Does Corporate ESG Performance Influence Carbon Emissions?

Against the backdrop of increasingly severe global carbon emissions and China’s commitment to achieving carbon peaking by 2030, accelerating the transition to a low-carbon economy has become an urgent priority. As fundamental microeconomic entities, enterprises play a crucial role in the national governance of carbon emissions. This study uses panel data on Chinese A share listed companies from 2019 to 2023 and employs fixed effects models that control for firm, year, and industry effect to analyze how ESG performance influences carbon emissions and through which mechanism. The findings indicate that improvements in ESG ratings significantly reduce firms’ carbon emissions. This effect operates primarily through the following two channels: (1) promoting green technological innovation, thereby enhancing environmental performance, and (2) increasing the attention of financial analysts, which strengthens external monitoring. The heterogeneity analysis further reveals that the mitigating effect of ESG improvement on carbon emissions is more pronounced in firms with a lower proportion of institutional ownership, while this effect is relatively weaker in firms with higher institutional ownership. This suggests that in contexts where institutional investors hold a smaller share, firms may place greater emphasis on the policy pressure and social responsibility expectations associated with ESG performance, thereby exhibiting stronger commitment to emission reduction actions. In contrast, in firms dominated by institutional investors, the implementation of ESG policy objectives may be partially compromised due to the investors’ short-term profit orientation. This study provides empirical evidence for firms to fulfill their environmental and social responsibilities and offers actionable insights for investors aiming to promote sustainable development. From a policy perspective, the findings also offer theoretical support for developing differentiated regulatory strategies based on variations in ownership and shareholding structures. Full article

Thermodynamic free energy is used to elucidate the significance of energy dissipation-induced temperature rise on the performance, reliability, and durability of all systems, biological, chemical and physical. Transformation (a measure of reliability) and degradation (a measure of durability) are distinguished. The temperature rise mechanism is characterized by the microstructurothermal (MST) energy/entropy. A framework to quantify the contributions of the MST entropy to system transformation and degradation is introduced and demonstrated using diverse multi-physics systems: cardiovascular strain in humans, charge capacity of batteries, tribological wear of journal bearings, and shear strength of lubricating greases. Various levels of temperature-induced degradation are observed in the systems. Thermal degradation rate increases with process and energy dissipation rates. The benefits of active cooling on systems and materials are shown. This article is recommended to engineers, scientists, designers, medical doctors, and other system analysts for use in dissipation/degradation characterization and minimization. Full article

