Mindfulness-Based Art Interventions for Students: A Meta-Analysis Review of the Effect on Anxiety

Anxiety has become an important issue affecting students’ mental health. There is some evidence that mindfulness-based art interventions (MBAIs) can reduce students’ anxiety symptoms. However, some studies have shown the opposite view. Therefore, it is necessary to explore whether MBAIs are effective in alleviating students’ anxiety. In this meta-analysis, we chose 17 articles that met the criteria for inclusion, involving a total of 1548 participants, to figure out how big an impact the interventions had on student anxiety as a whole. The results show that MBAIs can reduce students’ anxiety (g = −0.387, p = 0.000). The effect size varies based on different moderators, including learning stage, sample size, intervention type, research design, measuring instrument, and intervention duration. Intervention type, research design, and measuring instrument are significant moderators. Specifically, the mindfulness-based art intervention (MBAI) showed stronger effects than the mandala coloring activity. Single-group experimental designs showed significantly higher effect sizes than studies that included a control group, and studies that used other measurement instruments had significantly higher effect sizes than those that used the State–Trait Anxiety Inventory. On this basis, the researchers put forward specific suggestions based on MBAIs to alleviate the anxiety of students from different educational backgrounds. However, due to the nascent nature of this field, the number of included articles is relatively small. The effectiveness of the research needs further testing. Full article

In 1913, the Fabergé workshops in St Petersburg produced the most expensive of their famed Imperial egg commissions, the so-called “Winter Egg,” designed by Alma Pihl. Fashioned from translucent rock crystal and decked in a glittering array of gemstones, the egg followed several other designs on winter themes by the highly respected jeweller. In this article, Fabergé’s winter-themed creations are the starting point for an exploration of how ice, frost, and snow were portrayed by Russian artists of the late imperial period. Such works both reflected and realised many of the shifts in the art world from the mid-nineteenth century onwards, for example, the renewed focus on making art “national,” the rise of artistic opportunities for women, the erasure of boundaries between fine and applied art, the influx of such European movements as Impressionism and Symbolism, and the development of modernist approaches to content and style. The principal focus is on works by artists associated with the Abramtsevo artistic circle (Abramtsevskii khudozhestvennyi kruzhok). How did representations of ice, snow, and frost participate in the emerging dynamic between the national idea and the decorative, which in turn fed into the move towards abstraction? Why did these subjects appear frequently in art by women? Why was winter often presented through the lens of the imagined and the ludic? These works evidence a new subjectivity that arose from Abramtsevo artists’ greater freedom to render lived experience. The paths open to them when working outside the Academic system, permitted creativity to range freely in the forging of a national modern style. Full article

Development and Validation of a Self-Assessment Tool for Convergence Competencies in Humanities, Arts, and Social Sciences for Sustainable Futures in the South Korean Context

