Lithium-Decorated C26 Fullerene in DFT Investigation: Tuning Electronic Structures for Enhanced Hydrogen Storage

Hydrogen energy holds immense potential to address the global energy crisis and environmental challenges. However, its large-scale application is severely hindered by the lack of efficient hydrogen storage materials. This study systematically investigates the H2 adsorption properties of intrinsic C26 fullerene and Li-decorated C26 fullerene using density functional theory (DFT) calculations. The results reveal that Li atoms preferentially bind to the H5-5 site of C26, driven by significant electron transfer (0.90 |e|) from Li to C26. This electron redistribution modulates the electronic structure of C26, as evidenced by projected density of states (PDOS) analysis, where the p orbitals of C atoms near the Fermi level undergo hybridization with Li orbitals, enhancing the electrostatic environment for H2 adsorption. For Li-decorated C26, the average adsorption energy and consecutive adsorption energy decrease as more H2 molecules are adsorbed, indicating a gradual weakening of adsorption strength and signifying a saturation limit of three H2 molecules. Charge density difference and PDOS analyses further demonstrate that H2 adsorption induces synergistic electron transfer from both Li (0.89 |e| loss) and H2 (0.01 |e| loss) to C26 (0.90 |e| gain), with orbital hybridization between H s orbitals, C p orbitals, and Li orbitals stabilizing the adsorbed system. This study aimed to provide a comprehensive understanding of the microscopic mechanism underlying Li-enhanced H2 adsorption on C26 fullerene and offer insights into the rational design of metal-decorated fullerene-based systems for efficient hydrogen storage. This study assesses the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on catastrophic health expenditures and income inequality in Benin. A microsimulation was calibrated to estimate the impact of the pandemic under three different shock scenarios: low, moderate, and severe. The analysis relies on secondary data from household living condition surveys. The results indicate that the COVID-19 crisis would lead to a significant average income loss of up to 20% and income inequality, while the number of households with catastrophic health expenditures would increase by 4%. More importantly, the findings reveal heterogeneous impacts across households, with urban residents, younger individuals, more educated households, and male-headed households experiencing the greatest income decline. These findings underscore the need for targeted health coverage and employment policies to better protect vulnerable populations in Benin in the face of future shocks. Full article

In October 2024, a DANA (Isolated Depression at High Levels) triggered torrential rains across the Valencian Community, causing 227 deaths, severe infrastructure damage, and economic losses estimated at €17.8 billion. In this context of crisis, startups, despite having fewer resources and less experience than large corporations, played a significant role in crisis communication, shaping public perception and operational continuity. This study explores the communication strategies adopted by startups during and after the disaster, focusing on their activity on Instagram, TikTok, and Facebook between October 2024 and January 2025. Using a mixed-methods approach, we conducted a quantitative analysis of digital discourse through the Fanpage Karma tool, assessing metrics such as engagement, reach, and posting frequency. Sentiment analysis was performed using GPT-4, an advanced natural language processing model, and in-depth interviews with startup representatives provided qualitative insights into reputational impacts. The findings reveal that startups which aligned their discourse with the social context, prioritizing transparency and emotional proximity, enhanced their visibility and credibility. These results underscore how effective crisis communication not only mitigates reputational risk but also strengthens the local entrepreneurial ecosystem through trust-building and social responsibility. Background/Objectives: The Rapid Access and Stabilization Program (RASP), launched in Nova Scotia in April 2023, aims to improve timely psychiatric care, reduce reliance on emergency services, and provide early intervention. This study describes the sociodemographic and clinical characteristics of the RASP participants and examines their association with acute service use. Methods: This cross-sectional descriptive study used self-reported surveys and administrative data from 738 RASP participants. Descriptive statistics summarized key sociodemographic and clinical variables. Associations between these characteristics and acute service use (emergency department visits, inpatient admissions, and mobile crisis calls) were examined using chi-square and Fisher’s Exact tests. Bonferroni correction was