Objectives: Anisakidosis is an emerging, cosmopolitan, and underdiagnosed parasitic disease caused by the accidental ingestion of third-stage anisakid larvae when consuming raw or improperly prepared seafood. Within hours to days of consuming infected raw seafood, patients may develop acute gastrointestinal symptoms including pain, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea and/or constipation, as live anisakid larvae attach to the gastric, or more rarely, the intestinal mucosa. Cases have been reported in which the nematodes succeed at migrating from the stomach upwards to the esophagus and then the oral cavity. Therefore, the purpose of the present literature review is to collect, analyze, summarize and present the relevant epidemiological, clinical, diagnostic, parasitological, therapeutic, and prognostic data concerning anisakidosis localized inside the oral cavity. Methods: An electronic search of the PubMed, Scopus, and Ovid databases was performed with them being accessed for the last time on 29 March 2025. Results: The present literature review identified 13 individual case reports of oral mucosa anisakidosis, which were published in the period 1971–2022. Conclusions: Our review aims to summarize the relevant epidemiological, clinical, diagnostic, parasitological, therapeutic, and prognostic data regarding the oral localization of anisakidosis, a helminthic infection caused by the accidental ingestion of live anisakid larvae and which manifests mainly with gastrointestinal symptoms. Its localization in the oral mucosa appears to be exceptionally rare and, in most cases, occurs with a characteristic clinical picture, defined by the onset of acute mouth or throat pain immediately after the consumption of raw seafood and by the observation of one or more larvae, either lying on or penetrating the oral mucosa. Despite its rarity, dental health professionals and other clinicians should be aware of this disease and the possibility of its intraoral localization, since environmental factors on the one hand, and the adoption of foreign dietary habits on the other, will likely make anisakidosis a much more common disease worldwide in the near future. This study presents a methodology for developing and validating digital models of tooth-inlay systems, aiming to trace the complete workflow from clinical procedures to simulation by involving dental professionals—dentists for manual cavity preparation and dental technicians for restoration modelling—while integrating micro-computed tomography (micro-CT) imaging with finite element analysis (FEA). The proposed workflow includes (1) the acquisition of high-resolution 3D micro-CT scans of a non-restored tooth, (2) image segmentation and reconstruction to create anatomically accurate digital twins and mesh generation, (3) the selection of proper resin and the 3D printing of four typodonts, (4) the manual preparation of cavities on the typodonts, (5) the acquisition of high-resolution 3D micro-CT scans of the typodonts, (6) mesh generation, digital inlay and onlay modelling and material property assignment, and (7) nonlinear FEA simulations under representative masticatory loading. The approach enables the visualisation of stress and deformation patterns, with preliminary results indicating stress concentrations at the tooth-restoration interface integrating different cavity alternatives and restorations on the same tooth. Quantitative outputs include von Mises stress, strain energy density, and displacement distribution. This study demonstrates the feasibility of using image-based, tooth-specific digital twins for biomechanical modelling in dentistry. The developed framework lays the groundwork for future investigations into the optimisation of restoration design and material selection in clinical applications. Full article

Background and Objectives: Dental adhesives augmented with magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) have been proposed to prevent microleakages. MNPs dispersed in a dental adhesive reduce the thickness of the adhesive layer applied in a magnetic field and enhance the bond strength by favoring the penetration of the adhesive into dentinal tubules. However, the restoration’s color has been found to be affected by the MNPs. This study tests the hypothesis that MNP coating can alleviate the esthetic impact of magnetic dental adhesives. Materials and Methods: We synthesized Fe3O4 MNPs with silica coating (MNPs-SiO2), calcium-based coating (MNPs-Ca), and no coating. Their morphology was studied using transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Their