The growing global demand for electricity, driven by the development of electromobility, data centers, and smart technologies, necessitates innovative approaches to energy generation. Wind power, as a clean and renewable energy source, plays a pivotal role in the global transition towards low-carbon power systems. This paper presents a comprehensive review of generator technologies used in wind turbine applications, ranging from conventional synchronous and asynchronous machines to advanced concepts such as low-speed direct-drive (DD) generators, axial-flux topologies, and superconducting generators utilizing low-temperature superconductors (LTS) and high-temperature superconductors (HTS). The advantages and limitations of each design are discussed in the context of efficiency, weight, reliability, scalability, and suitability for offshore deployment. Special attention is given to HTS-based generator systems, which offer superior power density and reduced losses, along with challenges related to cryogenic cooling and materials engineering. Furthermore, the paper analyzes selected modern generator designs to provide references for enhancing the performance of grid-synchronized hybrid microgrids integrating solar PV, wind, battery energy storage, and HTS-enhanced generators. This review serves as a valuable resource for researchers and engineers developing next-generation wind energy technologies with improved efficiency and integration potential. Full article

Τhe Greek Seas are one of the most favorable locations for offshore wind energy development in the Mediterranean basin. In 2023, the Hellenic Hydrocarbons & Energy Resources Management Company SA published the draft National Offshore Wind Farm Development Programme (NDP-OWF), including the main pillars for the design, development, siting, installation, and exploitation of offshore wind farms, along with the Strategic Environmental Impact Assessment. The NDP-OWF is under assessment by the relevant authorities and is expected to be finally approved through a Joint Ministerial Decision. In this work, the preliminary offshore wind energy assessment of the Greek Seas is performed using the CERRA wind reanalysis data and in situ measurements from six offshore locations of the Greek Seas. The in situ measurements are used in order to assess the performance of the reanalysis datasets. The results reveal that CERRA is a reliable source for preliminary offshore wind energy assessment studies. Taking into consideration the potential offshore wind farm organized development areas (OWFODA) according to the NDP-OWF, the study of the local wind characteristics is performed. The local wind speed and wind power density are assessed, and the wind energy produced from each OWFODA is estimated based on three different capacity density settings. According to the balanced setting (capacity density of 5.0 MW/km2), the annual energy production will be 17.5 TWh, which is equivalent to 1509.1 ktoe. An analysis of the wind energy correlation, synergy, and complementarity between the OWFODA is also performed, and a high degree of wind energy synergy is identified, with a very low degree of complementarity. The multiscale interactive system composed of wind, leaves, and droplets serves as a critical dynamic unit in precision orchard spraying. Its coupling mechanisms fundamentally influence pesticide transport pathways, deposition patterns, and drift behavior within crop canopies, forming the foundational basis for achieving intelligent and site-specific spraying operations. This review systematically examines the synergistic dynamics across three hierarchical scales: Droplet–leaf surface wetting and adhesion at the microscale; leaf cluster motion responses at the mesoscale; and the modulation of airflow and spray plume diffusion by canopy architecture at the macroscale. Key variables affecting spray performance—such as wind speed and turbulence structure, leaf biomechanical properties, droplet size and electrostatic characteristics, and spatial canopy heterogeneity—are identified and analyzed. Furthermore, current advances in multiscale modeling approaches and their corresponding experimental validation techniques are critically evaluated, along with their practical boundaries of applicability. Results indicate that while substantial progress has been made at individual scales, significant bottlenecks remain in the integration of cross-scale models, real-time acquisition of critical parameters, and the establishment of high-fidelity experimental platforms. Future research should prioritize the development of unified coupling frameworks, the integration of physics-based and data-driven modeling strategies, and the deployment of multimodal sensing technologies for real-time intelligent spray decision-making. These efforts are expected to provide both theoretical foundations and technological support for advancing precision and intelligent orchard spraying systems. Full article