Addressing global challenges such as climate change and inequality requires convergence competencies that enable learners to devise sustainable solutions. Such competencies have been emphasized in Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics (STEM) fields, but empirical research and assessment tools tailored to Humanities, Arts, and Social Sciences (HASS) remain scarce. This study aimed to develop and validate a self-assessment tool to measure convergence competencies among HASS learners. A three-round Delphi survey with domain experts was conducted to evaluate and refine an initial pool of items. Items with insufficient content validity were revised or deleted, and all retained items achieved a Content Validity Ratio (CVR) of ≥0.800, with most scoring 1.000. The validated instrument was administered to 455 undergraduates participating in a convergence education program. Exploratory factor analysis identified five key dimensions: Convergent Commitment, Future Problem Awareness, Future Efficacy, Convergent Learning, and Multidisciplinary Inclusiveness, explaining 69.72% of the variance. Confirmatory factor analysis supported the model’s goodness-of-fit (χ2 (160) = 378.786, RMSEA = 0.054, CFI = 0.952), and the instrument demonstrated high internal consistency (Cronbach’s α = 0.919). The results confirm that the tool is both reliable and valid for diagnosing convergence competencies in HASS contexts, providing a practical framework for interdisciplinary learning and reflective engagement toward sustainable futures. Background: Previous research has linked hypertensive disorders of pregnancy (HDP) and long-term cardiovascular disease (CVD) with assisted reproductive technology (ART). It is not clear whether this reflects the background population cardiovascular profiles or whether ART independently increases the long-term risk for CVD and alters cardiovascular function. Furthermore, CVD has been associated with pathological cardiovascular function before and after the establishment of the disease. The aim of this study was to compare cardiac function in women attending for ART between those who had previous treatment and those who had not after controlling for demographic characteristics which have been shown to affect cardiovascular function. Methods: This was a prospective observational cohort study at a London fertility clinic. Women were consecutively enrolled between May 2021 and March 2022. Maternal demographics and cardiac function using transthoracic echocardiography were assessed before the current treatment cycle in the mid-luteal phase of the menstrual cycle. Maternal demographics included age, body mass index, smoking, race, and parity. Cardiovascular parameters included blood pressure and indices of left-ventricular systolic and diastolic function. Differences between cardiac variables after controlling for maternal demographics and history of previous ART were assessed by multivariate linear regression. Results: There were 232 healthy women who agreed to participate in the study; of those, 153 (58%) had undergone previous ART. After controlling for maternal demographic characteristics, previous assisted reproductive technology was not an independent predictor of cardiac function. Conclusions: Previous ART is not associated with significant changes in cardiac function. Full article

This study explores the potential of craft-based activities in the context of special education, focusing on a papier mâché sculpting workshop implemented at the Special Kindergarten of Komotini, Greece, as part of the Horizon Europe Craeft project. The initiative aimed to assess how such creative activities could enhance the learning experience of children with intellectual and motor impairments, foster socialization, and develop fine motor skills. With reference to literature in art therapy, craft education, and inclusive pedagogy, the study applied a mixed-methods approach combining observation, visual analysis, and a survey. The findings indicate that, despite varied levels of participation based on individual needs, all students engaged meaningfully with the materials and activities. School professionals observed increased student engagement, emotional comfort, and communication, while also identifying the activity as well adapted and replicable in similar contexts. The results highlight the value of crafts in special education, not only as a sensory and cognitive stimulus but also as a means of fostering inclusion and self-expression. The study concludes with a call for further research into the role of tactile materials and hand gestures in relation to specific impairments. Full article