chemical composition was assessed by energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), and magnetic properties were measured using a vibrating sample magnetometer. FTIR spectroscopy was used to evaluate the polymerization of the MNP-laden adhesive. We prepared cavities in molar phantoms divided in four groups (n = 15 each) restored using the same adhesive with different MNP contents: Group 0 (G0)—no MNPs, G1—MNPs-SiO2, G2—MNPs-Ca, and G3—uncoated MNPs. The restoration’s color was quantified in the CIELAB color space using a dental spectrophotometer. Results: MNPs-SiO2 were globular, whereas MNPs-Ca had a cubic morphology. The SiO2 layer was 73.1 nm ± 9.9 nm thick; the Ca(OH)2 layer was 19.97 nm ± 2.27 nm thick. The saturation magnetization was 18.6 emu/g for MNPs-SiO2, 1.0 emu/g for MNPs-Ca, and 65.7 emu/g for uncoated MNPs. MNPs had a marginal effect on the adhesive’s photopolymerization. The mean color difference between G0 and G2 was close to the 50:50% acceptability threshold, whereas the other groups were far apart from G0. The mean whiteness index of G2 did not differ significantly from that of G0; G1 deviated marginally from G0, whereas G3 differed significantly from G0. Conclusions: These results suggest that MNP coating can mitigate the influence of MNP-laden dental adhesives on the color of restorations. Full article

Background/Objectives: Dental cavity preparation is a critical procedure in restorative dentistry that involves the removal of decayed tissue while preserving a healthy tooth structure. Excessive stress during tooth preparation leads to enamel cracking, dentin damage, and long term compressive pulp health. This study employed finite element analysis (FEA) to investigate the stress distribution in dental structures during cavity preparation using round diamond burs of varying diameters and depths of cut (DOC). Methods: A three-dimensional human maxillary first molar was generated from computed tomography (CT) scan data using 3D Slicer, Fusion 360, and ANSYS Space Claim 2024 R-2. Finite element analysis (FEA) was conducted using ANSYS Workbench 2024. Round diamond burs with diameters of 1, 2, and 3 mm were modeled. Cutting simulations were performed for DOC of 1 mm and 2 mm. The burs were treated as rigid bodies, whereas the dental structures were modeled as deformable bodies using the Cowper–Symonds model. Results: The simulations revealed that larger bur diameters and deeper cuts led to higher stress magnitudes, particularly in the enamel and dentin. The maximum von Mises stress was reached at 136.98 MPa, and dentin 140.33 MPa. Smaller burs (≤2 mm) and lower depths of cut (≤1 mm) produced lower stress values and were optimal for minimizing dental structural damage. Pulpal stress remained low but showed an increasing trend with increased DOC and bur size. Conclusions: This study provides clinically relevant guidance for reducing mechanical damage during cavity preparation by recommending the use of smaller burs and controlled cutting depths. The originality of this study lies in its integration of CT-based anatomy with dynamic FEA modeling, enabling a realistic simulation of tool–tissue interaction in dentistry. These insights can inform bur selection, cutting protocols, and future experimental validations. Full article

Background: The Hall Technique (HT) in pediatric dentistry is a minimally invasive method for treating carious primary molars by sealing cavities with preformed stainless-steel crowns, eliminating the need for local anesthesia, caries removal or tooth preparation. Objectives: To assess the knowledge, attitude, and teaching of HT among pediatric dentistry faculty in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. Methods: A cross-sectional descriptive study involved 36 pediatric dentistry faculty members from six dental colleges in Riyadh. Data were collected using a validated questionnaire covering demographics and professional information, HT knowledge, attitude, and teaching strategies. Results: Thirty-one pediatric dentistry faculty responded to the questionnaire, and 67.74% of participants use HT clinically, primarily for asymptomatic carious primary molars. Most participants learned about HT during postgraduate residency (61.29%), while only 6.45% were introduced to it in undergraduate training. Teaching practices varied, with 51.61% teaching HT to undergraduate and/or postgraduate students, and 16.13% omitting it from their curriculum. Key barriers to HT adoption included limited undergraduate exposure, misconceptions, and a lack of standardized guidelines. Fisher’s Exact Test showed that gender, academic position, and years of experience were significantly associated with HT use. Only years of experience were significantly associated with recommending HT use by undergraduate students. No factors were significantly associated with teaching HT. Conclusions: While awareness of HT is high among pediatric dentistry faculty, inconsistent teaching and limited clinical use hinder its full integration. Addressing these barriers through curriculum updates and professional development could enhance the acceptance and quality of HT use in pediatric dentistry in Saudi Arabia. Full article

