Synthetic nanopores were recently demonstrated with memristive and nonlinear voltage-current behaviors, akin to ion channels in a cell membrane. Such ionic devices are considered a promising candidate for the development of brain-inspired neuromorphic computing techniques. In this work, we show the composite behavior of nanopore-array large memristors, formed with different membrane materials, pore sizes, electrolytes, and device arrangements. Anodic aluminum oxide (AAO) membranes with 5 nm and 20 nm diameter pores and track-etched polycarbonate (PCTE) membranes with 10 nm diameter pores are tested and shown to demonstrate memristive and nonlinear behaviors with approximately 107–1010 pores in parallel when electrolyte concentration across the membranes is asymmetric. Ion diffusion through the large number of channels induces time-dependent electrolyte asymmetry that drives the system through different memristive states. The behaviors of series composite memristors with different configurations are also presented. In addition to helping understand fluidic devices and circuits for neuromorphic computing, the results also shed light on the development of field-assisted ion-selection-membrane filtration techniques as well as the investigations of large neurons and giant synapses. Further work is needed to de-embed parasitic components of the measurement setup to obtain intrinsic large memristor properties. Full article

Optical sensor technologies are reshaping obesity detection by enabling non-invasive, dynamic analysis of biomechanical and morphological biomarkers. This review synthesizes recent advances in three key areas: optical gait analysis, vision-based pose estimation, and depth-sensing voxel modeling. Gait analysis leverages optical sensor arrays and video systems to identify obesity-specific deviations, such as reduced stride length and asymmetric movement patterns. Pose estimation algorithms—including markerless frameworks like OpenPose and MediaPipe—track kinematic patterns indicative of postural imbalance and altered locomotor control. Human voxel modeling reconstructs 3D body composition metrics, such as waist–hip ratio, through infrared-depth sensing, offering precise, contactless anthropometry. Despite their potential, challenges persist in sensor robustness under uncontrolled environments, algorithmic biases in diverse populations, and scalability for widespread deployment in existing health workflows. Emerging solutions such as federated learning and edge computing aim to address these limitations by enabling multimodal data harmonization and portable, real-time analytics. Future priorities involve standardizing validation protocols to ensure reproducibility, optimizing cost-efficacy for scalable deployment, and integrating optical systems with wearable technologies for holistic health monitoring. By shifting obesity diagnostics from static metrics to dynamic, multidimensional profiling, optical sensing paves the way for scalable public health interventions and personalized care strategies. In this paper, a robust tracking control problem for underactuated underwater vehicles in horizontal motion is investigated. The presented control scheme that performs the trajectory tracking task is a combination of the backstepping technique and the integral sliding mode control method using the inertial quasi velocities (IQVs) resulting from the inertia matrix decomposition. Unlike many known solutions, the proposed approach allows not only trajectory tracking, but also, due to the fact that IQV includes dynamic and geometric model parameters, allows us to obtain additional information about changes in vehicle behavior during movement. In this way, some insight into its dynamics is obtained. Moreover, the control strategy takes into account model inaccuracies and external disturbances, which makes it more useful from a technical point of view. Another advantage of this work is to indicate problems occurring during the implementation of trajectory tracking in algorithms with a dynamics model containing a diagonal inertia matrix, i.e., without inertial couplings. The theoretical results are illustrated by simulation tests conducted on two models of underwater vehicles with three degrees of freedom (DOF). Full article

Heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems and microgrids have garnered significant attention in recent research, with temperature control and renewable energy integration emerging as key focus areas in urban distribution power systems. This paper proposes a robust predictive temperature control (RPTC) method and a microgrid control strategy incorporating asymmetrical challenges, including uneven power load distribution and uncertainties in renewable outputs. The proposed method leverages a thermodynamics-based R-C model to achieve precise indoor temperature regulation under external disturbances, while a multisource disturbance compensation mechanism enhances system robustness. Additionally, an HVAC load control model is developed to enable real-time dynamic regulation of airflow, facilitating second-level load response and improved renewable energy accommodation. A symmetrical power tracking and voltage support secondary controller is also designed to accurately capture and manage the fluctuating power demands of HVAC systems for supporting operations of distribution power systems. The effectiveness of the proposed method is validated through power electronics simulations in the Matlab/Simulink/SimPowerSystems environment, demonstrating its practical applicability and superior performance. To improve the transient performance of speed tracking control while ensuring stability and considering actuator constraints in heavy-haul train systems, this paper proposes a novel cruise control method based on a nonparallel distributed compensation (non-PDC) fuzzy-based composite nonlinear feedback (CNF) technique. First, a low-dimensional nonlinear multi-particle error dynamics model is established based on the fencing concept, simplifying the model significantly. To facilitate controller design, a Takagi–Sugeno (T-S) fuzzy model is derived from the nonlinear model. Subsequently, sufficient conditions for the non-PDC fuzzy-based CNF controller are provided in terms of linear matrix inequalities (LMIs), with the controller design addressing asymmetric constraints on control inputs due to differing maximums of traction and braking forces. Simulations based on MATLAB/Simulink are conducted under different maneuvers to validate the effectiveness and superiority of the proposed method. The simulation results demonstrate a notable enhancement in transient performance (over 22.3% improvement in settling time) and steady-state cruise control performance for heavy-haul trains using the proposed strategy. To enhance positioning capability and reliability within existing Communication Navigation Fusion Systems (CNFSs), this paper proposes an Asymmetric Double-Sideband Composite Localization Signal (ADCLS) and a dual-carrier aggregation dual-code loop tracking mechanism with fuzzy control. By organically integrating an embedded signal into the original positioning signal, the code loop is optimized via fuzzy control, while the ADCLS signal is processed as an asymmetric double-sideband signal for joint signal extraction. Experimental validation employs the 5G New Radio (NR) Time-Delay Line (TDL) channel model to simulate multipath propagation effects. The results show that this method improves the tracking accuracy of the code loop and the main carrier loop, thereby enhancing the ranging accuracy. Full article

As China’s largest peninsula, the Shandong Peninsula faces recurrent threats from both tropical and extratropical cyclone-induced storm surges. Understanding the distinct mechanisms governing these surge types is critical for developing targeted coastal hazard mitigation strategies. This investigation employs the FVCOM-SWAVE coupled wave–current model to conduct numerical simulations and comparative analyses of two 2022 surge events, Typhoon Muifa (tropical) and the “221003” extratropical surge. The results demonstrate that hydrodynamic responses exhibit strong dependence on surge-generating meteorological regimes. Tropical surge dynamics correlate closely with typhoon track geometry, intensity gradients, and asymmetric wind field structures, manifesting rightward-biased energy intensification relative to storm motion. Conversely, extratropical surge variations align with evolving wind-pressure configurations during cold air advection, driven by synoptic-scale atmospheric reorganization. The hydrodynamic environmental response in the sea areas surrounding Jiaodong and Laizhou Bay is particularly pronounced, influenced by the intensity of wind stress on the sea surface, as well as the bathymetry and coastal geometry. We present and demonstrate a highly birefringent fiber Bragg grating (Hi-Bi FBG) that was fabricated using a femtosecond laser to induce a sawtooth stress region near the FBG. The FBG is fabricated with a femtosecond laser point-by-point method, while the sawtooth stress region is generated in fiber cladding using the femtosecond laser along a sawtooth path. This sawtooth stressor can introduce an anisotropic and asymmetric refractive index profile in the cross-section of the fiber, resulting in additional birefringence up to 2.97 × 10−4 along the axial direction of the FBG. The central wavelengths of the Hi-Bi FBG at the fast and slow axes exhibit different sensitivities to temperature and strain, allowing simultaneous measurement of the strain and temperature by tracking the resonant wavelength shifts in the two axes. The experimental results show that the temperature sensitivities of the fast and slow axes are 10.32 pm/°C and 10.42 pm/°C, while the strain sensitivities are 0.91 pm/µε and 0.99 pm/µε. The accuracy of this proposed sensor in measuring strain and temperature is estimated