As large language models (LLMs) and vision–language models (VLMs) become increasingly used in robotics area, a crucial question arises: to what extent do these models replicate human-like cognitive processes, particularly within socially interactive contexts? Whilst these models demonstrate impressive multimodal reasoning and perception capabilities, their cognitive plausibility remains underexplored. In this study, we address this gap by using human visual attention as a behavioural proxy for cognition in a naturalistic human-robot interaction (HRI) scenario. Eye-tracking data were previously collected from participants engaging in social human-human interactions, providing frame-level gaze fixations as a human attentional ground truth. We then prompted a state-of-the-art VLM (LLaVA) to generate scene descriptions, which were processed by four LLMs (DeepSeek-R1-Distill-Qwen-7B, Qwen1.5-7B-Chat, LLaMA-3.1-8b-instruct, and Gemma-7b-it) to infer saliency points. Critically, we evaluated each model in both stateless and memory-augmented (short-term memory, STM) modes to assess the influence of temporal context on saliency prediction. Our results presented that whilst stateless LLaVA most closely replicates human gaze patterns, STM confers measurable benefits only for DeepSeek, whose lexical anchoring mirrors human rehearsal mechanisms. Other models exhibited degraded performance with memory due to prompt interference or limited contextual integration. This work introduces a novel, empirically grounded framework for assessing cognitive plausibility in generative models and underscores the role of short-term memory in shaping human-like visual attention in robotic systems. Background and Objectives: Long-acting cabotegravir and rilpivirine (LA-CAB/RPV) offers an alternative to daily oral antiretroviral therapy (ART) for people living with HIV (PLWH). Although LA-CAB/RPV has been approved in Turkey, the country remains in the pre-rollout period, and national data on patient perspectives are lacking. This is the first nationwide study from Turkey, a setting of increasing HIV incidence, assessing PLWH perspectives on switching to LA-CAB/RPV and the influence of motivational factors on treatment preferences. Materials and Methods: A prospective, multicenter, cross-sectional study was conducted across 11 HIV treatment centers representing all regions of Turkey. Virologically suppressed PLWH meeting current eligibility criteria for LA-CAB/RPV were included. Treatment preferences (switch to LA-CAB/RPV or remain on oral ART) and five anticipated motivational domains, namely perceived efficacy, safety, convenience, privacy, and cost, were systematically assessed through structured, face-to-face interviews. Results: Among 200 eligible participants, 86% (n = 172) preferred switching to LA-CAB/RPV. In all subgroups, LA-CAB/RPV was preferred over oral ART, except for those with no formal literacy. Prior awareness of LA-CAB/RPV was significantly associated with the switching preference (p < 0.001), with healthcare providers being the most common source of information, at 45.5% (n = 172) (p < 0.001). Residential proximity to the healthcare center (p = 0.018) and all motivational factors significantly influenced the preference (p < 0.05). Notably, when participants who initially chose to remain on oral ART were asked whether they would reconsider switching if injections were administered every six months, overall preference for long-acting therapy increased from 86% to 98%. Conclusions: High clinical eligibility and strong acceptability for LA-CAB/RPV were observed among Turkish PLWH. Our findings demonstrate that structured motivational factors significantly influence the treatment preference. Addressing these patient-centered factors and logistical barriers may support the successful integration of long-acting therapies into routine HIV care. Future longer-interval agents may improve patient-centered acceptability. Full article

Through the partnership, art therapy services were offered to medical agencies across the state of Kansas. Participants included medical patients, families, caregivers, staff, and professionals. Enhanced Cross-Audiovisual Perception in High-Level Martial Arts Routine Athletes Stems from Increased Automatic Processing Capacity

Multisensory integration is crucial for effective cognitive functioning, especially in complex tasks such as those requiring rapid audiovisual information processing. High-level martial arts routine athletes, trained in integrating visual and auditory cues for performance, may exhibit superior abilities in cross-audiovisual integration. This study aimed to explore whether these athletes demonstrate an expert advantage effect in audiovisual integration, particularly focusing on whether this advantage is due to enhanced automatic auditory processing. A total of 165 participants (81 male, 84 female) were included in three experiments. Experiment 1 (n = 63) used a cross-audiovisual Rapid Serial Visual Presentation (RSVP) paradigm to compare the martial arts routine athlete group (n = 31) with a control group (n = 33) in tasks requiring target stimulus identification under audiovisual congruent and incongruent conditions. Experiment 2 (n = 52) manipulated the synchronicity of auditory stimuli to differentiate between audiovisual integration and auditory alerting effects. Experiment 3 (n = 50) combined surprise and post-surprise tests to investigate the role of automatic auditory processing in this expert advantage. Experiment 1 revealed that martial arts routine athletes outperformed the control group, especially in semantically incongruent conditions, with significantly higher accuracy at both lag3 (p < 0.001, 95% CI = [0.165, 0.275]) and lag8 (p < 0.001, 95% CI = [0.242, 0.435]). Experiment 2 found no significant difference between groups in response to the manipulation of auditory stimulus synchronicity, ruling out an alerting effect. In Experiment 3, martial arts routine athletes demonstrated better performance in reporting unexpected auditory stimuli during the surprise test, indicating enhanced automatic processing capacity. Additionally, a significant improvement in working memory re-selection was observed in the martial arts routine group. The expert advantage effect observed in martial arts routine athletes is attributable to enhanced cross-audiovisual integration, independent of an auditory alerting mechanism. Long-term training improves the efficiency of working memory re-selection and the ability to inhibit conflicting information, suggesting that the expanded capacity for automatic auditory processing underpins their multisensory integration advantage. The present study focuses on investigating the contribution of puppetry as a pedagogical and psychosocial tool in special education, addressing the literature gap in the systematic documentation of the experiences of special education teachers, concerning its use in daily teaching practice. The main objective is to capture the way in which puppetry enhances the learning, social and therapeutic support of students with complex educational and psychosocial needs. The study employs a qualitative phenomenological approach, conducting semi-structured interviews with eleven special education teachers who integrate puppetry into their teaching. Qualitative data were analyzed using thematic analysis. The findings highlight that puppetry significantly enhances cognitive function, concentration, memory and language development, while promoting the active participation, cooperation, social inclusion and self-expression of students. In addition, the use of the puppet acts as a means of psycho-emotional empowerment, supporting positive behavior and helping students cope with stress and behavioral difficulties. Participants identified peer support, material adequacy and training as key factors for effective implementation, while conversely, a lack of resources and time is cited as a key obstacle. The integration of puppetry in everyday school life seems to ameliorate a more personalized, supportive and experiential learning environment, responding to the diverse and complex profiles of students attending special schools. Continuous training for teachers, along with strengthening the collaboration between the arts and special education, is essential for the effective use of puppetry in the classroom. Full article