The color stability of dental ceramics in the oral cavity is influenced by multiple factors, including the patient’s dietary habits and oral hygiene practices, which can affect the optical and surface properties of resin-containing dental restorative materials. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of surface finishing procedures and simulated tooth-brushing on the surface roughness, surface gloss, and color stability of resin matrix ceramics before and after coffee immersion. Forty specimens were prepared from a resin matrix ceramic and divided into four experimental groups according to surface finishing procedures, coffee immersion, and simulated tooth-brushing. The surface roughness, surface gloss, and color stability of the tested material were measured, and the data were statistically analyzed at a significance level of p < 0.05. The surface finishing procedures, measurement times, and application sequences affected surface roughness, surface gloss, and color stability. The most significant color differences occurred after coffee immersion; however, tooth-brushing had a more significant effect on the surface roughness and surface gloss. Coffee caused perceivable and clinically unacceptable color differences in the resin matrix ceramics. Tooth-brushing had a positive impact on the tested parameters. This study presents a novel approach by integrating both chemical (coffee immersion) and mechanical (tooth-brushing simulation) degradation processes to assess their combined and isolated effects on a resin matrix ceramic material. The findings provide clinically relevant insights into how finishing procedures and oral hygiene may influence the long-term esthetic performance of such restorative materials. Full article

Bacterial infections caused by resistant strains have emerged as one of the most significant life-threatening challenges. Developing alternatives to conventional antibiotic formulations is crucial to overcoming these challenges. Vancomycin HCl (VCM) is a glycopeptide antibiotic used for Gram-positive bacterial infections that must be given intravenously for systemic infections since it cannot pass through the gut wall due to its chemical structure and characteristics. The aim of this research is to develop VCM in a niosomal nanoform to then be encapsulated in fast-disintegrating oral films for effective delivery to enhance the application of vancomycin-loaded niosomes for treating oral infections and to be used in dental treatments. The formulation of niosomes encapsulating VCM was conducted with various ratios of Span 40, Span 60, and cholesterol as well as Kolliphor RH40 and Kolliphor ELP as co-surfactants using the microfluidic technique. The prepared niosomes were characterised using dynamic light scattering (DLS) for their size determination; high-pressure liquid chromatography, HPLC, for drug encapsulation efficiency determination; and the agar diffusion method for the determination of the antibacterial efficacy of the VCM niosomes against Bacillus subtilis. The niosomal formulation was then incorporated into polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) film, and the properties of the oral film were characterised by in vitro assays. The vancomycin-loaded niosomes produced with optimal conditions exhibited small diameter with acceptable polydispersity index, and drug encapsulation efficiency. This study presents multifunctional niosomes loaded with VCM, which demonstrated efficient in vitro activity against Gram-positive bacteria upon the slow release of VCM from niosomes, as demonstrated by the dissolution test. Oral films containing VCM niosomes demonstrated uniform weights and excellent flexibility with high foldability and a rapid disintegration time of 105 ± 12 s to release the niosomal content. This study showed that the microfluidic approach could encapsulate VCM, a peptide in salt form, in surfactant-based niosomal vesicles with a narrow size distribution. The incorporation