Effects of a Positive Psychology Intervention on Mental Health and Well-Being Among Mothers in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia

Background: Concerns over women’s mental health have intensified globally, especially among mothers managing dual careers and family responsibilities. Positive Psychology Interventions (PPIs), such as gratitude journaling and well-being workshops, have demonstrated promise in enhancing mental health; however, their applicability in Arab contexts remains underexplored. This study aims to investigate the effectiveness of PPIs on mothers’ well-being, gratitude, depression, anxiety, and stress in Saudi Arabia. Methods: This quasi-experimental, one-group pretest–posttest study assessed the effects of a four-week PPI on 37 Saudi working mothers (aged 21–50 years) employed at a private school in Riyadh. The intervention included guided gratitude journaling thrice weekly and two workshops on positive psychology and gratitude. Pre- and post-intervention assessments used validated Arabic versions of the Depression Anxiety Stress Scale (DASS-21), WHO-5 Well-being Index, and Gratitude Questionnaire (GQ-6). Results: Significant improvements were found post-intervention: depression, anxiety, and stress scores decreased (p < 0.001), while well-being and gratitude increased (p = 0.001). However, participants with lower household income (<50,000 SAR) showed less improvement, indicating a potential moderating effect of socioeconomic status. Conclusions: The intervention demonstrated promising short-term improvements in mental health and well-being among Saudi mothers. The findings underscore the importance of culturally appropriate PPIs and highlight the need for further research using controlled, long-term designs. Limitations include the small, non-random sample, absence of a control group, and restriction to a single geographic region. Full article

This study examines the influence of mass media on the career choices of high school students from Brașov County, Romania, with a focus on their underlying motivational factors. Employing a quantitative design, it draws on data from a standardized questionnaire completed by 1314 students from local high schools. Descriptive and inferential statistical methods were used in the analysis. While some students identify mass media as a key source of career guidance, documentaries and career fairs are more frequently cited as trusted sources. Students’ perceptions of mass media are ambivalent: 55.1% see it as manipulative, while 41.7% and 24.7% acknowledge its informative and educational roles. Personal motivation emerges as the most significant influence, with 64.8% guided by individual talents and abilities, compared to a lower influence from family or media role models. Correlational analysis highlights the importance of personal development, creativity, and collaboration in career motivation. This study suggests that mass media indirectly shapes students’ aspirations by reinforcing values like social recognition, mobility, and identity. Finally, it reveals a strong link between career interest and expectations for respectful, stable, and growth-oriented work environments, pointing to a pragmatic orientation toward professional sustainability. Almost one in three firefighters develop mental health disorders at some point during their careers, a rate double that in the general population. Frequent exposures to potentially traumatic situations can contribute to symptoms of these disorders, two of the most common being depression and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). While various psychological interventions have been implemented among this group, reports of their effectiveness include mixed results. To this end, the current study endeavored to test the effectiveness of a 12-week intervention combining occupationally-tailored high-intensity functional training (HIFT) and psychological resilience training (RES) in reducing depressive and post-traumatic stress symptoms (PTSSs), as well as increasing psychological resilience and mental wellbeing, in career firefighters. Thirty career firefighters completed four mental health measurements over 17 weeks while anthropometrics and physical performance (i.e., number of stations completed in 20 min during an eight-station simulated job-task circuit workout [T-CAC]) were measured pre- and post-intervention. Pre to post comparisons were made via repeated-measures t-tests. Significant mean differences were observed for T-CAC stations completed, PTSSs, and psychological resilience between pre- and post-intervention. In future interventions, researchers should actively engage firefighters, maximize integration with daily operations, and employ culturally-relevant practices to explore the links between physical and mental health. The sustainable development of teaching expertise in research-intensive universities remains a critical global challenge. This study investigates the distinctive characteristics of expert teachers—exemplary faculty in research universities—addressing their developmental trajectories and motivational mechanisms within prevailing incentive systems that prioritize research productivity over pedagogical excellence. Employing grounded theory methodology, we conducted iterative coding of 20,000-word interview transcripts from 13 teaching-awarded professors at Chinese “Double First-Class” universities. Key findings reveal the following: (1) Compared to the original K-12 expert teacher model, university-level teaching experts exhibit distinctive disciplinary mastery—characterized by systematic knowledge structuring and cross-disciplinary integration capabilities. (2) Their developmental trajectory transcends linear expertise acquisition, instead manifesting as a problem-solving continuum across four nonlinear phases: career initiation, dilemma adaptation, theoretical consciousness, and leadership expansion. (3) Sustainable teaching excellence relies fundamentally on teachers’ professional passion, sustained