Background: Art therapy is increasingly recognized as a valuable complementary intervention for individuals with eating disorders (EDs), who frequently experience comorbid anxiety and difficulties with emotional regulation. However, few studies have examined its short-term effects on state and trait anxiety within structured clinical settings. Methods: This pilot study involved 19 adolescent females (mean age 17.7 ± 2.1 years) diagnosed with anorexia nervosa (AN) or bulimia nervosa (BN) and admitted to the Mariconda Regional Residence for Eating Disorders (ASL Salerno, Italy) in residential or semi-residential treatment. Participants completed a structured six-week cycle of weekly textile-based art therapy sessions, designed to promote emotional expression and body reconnection. State and trait anxiety levels were assessed pre- and post-session using the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI). Repeated-measures ANOVA was used to analyze state anxiety changes; a linear mixed-effects model was applied to trait anxiety. Results: State anxiety significantly decreased immediately after sessions (p = 0.002). A significant main effect of session (p = 0.01) and a time × session interaction (p = 0.025) indicated variability across sessions. Trait anxiety showed a non-significant trend toward reduction (p = 0.11); however, reductions were significant at sessions 4 (p = 0.015), 5 (p < 0.001), and 6 (p = 0.005). Conclusions: Art therapy may offer immediate reductions in state anxiety and may contribute to a longer-term reduction in trait anxiety with 4–6 sessions. These findings support integrating creative interventions within multidisciplinary ED treatment programs. Future research with larger samples and control groups is needed to confirm and expand upon these preliminary results. Full article

Although ART leads to viral suppression, people living with HIV (PLWH) still face an increased risk of comorbidities, such as cancer. The HIV-1 Tat protein may contribute to the promotion of chronic inflammation, oxidative stress, and genomic instability. While the presence of anti-Tat antibodies has been associated with slower disease progression, their potential role in modulating DNA damage remains unclear. Assess the effect of anti-Tat antibodies on cytotoxic and DNA damage in PLWH. A cross-sectional study was conducted in 178 PLWH. Serum anti-Tat IgG antibodies were measured using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). Cytotoxicity and DNA damage were assessed via serum 8-hydroxy-2′-deoxyguanosine (8-OHdG) and nuclear anomalies (Micronucleus cytome assay) in 2000 buccal cells. Statistical significance was considered at p < 0.05. Anti-Tat antibodies were found in 24.2% of participants. Positive individuals had lower CD4+ T cell counts (p = 0.045) and higher levels of pyknosis (p = 0.0001). No differences in 8-OHdG were found, but 8-OHdG correlated positively with CD4+ counts (rho = 0.334, p = 0.006). Pyknosis negatively correlated with CD4+ counts (rho = −0.272, p = 0.027). Anti-Tat antibodies may not prevent DNA damage but could be related to cytotoxic effects in PLWH. Full article