of niosomes into fast-disintegrating film provides a non-invasive and patient-friendly alternative for treating bacterial infections in the oral cavity, making it a promising approach for dental and systemic applications. In pediatric dentistry, antibiotics are currently prescribed for both therapeutic and prophylactic purposes. Antibiotic therapy can be prescribed for the treatment of diffuse dental or oral cavity infections, always as a complement to the most suitable dental procedure for the specific case. The aim of this study was to investigate the knowledge regarding the use and prescribing practices of antibiotics in pediatric patients in a sample of Italian dentists by using an anonymous and telematic questionnaire. Methods: A specially prepared questionnaire was electronically transmitted to a cohort of Italian dentists. The questionnaire consisted of two parts: demographic information and general knowledge of antibiotic prescription in pediatric dentistry. The statistical analysis of the obtained data was performed. Results: The study sample consisted of 242 Italian dentists. Poor statistically significant differences emerged between specialists in Pediatric Dentistry and dentists without specialization or specialists in other branches, as well as between dentists who, in their clinical activity, mainly treat children/adolescents or adults. For the complementary treatment of dental or oral cavity infections, Amoxicillin was the antibiotic indicated as the first choice for pediatric patients with no allergy to penicillins by most of the sample, while more than 20% of dentists would prescribe Clindamycin in patients with an allergy to penicillin. The knowledge regarding the dosage of administration of the chosen antibiotic appeared not to be sufficient. Conclusions: An improvement in the knowledge of the Guidelines in Pediatric Dentistry appeared necessary regarding the posology of the antibiotic of choice. More information about the adverse effects of Clindamycin is needed. Full article

Background: An over-the-counter vasoconstrictive nasal solution with oxymetazoline (NS-OXY, 0.05%) has the potential to be used as a dental pulpal hemostatic medicament. A molecular engineering approach examined NS-OXY and its molecular constituent’s antimicrobial and blood biomass removal efficacy. Methods: An ex vivo cavity model was developed where standardized prepared teeth were exposed overnight to a model dentinal caries pathogen, S. mutans, and then exposed to sheep’s blood for 10 min, which simulated a pulpal exposure. Cavity preparations were rinsed with OXY (0.05%), benzalkonium chloride (BKC-0.025%), NS-OXY (with OXY-0.05% and BKC), ferric sulfate (20%;ViscoStat, FS), and distilled water (DI). For examining the bactericidal effect of NS-OXY, a disk diffusion antimicrobial assay was used where S. mutans was grown (20 h) on brain heart infusion (BHI) w/0.5% glucose agar plates and exposed to the treatment groups. Results: NS-OXY-treated samples had a lower residual bacterial or blood biomass than FS (p = 0.003). The diffusion test showed that NS-OXY, BKC, and FS had zones of inhibition greater than 10 mm, with NS-OXY having higher activity against S. mutans than FS (p = 0.0002), but lower than BKC (p = 0.0082). Conclusions: NS-OXY may be considered as a dental hemostatic agent after traumatic and carious pulpal exposure owing to NS-OXY’s antimicrobial and vasoconstrictive properties. Full article

This study aims to analyze the precision and amount of dental tissue removed during overlay preparation by experienced and less experienced operators, with and without magnification systems. Methods: Sixty-four first upper molar Frasaco Typodonts were divided into four groups: experienced operators with magnification (Group 3, EXP+LOU), experienced operators without magnification (Group 1, EXP), dental students with magnification (Group 4, STU+LOU), and dental students without magnification (Group 2, STU). Preparations including an occlusal reduction of 1.5 mm and an interproximal box of 1 mm width. The prepared teeth were scanned and analyzed using reverse engineering software (Geomagic Control X, Oqton, San Francisco, CA, USA) to evaluate preparation accuracy, dental substance removal, and comparison to a control unprepared tooth. Results: The analysis showed that the average reduction was 32.19%. Group 4 (STU+LOU) showed significantly improved accuracy with magnification compared to Group 2 (STU). Group 3 (EXP+LOU) achieved the best result with an average reduction of 23.96%, while Group 2 (STU) had the worst result with 41.28%. Conclusions: Conservative indirect restorations, such as overlays, effectively preserve dental tissue. Operator experience and magnification systems are crucial for preparation accuracy. Magnification improves precision for less experienced operators, reducing tooth volume loss by 9.1%, and enhances cavity design accuracy, ensuring a better restoration fit and minimizing the marginal gap. Background: Polymerization shrinkage of composite resins affects the marginal closure of direct dental restorations. It is responsible for developing secondary caries and indirectly affects the survival rate of restorations. This study aims to investigate the null hypothesis, which states that there are no significant differences in the marginal microleakage of Class II restorations when examined in vitro using different dental adhesives, whether the restoration material used is a composite with glass fiber reinforcement or not. Methods: Class II cavities were prepared on both proximal surfaces of thirty-six extracted human molars. A single-component (Universal VivaPen) and a two-component (Futurabond DC) self-etch adhesive system were used for the restorations in the control group (Charisma Classic) and the experimental group (Charisma Classic with Interlig glass fiber strip). An oblique layering technique and a 40-s soft-start light-curing polymerization were used. After selective pre-isolation, the specimens were placed in a 0.2% methylene blue solution and incubated at 37 °C for 24 h. The teeth were sectioned in the mesiodistal direction, and two examiners examined and graded the extent of dye penetration. Statistical analysis was conducted using the Mann–Whitney U and chi-square tests (p < 0.05). Results: All the composite restorations reinforced with glass fiber showed significantly reduced dye infiltration compared to the control group (p < 0.05). A significant difference (p < 0.05) was also observed between the two adhesives. Conclusions: The null hypothesis was rejected. Glass fiber strips significantly reduced composite restoration microleakage regardless of the adhesive. The marginal fit of the restoration was also influenced by the adhesive system used. Billions of patients struggle with dental diseases every year. These mainly comprise caries and related diseases. This results in an extremely high demand for innovative, polymer composite filling materials that meet a number of dental requirements. The aim of the study was to modify the light-cured composition of permanent dental fillings by changing the composition of the liquid organic matrix. New photoinitiators (DQ1-DQ5) based on a quinoline or quinoxaline skeleton and a co-initiator-(phenylthio)acetic acid (PhTAA) were used. In addition, monomers that have been traditionally used in dental materials were replaced by trimethylolpropane triacrylate (TMPTA). The neutral dental glass IDG functioned as an inorganic filler. The influence of the storage conditions of the developed composites in solutions simulating the natural oral environment during the consumption of different meals on sorption, solubility, and mass changes was assessed. For the tests, fifty-four cylindrical composite samples were prepared according to ISO 4049 guidelines and stored in different solutions. Distilled water, artificial saliva, heptane, 10% ethanol, and 3% acetic acid, as well as solutions containing pigments such as coffee, tea, red wine, and Coca-Cola, were used for the studies. The samples were stored in these solutions for 7, 14, 28, 35, 42, 49, 56, and 63 days at 37 °C. The sorption, solubility, and mass changes in the tested samples were determined, and the trend of these changes as a function of storage time was presented. The results were analyzed considering the nature of the solution used, i.e., aqueous, hydrophobic, and acidic. The properties evaluated changed in a different way, characteristic for each of the abovementioned solution groups. It was found that the type of solution simulating the natural environment of the oral cavity has the greatest influence on the sorption, solubility, and changes in the mass of the tested material. Fracture Toughness of Short Fibre-Reinforced Composites—In Vitro Study

