Traditional 2D optical markers degrade quickly in underwater applications due to sediment accumulation and marine biofouling, becoming undetectable within weeks. This paper presents a Three-Dimensional Binary Marker, a novel passive fiducial marker designed for underwater Long-Term Deployment. The Three-Dimensional Binary Marker addresses the 2D-markers limitation through a 3D design that enhances resilience and maintains contrast for computer vision detection over extended periods. The proposed solution has been validated through simulation, water tank testing, and long-term sea trials for 5 months. In each stage, the marker was compared based on detection per visible frame and the detection distance. In conclusion, the design demonstrated superior performance compared to standard 2D markers. The proposed Three-Dimensional Binary Marker provides compatibility with widely used fiducial markers, such as ArUco and AprilTag, allowing quick adaptation for users. In terms of fabrication, the Three-Dimensional Binary Marker uses additive manufacturing, offering a low-cost and scalable solution for underwater localization tasks. The proposed marker improved the deployment time of fiducial markers from a couple of days to sixty days and with a range up to seven meters, providing robustness and reliability. As the marker survivability and detection range depend on its size, it is still a valuable innovation for Autonomous Underwater Vehicles, as well as for inspection, maintenance, and monitoring tasks in marine robotics and offshore infrastructure applications. Heart rate (HR) is strongly affected by the autonomic nervous system (ANS), while its spontaneous fluctuations, called heart rate variability (HRV), report about the dynamics of the complex, vegetative regulation of the heart rhythm. Hence, HRV is widely considered an important marker of the ANS effects on the cardiac system, and as such, a crucial diagnostic tool in cardiology. In order to obtain nontrivial results from HRV analysis, it would be desirable to establish exact, universal interrelations between the typical HRV parameters and HR itself. That, however, has not yet been fully accomplished. Hence, our aim was to perform a comparative statistical analysis of ECG recordings from a public database, with a focus on the HR dependence of typical HRV parameters. We revealed their fundamental connections, which were substantiated by basic mathematical considerations, and were experimentally demonstrated via the analysis of 24 h of ECG recordings of more than 200 healthy individuals. The large database allowed us to perform unique age-cohort analyses. We confirmed the HR dependence of typical time-domain parameters, such as RMSSD and SDNN, frequency-domain parameters such as the VLF, LF, and HF components, and nonlinear indices such as sample entropy and DFA exponents. In addition to shedding light on their relationship, we are the first, to our knowledge, to identify a new, diffuse structure in the VHF regime as an important indicator of SNS activity. In addition, the demonstrated age dependence of the HRV parameters gives important new insight into the long-term changes in the ANS regulation of the cardiac system. As a possible molecular physiological mechanism underlying our new findings, we suggest that they are associated with Piezo2 channel function and its age-related degradation. We expect our results to be utilized in HRV analysis related to both medical research and practice. Full article

Background/Objectives: Heart rate variability (HRV) is a marker of autonomic nervous system function, based on fluctuations in heartbeat intervals. Although several studies have investigated the association between frequency-domain HRV parameters and glaucoma, evidence based on large sample sizes remains limited. Therefore, the present study aimed to examine the relationship between frequency-domain HRV parameters and glaucoma subtypes, including primary open-angle glaucoma (PG) and exfoliation glaucoma (EG), using a larger sample size. Methods: Participants with primary open-angle glaucoma (PG), exfoliation glaucoma (EG), or no ocular disease other than cataract (controls) were recruited at Shimane University between June 2023 and July 2024. Frequency-domain HRV parameters (total power [TP], very-low-frequency [VLF], low-frequency [LF], high-frequency [HF], and LF/HF) were measured using a sphygmograph (TAS9 Pulse Analyzer Plus View). Group comparisons were conducted using unpaired t-tests, Fisher’s exact tests, and Tukey’s HSD test. Multivariate analyses were performed to identify factors associated with each HRV parameter. Results: A total of 809 participants were analyzed, including 522 with PG, 191 with EG, and 96 controls. The EG group showed significantly lower values across all frequency-domain HRV parameters compared to the PG group, and significantly lower LnLF values than the control group (p = 0.012). Multivariate analyses revealed that no significant associations were found between HRV measures and the presence of glaucoma or pseudoexfoliation material (PEM) deposition. Older age was significantly associated with lower values across all HRV parameters. Conclusions: In elderly glaucoma patients, age-related alterations in frequency-domain HRV parameters have been observed. Full article

