The conventional solar still (CSS) unit faces challenges such as low productivity (Pd) and thermal efficiency (ηth) due to the limited temperature difference between the hot water and the cold interior glass cover surfaces (ΔTw-gi). This study addresses these issues by introducing enhancements in the CSS unit, incorporating a v-corrugated-type basin, internal reflecting mirror, flat-plate solar collector (FPSC) still, and FPSC nanofluids. A v-corrugated-type basin, internal reflecting mirror, FPSC still, and FPSC nanofluids elicited a significant improvement in the distillate productivity (Pd) up to approximately 22.39%, 41.72%, 70.10%, and 104.13% compared to the CSS unit. This increase in the Pd is attributed mainly to a notable raise in the ΔTw-gi, showing increments of around 34.33%, 52.32%, 77.37%, and 112.87% compared to the CSS unit. Moreover, a v-corrugated basin, internal reflecting mirror, FPSC still, and FPSC nanofluids substantially increased the average daily thermal efficiency (ηth), around 22.01%, 26.71%, 39.57%, and 56.21%, respectively. The results confirmed that integrating the v-corrugated basin, internal reflecting mirror, FPSC still, and FPSC nanofluids within a combined seawater distillation system can significantly enhance the performance of the CSS unit. These different combinations effectively raised the basin water temperature (Tw) and ΔTw-gi, consequently improving the overall performance of the solar still unit. Full article

This research proposed a portable wideband horizontally-polarized directional antenna scheme with a radome for digital terrestrial television reception. The operating frequency band of the proposed antenna scheme is 470–890 MHz. The portable antenna scheme was an adaptation of the Yagi-Uda antenna, consisting of a folded bowtie radiator, a semicircular corrugated reflector, and a V-shaped director. Simulations were carried out, and an antenna prototype was fabricated. To validate, experiments were undertaken to assess the antenna performance, including the impedance bandwidth (|S11| ≤ −10 dB), gain, and unidirectionality. The measured impedance bandwidth was 75.93%, covering 424–943 MHz, with a measured antenna gain of 2.69–4.84 dBi. The radiation pattern was of unidirectionality for the entire operating frequency band. The measured xz- and yz-plane half-power beamwidths were 150°, 159°, 160° and 102°, 78°, 102° at 470, 680, and 890 MHz, with the corresponding cross-polarization below −20 dB and −40 dB. The radome had a negligible impact on the impedance bandwidth, gain, and radiation pattern. The power obtained for the outdoor test, at 514 MHz, was 38.4 dBµV (−70.4 dBm) with a carrier-to-noise ratio (C/N) of 11.6 dB. In addition, the power obtained for the indoor test was 26.6 dBµV (−82.2 dBm) with a C/N of 10.9 dB. The novelty of this research lies in the concurrent use of the Yagi-Uda and bowtie antenna technologies to improve the impedance bandwidth and directionality of the antenna for digital terrestrial television reception. The development of efficient plasmonic nanostructures with controlled and reproducible surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) signals is an important task for the evolution of ultrasensitive sensor-related methods. One of the methods to improving the characteristics of nanostructures is the development of hybrid structures that include several types of materials. Here, we experimentally investigate ultrathin gold films (3–9 nm) near the percolation threshold on Si/Au/SiO2 and Si/Au/SiO2/graphene multilayer structures. The occurring field enhanced (FE) effects were characterized by a recording of SERS signal from Crystal Violet dye. In this geometry, the overall FE principally benefits from the combination of two mechanisms. The first one is associated with plasmon excitation in Au clusters located closest to each other. The second is due to the gap plasmons’ excitation in a thin dielectric layer between the mirror and corrugated gold layers. Experimentally obtained SERS signals from sandwiched structures fabricated with Au film of 100 nm as a reflector, dielectric SiO2 spacer of 50 nm and ultrathin gold atop could reach SERS enhancements of up to around seven times relative to gold films near the percolation threshold deposited on a standard glass substrate. The close contiguity of the analyte to graphene and nanostructured Au efficiently quenches the fluorescent background of the model compound. The obtained result shows that the strategy of combining ultrathin nano-island gold films near the percolation threshold with gap plasmon resonances is promising for the design of highly efficient SERS substrates for potential applications in ultrasensitive Raman detection.
