This study ground in the Innovation Diffusion Theory (IDT), explores the value of digital twin technology in cross-border logistics risk management. Using structural equation modeling, it examines how five innovation characteristics of digital twins—relative advantage, compatibility, complexity, trialability, and observability—influence risk management capabilities, specifically robustness and resilience, within cross-border logistics systems. The findings reveal that relative advantage, compatibility, trialability, and observability significantly enhance both robustness and resilience, while complexity does not show a significant negative impact. Furthermore, the study confirms that improvements in risk management capabilities contribute positively to competitive performance. This research not only enriches the theoretical understanding of digital twin applications in cross-border logistics but also offers valuable insights for practical implementation by enterprises. The effective design of logistics platform business models is an important means for platform-type logistics enterprises to gain a competitive advantage. This study employs RRS Logistics as a case study to clarify the dynamic environmental mechanisms of logistics platform business models from the perspective of value co-creation and build a novel structural framework for logistics platform business models with community at their core. The research findings are as follows: First, guided by the idea of “value positioning–value co–creation–value support–value maintenance–value capture”, the conceptual framework of business models is redefined. The key steps in designing logistics platform business models, which can provide guidance and assistance for different logistics platforms, are proposed. Second, the design process for logistics platform business models should be dynamically adjusted in real time according to changes and environmental uncertainty. Third, in the process of transitioning to an ecological platform, logistics platforms’ ecosystem service clusters and ecosystem envelope are key factors in achieving a win–win scenario for all the stakeholders in the community. The case studies show that in logistics platform business model design, methods and key steps based on value co-creation could enhance the core competitiveness of logistics platforms. Full article