applied for multiple comparisons. Results: The sample was predominantly female (65.2%) and aged 20–40 years (38.4%). Despite high rates of severe anxiety (53.9%) and depression (36.0%), acute service use was low: emergency department visits (7.2%), mobile crisis calls (1.0%), and inpatient admissions (0.8%). Preliminary analyses showed that education level and housing status were associated with ED visits and inpatient admissions. However, these associations did not remain statistically significant after Bonferroni correction. Conclusions: Although mental health symptom severity was high, acute mental health service use remained low after RASP enrollment, indicating the program’s potential in reducing reliance on crisis services. No participant characteristics were significantly associated with acute service use after adjustment, underscoring the complexity of predicting utilization and the need for robust multivariable models. Continued investment in rapid access programs may be essential to improving timely mental health care and supporting early intervention strategies. Full article

The presence of plastics in the soil environment is an undeniable global reality. Biodegradable plastics (BPs) possess several key properties that make them more environmentally sustainable compared to other categories of plastics. However, their presence induces significant changes in soil systems health where they are found, due to a combination of environmental, soil, and climatic factors, as well as the simultaneous presence of other pollutants, both inorganic and organic. In the present work, a review has been conducted on published research findings regarding the impact of various types of BPs on the parameters that regulate and determine soil health. In particular, the study examined the effects of BPs on physical, chemical, and biological indices of soil quality, leading to several important conclusions. It was observed that silty and loamy soils were significantly affected, as their physical properties were altered. Moreover, significant changes in both chemical and microbiological indicators were observed with increasing environmental temperatures. The presence of all types of biodegradable microplastics led to a significant reduction in soil nitrogen content as temperature increased. This study highlights the profound effects of the climate crisis on the properties of soils already contaminated with plastics, as the effects of rising temperatures on soil properties appear to be amplified in the presence of plastics. On the other hand, higher temperatures also trigger a series of chemical reactions that accelerate the degradation of BPs, thereby reducing their volume and mass in the soil environment. These processes lead to increased emissions of gases and higher ambient temperatures, leading to global warming. The types and quantities of plastics present, along with the environmental changes in a study area, are critical factors that must be taken into account by policymakers in order to mitigate the impacts of climate change on soil health and productivity. The global impact of the COVID-19 crisis has underscored the need for novel therapeutic candidates capable of efficiently targeting essential viral proteins. Existing therapeutic strategies continue to encounter limitations such as reduced efficacy against emerging variants, safety concerns, and suboptimal pharmacodynamics, which emphasize the potential of natural-origin compounds as supportive agents with immunomodulatory, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant benefits. The present study significantly advances prior molecular docking research through comprehensive virtual screening of structurally related analogs derived from antiviral phytochemicals. These compounds were evaluated specifically against the SARS-CoV-2 main protease (3CLpro) and papain-like protease (PLpro). Utilizing chemical similarity algorithms via the ChEMBL database, over 600 candidate molecules were retrieved and subjected to automated docking, interaction pattern analysis, and comprehensive ADMET profiling. Several analogs showed enhanced binding scores relative to their parent scaffolds, with CHEMBL1720210 (a shogaol-derived analog) demonstrating strong interaction with PLpro (−9.34 kcal/mol), and CHEMBL1495225 (a 6-gingerol derivative) showing high affinity for 3CLpro (−8.04 kcal/mol). Molecular interaction analysis revealed that CHEMBL1720210 forms hydrogen bonds with key PLpro residues including GLY163, LEU162, GLN269, TYR265, and TYR273, complemented by hydrophobic interactions with TYR268 and PRO248. CHEMBL1495225 establishes multiple hydrogen bonds with the 3CLpro residues ASP197, ARG131, TYR239, LEU272, and GLY195, along with hydrophobic contacts with LEU287. Gene expression predictions via DIGEP-Pred indicated that the top-ranked compounds could influence biological pathways linked to inflammation and oxidative