An accurate extrinsic calibration between LiDAR and cameras is essential for effective sensor fusion, directly impacting the perception capabilities of autonomous driving systems. Although prior calibration approaches using planar and point features have yielded some success, they suffer from inherent limitations. Specifically, methods that rely on fitting planar contours using depth-discontinuous points are prone to systematic errors, which hinder the precise extraction of the 3D positions of feature points. This, in turn, compromises the accuracy and robustness of the calibration. To overcome these challenges, this paper introduces a novel 3D calibration plate incorporating the gradient depth, localization markers, and corner features. At the point cloud level, the gradient depth enables the accurate estimation of the 3D coordinates of feature points. At the image level, corner features and localization markers facilitate the rapid and precise acquisition of 2D pixel coordinates, with minimal interference from environmental noise. This method establishes a rigorous and systematic framework to enhance the accuracy of LiDAR–camera extrinsic calibrations. In a simulated environment, experimental results demonstrate that the proposed algorithm achieves a rotation error below 0.002 radians and a translation error below 0.005 m. Full article

This study investigates the effects of transcutaneous electroacupuncture stimulation (TEAS) on eyeblink rate, EEG, and heart rate variability (HRV), emphasising whether eyeblink data—often dismissed as artefacts—can serve as useful physiological markers. Sixty-six participants underwent four TEAS sessions with different stimulation frequencies (2.5, 10, 80, and 160 pps, with 160 pps as a low-amplitude sham). EEG, ECG, PPG, and respiration data were recorded before, during, and after stimulation. Using non-parametric statistical analyses, including Friedman’s test, Wilcoxon, Conover–Iman, and bootstrapping, the study found significant changes across eyeblink, EEG, and HRV measures. Eyeblink laterality, particularly at 2.5 and 10 pps, showed strong frequency-specific effects. EEG power asymmetry and spectral centroids were associated with HRV indices, and 2.5 pps stimulation produced the strongest parasympathetic HRV response. Blink rate correlated with increased sympathetic and decreased parasympathetic activity. Baseline HRV measures, such as lower heart rate, predicted participant dropout. Eyeblinks were analysed using BLINKER software (v. 1.1.0), and additional complexity and entropy (‘CEPS-BLINKER’) metrics were derived. These measures were more predictive of adverse reactions than EEG-derived indices. Overall, TEAS modulates multiple physiological markers in a frequency-specific manner. Eyeblink characteristics, especially laterality, may offer valuable insights into autonomic function and TEAS efficacy in neuromodulation research. Full article

Autonomic imbalance is one of the major pathological disturbances in chronic heart failure (CHF). Additionally, enhanced oxidative stress and inflammation are considered to be the main contributors to the disease progression. A growing body of evidence suggests cholinergic stimulation as a potential therapeutic approach in CHF, since it corrects the autonomic imbalance and alters the inflammatory response via the cholinergic anti-inflammatory pathway. Although previous research has provided some insights into the potential mechanisms behind these effects, there is a gap in knowledge regarding different cholinergic stimulation methods and their specific mechanisms of action. In the present study, an isoprenaline model (5 mg/kg/day s.c. for 7 days, followed by 4 weeks of CHF development) was used. Afterwards, rats received pyridostigmine (22 mg/kg/day in tap water for 14 days) or no treatment. Pyridostigmine treatment prevented the progression of CHF, decreasing chamber wall thinning (↑ PWDd, ↑ PWDs) and left ventricle dilatation (↓ LVIDd, ↓ LVIDs), thus improving cardiac contractile function (↑ EF). Additionally, pyridostigmine improved antioxidative status (↓ TBARS, ↓ NO2; ↑ CAT, ↑ GSH) and significantly reduced cardiac fibrosis development, confirmed by pathohistological findings and biochemical marker reduction (↓ MMP2, ↓ MMP9). However, further investigations are needed to fully understand the exact cellular mechanisms involved in the CHF attenuation via pyridostigmine. Full article

Associations Between Daily Heart Rate Variability and Self-Reported Wellness: A 14-Day Observational Study in Healthy Adults

