To examine the effect mechanism of rubber and diatomite on asphalt as well as the performance of asphalt mixtures for road applications, various composite-modified asphalts are prepared using rubber and diatomite. The performance of modified asphalts with various proportions is analyzed, and the optimal dosage ratio of modifiers is determined via the response surface approach. The microstructure of rubber–diatomite composite-modified asphalt is methodically examined using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy. The road performance, aging resistance, and long-term stability of asphalt mixtures are evaluated through Marshall tests, wheel tracking tests, aging wheel tracking tests, freeze–thaw splitting tests, and cyclic freeze–thaw drying aging splitting tests. The obtained results reveal that asphalt with 22% rubber and 4% diatomite exhibits the best overall performance. The composite-modified asphalt essentially demonstrates the physical blending between rubber powder, diatomite, and base asphalt. The asphalt built from them formed a uniform and stable overall structure. Compared with rubber asphalt and rubber–SBS composite-modified asphalt, rubber–diatomite composite-modified asphalt exhibits superior road performance, including better aging resistance and long-term water stability in asphalt mixtures. This study can promote the further extensive application of rubber–diatomite-modified asphalt in road engineering, while providing new ideas for cost-saving and environmentally friendly asphalt modification. In order to effectively prevent and control the rutting problem of asphalt pavement in the deep loess area of Eastern Gansu and reduce road diseases, diatomite was added into the asphalt mixture for laboratory tests. Through Marshall test and rutting test, the optimum mix proportion of the diatomite asphalt mixture, and the optimal mix amount of the diatomite in this area were determined. The pavement performance of activated diatomite asphalt pavement and SBS asphalt pavement in this area is compared and analyzed through laboratory tests and on-site road paving. The test results show that under the same ambient temperature, the activated diatomite asphalt pavement has the advantages of lower surface temperature, high stability, and low-water permeability coefficient than SBS modified asphalt pavement. In addition, by fitting the fatigue test data of these two asphalt pavements, it is found that the fatigue life of diatomite asphalt mixture is more sensitive to the change in stress level and has better fatigue resistance. Therefore, it is concluded that the use of diatomite modified asphalt pavement in the loess area can improve the temperature stability of the pavement, prolong the service life, and reduce the cost of construction, which can be popularized. The fatigue resistance of asphalt mixture is an important indicator to evaluate the durability of asphalt pavement. In order to improve the fatigue properties of asphalt mixture, diatomite and environmental basalt fiber were added. Four types of asphalt mixtures, ordinary asphalt mixture (AM), diatomite modified asphalt mixture (DAM), basalt fiber modified asphalt mixture (BFAM) and diatomite/basalt fiber composite modified asphalt mixture (DBFAM), were chosen, whose optimum asphalt–aggregate ratio, optimum content of diatomite and optimum content of basalt fiber could be determined by Marshall test and response surface methodology (RSM). The multi-functional pneumatic servo Cooper test machine was carried out by a four-point bending fatigue test. Through the comparative analysis of flexural-tensile stiffness modulus (S), initial stiffness modulus(S0), residual stiffness modulus ratio, lag angle (ϕ) and cumulative dissipation energy (ECD), the fatigue resistance of asphalt mixture can be effectively improved by adding diatomite and basalt fiber. Grey correlation analysis was also used to analyze the degree of correlation between the fatigue life and the influencing factors such as VV, VMA, VFA, OAC, S, and ECD. The analysis results indicate that ECD has the greatest impact on the fatigue life of the asphalt mixture. Full article

To optimize the properties of asphalt mixtures and make full use of waste rubber tires, diatomite and crumb rubber particles were applied to reinforce the asphalt mixtures in this study. The rutting tests, the three-point bending tests, the freeze-thaw splitting tests, and the uniaxial compression creep tests were performed to analyze the effects of asphalt types and aggregate gradation on the pavement properties of diatomite and crumb rubber particles reinforced asphalt mixtures (DRPAM). Subsequently, the creep and relaxation characteristics of DRPAM were analyzed by the Burgers model, the modified Burgers model, the second-order extensive Maxwell model, and the Scott–Blair model. The results show that rubber particles and diatomite can reinforce the high temperature, low temperature, and viscoelastic properties of asphalt mixtures, although the improvement effect is weaker than styrene-butadiene-styrene (SBS). Consequently, it is concluded that rubber particle and diatomite compound modified asphalt mixture with suspension dense gradation and SBS binder will have better performance. Full article