stress, processes implicated in COVID-19’s pathology. Notably, CHEMBL4069090 emerged as a lead compound with favorable drug-likeness and predicted binding to PLpro. Overall, the applied in silico framework facilitated the rational prioritization of bioactive analogs with promising pharmacological profiles, supporting their advancement toward experimental validation and therapeutic exploration against SARS-CoV-2. Prior research often portrays Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) as a coercive institutional force compelling firms to passively conform for legitimacy. More recent studies, however, suggest firms actively pursue CSR to gain sustainable competitive advantages. Yet, how and when CSR buffers firms against adverse shocks of crises remains insufficiently understood. This study addresses this gap by using multiple regression analysis to examine the buffering effects of CSR investments during the COVID-19 crisis, which severely disrupted capital markets and firm valuation. Drawing on signaling theory and CSR literature, we analyze the stock market performance of China’s A-share listed firms using a sample of 2577 observations as of the end of 2019. Results indicate that firms with higher CSR investments experienced significantly greater cumulative abnormal returns during the pandemic. Moreover, the buffering effect is amplified among firms with higher debt burdens, greater financing constraints, and those operating in regions with stronger social trust and more severe COVID-19 impact. These findings are robust across multiple robustness checks. This study highlights the strategic value of CSR as a resilience mechanism during crises and supports a more proactive view of CSR engagement for sustainable development, complementing the traditional legitimacy-focused perspective in existing literature. The development and implementation of microbial consortium-based biofertilizers represent a promising direction in sustainable agriculture, particularly in the context of the ongoing global ecological and agricultural crisis. This article examines the agroecological and economic impacts of applying microbial consortiums and explores the mechanisms of technology transfer using the example of two countries with differing levels of scientific and technological advancement–China and Kazakhstan. The analysis of the Chinese experience reveals that the successful integration of microbial biofertilizers into agricultural practice is made possible by a well-established institutional framework that includes strong governmental support for R&D, a robust scientific infrastructure, and effective coordination with the private sector. In contrast, Kazakhstan, despite its favorable agroecological conditions and growing interest among farmers in environmentally friendly technologies, faces several challenges from limited funding to a fragmented technology transfer system. The comparative study demonstrates that adapting Chinese models requires consideration of local specificities and the strengthening of intergovernmental cooperation. The article concludes by emphasizing the need to establish a multi-level innovation ecosystem encompassing the entire cycle of development and deployment of microbial biofertilizers, as a prerequisite for improving agricultural productivity and ensuring food security in countries at different stages of economic development. The marine habitats of the world’s oceans are being driven beyond their resilience. The ongoing biodiversity crisis is happening fast, within the lifespan of researchers trying to produce the information necessary for the conservation of habitats and marine ecosystems. Here, we report on the destruction of sciaphilic sessile communities and coralligenous concretions produced by the anchoring of a high-tonnage vessel inside a Marine Protected Area in Cyprus. The damage from the anchors and the chains consisted of the dislodgement of large boulders that were dragged or rolled over the seafloor, increasing the breakage and further dislodgement of more boulders; many were left upside-down. The biological communities that thrived in the dark environments below the boulders were directly exposed to high irradiance levels and went through a slow mortality and decaying process, most probably due to a combination of several deterioration agents, such as exposure to direct sunlight, predation, mucilage aggregates, and cyanobacterial blooms. The enforcement of regulatory measures for anchoring and transit in the MPA is necessary to prevent similar destruction. Given the extent of the irreversible damage to these sciaphilic communities, our study is, unfortunately, another environmental post-mortem contribution. Full article