to be 2.2 µε and 0.2 °C. This approach addresses the issue of cross-sensitivity between temperature and strain and offers some advantages of low cost, compact size, and significant potential for advancements in practical multi-parameter sensing applications. As urban rail transit networks age, understanding the synergistic impacts of multi-defect interactions on tunnel structural safety has become critical for underground infrastructure maintenance. This study investigates defect interaction mechanisms in shield tunnels and cross passages of Beijing Metro Line 8, integrating field monitoring, numerical simulations, and Bayesian network analysis. Long-term field surveys identified spatiotemporal coupling characteristics of four key defects—lining leakage, structural voids, material deterioration, and deformation—while revealing typical defect propagation patterns such as localized leakage at track beds and drainage pipe-induced voids. A 3D fluid–solid coupling numerical model simulated multi-defect interactions, demonstrating that defect clusters in structurally vulnerable zones (e.g., pump rooms) significantly altered pore pressure distribution and intensified displacement, whereas void expansion exacerbated lining uplift and asymmetric ground settlement. Stress concentrations were notably amplified at tunnel–cross passage interfaces. The Bayesian network risk model further validated the dominant roles of defect volume and burial depth in controlling structural safety. Results highlight an inverse correlation between defect severity and structural integrity. Based on these findings, a coordinated maintenance framework combining priority monitoring of high-stress interfaces with targeted grouting treatments is proposed, offering a systematic approach to multi-defect risk management that bridges theoretical models with practical engineering solutions. The UAV bicopter is a double-propeller system whose main objective is to stabilize a rod at a given angle by precisely controlling the rotation speed of each propeller. This mechanism generates asymmetric thrust forces that induce a torque on the bar, thus allowing its pitch angle to be modified. Since its dynamics involve complex interactions between the thrust generated by the rotors, aerodynamic effects, and the pendulum behavior of the system, the bicopter is classified as a highly nonlinear system sensitive to external disturbances. To address this complexity, the implementation of a fuzzy Takagi–Sugeno–Kang (TSK) controller is proposed. This controller decomposes the nonlinear dynamics into multiple local linear models associated with a specific operating condition, such as different pitch angles and rotor speeds. The control strategy provides accurate trajectory tracking and effectively handles disturbances and varying conditions, making this approach a practical solution for both dynamic and uncertain environments. This strategy ensures precise trajectory tracking and demonstrates robust performance compared to other control methods, such as PID and LQR, which often struggle with disturbances and system nonlinearities. The TSK controller has proven its effectiveness in experimental trajectory tracking tests, achieving root mean square errors (RMSEs) of 0.2049, 0.3269, 0.3899, 0.3335, and 0.2494, which evaluate the average error in degrees of the system concerning the target position, for tracking trajectories of −10 to 10, −12 to 12, −15 to 15, −17 to 17, and −20 to 20 degrees, respectively. Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is one of the most common progressive neurodegenerative diseases leading to impairments in memory, orientation, and behavior. However, significant work is still needed to fully understand the progression of such disease and develop novel therapeutic agents for AD prevention and treatment. Small extracellular vesicles (sEVs) have received attention in recent years due to their potential therapeutic effects on AD. The aim of this study was to determine the potential effect of sEVs in an in vitro model of AD. sEVs were isolated from human Wharton’s jelly mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) by asymmetric depth filtration, a method developed recently by us. AD was modeled in vitro using cells obtained from the hippocampi of newborn 5xFAD transgenic mice carrying mutations involved in familial AD. After isolation, sEVs underwent detailed characterization that included scanning electron microscopy, nanoparticle tracking analysis, confocal microscopy, Western blotting, and Luminex assay. When added to 5xFAD hippocampal cells, sEVs were nontoxic, colocalized with neurons and astrocytes, decreased the level of Aβ peptide, and increased the synaptic density. These results support the possibility that sEVs can improve brain cell function during aging, decrease the risk of AD, and potentially be used for AD therapeutics. Full article

