Electromyography (EMG) has become essential in biomedical engineering, rehabilitation, and human–machine interfacing due to its ability to capture neuromuscular activation for control, monitoring, and diagnosis. Recent advances in sensing hardware, high-density and flexible electrodes, and embedded acquisition modules combined with modern signal processing and machine learning have significantly enhanced the robustness and applicability of EMG-based systems. This review provides an integrated overview of EMG generation, acquisition standards, and preprocessing techniques, including adaptive filtering, wavelet denoising, and empirical mode decomposition. Feature extraction methods across the time, frequency, time–frequency, and nonlinear domains are compared with respect to computational efficiency and suitability for real-time systems. The review synthesizes classical and contemporary pattern-recognition approaches, from statistical classifiers to deep architectures such as CNNs, RNNs, hybrid CNN–RNN models, transformer-based networks, and graph neural networks. Key challenges, including signal non-stationarity, electrode displacement, muscle fatigue, and poor cross-user or cross-session generalization, are examined alongside emerging strategies such as transfer learning, domain adaptation, and multimodal fusion with IMU or FMG signals. Finally, the paper surveys rapidly growing EMG applications in prosthetics, rehabilitation robotics, human–machine interfaces, clinical diagnostics, and sports analytics. The review highlights ongoing limitations and outlines future pathways toward robust, adaptive, and deployable EMG-driven intelligent systems. Full article

This paper proposes TWISS (TOPSIS + Wrapper Incremental Subset Selection), a novel hybrid feature selection framework designed for electromyographic (EMG) pattern recognition in upper-limb prosthetic control. TWISS integrates the multi-criteria decision-making method TOPSIS with a forward wrapper search strategy, enabling subject-specific feature optimization based on a ranking that combines filter metrics, including Chi-squared, ANOVA, and Mutual Information. Unlike conventional static feature sets, such as the Hudgins configuration (48 features: four per channel, 12 channels) or All Features (192 features: 16 per channel, 12 channels), TWISS dynamically adapts feature subsets to each subject, addressing inter-subject variability and classification robustness challenges in EMG systems. The proposed algorithm was evaluated on the publicly available Ninapro DB7 dataset, comprising both intact and transradial amputee participants, and implemented in an open-source, fully reproducible environment. Two Google Colab tools were developed to support diverse workflows: one for end-to-end feature extraction and selection, and another for selection on precomputed feature sets. Experimental results demonstrated that TWISS achieved a median F1-macro score of 0.6614 with Logistic Regression, outperforming the All Features set (0.6536) and significantly surpassing the Hudgins set (0.5626) while reducing feature dimensionality. TWISS offers a scalable and computationally efficient solution for feature selection in biomedical signal processing and beyond, promoting the development of personalized, low-cost prosthetic control systems and other resource-constrained applications. Classifying study objects into groups is facilitated by fuzzy classifiers based on a set of rules and membership functions. Typically, the characteristics of the study objects are used to establish the criteria for classification. This work arises from the need to design fuzzy classifiers in contexts where real data is scarce or highly random, proposing a design based on statistics and chaotic maps that simplifies the design process. This study introduces the development of a fuzzy classifier, assuming that three features of the population to be classified are random variables. A Mamdani fuzzy inference system and three pseudorandom number generators based on one-dimensional chaotic maps are utilized to achieve this. The logistic, Bernoulli, and tent chaotic maps are implemented to emulate the random features of the target population, and their statistical distribution functions serve as input to the fuzzy inference system. Four experimental tests were conducted to demonstrate the functionality of the proposed classifier. The results show that it is possible to achieve a symmetric and robust classification through simple adjustments to membership functions, without the need for supervised training, which represents a significant methodological contribution, especially because this indicates that designers with minimal experience can build effective classifiers in just a few steps. Real applications of the proposed design may focus on the classification of biomedical signals (sEMG), network traffic, and personalized medical assistance systems, where data exhibits high variability and randomness. Neuromuscular robotic prostheses have emerged as a critical convergence point between biomedical engineering, machine learning, and human–machine interfaces. This work provides a narrative state-of-the-art review regarding recent developments in robotic prosthetic technology, emphasizing sensor integration, actuator architectures, signal acquisition, and algorithmic strategies for intent decoding. Special focus is given to non-invasive biosignal modalities, particularly surface electromyography (sEMG), as well as invasive approaches involving direct neural interfacing. Recent developments in AI-driven signal processing, including deep learning and hybrid models for robust