This study investigates the impact of injuries on National Basketball Association (NBA) player performance over 20 seasons, using large-scale performance data and a statistical evaluation. Injury events were matched with player–game performance metrics to assess how various injury types influence short-, medium-, and long-term performance outcomes, measured across 2-, 5-, and 10-game windows. Using paired sample t-tests and Cohen’s d, we quantified both the statistical significance and effect size of changes in key performance metrics before and after injury. The analysis applies paired t-tests and Cohen’s d to quantify the statistical and practical significance of performance deviations pre- and post-injury. Our results show that while most injury types are associated with measurable performance declines, especially in offensive and defensive ratings, certain categories, such as cardiovascular injuries, demonstrate counterintuitive improvements post-recovery. These patterns suggest that not all injuries have equivalent consequences and highlight the importance of individualized recovery protocols. This work contributes to the growing field of sports injury analytics by combining statistical modeling and sports analytics to deliver actionable insights for coaches, medical staff, and performance analysts in managing player rehabilitation and optimizing return-to-play decisions. From the perspective of credit ratings, this paper studies the impact of air pollution on corporate credit costs and the impact mechanism. Based on 2007–2022 data on A-share listed companies in the Chinese capital market, this paper uses a two-way fixed effects model to examine the impact of air pollution on corporate credit costs and the impact mechanism. The results show that air pollution increases the credit costs for enterprises because air pollution affects the sentiment of rating analysts, leading them to give more pessimistic credit ratings to enterprises located in areas with severe air pollution. The moderating effect analysis reveals that the effect of air pollution on the increase in corporate credit costs is more pronounced for high-polluting industries, manufacturing industries, and regions with weaker bank competition. Further analysis reveals that in the face of rising credit costs caused by air pollution, enterprises tend to adopt a combination strategy of increasing commercial credit financing and reducing the commercial credit supply to cope. Although this response behavior alleviates corporations’ own financial pressure, it may have a negative effect on supply chain stability. This paper provides new evidence that reveals that air pollution is an implicit cost in the capital market, enriching research in the fields of environmental governance and capital markets. Background: Tobacco use is disproportionately high in rural areas, contributing to elevated cancer mortality, yet it often goes untreated due to limited access to care, high poverty and uninsured rates, and co-occurring substance use disorders (SUDs). This study explored the utility of using rapid qualitative analysis (RQA) to guide the adaptation of a tobacco-free workplace program (TFWP) in Texas healthcare centers serving adults with SUDs in medically underserved areas. Methods: From September–December 2023 and May–July 2024, we conducted 11 pre-implementation, virtual semi-structured group interviews focused on adapting the TFWP to local contexts (N = 69); 7 with providers (n = 34) and managers (n = 12) and 4 with patients (n = 23) in 6 healthcare centers. Two qualified analysts independently summarized transcripts, using RQA templates of key domains drawn from interview guides to summarize and organize data in matrices, enabling systematic comparison. Results: The main themes identified were minimal organizational tobacco cessation support and practices, and attitudinal barriers, as follows: (1) the need for program materials tailored to local populations; (2) limited tobacco cessation practices and partial policies—staff requested guidance on enhancing tobacco screenings and cessation delivery, and integrating new interventions; (3) contradictory views on treating tobacco use that can inhibit implementation (e.g., wanting to quit yet anxious that quitting would cause SUD relapse); and (4) inadequate environmental supports—staff requested treating tobacco-use training, patients group cessation counseling; both requested nicotine replacement therapy. Conclusions: RQA identified key areas requiring capacity development through participants’ willingness to adopt the following adaptations: program content (e.g., trainings and tailored educational materials), delivery methods/systems (e.g., adopting additional tobacco care interventions) and implementation strategies (e.g., integrating tobacco cessation practices into routine care) critical to optimizing TFWP fit and implementation. The study findings can inform timely formative evaluation processes to design and tailor similar intervention efforts by addressing site-specific needs and implementation barriers to enhance program uptake. Objective: Recent evidence has suggested that sialendoscopy should be the first-line treatment for chronic sialadenitis. This study aimed to assess the efficacy of steroid irrigation during sialendoscopy in non-lithiasic chronic sialadenitis. Methods: We conducted a systematic search of the databases of PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science up to the 3rd of November 2024 for completed studies investigating the efficacy of steroid irrigation during sialendoscopy for chronic non-lithiasic sialadenitis. Primary outcomes were the number of patients with recurrence of sialadenitis symptoms and the number of patients who required a revision sialendoscopy. Secondary outcomes included the assessment of major complications of the procedure. Random-effect meta-analysis of proportion was conducted using Open Meta-Analyst software. Additionally, separate subgroup analyses linked to the underlying salivary gland disease were carried out. The quality of the included studies was evaluated utilizing the Moga tool and the ROBINS-I tool. Results: Thirty studies qualified for inclusion in the present systematic review. The weighted pooled proportion of recurrence after sialendoscopy by patient was 27.49% (95% CI: 21.04–34.45), whereas the revision rate was 10.64% (95% CI: 7.74–13.93). In every subgroup, the proposed intervention exhibited adequate efficacy for the symptomatic relief of patients, with similar rates of revision and repetition. The rate of major complications per patient was 0.77%. Conclusions: This study demonstrates that interventional sialendoscopy with intraductal steroid irrigation may yield therapeutic benefit for patients with chronic non-lithiasic sialadenitis and could be considered a safe treatment. ESG serves as a key metric for measuring corporate sustainability, but divergence among rating agencies has led to uncertainty in such an assessment. This investigation identifies ESG rating divergence as a critical catalyst for corporate digital transformation, establishing empirical analysis through a robust positive correlation between the heterogeneity in sustainability assessments and organizational digitalization intensity. Comprehensive robustness examinations and endogeneity controls substantiate the persistent significance of this relationship. Mechanistically, such divergence drives technological adaptation by restructuring the R&D team composition and elevating capital allocation toward innovative initiatives. Contextual heterogeneity manifests through amplified effects in firms with elevated analyst scrutiny and stringent internal governance, whereas pollution-intensive enterprises exhibit significant effect suppression. These findings collectively advance theoretical frameworks concerning ESG evaluation economics and digital transformation drivers, while furnishing actionable implementation blueprints for corporate digitization strategists. Background: The relationship between medicinal efficacy and the geographical environment in Thesium chinense Turcz. (T. chinense Turcz.), a traditional Chinese herb, remains systematically unexplored. This study integrates metabolomics, machine learning, and ecological factor analysis to elucidate the geographical variation patterns and regulatory mechanisms of secondary metabolites in T. chinense Turcz. from Anhui, Henan, and Shanxi Provinces. Methods: Metabolomic profiling was conducted on T. chinense Turcz. samples collected from three geographical origins across Anhui, Henan, and Shanxi Provinces. Machine learning algorithms (Random Forest, LASSO regression) identified region-specific biomarkers through intersection analysis. Metabolic pathway enrichment employed MetaboAnalyst 5.0 with target prediction. Antioxidant activity (DPPH/hydroxyl radical scavenging) was quantified spectrophotometrically. Environmental correlation analysis incorporated 19 WorldClim variables using redundancy analysis, Mantel tests, and Pearson correlations. Results: We identified 43 geographical marker compounds (primarily flavonoids and alkaloids). Random forest and LASSO regression algorithms determined core markers for each production area: Anhui (4 markers), Henan (6 markers), and Shanxi (3 markers). Metabolic pathway enrichment analysis revealed these markers exert pharmacological effects through neuroactive ligand–receptor interaction and PI3K-Akt signaling pathways. Redundancy analysis demonstrated Anhui samples exhibited significantly higher antioxidant activity (DPPH and hydroxyl radical scavenging rates) than other regions, strongly correlating with stable low-temperature environments (annual mean temperature) and precipitation patterns. Conclusions: This study established the first geo-specific molecular marker system for T. chinense Turcz., demonstrating that the geographical environment critically influences metabolic profiles and bioactivity. Findings provide a scientific basis for quality control standards of geo-authentic herbs and offer insights into plant–environment interactions for sustainable cultivation practices. Full article