Differences in Perceived Future Impacts of Climate Change on the Workforce Among Residents of British Columbia

Certain industries will bear a disproportionate share of the burden of climate change. Climate change risk perceptions can impact workers’ mental health and well-being; increased climate change risk perceptions are also associated with more favourable adaptive attitudes. It is, therefore, important to understand whether climate risk perceptions differ across workers between industries. We conducted an online survey of British Columbians (16+) in 2021 using social media advertisements. Participants rated how likely they believed their industry (Natural Resources, Science, Art and Recreation, Education/Law/Government, Health, Management/Business, Manufacturing, Sales, Trades) would be affected by climate change (on a scale from “Very Unlikely” to “Very Likely”). Ordinal logistic regression examined the association between occupational category and perceived industry vulnerability, adjusting for socio-demographic factors. Among 877 participants, 66.1% of Natural Resources workers perceived it was very/somewhat likely that climate change would impact their industry; only those in Science (78.3%) and Art and Recreation (71.4%) occupations had higher percentages. In the adjusted model, compared to Natural Resources workers, respondents in other occupations, including those in Art and Recreation, Education/Law/Government, Management/Business, Manufacturing, Sales, and Trades, perceived significantly lower risk of climate change-related industry impacts. Industry-specific interventions are needed to increase awareness of and readiness for climate adaptation. Policymakers and industry leaders should prioritize sectoral differences when designing interventions to support climate resilience in the workforce. Full article

DPAO-PFL: Dynamic Parameter-Aware Optimization via Continual Learning for Personalized Federated Learning

Federated learning (FL) enables multiple participants to collaboratively train models while efficiently mitigating the issue of data silos. However, large-scale heterogeneous data distributions result in inconsistent client objectives and catastrophic forgetting, leading to model bias and slow convergence. To address the challenges under non-independent and identically distributed (non-IID) data, we propose DPAO-PFL, a Dynamic Parameter-Aware Optimization framework that leverages continual learning principles to improve Personalized Federated Learning under non-IID conditions. We decomposed the parameters into two components: local personalized parameters tailored to client characteristics, and global shared parameters that capture the accumulated marginal effects of parameter updates over historical rounds. Specifically, we leverage the Fisher information matrix to estimate parameter importance online, integrate the path sensitivity scores within a time-series sliding window to construct a dynamic regularization term, and adaptively adjust the constraint strength to mitigate the conflict overall tasks. We evaluate the effectiveness of DPAO-PFL through extensive experiments on several benchmarks under IID and non-IID data distributions. Comprehensive experimental results indicate that DPAO-PFL outperforms baselines with improvements from 5.41% to 30.42% in average classification accuracy. By decoupling model parameters and incorporating an adaptive regularization mechanism, DPAO-PFL effectively balances generalization and personalization. Furthermore, DPAO-PFL exhibits superior performance in convergence and collaborative optimization compared to state-of-the-art FL methods. Full article

Lou Gehrig’s disease, also known as ALS, is a progressive neurodegenerative condition that weakens muscles and can lead to paralysis as it progresses. For patients with severe paralysis, eye-tracking devices such as eye mouse enable communication. However, the equipment is expensive, and the calibration process is very difficult and frustrating for patients to use. To alleviate this problem, we propose a simple and efficient method to type texts intuitively with graphical guidance on the screen. Specifically, the method detects patients’ eye blinks in video frames to navigate through three sequential steps, narrowing down the choices from 9 letters, to 3 letters, and finally to a single letter (from a 26-letter alphabet). In this way, a patient is able to rapidly type a letter of the alphabet by blinking a minimum of three times and a maximum of nine times. The proposed method integrates an API of large language model (LLM) to further accelerate text input and correct sentences in terms of typographical errors, spacing, and upper/lower case. Experiments on ten participants demonstrate that the proposed method significantly outperforms three state-of-the-art methods in both typing speed and typing accuracy, without requiring any calibration process.