Background: The management of difficult airways is one of the most critical and challenging aspects of emergency and ICU care. Despite technological advances, unanticipated airway difficulty can result in serious complications, including hypoxia, brain injury, and death. This comprehensive narrative review aims to consolidate current algorithms and evidence-based strategies to guide clinicians in the assessment and management of difficult airways. Methods: A comprehensive literature review was conducted using PubMed, Embase, and Google Scholar to identify relevant studies, clinical guidelines, and expert consensus documents related to difficult airway management. The focus was placed on both pre-intubation assessment tools and intervention strategies used in various clinical contexts. Results: Airway difficulty is best anticipated through a combination of history, physical examination, and validated tools such as the Mallampati score. Several algorithms, including those from the American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA) and the Difficult Airway Society (DAS), provide structured approaches that emphasize preoxygenation, preparedness for failed intubation, and the use of adjuncts such as video laryngoscopy, supraglottic airway devices, and awake intubation techniques. Crisis algorithms such as the Vortex approach help simplify decision-making during emergencies. It is important to have adjuncts available in cases of anticipated difficult airways, such as fiberoptic intubation, while surgical airway access is an important component of a stepwise airway management algorithm when critical scenarios are encountered. Conclusions: Effective difficult airway management requires anticipation, a structured plan, familiarity with advanced airway tools, and adherence to validated algorithms. Training in crisis resource management and multidisciplinary rehearsal of airway scenarios are essential to improving outcomes. Full article

Background: Solid Organ Transplant Recipients (SOTRs) face an elevated risk of Sars-CoV-2 infection and poor outcomes if they contract the infection. This can induce or exacerbate anxiety and depressive symptoms. We used the Patient-Reported Outcomes Measurement Information System (PROMIS) Anxiety (A) and Depression (D) scores to conduct a repeated cross-sectional (“pseudo-longitudinal”) comparison of SOTRs’ anxiety and depressive symptoms before and after the COVID-19 pandemic onset. Methods: This secondary analysis used cross-sectional data from a convenience sample of adult SOTRs (kidney, kidney–pancreas, and liver) recruited between 2016 and 2024. The exposure was categorized as follows: “Pandemic Experience” was categorized as PRE (pre-pandemic reference; transplanted and anxiety and depressive symptoms assessed pre-pandemic onset), POST-1 (transplanted before and assessed after onset), and POST-2 (transplanted and assessed after onset). The outcomes were PROMIS-A and PROMIS-D scores. The differences were assessed using multivariable linear regression-estimated means. Results: Of the 816 participants, 588 (72%) were PRE, 135 (17%) were POST-1, and 93 (11%) were POST-2. In the fully adjusted model, the POST-2 group had significantly higher PROMIS-A scores (more severe symptoms) compared with PRE (adjusted mean [95% CI]: 54.2 [52.3; 56.1] vs. 51.7 [50.9; 52.4], p = 0.02). The proportion of patients with potentially clinically significant anxiety was also higher in the POST-2 group, compared with PRE (OR [95%CI] 1.59 [1.0; 2.5]). The PROMIS-A scores were similar between PRE and POST-1, and between POST-1 and POST-2. The PROMIS-D scores were not different across the exposure groups. Conclusions: SOTRs transplanted after the pandemic onset experienced more anxiety but similar depression symptoms compared with pre-pandemic levels. Future research should explore mental health support for SOTRs during crisis situations involving infectious risk. Full article

Background/Objectives: The pediatric mental health crisis in the United States has reached unprecedented levels. Severe shortages in specialized health care professionals, particularly child and adolescent psychiatrists (CAPs), exacerbate the challenge of delivering timely and quality mental health care, especially in rural areas like Kansas. Innovative models such as Pediatric Mental Health Care Access (PMHCA) programs and School-Based Health Clinics (SBHCs) aim to integrate mental health expertise into primary care settings to address this gap. Methods: This paper examines an integrated care model to support SBHCs developed by the Kansas PMHCA. The Interprofessional Child-Centered Integrated Care Model (ICX2) was implemented within an SBHC in Haysville, KS. ICX2 utilizes biweekly collaborative team meetings (CTMs) via zoom involving primary care, psychology, child psychiatry, social work, and school resource coordinators to discuss patient cases and enhance the primary care management of pediatric mental health. This descriptive study analyzes data from January 2023 to June 2023, focusing on patient demographics, case characteristics discussed during CTMs, and recommendations made by the interprofessional team. Results: Findings illustrate the complex biopsychosocial needs of patients seen and define themes of case consultation and recommendations. Conclusions: Integrated care programs like ICX2 can be feasibly implemented through PMHCA programs and may be an efficient intervention to bridge resource gaps. Full article