through a virtuous cycle of high-quality instructional engagement and external validation (including positive student feedback, institutional recognition, and peer collaboration). Universities must establish comprehensive support systems—including (a) fostering a supportive and flexible learning atmosphere, (b) reforming evaluation mechanisms, and (c) facilitating interdisciplinary collaboration through teaching development communities—to institutionalize this developmental ecosystem. Background: Quality care of individuals with sickle cell disease (SCD) is dependent upon education of the providers on their care team. Previous studies demonstrate lack of resident and provider comfort regarding care of patients with SCD, yet none have assessed these in medical students. Objective: This study aims to evaluate the adequacy of the research instrument for measuring medical students’ knowledge, confidence, and comfort regarding SCD and related complications prior to wider distribution. Methods: A self-assessment survey was distributed to medical students at two universities to evaluate their knowledge, confidence, and comfort in general SCD topics, in all clinical settings, and regarding common complications. Results: Of the 98 responses, knowledge (p < 0.001) and confidence (p = 0.02) were significantly different between topics, including epidemiology and genetics, pathophysiology, and treatment options. For “treatment options”, there were significant differences in knowledge (p = 0.02) and confidence (p = 0.02) between medical students at different levels of training. Students felt least knowledgeable and least comfortable with care of pregnant women and most knowledgeable and most comfortable with acute pain management. Caring for patients with specific SCD-related conditions increased knowledge and comfort across all domains. Conclusions: This instrument was adequate for measuring knowledge, confidence, and comfort in caring for those with SCD across all clinical settings. We identified a lack of knowledge, confidence, and comfort regarding treatment for those with SCD starting early in medical careers, which improves after caring for patients with various complications. Thus, educating and providing SCD patient experiences is crucial for medical student management confidence related to SCD. Full article

Early-career teachers (ECTs) entered the profession during the COVID-19 pandemic, a period that introduced unique stressors to an already-demanding career phase. This systematic review examines empirical studies published between 2020 and February 2025 to explore how the pandemic influenced ECT wellbeing, with particular attention to stressors and protective factors impacting long-term retention and professional sustainability. Guided by PRISMA protocols, databases including Web of Science, ERIC, Google Scholar, and Scopus were searched, screening 470 records and identifying 30 studies that met inclusion criteria: peer-reviewed, empirical, focused on early-career teachers (within the first five years), and situated in or explicitly addressing the pandemic and its ongoing impacts. The results of Braun and Clarke’s thematic analysis (2006) revealed that pandemic-related challenges such as increased workload, professional isolation, disrupted induction processes, and emotional strain have persisted into the post-pandemic era, contributing to sustained risks of burnout and attrition. Regardless, protective factors identified during the pandemic—including high-quality mentoring, structured induction programmes, collegial support, professional autonomy, and effective individual coping strategies—continue to offer essential support, enhancing resilience and professional wellbeing. These findings underscore the necessity of institutionalising targeted supports to address the enduring effects of pandemic-related stressors on ECT wellbeing. By prioritising sustained mental health initiatives and structural supports, education systems can effectively mitigate long-term impacts and improve retention outcomes for early-career teachers in a post-pandemic educational landscape. This study examines the relationships between job satisfaction, overtime hours, perceived stressors, and burnout symptoms among academic mid-level staff at German universities, with a particular focus on gender differences. Drawing on survey data from 1442 academics collected in April/May 2023, this study applies t-tests and regression analyses to examine the effects of structural and personal factors on job satisfaction. The findings suggest that job satisfaction is primarily shaped by psychosocial and institutional conditions. Negative predictors are perceived job insecurity, burnout symptoms, and excessive overtime, whereas a strong dedication to work buffers against these. Variables such as gender, age, parenthood, and participation in structured PhD programs did not show substantial effects. Notably, respondents who postponed having children for professional reasons reported lower job satisfaction, pointing to potential conflicts between career and personal life expectations. Background/Objectives: Senior nurses in Taiwan shoulder layered responsibilities shaped by professional roles, gendered expectations, and family duty. Although Taiwan faces a persistent shortage of experienced clinical nurses, limited research has explored how long-serving nurses sustain identity and commitment across decades of caregiving. This study examines how senior staff nurses understand their journeys of becoming—and remaining—nurses within a culturally and emotionally complex landscape. Methods: Interviews were conducted between May 2019 and September 2023 in locations chosen by participants, with most sessions face-to-face and others undertaken via video conferencing during COVID-19. This narrative inquiry involved in-depth, multi-session interviews with five female senior staff nurses born in the 1970s to early 1980s. Each participant reflected on her life and career, supported by co-constructed “nursing