classification and regression of user intent, are also examined. Furthermore, the integration of real-time adaptive control systems with surgical techniques like Targeted Muscle Reinnervation (TMR) is evaluated for its role in enhancing proprioception and functional embodiment. Finally, this review highlights the growing importance of modular, open-source frameworks and additive manufacturing in accelerating prototyping and customization. Progress in this domain will depend on continued interdisciplinary research bridging artificial intelligence, neurophysiology, materials science, and real-time embedded systems to enable the next generation of intelligent prosthetic devices. Health and well-being, both mental and physical, depend largely on adequate sleep. Many conditions arise from a disrupted sleep cycle, significantly deteriorating the quality of life of those affected. The analysis of the sleep cycle provide valuable information about sleep stages, which are employed in sleep medicine for the diagnosis of numerous diseases. The clinical standard for sleep data recording is polysomnography (PSG), which records electroencephalogram (EEG), electrooculogram (EOG), electromyogram (EMG), and other signals during sleep activity. Recently, machine learning approaches have exhibited high accuracy in applications such as the classification and prediction of biomedical signals. This study presents a hybrid neural network architecture composed of convolutional neural network (CNN) layers, bidirectional long short-term memory (BiLSTM) layers, and attention mechanism layers in order to process large volumes of EEG data in PSG files. The objective is to design a framework for automated feature extraction. To address class imbalance, an epoch-level random undersampling (E-LRUS) method is proposed, discarding full epochs from majority classes while preserving the temporal structure, unlike traditional methods that remove individual samples. This method has been tested on EEG recordings acquired from the public Sleep EDF Expanded database, achieving an overall accuracy rate of 78.67% along with an F1-score of 72.10%. The findings show that this method proves to be effective for sleep stage classification in patients. Full article

This article provides an overview of the implementation of electromyography (EMG) signal classification algorithms in various embedded system architectures. They address the specifications used for implementation in different devices, such as the number of movements and the type of classification method. Architectures analyzed include microcontrollers, DSP, FPGA, SoC, and neuromorphic computers/chips in terms of precision, processing time, energy consumption, and cost. This analysis highlights the capabilities of each technology for real-time wearable applications such as smart prosthetics and gesture control devices, as well as the importance of local inference in artificial intelligence models to minimize execution times and resource consumption. The results show that the choice of device depends on the required system specifications, the robustness of the model, the number of movements to be classified, and the limits of knowledge concerning design and budget. This work provides a reference for selecting technologies for developing embedded biomedical solutions based on EMG. Full article

The development of robust circuit structures remains a pivotal milestone in electronic device research. This article proposes an integrated hardware–software system designed for the acquisition, processing, and analysis of surface electromyographic (sEMG) signals. The system analyzes sEMG signals to understand muscle function and neuromuscular control, employing convolutional neural networks (CNNs) for pattern recognition. The electrical signals analyzed on healthy and unhealthy subjects are acquired using a meticulously developed integrated circuit system featuring biopotential acquisition electrodes. The signals captured in the database are extracted, classified, and interpreted by the application of CNNs with the aim of identifying patterns indicative of neuromuscular problems. By leveraging advanced learning techniques, the proposed method addresses the non-stationary nature of sEMG recordings and mitigates cross-talk effects commonly observed in electrical interference patterns captured by surface sensors. The integration of an AI algorithm with the signal acquisition device enhances the qualitative outcomes by eliminating redundant information. CNNs reveals their effectiveness in accurately deciphering complex data patterns from sEMG signals, identifying subjects with neuromuscular problems with high precision. This paper contributes to the landscape of biomedical research, advocating for the integration of advanced computational techniques to unravel complex physiological phenomena and enhance the utility of sEMG signal analysis. Surface electromyography is a technique used to measure the electrical activity of muscles. sEMG can be used to assess muscle function in various settings, including clinical, academic/industrial research, and sports medicine. The aim of this study is to develop a wearable textile sensor for continuous sEMG monitoring. Here, we have developed an integrated biomedical monitoring system that records sEMG signals through a textile electrode embroidered within a smart sleeve bandage for telemetric assessment of muscle activities and fatigue. We have taken an “Internet of Things”-based approach to acquire the sEMG, using a Myoware sensor and transmit the signal wirelessly through a WiFi-enabled microcontroller unit (NodeMCU; ESP8266). Using