In the era of climate change, the strategic importance of forestry products for sustainable development is increasingly recognized. Amid a global resurgence of industrial policy aimed at addressing environmental challenges, this study investigates the impact of China’s central and provincial green industrial policies on the export competitiveness of wood-processing enterprises. Utilizing firm-level data from the China Industrial Enterprise Database and China Customs Export Database (2000–2013), we apply a double machine learning (DML) approach and construct a heterogeneous competitiveness model to evaluate policy effects along two dimensions: export quantity (volume and intensity) and export quality (product complexity and consumer-perceived quality). Our findings reveal a clear dichotomy in policy outcomes. While industrial policies have significantly improved export product complexity—reflecting China’s comparative advantage in labor-intensive production—they have had limited or even negative effects on export volume, intensity, and product quality. This suggests that current policy frameworks disproportionately reward horizontal innovation (product diversification) while neglecting vertical upgrading (quality enhancement), thereby hindering comprehensive export performance gains. Those results highlight the need for more balanced and targeted policy design. By aligning industrial policy instruments with both complexity and quality objectives, policymakers can better support the sustainable transformation of China’s forestry sector and enhance its competitiveness in global value chains. Despite growing scholarly interest in digital transformation, few studies have systematically explored the mechanisms linking digital transformation capability to firm performance. This study examines both the direct and indirect effects of digital transformation capability on firm performance, offering novel insights by incorporating organizational strategic intuition and digital leadership as mediating variables. These mediators align with the emerging emphasis on strategic risk management in the literature. A survey was conducted among 620 high-tech enterprises in the Yangtze River Delta using a structured questionnaire. The data were analyzed using SPSS 23.0 for descriptive and correlational statistics, SmartPLS 4.0 for structural equation modeling (SEM), and PROCESS 4.2 for mediation analysis. The results reveal a significant direct effect of digital transformation capability on firm performance. Mediation analysis further shows that organizational strategic intuition and digital leadership each significantly mediate this relationship, and a chain mediation pathway involving both variables is also confirmed. These findings deepen our understanding of how digital transformation capability drives performance outcomes and offer practical guidance for high-tech firms seeking sustainable competitive advantages in dynamic digital environments. This study advances the theoretical discourse by clarifying the pathways through which digital transformation capability affects firm performance and provides empirical evidence to inform strategic decision-making in high-tech management. In the era of the digital economy, how digital transformation (DT) contributes to economic development has become a topic of growing interest. This study focuses on business model innovation (BMI) driven by DT in the manufacturing sector. From this perspective, we aim to explore how DT can reshape the fundamental connotation of economic development. To this end, we construct a mathematical model grounded in a Multi-Structural Economic System framework and employ econometric models focusing on fixed effects, mediation effects, and moderation effects. We also compile a panel dataset using data from China spanning from 2008 to 2024. The empirical findings reveal that BMI serves as a mediation mechanism between the DT and competitive advantage (CA) of manufacturing enterprises. However, competitive imitation of BMI by peer enterprises partially offsets this effect, weakening the relationship between DT and enhanced CA. These findings offer evidence-based insights into the role of BMI in the digital era. For policymakers and industry regulators, this study provides practical implications for promoting knowledge spillovers from BMI, thereby fostering market dynamism and enabling structural transformation in the manufacturing industry. The Global Talent Competitiveness Index is a system created by the Institut Européen d’Administration des Affaires, based on which we compared China’s talent competitiveness rankings with those of the G20 countries and analyzed the performance of each indicator. Thus, we analyzed the strengths and weaknesses of each country’s talent cultivation policies and then explored the factors affecting them based on their national conditions. The analysis shows that, despite fluctuations, China’s global talent competitiveness ranking is generally on an upward trend compared with other G20 countries. Further analysis of strengths and weaknesses shows that China’s talent competitiveness has advantages in government efficiency, market dynamism, education system, R&D investment, and technological innovation. This study develops an original matrix model to examine the internationalization level of China’s talent competitiveness. However, there are gaps between China and developed countries in terms of labor market policy effects, education matching, vocational education, and key human resources. Drawing from large-scale data, four strategies can be implemented in the future, namely piloting & enterprising, opportunity utilization, threat transformation, and disadvantage adjustment, to improve China’s talent competitiveness. Native forest timber supplies are declining, and industry needs to do more with less to meet growing demand for wood products. An Australian-based, vertically integrated timber manufacturing business is commissioning a spindleless lathe to produce engineered wood products from small logs. The literature on innovation in timber manufacturing was found to generally focus on technical innovation, with relatively little use of market-oriented concepts and theory. This was particularly true in the Australian context. Using a market-oriented case study approach, this research assessed innovation in the business. It aimed to inform industry-wide innovation approaches to meet market demand in the face of timber supply challenges. Interviews were conducted with key personnel at the firm. Data and outputs were produced to facilitate comparison to existing research and conceptual frameworks. The business was found to empower key staff and willingly access knowledge, information and data from outside its corporate domain. It was also found to prioritise corporate goals outside of traditional goals of profit and competitive advantage. This was shown to increase willingness to try new things at the mill and increase the chances that new approaches would succeed. Thinking outside of the corporate domain was shown to allow access to resources that the firm could not otherwise count on. It is recommended that wood processing businesses seek to emulate this element of the case study, and that academia and the broader sector examine further the potential benefits of using enterprise and market-oriented lenses to better utilise available resources and maintain progress towards corporate goals. In the context of macroeconomic recovery and accelerating digital transformation in the post-pandemic era, the hotel industry in China is undergoing profound structural changes. This research investigates the core competencies required for hotel managers to navigate these challenges. Data was collected via a quantitative survey involving a structured questionnaire, was conducted among hotel managers in Shanghai, China, resulting in 404 valid responses. Employing exploratory factor analysis using SPSS, this study identifies seven key competency dimensions encompassing 36 ranked items, including interpersonal communication, leadership, operational knowledge, human resource management, financial analysis, technology, and administrative management. The results show that economic recovery has brought new opportunities but also challenges to the hotel industry, and that managers must possess a diverse set of core competencies to adapt to the demanding new market changes. The novelty of this research lies in its empirical grounding and its focus on the intersection of digitalization and economic recovery within China’s hotel industry. It pioneers a dynamic strategic competency framework tailored to the evolving demands of the hotel industry during a period of economic volatility, providing empirical evidence and advice for optimizing the industry’s talent training systems. Simultaneously, it brings a new perspective for dealing with the recovery path for the hotel enterprises in other urban and travel destinations, aiming to promote industry sustainability and competitive advantages. Future research could extend the proposed framework by exploring its applicability across different cultural and economic contexts. Full article