life lines.” Thematic narrative analysis was conducted using McCormack’s five-lens framework and Riessman’s model, with ethical rigor ensured through reflexive journaling and participant validation. Results: Three overarching themes emerged: (1) inner strength and endurance, highlighting silent resilience and the ethical weight of caregiving; (2) support and responsibility in relationships, revealing the influence of family, faith, and relational duty; and (3) role navigation and professional identity, showing how nurses revisit meaning, self-understanding, and tensions across time. Participants described emotionally powerful moments, identity re-connection, and cultural values that shaped their paths. Conclusions: These narratives offer a relational and culturally embedded understanding of what it means to sustain a career in nursing. Narrative inquiry created space for reflection, meaning-making, and voice in a system where such voices are often unheard. Identity was not static—it was lived, reshaped, and held in story. The highway and bridge industry is facing persistent challenges related to the high turnover of technical personnel, which poses risks to the continuity and sustainability of infrastructure development. Although Geographic Information System (GIS) training has increasingly been advocated as a strategy to stabilize the workforce, its practical application remains relatively limited across China. Drawing on the Conservation of Resources (COR) theory, this study examines whether GIS training is associated with lower turnover intention among technical staff, potentially through enhanced perceptions of career growth and reduced work-related anxiety. Based on 412 valid responses—primarily from technical personnel employed by major infrastructure enterprises such as regional subsidiaries of the China Communications Construction Group (CCCG) and China State Construction Engineering Corporation (CSCEC)—the study employs Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM) to assess the proposed relationships. The findings indicate that GIS training is negatively associated with turnover intention, with career growth partially mediating this association. Additionally, work anxiety moderates the relationship, such that the link between GIS training and turnover intention appears weaker under higher levels of anxiety. This research contributes to bridging the gap between training practices and theoretical understanding, offering insights to inform workforce retention strategies in technology-intensive industries. The sustainable integration of technology into educational practices is pivotal for modern teaching and learning. Grounded in the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM), this study explores the psychological and contextual factors that influence technology acceptance among pre-service and in-service teachers. Employing a nonexperimental, cross-sectional design, data were collected from 347 participants to examine the relationships between perceived usefulness, perceived ease of use, attitude toward use, behavioural intention, and actual system use. Results indicate that pre-service teachers demonstrate stronger openness to technology adoption, driven primarily by attitudinal factors, whereas in-service teachers’ acceptance is more closely linked to perceived utility and usability. This study advances the TAM by integrating a dual serial mediation model and testing the moderating role of professional status, thereby offering a nuanced understanding of sustainable digital engagement across career stages. Our findings underscore the importance of fostering positive perceptions and providing differentiated support throughout teachers’ professional trajectories to achieve long-term, meaningful technology adoption in education. With the accelerating globalization and rapid development of science and technology, scientific collaboration has become a key driver of knowledge production, yet its patterns vary significantly across disciplines. This study aims to explore the disciplinary differences in scholars’ scientific collaboration patterns and their underlying mechanisms. Data were collected from the China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI) database, covering papers from four disciplines: mathematics, mechanical engineering, philosophy, and sociology. Using social network analysis, we examined core network metrics (degree centrality, neighbor connectivity, clustering coefficient) in collaboration networks, analyzed collaboration patterns across scholars of different academic ages, and compared the academic age distribution of collaborators and network characteristics across career stages. Key findings include the following. (1) Mechanical engineering exhibits the highest and most stable clustering coefficient (mean 0.62) across all academic ages, reflecting tight team collaboration, with degree centrality increasing fastest with academic age (3.2 times higher for senior vs. beginner scholars), driven by its reliance on experimental resources and skill division. (2) Philosophy shows high degree centrality in early career stages (mean 0.38 for beginners) but a sharp decline in clustering coefficient in senior stages (from 0.42 to 0.17), indicating broad early collaboration but loose later ties due to individualized knowledge production. (3) Mathematics scholars prefer collaborating with high-centrality peers (higher neighbor connectivity, mean 0.51), while sociology shows more inclusive collaboration with dispersed partner centrality. Objective: As performance progression provides an essential indicator for talent selection and development, this study aimed to compare annual swimming performance progression between different competitive levels and to establish benchmarks for long-term athlete development. Methods: Annual best times of swimmers who competed up to the age of 21 years and achieved over 450 World Aquatics points were extracted from the database of European Aquatics. A total of 13,310 male and 7798 