To obtain the viscoelastic parameters of asphalt mixtures and analyze the effect of temperatures and modifiers on viscoelastic properties of asphalt mixtures, the creep compliances of the neat asphalt mixture (AM), compound diatomite and basalt fibers reinforced asphalt mixture (DBFAM), and styrene-butadiene-styrene modified asphalt mixture (SBSAM) were tested and calculated by the static creep tests. And the creep compliances of the three asphalt mixtures at −20 °C, −10 °C, and 0 °C are deducted by the time–temperature equivalence principle (TTEP) and Arrhenius equation. Further, the relaxation modulus of the three asphalt mixtures from −20 °C to 50 °C at 10 °C increments are calculated by the convolution integral and Simpson method. Subsequently, the Burgers model, the generalized Kelvin model, and the generalized Maxwell model are applied to analyze the viscoelastic properties of the three asphalt mixtures at different temperatures. The results show that the generalized Kelvin model and the generalized Maxwell model are superior to the Burgers model in describing the variation of viscoelastic properties of asphalt mixtures with loading time. At low temperatures, asphalt mixtures have excellent properties in resisting permanent deformation and releasing internal stress. Besides, the addition of SBS modifier and compound diatomite and basalt fibers modifier can significantly raise the viscosity η1 and the elastic modulus E1 of the asphalt mixture, respectively. A sustainable and environmentally friendly society is developing rapidly, in which pavement engineering is an essential part. Therefore, more attention has been paid toward waste utilization and urban noise pollution in road construction. The object of this study was not only to investigate the mix proportion of waste crumb modified asphalt mixtures with diatomite and basalt fiber but also to evaluate the comprehensive performances including sound and vibration absorption of modified asphalt mixtures. Firstly, the mix proportion scheme was designed based on Marshall indices and sound and vibration absorption properties according to the orthogonal experimental method. Considering the specification requirements, as well as better performances, the optimal mix proportion was determined as follows: diatomite content at 7.5%, basalt fiber content at 0.3%, and asphalt-aggregate ratio at 5.5%. The range and variance analysis results indicated that asphalt-aggregate ratio has the most significant influence on volumetric parameters, diatomite has the most significant influence on sound absorption, and basalt fiber has the most significant influence on vibration reduction. Furthermore, the conventional pavement performances and sustainable sound and vibration absorption performances of modified asphalt mixtures were also analyzed. The results showed that the performances of modified asphalt mixtures were improved to different extents compared to the base asphalt mixture. This may be attributed to the microporous structure property of diatomite and the spatial network structure formed by basalt fibers. The pavement as well as sound and vibration absorption performances of the waste crumb modified asphalt mixture with diatomite and basalt fiber would be a good guidance for asphalt pavement design. This study proposed an asphalt mixture modified by basalt fiber and diatomite. Performance of diatomite modified asphalt mixture (DAM), basalt fiber modified asphalt mixture (BFAM), diatomite and basalt fiber compound modified asphalt mixture (DBFAM), and control asphalt mixture (AM) were investigated by experimental methods. The wheel tracking test, low-temperature indirect tensile test, moisture susceptibility test, fatigue test and freeze–thaw cycles test of four kinds of asphalt mixtures were carried out. The results show that the addition of basalt fiber and diatomite can improve the pavement performance. Diatomite has a significant effect on the high temperature stability, moisture susceptibility and resistance to moisture and frost damage under freeze–thaw cycles of asphalt mixture. Basalt fiber has a significant effect on low-temperature cracking resistance of asphalt mixture. Composed modified asphalt mixture has obvious advantages on performance compared to the control asphalt mixture. It will provide a reference for the design of asphalt mixture in seasonal frozen regions. Full article

Asphalt pavement located in seasonal frozen regions usually suffers low-temperature cracking and freeze–thaw damage. For this reason, diatomite and basalt fiber were used to modify asphalt mixtures. An indirect tensile test was used to determine the low-temperature performance of the asphalt mixture. The influences of freeze–thaw (F–T) cycles on strength, tensile failure strain, stiffness modulus, and strain energy density were analyzed. The variation of the stress–strain curve under F–T cycles was analyzed. The stress–strain curve was divided into a linear zone and nonlinear zone. The linear zone stress ratio and linear zone strain ratio were proposed as indexes to evaluate the nonlinear characteristics of the stress–strain curve. The results show that the basalt fiber–diatomite-modified asphalt mixture had better low temperature crack resistance and antifreeze–thaw cycles capacity compared to the control asphalt mixture. The F–T cycles made the nonlinear characteristics of the stress–strain relationship of the asphalt mixture remarkable, and also decreased the linear zone stress ratio and linear zone strain ratio. The damage constitutive model established in this paper can describe the stress–strain relationship after F–T damage well. Full article

Diatomite is an inorganic natural resource in large reserve. This study consists of two phases to evaluate the effects of diatomite on asphalt mixtures. In the first phase, we characterized the diatomite in terms of mineralogical properties, chemical compositions, particle size distribution, mesoporous distribution, morphology, and IR spectra. In the second phase, road performances, referring to the permanent deformation, crack, fatigue, and moisture resistance, of asphalt mixtures with diatomite were investigated. The characterization of diatomite exhibits that it is a porous material with high SiO2 content and large specific surface area. It contributes to asphalt absorption and therefore leads to bonding enhancement between asphalt and aggregate. However, physical absorption instead of chemical reaction occurs according to the results of FTIR. The resistance of asphalt mixtures with diatomite to permanent deformation and moisture are superior to those of the control mixtures. But, the addition of diatomite does not help to improve the crack and fatigue resistance of asphalt mixture. Full article