The development of dental materials needs to be supported with sound evidence. This in vitro study aimed to measure the fracture toughness of a short fibre-reinforced composite (sFRC), at differing thicknesses. In this study, 2 mm, 3 mm and 4 mm depths of sFRC were prepared. Using ISO4049, each preparation was tested to failure. A total of 60 samples were tested: 10 samples for each combination of sFRC and depth. Fractured samples were viewed, and outcomes were analysed. EXF showed greater toughness than EXP, with a mean of 2.49 (95%CI: 2.25, 2.73) MPa.m1/2 compared to a mean of 2.13 (95%CI: 1.95, 2.31) MPa.m1/2, (F(1,54) = 21.28; p < 0.001). This difference was particularly pronounced at 2 mm depths where the mean (95%CI) values were 2.72 (2.49, 2.95) for EXF and 1.90 (1.78, 2.02) for EXP (Interaction F(2,54) = 7.93; p < 0.001). Both materials performed similarly at the depths of 3 mm and 4 mm. The results for both materials were within the accepted fracture toughness values of dentine of 1.79–3.08 MPa.m1/2. Analysis showed crack deflection and bridging fibre behaviour. The optimal thickness at the cavity base for EXF was 2 mm and for EXP 4 mm. Crack deflection and bridging behaviour indicated that restorations incorporating sFRCs are not prone to catastrophic failure and confirmed that sFRCs have similar fracture toughness to dentine. sFRCs could be a suitable biomimetic material to replace dentine. Background: The present study evaluated the histological outcomes of two dental restorative materials, polyacid-modified composite resin (compomer) and conventional composite resin, in the primary molars of puppies. Materials and Methods: Twenty sound primary molars in four puppies were used. The puppies were rendered unconscious using general anesthesia. Similar cylindrical Class V cavities were prepared in 16 of the 20 selected primary molars. The teeth were divided into three groups: Group I: Eight cavities were restored with compomer; Group II: Eight cavities were restored with conventional composite resin; Group III: Four teeth remained untreated and were used as controls. In Groups I and II, four teeth were examined histologically after 2 weeks and the other four after 6 weeks. The histological findings were analyzed and compared to determine the effects of each type of resin material on the dentine and the pulp. Results: At 6 weeks, the specimens tested for compomer showed obvious destructive changes in the central region and the region of the pulp adjacent to the cavity. The specimens tested for conventional composite resin revealed, at 6 weeks, massive destruction of the pulp tissues and abscess formation was observed. All the specimens tested in the control group showed normal cellularity, normal vascularity, and proper alignment of odontoblast cells. Conclusions: The teeth restored with compomer demonstrated more favorable pulpal reactions when compared with the teeth restored with conventional composite resin after 6 weeks. Full article

Objective: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the chromatic adaptability and color stability of two different composite resins, Omnichroma and Estelite Bulk-Fill Flow, in Class V restorations at different times. Materials and methods: Standardized Class V cavities were prepared on the labial surface of 34 extracted intact and noncarious human permanent molars. The dental elements were randomly divided into two groups according to the resin composite material. Group 1 was restored with Omnichroma (Tokuyama Dental Corporation Inc., Tokyo, Japan) and Group 2 was restored with Estelite BulkFill Flow Universal (Tokuyama Dental Corporation Inc., Tokyo, Japan). Color properties were assessed using a spectrophotometer, SpectroShadeTM Micro (MHT Optic Research, Niederhasli, Switzerland), at baseline (T0), immediately after Class V restoration (T1), 24 h after restoration (T2) and after thermocycling (T3) (ISO/TS 11405, 2015 protocol). Color difference (ΔE) was analyzed with a Student’s t-test and a Wilcoxon–Mann–Whitney test to evaluate the differences, in terms of chromatic adaptability, between the two materials (inter-group analysis) while Kruskal–Wallis test e Two-way ANOVA statistical tests were used to evaluate the color stability of each material over time (intra-group analysis). Results: Regarding the inter-group analysis, there were no statistically significant differences between the two materials in all the comparisons: T0–T1 (p = 0.9025), T0–T2 (p = 0.2779), T0–T3 (p = 0.4694). Moreover, both groups showed an average ΔE > 2. In the intra-group analysis, no statistically significant differences were observed in either Group 1 (p = 0.954) or Group 2 (p = 0.8654). Conclusions: The in vitro color matching, assessed by spectrophotometry, of the two tested resin composites does not vary at different time intervals. Furthermore, even though both composites use different mechanisms to produce the color the human eye perceives, they show very similar chromatic adaptability. Full article