Heart rate variability (HRV), particularly the root mean square of successive differences (RMSSD), is widely used as a non-invasive indicator of autonomic nervous system activity and physiological recovery. This study examined whether daily short-term HRV, measured under standardised morning conditions, was associated with self-reported wellness in a non-clinical adult population. Over a 14-day period, 41 participants completed daily five-minute HRV recordings using a Polar H10 chest sensor and the Kubios mobile app, followed by ratings of sleep quality, fatigue, stress, and physical recovery. Bayesian ordinal mixed-effects models revealed that higher RMSSD values were associated with better self-reported sleep (β = 0.510, 95% HDI: 0.239 to 0.779), lower fatigue (β = 0.281, 95% HDI: 0.020 to 0.562), and reduced stress (β = 0.353, 95% HDI: 0.059 to 0.606), even after adjusting for covariates. No association was found between RMSSD and perceived muscle soreness. These findings support the interpretability of RMSSD as a physiological marker of daily recovery and stress in real-world settings. While the effect sizes were modest and individual variability remained substantial, results suggest that consistent HRV monitoring may offer meaningful insight into subjective wellness—particularly when contextualised and tracked over time. Background: Reliable and non-invasive methods for assessing welfare in poultry are essential for improving evidence-based welfare monitoring and advancing management practices in commercial production systems. The iris-to-pupil (IP) ratio, previously validated by our group in primates and cattle, reflects autonomic nervous system balance and may serve as a physiological indicator of stress in laying hens. This study evaluated the utility of the IP ratio under field conditions across diverse commercial layer housing systems. Materials and Methods: In total, 296 laying hens (Lohmann Brown, n = 269; White Leghorn, n = 27) were studied across four locations in Canada housed under different systems: Guelph (indoor; pen), Spring Island (outdoor and scratch; organic), Ottawa (outdoor, indoor and scratch; free-range), and Toronto (outdoor and hobby; free-range). High-resolution photographs of the eye were taken under ambient lighting. Light intensity was measured using the light meter app. The IP ratio was calculated using NIH ImageJ software (Version 1.54p). Statistical analysis included one-way ANOVA and linear regression using GraphPad Prism (Version 5). Results: Birds housed outdoors had the highest IP ratios, followed by those in scratch systems, while indoor and pen-housed birds had the lowest IP ratios (p < 0.001). Subgroup analyses of birds in Ottawa and Spring Island farms confirmed significantly higher IP ratios in outdoor environments compared to indoor and scratch systems (p < 0.001). The IP ratio correlated weakly with ambient light intensity (r2 = 0.25) and age (r2 = 0.05), indicating minimal influence of these variables. Although White Leghorn hens showed lower IP ratios than Lohmann Browns, this difference was confounded by housing type; all White Leghorns were housed in pens. Thus, housing system but not breed was the primary driver of IP variation. Conclusions: The IP ratio is a robust, non-invasive physiological marker of welfare assessment in laying hens, sensitive to housing environment but minimally influenced by light or age. Its potential for integration with digital imaging technologies supports its use in scalable welfare assessment protocols. Full article

Background: Marburg virus disease (MVD) is a highly lethal filoviral infection, yet its long-term health consequences remain poorly understood. We present one of the most temporally distant evaluations of MVD survivors, conducted 13 years post-outbreak in Uganda, offering novel insights into chronic physiological, biochemical, haematological, and psychosocial outcomes. Methods: A cross-sectional, community-based study compared ten MVD survivors with nineteen age- and sex-matched unexposed controls. Clinical evaluations included vital signs, anthropometry, mental health screening, and symptom reporting. Laboratory analyses covered electrolytes, inflammatory markers, renal and liver function tests, haematology, and urinalysis. Standardised psychological assessments measured anxiety, depression, perceived stigma, and social support. Findings: Survivors exhibited an elevated body mass index (BMI), higher systolic and diastolic blood pressure, and lower respiratory rates compared to controls, indicating ongoing cardiometabolic and autonomic changes. These trends may reflect persistent cardiometabolic stress and potential alterations in autonomic regulation, warranting further investigation. Biochemically, survivors exhibited disruptions in serum chloride, bilirubin, and total protein levels, suggesting subclinical hepatic and renal stress. Haematological analysis revealed persistent reticulocytosis despite normal haemoglobin levels, indicating long-term erythropoietic modulation. Despite these physiological changes, survivors reported minimal psychological morbidity, sharply contrasting with the post-recovery profiles of other viral haemorrhagic fevers. Stigma was prevalent during the outbreak; however, strong family support alleviated long-term psychosocial distress. Interpretation: Thirteen years post-infection, MVD survivors demonstrate multisystem physiological perturbations without marked psychological sequelae. These findings challenge assumptions of universal post-viral trauma and highlight the necessity for tailored survivor care models. Future longitudinal studies should investigate the mechanistic pathways underlying cardiometabolic and haematological reprogramming to inform intervention strategies in resource-limited settings. Stroke is a major cause of long-term disability and mortality worldwide, often resulting in impairments not only in motor and cognitive functions but also in autonomic nervous system (ANS) regulation. Among the physiological markers that reflect ANS activity, heart rate variability (HRV) has emerged as a promising biomarker for assessing stroke severity and predicting recovery outcomes. HRV quantifies the temporal fluctuations between heartbeats and is traditionally analyzed through time- and frequency-domain measures. More recent approaches have introduced non-linear metrics such as approximate entropy, sample entropy, and detrended fluctuation analysis to capture complex heart rate dynamics. In this narrative review, we address the role of both linear and non-linear HRV parameters in the context of stroke, highlighting their relevance for understanding autonomic dysfunction and guiding rehabilitation. Evidence shows that reduced HRV is associated with poorer functional outcomes, higher mortality, and increased risk of complications post-stroke. Moreover, HRV trends can provide valuable insights into treatment effectiveness and individual recovery trajectories. We also discuss practical considerations for HRV measurement, including device selection, preprocessing strategies, and the need for methodological standardization. Finally, we outline interventional strategies that may enhance HRV and promote better recovery. Together, these findings support the integration of HRV analysis into stroke care as a non-invasive, accessible tool to guide prognosis and tailor interventions. Full article