This study examined how entrepreneurs in the tourism sector can develop competitive advantages in a highly competitive environment. The relationship between innovation strategies, business networks, and service innovation was investigated using a PLS-SEM analysis with a sample of 32 tourism enterprises in Ecuador, namely, Cotacachi, Otavalo, and Quiroga. A structured questionnaire was used to evaluate service innovation, strategic renewal, and the development of business networks. The results indicate that internal knowledge sharing, process optimization, and the creation of new services drive creative strategies. Simultaneously, innovation and strategic renewal are positively associated with participation in business networks. In addition, access to external financing was identified as a key factor in enhancing innovation. These findings underscore the importance of designing public policies that promote tourism innovation through comprehensive programs combining access to finance, strengthened business networks, and internal capacity training. This paper offers strategic insights into the competitiveness and sustainability of tourism enterprises in emerging economies. Full article

This study investigates the relationships between entrepreneurial leadership skills (ELSs), ethical entrepreneurial leadership (EEL), corporate sustainable development (CSD), and competitive advantage (CA) in SMEs. Drawing on resource-based view theory, we examine whether entrepreneurial capabilities and ethical practices jointly contribute to sustainability and competitive positioning. Data from 312 SME leaders across manufacturing, services, technology, and trading sectors were analyzed using PLS-SEM. Results reveal that ELSs foster EEL (β = 0.684, p < 0.001) and enhance CSD (β = 0.453, p < 0.001). EEL significantly affects CSD (β = 0.527, p < 0.001) and partially mediates the relationship between entrepreneurial skills and sustainability (indirect effect = 0.361). CSD strongly enhances CA (β = 0.612, p < 0.001). The findings demonstrate that integrating entrepreneurial capabilities with ethical leadership creates foundations for sustainable development and CA in resource-constrained environments. This research extends entrepreneurial leadership theory by showing complementarity between entrepreneurial and ethical orientations, advances sustainability theory by revealing ethical leadership’s mediating role, and enriches RBV by demonstrating how intangible leadership capabilities generate CA when traditional resources are scarce. Practical implications include developing integrated leadership programs and sustainability frameworks for emerging economy SMEs. Full article

Organizational performance defines how well an organization achieves its goals and objectives. To fulfill these, the organization should improve its logistical competencies including delivery speed, order accuracy, and returns handling. At the same time, social media plays an important role. Therefore, the main objective of this study is to examine and research the influence of logistical competence on the performance of small and medium enterprises (SMEs) with the moderating effect of the competitive advantages of social media. We used a quantitative, descriptive, cause–effect, and cross-sectional approach to actualize this research. A non-probability convenience sampling method was used as it is cost-effective, practical, easy to access, and time-efficient. The main variables, such as delivery speed, order accuracy, and returns handling, were analyzed to determine their influence on organizational performance. A total of 163 respondents participated, ranging from middle to top management employees in SMEs, specifically in Jordan, who completed a structured Google form. Simple, multiple, and hierarchical regression were used to check the hypotheses in this research. The conclusion shows that logistical competence positively affects organizational performance, with competitive advantages in social media campaigns enhancing this effect significantly; this was evident as social media campaigns emerged as an essential platform for marketing logistical strengths and boosting customer engagement. This study and research give recommendations for SMEs to integrate logistics and E-marketing strategies properly. Regarding the study limitations, we see that the regional focus and the small sample size are acknowledged. In the future, research is highly encouraged which looks into industry-specific dynamics, advancing technologies, and cross-cultural contexts. This research bridges the gap between logistics and marketing, thus showcasing a framework promoting logistical competence to gain a competitive advantage in the SME market. Full article