This case describes a rare presentation of hypodipsia in a 7-month-old female Labrador Retriever, attributed to congenital corpus callosum dysplasia and holoprosencephaly. Chronic hypernatremia in the patient was consistently associated with severe hyperlipemia, which was further complicated by hemorrhagic enteritis and sepsis-associated liver dysfunction. Persistent hyperlipemia was observed during the hypernatremic crisis but resolved following the restoration of adequate water intake and the subsequent correction of hypernatremia. The association between hyperlipemia and hypernatremia is unusual, with only a limited number of cases reported in pediatric patients and a single canine case involving encephalic lymphosarcoma. The hemorrhagic enteritis observed in this patient was suspected to be a complication of the chronic hypernatremic and hyperlipidemic state. This report explores the relevant literature and proposes potential pathophysiological mechanisms underlying the interplay between these clinical findings and altered thirst regulation caused by corpus callosum dysplasia. The function of NK cells in cancer and viral infections is well documented and understood. NK cell activity, including cytokine secretion, cytotoxic activity, and the coordination of inhibitory and activating receptors, linking innate and adaptive immunity, among others, has been examined for numerous pathogens, including parasites, bacteria, and viruses. The emergence of the SARS-CoV-2 health crisis has exposed a deficiency in understanding the previously elucidated mechanisms; the rationale for the reported variability in symptomatology among COVID-19 patients is extensive and intricate. It is evident that NK cells exert a significant influence on symptom severity, and their absence, with the presence or absence of their surface receptors, elicits a tailored response to the virus. This overview examines the impact of NK cells on the progression of several viral diseases, emphasizing their involvement in the pathogenesis of SARS-CoV-2 via the activation of surface receptors. Background and aim: The COVID-19 pandemic, caused by SARS-CoV-2, remains a global health crisis despite vaccination efforts, necessitating novel therapeutic strategies. Natural compounds from Syzygium aromaticum (clove), such as eugenol and β-caryophyllene, exhibit antiviral and anti-inflammatory properties, while host genetic factors, including miR-21 rs1292037 polymorphism, may influence disease susceptibility and severity. This study investigates the dual approach of targeting SARS-CoV-2 via Syzygium aromaticum phytoconstituents while assessing the role of miR-21 rs1292037 in COVID-19 pathogenesis. Methods: Firstly, molecular docking and molecular dynamics simulations were employed to assess the binding affinities of eugenol and caryophyllene against seven key SARS-CoV-2 proteins—including Spike-RBD, 3CLpro, and RdRp—using SwissDock (AutoDock Vina) and the Desmond software package, respectively. Secondly, GC-MS was used to characterize the composition of clove extract. Thirdly, pharmacokinetic profiles were predicted using in silico models. Finally, miR-21 rs1292037 genotyping was performed in 100 COVID-19 patients and 100 controls, with cytokine and coagulation markers analyzed. Results: Docking revealed strong binding of eugenol to viral Envelope Protein (−5.267 kcal/mol) and caryophyllene to RdRp (−6.200 kcal/mol). ADMET profiling indicated favorable absorption and low toxicity. Molecular dynamics simulations confirmed stable binding of methyl eugenol and caryophyllene to SARS-CoV-2 proteins, with caryophyllene–7Z4S showing the highest structural stability, highlighting its strong antiviral potential. Genotyping identified the TC genotype as prevalent in patients (52%), correlating with elevated IL-6 and D-dimer levels (p ≤ 0.01), suggesting a hyperinflammatory phenotype. Males exhibited higher ferritin and D-dimer (p < 0.0001), underscoring sex-based disparities. Conclusion: The bioactive constituents of Syzygium aromaticum exhibit strong potential as multi-target antivirals, with molecular simulations highlighting caryophyllene’s particularly stable interaction with the 7Z4S protein. Methyl eugenol also maintained consistent binding across several SARS-CoV-2 targets. Additionally, the miR-21 rs1292037 polymorphism may influence COVID-19 severity through its role in inflammatory regulation. Together, these results support the combined application of phytochemicals and genetic insights in antiviral research, pending further clinical verification. Full article