female pool swimmers of all race distances were grouped into three performance levels. Results: The results showed a continuous decline in annual performance progression throughout the years across all race distances (all p < 0.001) and in both sexes. There were differences between performance level across the age groups for all race distances in male swimmers, but only for the 100–400 m races in females (p < 0.05). Absolute performance showed significant main effects for level and age over all race distances for both sexes (all p < 0.001). Conclusions: Annual performance progression of swimmers consistently decreases across the competitive lifetime in both sexes, regardless of race distance and performance level. The event-specific benchmarks should be used as a framework to set realistic goals for both sexes and swimmers of different competitive levels, as well as to guide swimmers throughout their careers. As the labor market has tightened and businesses have increased their part-time and hourly wages, recruiting and retaining high-quality college students to work on campus in part-time and hourly roles has remained a stubbornly problematic issue. As a result, this study provides a unique perspective into the minds of student workers by leveraging NASPA/ACPA’s professional competency areas and Tull’s synergistic supervision as conceptual and theoretical frameworks to understand how a subset of college student workers view supervisors in recruiting and retaining them, as well as providing pre-professional development opportunities. Through semi-structured qualitative focus groups with 54 college students working as peer financial mentors within student affairs units, qualitative data suggest that student workers view supervisors as critical to their recruitment if the work is positioned as flexible and career-oriented. Moreover, student workers appreciated supervisors who promised and then delivered professional development during employment, preparing them for the workforce. Additionally, student workers want and need a supervisor who builds a professional relationship with them and who empowers them to develop a sense of confidence through their work. Implications for student affairs research, policy, and practice are addressed. Full article

Background: Prematurity and low birth weight (LBW) drive infant morbidity and mortality, requiring nutritional interventions, especially in food-insecure settings. In Indonesia, regional disparities in food security hinder adequate nutrition for premature and LBW infants, exacerbating health challenges. The aim of study is to investigate and determine factors associated with prematurity and LBW in children from food-insecure and food-secure households. Methods: This research employed a cross-sectional study with 657 mothers of children aged 36–59 months, conducted using random sampling. Data was collected via standardized questionnaires and analyzed using Chi-square tests and logistic regression. Results: The adjusted model showed that children of food-insecure households had a higher risk of LBW (AOR = 0.54; 95% CI: 0.29–0.99; p < 0.05). LBWs were found to significantly less occur in food-insecure households. Low maternal education was associated with an increased risk of preterm birth (AOR = 3.23; 95% CI:1.78–5.84; p < 0.001). Furthermore, prematurity correlated with house ownership (p < 0.01), indicating the household’s wealth condition. Maternal education and house ownership were linked to prematurity, indicating the risk to child health outcomes. In summary, maternal education, employment status, and household income were linked to food insecurity, indicating the risk to child health outcomes. Conclusion: Strategies to improve child health outcomes are essential, including enhancing maternal nutrition knowledge to improve child feeding practices, promoting gender equality in career development, and reducing food insecurity in households. Impact of Stress on Adrenal and Neuroendocrine Responses, Body Composition, and Physical Performance Amongst Women in Demanding Tactical Occupations: A Scoping Review

Background/Objectives: This scoping review critically evaluated existing literature and summarized the impact of occupational, physiological, and psychological stressors on adrenal and neuroendocrine responses, body composition, and physical performance amongst women in tactical occupations. Methods: Boolean searches identified potentially qualifying reports involving: (1) adult women (≥19 y) currently employed or completing their training for a tactical profession; (2) ≥1 marker of “stress”; and (3) ≥1 adrenal, neuroendocrine, body composition, or fitness/performance outcome. Quantitative data (e.g., sample characteristics, outcomes of interest) were extracted and summarized. The completeness of reporting for each study was documented using existing checklists and quantified as: low (<50%), moderate (50–79%), or high (≥80%). Results: 40 studies (k) of moderate reporting quality (~64%) were included in the final sample (3693 women); 11 studies (28%) focused on women exclusively, and 16 studies identified sex differences in ≥1 outcome. Most studies involved military trainee populations (80%, k = 32). Occupation-related stress tended to negatively impact adrenal, neuroendocrine, body composition, and performance outcomes. Conclusions: This review highlights progress in assessing occupational performance in female tactical personnel exposed to diverse stressors; however, our understanding remains incomplete due to methodological and conceptual limitations in the literature. Holistic research strategies are needed to capture the complexity of performance readiness in women, integrating how stress affects key tactical performance aspects such as muscle physiology, reproductive health, and energy and nutrient balance in realistic operational contexts. Integrating such data is vital for informing policy, improving readiness, and enhancing the health and career longevity of female tactical personnel. Full article