This study presents a cooperative unmanned aerial system (UAS) designed to enable precise autonomous landings in unstructured environments using low-cost onboard vision technology. This approach involves a carrier UAV with a stabilized RGB camera and a neural inference system, as well as a lightweight tailsitter payload UAV with an embedded grayscale vision module. The system relies on visually recognizable landing markers and does not require additional sensors. Field trials comprising full deployments achieved an 80% success rate in autonomous landings, with vertical touchdown occurring within a 1.5 m radius of the target. These results confirm that vision-based marker detection using compact neural models can effectively support autonomous UAV operations in constrained conditions. This architecture offers a scalable alternative to the high complexity of SLAM or terrain-mapping systems. Full article

Propranolol, a nonselective beta-adrenergic antagonist, has shown potential for improving anxiety in autistic individuals. Heart rate variability (HRV), a noninvasive cardiac marker of autonomic nervous system functioning, may help identify individuals most likely to benefit from propranolol. Objectives: Determine if baseline resting HRV and other cardiac measures predict the response to propranolol for anxiety and core autism symptomology in autistic children and young adults. Methods: Sixty-two autistic individuals (ages 7–24) participated in a two-phase (i.e., a 12-week randomized controlled trial and a 12-week open-label extension) trial of propranolol. Baseline (i.e., resting state, prior to treatment) HRV and other cardiac measures were obtained from an electrocardiogram. Clinical global impression for anxiety symptoms and overall behavioral treatment impact were assessed after the 12-week trial period. Group-level (i.e., all participants) and responder groups (i.e., strong, minimal, and non-responders to propranolol) were analyzed for treatment effects. Results: HRV variables predicted group-level anxiety response to propranolol, particularly for strong responders. Also, lower baseline values of parasympathetic HRV indices were significantly correlated with greater behavioral improvement after treatment with propranolol. Last, several baseline cardiac variables were associated with improvement in multiple behavioral domains after treatment with propranolol. Conclusions: HRV may be a potential biomarker for predicting reduced anxiety and behavioral symptoms in response to propranolol in autistic children and young adults. Identifying autonomic profiles associated with positive treatment outcomes could guide future personalized interventions in autism. The results presented herein should be regarded as preliminary until the findings are replicated in future clinical trials. Full article

Prevalence of Autonomic Dysfunction and Correlation with Markers of Disease Severity in Cardiac Amyloidosis