With the shift of the global innovation model from traditional closed-loop to open ecosystems, knowledge sharing and collaborative cooperation among firms have become key to obtaining sustainable competitive advantages. However, existing studies mostly focus on the static structure, and there is an insufficient exploration of the dynamic evolutionary mechanism and multi-party game strategies. In this paper, a two-dimensional analysis framework integrating the evolutionary game and the Lotka–Volterra model is constructed to explore the behavioral and strategic evolution of core enterprises, SMEs and the government in the innovation ecosystem. Through theoretical modeling and numerical simulation, the effects of different variables on system stability are revealed. It is found that a moderately balanced benefit allocation can stimulate two-way knowledge sharing, while an over- or under-allocation ratio will inhibit the synergy efficiency of the system; a moderate difference in the knowledge stock can promote knowledge complementarity, but an over-concentration will lead to the monopoly and closure of the system; and the government subsidy needs to accurately match the cost of the openness of the enterprises with the potential benefits to the society, so as to avoid the incentive from being unused. Accordingly, it is suggested to optimize the competition structure among enterprises through the dynamic benefit distribution mechanism, knowledge sharing platform construction and classification subsidy policy, promote the evolution of the innovation ecosystem to a balanced state of mutual benefit and symbiosis, and provide theoretical basis and practical inspiration for the governance of the open innovation ecosystem. Amid rapid digital transformation in the global economy, digital innovation capability has emerged as a strategic asset for enterprises to cultivate competitive advantages. However, challenges such as the complexity of digital resource integration, limitations of traditional innovation paradigms, and ecosystem fragmentation hinder the development of this capability. Combining innovation ecosystem theory with dynamic capability perspectives, this study analyzed data from 312 Chinese enterprises to examine how enterprise innovation ecosystems shape digital innovation capability. Key findings include the following: (1) the composition, operation, and relationships of enterprise innovation ecosystems exert significant positive effects on digital innovation capability, with the composition dimension demonstrating the most substantial impact.; (2) digital innovation capability comprises three hierarchical components—Digital technological capability (Foundational Capability), Digital technology-enabled Innovation Capability (Evolutionary Capability), and Value reconfiguration capability (Transformational Capability)—all dynamically supported by ecosystem interactions; (3) dynamic capabilities serve as critical mediators between ecosystems and digital innovation capability. Theoretically, this research integrates ecosystem and capability theories to reveal a transformation pathway of “ecosystem embeddedness → dynamic capabilities → digital innovation”. Practically, it offers guidance for resource allocation, ecosystem optimization, and governance, advancing sustainable digital innovation ecosystems. Full article

As market competition intensifies, user retention has become crucial for their success in WeChat e-commerce. A total of 694 valid responses were collected from users with prior experience using WeChat e-commerce offered by SME retailers, and the proposed model was validated using structural equation modeling. The results indicated that the trade-off between privacy concerns and perceived benefits significantly affected users’ intention to continue using WeChat e-commerce. Moreover, the information quality and service quality dimensions were found to directly or indirectly influence this continuance intention towards WeChat e-commerce via privacy concerns, perceived benefits, and confirmation. In conclusion, this study provides insights for further research on continuance intention in WeChat e-commerce and suggestions for SMEs to formulate e-commerce strategies. Full article

Against the backdrop of the booming digital economy, innovation has emerged as the core driving force for enterprise development, with employees’ innovative capabilities serving as a key competitive advantage for innovative enterprises. Adopting grounded theory as the methodological framework, we obtain multi-source data to investigate the factors influencing employees’ innovative capabilities and their underlying mechanisms. Furthermore, we develop a theoretical model elucidating the formation mechanism of employees’ innovative capabilities in human–machine collaboration contexts, identifying four core dimensions—innovation drivers, human–AI collaboration patterns, knowledge conversion pathways, and technological breakthroughs—that dominantly shape these capabilities. Thus, we reveal that the formation of innovative capabilities constitutes a dynamic interplay of technology empowerment, cognitive restructuring, and collaborative reinforcement and demonstrate its spiral progression characterized by “triggering, collaboration, and iteration”. This research not only contributes to academic discourse but also offers actionable theoretical and practical insights for innovative enterprises to enhance employees’ innovative capabilities, thereby fostering sustainable development in global competition.