In recent years, balloon-borne threats carrying hazardous or explosive materials have emerged as a novel form of asymmetric terrorism, posing serious challenges to public safety. In response to this evolving threat, this study presents an AI-driven autonomous drone defense system capable of real-time detection, tracking, and neutralization of airborne hazards. The proposed framework integrates state-of-the-art deep learning models, including YOLO (You Only Look Once) for fast and accurate object detection, and convolutional neural networks (CNNs) for X-ray image analysis, enabling precise identification of hazardous payloads. This multi-stage system ensures safe interception and retrieval while minimizing the risk of secondary damage from debris dispersion. Moreover, a robust data collection and storage architecture supports continuous model improvement, ensuring scalability and adaptability for future counter-terrorism operations. As balloon-based threats represent a new and unconventional security risk, this research offers a practical and deployable solution. Beyond immediate applicability, the system also provides a foundational platform for the development of next-generation autonomous security infrastructures in both civilian and defense contexts. Our research analyzes the design of an auction model for railway transportation on the South-East Railway of Peru, managed by Ferrocarril Transandino S.A. (Fetransa) and operated by PeruRail. Initially, the regulatory framework aimed to promote competition in railway transportation through timetable auctions and infrastructure access. However, the concession has resulted in a vertically integrated structure that favors PeruRail, which faces minimal direct competition, controls high-demand time slots, and hinders the entry of other operators due to strategic and structural access barriers. To address these distortions, we propose reforming the auction mechanism to neutralize these advantages and enhance competition. In this revised framework, the track usage fee will serve as the competitive factor, with the highest bid above a minimum base rate securing the allocation. Additionally, we propose the implementation of asymmetric tariffs to compensate for the higher costs faced by operators with fewer economies of scale, technological optimizations to facilitate equitable access to time slots, and stricter oversight mechanisms to ensure transparency in timetable allocation. These measures aim to balance the market and safeguard competition through a more equitable and efficient auction design. Full article

This study focuses on the distributed fixed-time fault-tolerant control problem for a network of six-degree-of-freedom (DOF) fixed-wing unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), which are subject to full-state constraints and actuator faults. The novelty of the proposed design lies in the incorporation of an enhanced asymmetric time-varying tan-type barrier Lyapunov function (BLF), which is applicable in both constrained and unconstrained scenarios. This function ensures that the UAV states remain within compact sets at all times while achieving fixed-time convergence. Additionally, a fixed-time performance function (FTPF) is developed to eliminate the dependency on exponential functions commonly used in traditional fixed-time control methods. The adverse effects of actuator faults, including lock-in-place and loss of effectiveness, are mitigated through a bounded uniform tracking control design. A rigorous Lyapunov function analysis demonstrates that all closed-loop signals are semi-globally uniformly ultimately bounded (SGUUB), with both velocity and attitude tracking errors converging to residual sets near the origin. The Asian longhorn beetle (ALB), Anoplophora glabripennis, and citrus longhorn beetle (CLB), Anoplophora chinensis, are two destructive invasive wood-boring pests, with high similarities in morphology, geographical distribution, host range, life cycle, adult behaviors and male-produced pheromone, implying a potential existence of interspecific interactions. Matings have been found to occur across females and males of the two species when manually paired in confined spaces. However, interspecific mating and its regulating factors are unclear between sympatric populations on hosts. Herein, by observing mountings and tracking the beetles that freely coexisted on host branches in cages, we found that the majority of mountings appeared within species; however, interspecific mountings occasionally occurred between male CLBs and female ALBs. The CLB was more active than the ALB at night. It seems that males actively searched for female ALBs, while the inverse was the case with CLBs. The main release periods of shared pheromone components overlapped between the two species, while compound ratios had significant differences. Our results unveil a trivial and asymmetrical interspecific mating between ALBs and CLBs, implying a risk of co-outbreaks of the two species in either native or invaded areas. Full article
