modeling and controlling such a system without relying on traditional linearization techniques. In contrast to the common approach based on Lagrangian analytical modeling and state–space linearization, we propose a methodology that integrates a high-fidelity multibody model developed in Simscape Multibody (MATLAB), capturing the complete nonlinear dynamics of the system. The multibody model includes all geometric, inertial, and joint parameters of the physical hardware and interfaces directly with Simulink, enabling realistic simulation and control integration. To validate the physical fidelity of the multibody model, we perform a frequency-domain analysis of the pendulum’s natural free response. The dominant vibration frequency extracted from the simulation is compared with the theoretical prediction, demonstrating accurate capture of the system’s inertial and dynamic properties. This validation strategy strengthens the reliability of the model as a digital twin. The classical analytical formulation is provided to validate the simulation model and serve as a comparative framework. This dual modeling strategy allows for benchmarking control strategies against a trustworthy nonlinear digital twin of the Furuta pendulum. Preliminary experimental results using a physical prototype validate the feasibility of the proposed approach and set the foundation for future work in advanced nonlinear control design using the multibody representation as a digital validation tool. The integration of digital twin technology with robotic automation holds significant promise for advancing sustainable horticulture in controlled environment agriculture. This article presents DigiHortiRobot, a novel AI-driven digital twin architecture tailored for hydroponic greenhouse systems. The proposed framework integrates real-time sensing, predictive modeling, task planning, and dual-arm robotic execution within a modular, IoT-enabled infrastructure. DigiHortiRobot is structured into three progressive implementation phases: (i) monitoring and data acquisition through a multimodal perception system; (ii) decision support and virtual simulation for scenario analysis and intervention planning; and (iii) autonomous execution with feedback-based model refinement. The Physical Layer encompasses crops, infrastructure, and a mobile dual-arm robot; the virtual layer incorporates semantic modeling and simulation environments; and the synchronization layer enables continuous bi-directional communication via a nine-tier IoT architecture inspired by FIWARE standards. A robot task assignment algorithm is introduced to support operational autonomy while maintaining human oversight. The system is designed to optimize horticultural workflows such as seeding and harvesting while allowing farmers to interact remotely through cloud-based interfaces. Compared to previous digital agriculture approaches, DigiHortiRobot enables closed-loop coordination among perception, simulation, and action, supporting real-time task adaptation in dynamic environments. Experimental validation in a hydroponic greenhouse confirmed robust performance in both seeding and harvesting operations, achieving over 90% accuracy in localizing target elements and successfully executing planned tasks. The platform thus provides a strong foundation for future research in predictive control, semantic environment modeling, and scalable deployment of autonomous systems for high-value crop production.