Transportation agencies face increasing challenges in identifying and prioritizing which infrastructure assets are most critical to maintain and protect, particularly amid aging networks, limited budgets, and growing threats from climate change and extreme events. However, existing prioritization approaches often lack consistency and fail to adequately incorporate diverse stakeholder perspectives. This study develops a systematic, stakeholder-informed method for ranking transportation assets based on their criticality to the overall transportation system. As a novel approach, we use the analytical hierarchy process (AHP) and present a case study of the applied approach. Six criteria were identified for ranking assets: annual average daily traffic (AADT), redundancy, freight output, roadway classification, Social Vulnerability Index (SoVI), and tourism. Stakeholder input was collected via an AHP-based survey using pairwise comparisons and translated into weighted rankings. Thirty complete responses (13.2% response rate) from experts (i.e., engineers, analysts, planners, etc.) were analyzed, with the resulting ranks from highest to lowest priority being AADT, redundancy, freight output, roadway classification, SoVI, and tourism. Stability analysis confirmed that rankings were consistent with a minimum of 15 responses. The resulting method provides a practical, replicable tool for agencies to perform statewide vulnerability/resiliency assessments ensuring that decision-making reflects a broad range of expert perspectives. Monitoring the blast furnace shaft static pressure is crucial for maintaining a stable ironmaking process. Traditional rule-based methods and manual inspections suffer from high labor costs and inconsistent standards. This article proposes a new unsupervised anomaly detection framework that combines adversarial autoencoder with variational mode decomposition (VMD). Firstly, using VMD combined with sample entropy calculation and clustering algorithm, the trend, period, and other components of multidimensional signals are extracted, and then these components are integrated into an improved adversarial training autoencoder to detect global and local anomalies. The proposed method has an accuracy of 0.95, a recall rate of 0.91, and an F1 score of 0.93. Which demonstrates the method effectively captures multi-scale anomalies including value bias, morphological changes, and sudden fluctuations, while providing analysts with interpretable anomaly detail diagnosis. In this paper, the Revised Universal Soil Loss Equation (RUSLE) model has been employed as a critical analytical instrument to assess the likelihood of soil erosion and pinpoint the most appropriate locations for conservation initiatives in the Wadi Mina basin (Algeria). The compilation of thematic maps was accomplished through the integration of the Spatial Analyst module in ArcGIS, resulting in a comprehensive map depicting potential erosion. This process incorporated rainfall data collected over a four-decade period from 1971 to 2010. The findings of this study demonstrate that the intensity of soil erosion and the generation of sediment are influenced by the topographical characteristics of the region, and the steepness of the terrain. Soil erosion within the Wadi Mina basin presents notable fluctuations, spanning a spectrum from a low of 0 to a high of 772.16 tons per hectare annually, with the mean annual erosion rate calculated at 16.69 tons per hectare. The Sediment Delivery Ratio (SDR) for the basin is estimated to be around 19.20%. Understanding soil erosion patterns at different sub-basin levels can be valuable for designing effective conservation strategies. This information helps to implement erosion control measures and to improve overall environmental management within the basin. Full article