a wireless router as an access point, the data transmitted from ESP8266 was received and routed to the webserver-cum-database (Xampp local server) installed on a mobile phone or PC for processing and visualization. The textile electrode integrated with IoT enabled us to measure sEMG, whose quality is similar to that of conventional methods. To verify the performance of our developed prototype, we compared the sEMG signal recorded from the biceps, triceps, and tibialis muscles, using both the smart textile electrode and the gelled electrode. The root mean square and average rectified values of the sEMG measured using our prototype for the three muscle types were within the range of 1.001 ± 0.091 mV to 1.025 ± 0.060 mV and 0.291 ± 0.00 mV to 0.65 ± 0.09 mV, respectively. Further, we also performed the principal component analysis for a total of 18 features (15 time domain and 3 frequency domain) for the same muscle position signals. On the basis on the hierarchical clustering analysis of the PCA’s score, as well as the one-way MANOVA of the 18 features, we conclude that the differences observed in the data for the different muscle types as well as the electrode types are statistically insignificant. This study aims to evaluate the lifespan of Ti-Ag dry electrodes prepared using flexible polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) substrates. Following previous studies, the electrodes were designed to be integrated into wearables for remote electromyography (EMG) monitoring and electrical stimulation (FES) therapy. Four types of Ti-Ag electrodes were prepared by DC magnetron sputtering, using a pure-Ti target doped with a growing number of Ag pellets. After extensive characterization of their chemical composition and (micro)structural evolution, the Ti-Ag electrodes were immersed in an artificial sweat solution (standard ISO-3160-2) at 37 °C with constant stirring. Results revealed that all the Ti-Ag electrodes maintained their integrity and functionality for 24 h. Although there was a notable increase in electrical resistivity beyond this timeframe, the acquisition and transmission of (bio)signals remained viable for electrodes with Ag/Ti ratios below 0.23. However, electrodes with higher Ag content (Ag/Ti = 0.31) became insulators after 7 days of immersion due to excessive Ag release into the sweat solution. This study concludes that higher Ag/Ti atomic ratios result in heightened corrosion processes on the electrode’s surface, consequently diminishing their lifespan despite the advantages of incorporating Ag into their composition. This research highlights the critical importance of evaluating electrode longevity, especially in remote biomedical applications like smart wearables, where electrode performance over time is crucial for reliable and sustained monitoring and stimulation. Artificial intelligence (AI) techniques for intelligent mobile computing in healthcare has opened up new opportunities in healthcare systems. Combining AI techniques with the existing Internet of Medical Things (IoMT) will enhance the quality of care that patients receive at home remotely and the successful establishment of smart living environments. Building a real AI for mobile AI in an integrated smart hospital environment is a challenging problem due to the complexities of receiving IoT medical sensors data, data analysis, and deep learning algorithm complexity programming for mobile AI engine implementation AI-based cloud computing complexities, especially when we tackle real-time environments of AI technologies. In this paper, we propose a new mobile AI smart hospital platform architecture for stroke prediction and emergencies. In addition, this research is focused on developing and testing different modules of integrated AI software based on XAI architecture, this is for the mobile health app as an independent expert system or as connected with a simulated environment of an AI-cloud-based solution. The novelty is in the integrated architecture and results obtained in our previous works and this extended research on hybrid GMDH and LSTM deep learning models for the proposed artificial intelligence and IoMT engine for mobile health edge computing technology. Its main goal is to predict heart–stroke disease. Current research is still missing a mobile AI system for heart/brain stroke prediction during patient emergency cases. This research work implements AI algorithms for stroke prediction and diagnosis. The hybrid AI in connected health is based on a stacked CNN and group handling method (GMDH) predictive analytics model, enhanced with an LSTM deep learning module for biomedical signals prediction. The techniques developed depend on the dataset of electromyography (EMG) signals, which provides a significant source of information for the identification of normal and abnormal motions in a stroke scenario. The resulting artificial intelligence mHealth app is an innovation beyond the state of the art and the proposed techniques achieve high accuracy as stacked CNN reaches almost 98% for stroke diagnosis. The GMDH neural network proves to be a good technique for monitoring the EMG signal of the same patient case with an average accuracy of 98.60% to an average of 96.68% of the signal prediction. Moreover, extending the GMDH model and a hybrid LSTM with dense layers deep learning model has improved significantly the prediction results that reach an average of 99%. Full article