Background: Transthyretin amyloidosis is a multi-system disease that may manifest as cardiomyopathy (ATTR-CM) and/or polyneuropathy. Both disease manifestations are associated with autonomic dysfunction. However, the prevalence of autonomic dysfunction in ATTR-CM remains to be evaluated. Methods: Within the scope of a prospective ATTR-CM registry, the Composite Autonomic Symptom Score-31 (COMPASS-31) questionnaire was applied to consecutive patients between November 2022 and November 2024. Baseline characteristics are described, and associations of the COMPASS-31 score with markers of disease severity were assessed. Kaplan–Meier analysis was utilized to assess the COMPASS-31 score’s association with a combined endpoint of all-cause mortality and heart failure-related hospitalizations. Results: A total of 129 ATTR-CM patients [81.7 years (IQR: 77.4–84.3), 108 male (83.7%)] were included in the final study cohort. After stratification using the COMPASS-31 median [14 points, interquartile range (IQR): 6–29], statistically significant differences with regard to New York Heart Association (NYHA) stage and the Kansas City Cardiomyopathy Questionnaire (KCCQ) were observed. Furthermore, the COMPASS-31 score was moderately correlated with the KCCQ score in Spearman correlation analysis (r = −0.55, p < 0.001). The primary endpoint occurred in 16 patients (13 HF-hospitalizations/3 deaths) after 6.3 (IQR: 2.8–17.1) months. In Kaplan–Meier analysis, a COMPASS-31 score above the median of 14 was also associated with the primary endpoint of all-cause mortality and HF-related hospitalization (log-rank p = 0.047). Conclusions: Autonomic dysfunction is highly prevalent in ATTR-CM, affecting almost two-thirds of patients. As the presence of autonomic dysfunction is likely associated with more severely impaired quality of life, routine screening for this disease manifestation of transthyretin amyloidosis may be advisable. Core Symptoms of Eating Disorders and Heart Rate Variability: A Systematic Review

(1) Eating disorders (EDs), characterized by symptoms such as restrictive eating, binge eating, compensatory behaviors, and emotional dysregulation, are associated with autonomic nervous system dysregulation, which may contribute to cardiovascular complications. This review systematically examines the relationship between heart rate variability (HRV) and core ED symptoms to identify specific autonomic patterns linked to behaviors like fasting, binge eating, and emotional dysregulation. (2) A total of 16 cross-sectional and longitudinal studies were narratively synthesized following PRISMA guidelines. All studies were selected from the Science Direct, PubMed, Web of Science, and Scopus databases. (3) Findings indicate that individuals with anorexia nervosa exhibit blunted sympathetic reactivity and reduced parasympathetic flexibility, particularly during stress or physical activity, with HRV measures normalizing after weight restoration. In contrast, binge eating and loss-of-control eating are associated with lower resting HRV, which correlates with the severity of eating behaviors. Reactive HRV also varies with food cues and emotional states, showing complex autonomic responses in individuals with EDs. Emotional dysregulation, consistently marked by reduced high-frequency HRV, is a key feature across these disorders. (4) These results suggest that HRV patterns may serve as physiological markers of ED symptomatology, offering insights for targeted interventions aimed at improving both emotional regulation and cardiovascular health in affected individuals. Background: Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) are prevalent conditions with overlapping clinical features and shared consequences on autonomic function. Heart rate variability (HRV), a non-invasive biomarker of autonomic nervous system activity, may offer diagnostic, prognostic, and therapeutic insights in this patient population. Methods: A comprehensive literature review was conducted using PubMed, Google Scholar, and MEDLINE to identify peer-reviewed English-language studies published between January 2015 and December 2024. Studies were included if they evaluated HRV parameters in individuals with OSA, COPD, or overlap syndrome, explored HRV as a marker of disease severity or progression. A total of 239 studies were identified; after screening, 41 met the inclusion criteria. Results: The analysis revealed consistent evidence linking reduced HRV with both OSA and COPD severity. HRV alterations were more pronounced in overlap syndrome, reflecting synergistic autonomic dysfunction. HRV showed potential in differentiating disease stages, predicting cardiovascular risk, and evaluating treatment efficacy, particularly for CPAP therapy in OSA. Short-term HRV was particularly sensitive to autonomic changes, while long-term recordings helped track disease progression. Emerging evidence supports the use of HRV derived from wearable technologies as a viable screening tool for health and wellness. Conclusion: HRV is a valuable, non-invasive tool for assessing autonomic dysfunction in OSA, COPD, and their overlap. It offers significant potential for early diagnosis, disease monitoring, and treatment evaluation. Integrating HRV into clinical practice, could enhance diagnostic efficiency, reduce healthcare burden, and improve outcomes in high-risk respiratory populations. Furthermore, longitudinal studies are warranted to standardise HRV thresholds and validate their use in routine screening protocols. Full article