Background: The suicide rate among Iraqis is rising, with many analysts attributing it to political instability, exposure to trauma, economic hopelessness, social stigma surrounding mental health as well as cultural and societal pressures. However, the prevalence of suicidal ideation and associated risk factors in Iraqi youth is unknown, requiring urgent attention and effective public health initiatives. Thus, the aim of this study was to explore rates of suicidal ideation and associated risk factors among female secondary school students in Baghdad, Iraq. Method: A cross-sectional study was conducted, utilising quantitative survey data collected in four girls’ secondary schools across Baghdad, Iraq, between August and December 2023. The survey consisted of questions relating to their demographic characteristics (age, gender, school) and a series of measures pertaining to participants’ levels of suicidal ideation, as well as factors commonly identified in the literature as predictors of suicide. Results: Four-hundred and two female participants took part. Participants were aged between 13 and 17 years (M = 15.50; SD = 1.22). In total 11.3% of the students scored in the at-risk range for suicidal behaviour and only 20.1% (n = 91) said they had not had some thoughts of suicide in the previous two weeks. Previous diagnoses of anxiety, high levels of depression and hopelessness, and poor quality of life were significant risk factors for suicidal ideation. On average, students reported moderate levels of depression and high levels of hopelessness. Conclusions: Female Iraqi secondary school students experience high levels of suicidality, alongside several other known risk factors for suicide ideation. However, a limitation of this study is that cross-sectional designs limit causal interpretation. Findings emphasise the importance of developing targeted school-based interventions to support students’ mental health. Increasing research and attention in this area is vital to not only improving the mental health of students in Iraq but also reducing the stigma around mental health and suicide. Future policies should include specific mental health support for those young people affected by conflict, displacement and family loss, integrating trauma-informed care into both mental health and educational services. Cascading Landslide–Barrier Dam–Outburst Flood Hazard: A Systematic Study Using Rockfall Analyst and HEC-RAS

Landslide hazard chains pose significant threats in mountainous areas worldwide, yet their cascading effects remain insufficiently studied. This study proposes an integrated framework to systematically assess the landslide-landslide dam-outburst flood hazard chain in mountainous river systems. First, landslide susceptibility is assessed through a random forest model incorporating 11 static environmental and geological factors. The surface deformation rate derived from SABS-InSAR technology is incorporated as a dynamic factor to improve classification accuracy. Second, motion trajectories of rock masses in high-risk zones are identified by Rockfall Analyst model to predict potential river blockages by landslide dams, and key geometric parameters of the landslide dams are predicted using a predictive model. Third, the 2D HEC-RAS model is used to simulate outburst flood evolution. Results reveal that: (1) incorporating surface deformation rate as a dynamic factor significantly improves the predictive accuracy of landslide susceptibility assessment; (2) landslide-induced outburst floods exhibit greater destructive potential and more complex inundation dynamics than conventional mountain flash floods; and (3) the outburst flood propagation process exhibits three sequential phases defined by the Outburst Flood Arrival Time (FAT): initial rapid advancement phase, intermediate lateral diffusion phase, and mature floodplain development phase. These phases represent critical temporal thresholds for initiating timely downstream evacuation. This study contributes to the advancement of early warning systems aimed at protecting downstream communities from outburst floods triggered by landslide hazard chains. It enables researchers to better analyze the complex dynamics of such cascading events and to develop effective risk reduction strategies applicable in vulnerable regions. Full article

In recent years, negative electricity prices have ceased to be a rare phenomenon and are becoming a new reality in markets with a high share of renewable energy sources. This introductory article examines the increasing frequency of negative prices—particularly in Germany—as a consequence of the rapid expansion of solar and wind power plants. It highlights the sharp decline in the so-called capture rate for renewable producers and outlines technical, market-based, and regulatory solutions to this challenge. As the energy transition accelerates, key questions emerge concerning grid flexibility, market design, and investment returns. This article also serves as a call to researchers, analysts, and energy professionals to join the ongoing discussion by contributing their insights, case studies, and innovative solutions to this Special Issue of Energies. Are negative prices merely a transitional side effect of decarbonization or a warning sign of deeper systemic inefficiencies? Join the debate and help shape the future of sustainable energy. The Impact of ESG Practices on the Valuation of Related Party M&A Assets: The Moderating Role of Digital Economy

The overvaluation of merger and acquisition (M&A) assets can lead to a decline in the performance of listed firms, an increase in the risk of goodwill impairment, and harm to the rights of minority shareholders, as well as to the sustainable development of firms. Based on stakeholder theory, this article constructs models to examine the impact of environmental, social, and governance (ESG) practices on the valuation of related party M&A assets and conducts an empirical analysis. We find that ESG practices significantly inhibit the overvaluation of related party M&A assets, and the digital economy can enhance this negative relationship. Mechanism analysis shows that this negative relationship is mediated through setting up stock performance compensation, reducing performance commitment growth rate, selecting reputable asset appraisal institutions and financial advisors, increasing analyst following and social media discussions, and reducing agency costs. Heterogeneity analysis shows that the inhibitory effect of ESG practices on the overvaluation of related party M&A assets is more obvious in non-horizontal M&A and non-state-owned enterprises. Furthermore, ESG practices can alleviate the stock price crash risk by reducing the overvaluation of related party M&A assets. The research conclusions provide a reference for ESG practices to better serve M&A activities and alleviate asset overvaluation in the digital economy era. Full article