An exoskeleton, a wearable device, was designed based on the user’s physical and cognitive interactions. The control of the exoskeleton uses biomedical signals reflecting the user intention as input, and its algorithm is calculated as an output to make the movement smooth. However, the process of transforming the input of biomedical signals, such as electromyography (EMG), into the output of adjusting the torque and angle of the exoskeleton is limited by a finite time lag and precision of trajectory prediction, which result in a mismatch between the subject and exoskeleton. Here, we propose an EMG-based single-joint exoskeleton system by merging a differentiable continuous system with a dynamic musculoskeletal model. The parameters of each muscle contraction were calculated and applied to the rigid exoskeleton system to predict the precise trajectory. The results revealed accurate torque and angle prediction for the knee exoskeleton and good performance of assistance during movement. Our method outperformed other models regarding the rate of convergence and execution time. In conclusion, a differentiable continuous system merged with a dynamic musculoskeletal model supported the effective and accurate performance of an exoskeleton controlled by EMG signals. This work investigates elimination methods for cardiogenic artifacts in respiratory surface electromyographic (sEMG) signals and compares their performance with respect to subsequent fatigue detection with different fatigue algorithms. The analysis is based on artificially constructed test signals featuring a clearly defined expected fatigue level. Test signals are additively constructed with different proportions from sEMG and electrocardiographic (ECG) signals. Cardiogenic artifacts are eliminated by high-pass filtering (HP), template subtraction (TS), a newly introduced two-step approach (TSWD) consisting of template subtraction and a wavelet-based damping step and a pure wavelet-based damping (DSO). Each method is additionally combined with the exclusion of QRS segments (gating). Fatigue is subsequently quantified with mean frequency (MNF), spectral moments ratio of order five (SMR5) and fuzzy approximate entropy (fApEn). Different combinations of artifact elimination methods and fatigue detection algorithms are tested with respect to their ability to deliver invariant results despite increasing ECG contamination. Both DSO and TSWD artifact elimination methods displayed promising results regarding the intermediate, “cleaned” EMG signal. However, only the TSWD method enabled superior results in the subsequent fatigue detection across different levels of artifact contamination and evaluation criteria. SMR5 could be determined as the best fatigue detection algorithm. This study proposes a signal processing chain to determine neuromuscular fatigue despite the presence of cardiogenic artifacts. The results furthermore underline the importance of selecting a combination of algorithms that play well together to remove cardiogenic artifacts and to detect fatigue. This investigation provides guidance for clinical studies to select optimal signal processing to detect fatigue from respiratory sEMG signals. Full article

To facilitate the broader use of EMG signal whitening, we studied four whitening procedures of various complexities, as well as the roles of sampling rate and noise correction. We separately analyzed force-varying and constant-force contractions from 64 subjects who completed constant-posture tasks about the elbow over a range of forces from 0% to 50% maximum voluntary contraction (MVC). From the constant-force tasks, we found that noise correction via the root difference of squares (RDS) method consistently reduced EMG recording noise, often by a factor of 5–10. All other primary results were from the force-varying contractions. Sampling at 4096 Hz provided small and statistically significant improvements over sampling at 2048 Hz (~3%), which, in turn, provided small improvements over sampling at 1024 Hz (~4%). In comparing equivalent processing variants at a sampling rate of 4096 Hz, whitening filters calibrated to the EMG spectrum of each subject generally performed best (4.74% MVC EMG-force error), followed by one universal whitening filter for all subjects (4.83% MVC error), followed by a high-pass filter whitening method (4.89% MVC error) and then a first difference whitening filter (4.91% MVC error)—but none of these statistically differed. Each did significantly improve from EMG-force error without whitening (5.55% MVC). The first difference is an excellent whitening option over this range of contraction forces since no calibration or algorithm decisions are required. Full article

Recently, with the rapid development of biomedical information, establishing secure communication and appropriate security services has become necessary to ensure a secure information exchange process. Therefore, to protect the privacy and confidentiality of personal data, in this study, we use a chaotic system, Lü system of the Lorenz-like system, to generate chaotic signals and apply them to encrypt the biomedical information. In addition, with one of the states of the chaotic system, we design a simple proportional-derivative (PD) controller to synchronize the master-slave chaotic systems for decrypting the biomedical information. Then, we encrypt the biomedical information, electrocardiography (ECG) and electromyography (EMG), measured about 30 s to 60 s to get tens of thousands of data from the subjects at the transmitting side (master) and send them to the receiving side (slave). After the receiving side receives the encrypted information, it decrypts them with the PD controller and then obtains the 1 mV to 2 mV biomedical signals. Thus, the security of the biomedical information can be ensured and realized. Full article