This study examines a convergence event at the trailing end of a cold front observed in the United States’ Southern Great Plains region on 28 September 1997, using an array of in situ and remote sensing instruments. The event exhibited a structure with elevated divergence near 3 km AGL and moisture transport over both warm and cold sectors. Data from Raman lidar (RL), Atmospheric Emitted Radiance Interferometer (AERI), and Radar Wind Profilers (RWP) were used to characterize vertical profiles of the event, revealing the presence of a narrow moist updraft, horizontal moisture advection, and cloud development ahead of the front. Convection parameters, Convective Available Potential Energy (CAPE) and Convective Inhibition (CIN), were derived from collocated AERI and RL. Regions of high CAPE were aligned with areas of high moisture, indicating that convection was more favorable at moist elevated levels than near the surface. RWP observations revealed vorticity structures consistent with existing theories. This study highlights the value of high-resolution, continuous profiling from remote sensors to resolve mesoscale processes and evaluate convection potential. The event underscores the role of elevated moisture and wind shear in modulating convection initiation along a trailing-end cold front boundary where mesoscale and synoptic forces interact. Wind power output sequences exhibit strong randomness and intermittency characteristics; traditional single forecasting models struggle to capture the internal features of sequences and are highly susceptible to interference from high-frequency noise and predictive accuracy is still notably poor at the peaks where the power curve undergoes abrupt changes. To address the poor fitting at peaks, a short-term wind power forecasting method based on the improved Informer model is proposed. First, the temporal convolutional network (TCN) is introduced to enhance the model’s ability to capture regional segment features along the temporal dimension, enhancing the model’s receptive field to address wind power fluctuation under varying environmental conditions. Next, a discrete cosine transform (DCT) is employed for adaptive modeling of frequency dependencies between channels, converting the time series data into frequency domain representations to extract its frequency features. These frequency domain features are then weighted using a channel attention mechanism to improve the model’s ability to capture peak features and resist noise interference. Finally, the Informer generative decoder is used to output the power prediction results, this enables the model to simultaneously leverage neighboring temporal segment features and long-range inter-temporal dependencies for future wind-power prediction, thereby substantially improving the fitting accuracy at power-curve peaks. Experimental results validate the effectiveness and practicality of the proposed model; compared with other models, the proposed approach reduces MAE by 9.14–42.31% and RMSE by 12.57–47.59%. Addressing lateral-directional control challenges during unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) landing in complex wind fields, this study proposes a drift angle control strategy that integrates coordinated heading and trajectory regulation. An adaptive radius optimization method for the Dubins approach path is designed using wind speed estimation. By developing a wind-coupled flight dynamics model, we establish a roll angle control loop combining the L1 nonlinear guidance law with Linear Active Disturbance Rejection Control (LADRC). Simulation tests against conventional sideslip approach and crab approach, along with flight tests, confirm that the proposed autonomous landing system achieves smoother attitude transitions during landing while meeting all touchdown performance requirements. This solution provides a theoretically rigorous and practically viable approach for safe UAV landings in challenging wind conditions. Full article

The Copernicus European Regional Reanalysis (CERRA) was released in August 2022, providing a continental atmospheric reanalysis, and, in addition, the New European Wind Atlas (NEWA) is a recently released hindcast product that can be used to create a high temporal and spatial resolution wind resource atlas of Europe. In order to demonstrate the suitability of the NEWA and CERRA wind datasets for offshore wind energy applications, the accuracy of these datasets was assessed for the Mediterranean Sea, a basin with a high potential for the development of offshore wind projects. Long-term in situ measurements from 13 offshore locations along the basin were used in order to assess the performance of the CERRA and NEWA wind speed datasets in the hourly and seasonal time scales by using a variety of different evaluation tools. The results revealed that the CERRA dataset outperforms NEWA and is a reliable source for offshore wind energy assessment studies in the examined areas, although special attention should be paid to extreme value analysis of the wind speed. In the process of the work of a coal power station is formed ash and slag, which, along with process water, are deposited in the dumps. Coal ash waste dumps significantly degrade the surrounding environment due to their unprotected surfaces, which are highly susceptible to wind and water erosion. This results in the dispersion of contaminants into adjacent ecosystems. Pollutants migrate into terrestrial and aquatic systems, compromising soil quality and water resources, and posing documented risks to the environment and human health. Primary succession on the coal ash dumps of the Apatity thermal power plant (Murmansk Region, NW Russia) was initiated by cyanobacterial colonization. We studied cyanobacterial communities inhabiting three spoil sites that varied in time since decommissioning. These sites are characterized by exceptionally high concentrations of calcium and magnesium oxides—levels approximately double those found in the region’s natural soils. A total of 18 cyanobacterial taxa were identified in disposal sites. Morphological analysis of visible surface crusts revealed 16 distinct species. Furthermore, 24 cyanobacterial strains representing 11 species were successfully isolated into unialgal culture and tested with a molecular genetic approach to confirm their identification from 16S rRNA. Three species were determined with molecular evidence. Cyanobacterial colonization of coal fly ash disposal sites begins immediately after deposition. Primary communities initially exhibit low species diversity (four taxa) and do not form a continuous ground cover in the early years. However, as succession progresses—illustrated by observations from a 30-year-old deposit—spontaneous surface revegetation occurs, accompanied by a marked increase in cyanobacterial diversity, reaching 12 species. On 10 May 2024, a super geomagnetic storm with a minimum Dst index of less than −400 nT occurred. It has attracted a significant amount of attention in the literature. Using total electron content (TEC) observations from a global navigation satellite system (GNSS), in situ electron density data from the Swarm satellite, and corresponding simulations from the thermosphere–ionosphere–electrodynamics general circulation model (TIEGCM), the dynamic poleward shift of the equatorial ionization anomaly (EIA) during the main phase of the super geomagnetic storm has been explored. The results show that the EIA crests moved poleward from ±15° magnetic latitude (MLat) to ±20° MLat at around 19.6 UT, to ±25° MLat at 21.2 UT, and to ±31° MLat at 22.7 UT. This poleward shift was primarily driven by the enhanced eastward electric field, neutral winds, and ambipolar diffusion. Storm-induced meridional winds can move ionospheric plasma upward/downward along geomagnetic field lines, causing the poleward movement of EIA crests, with minor contributions from zonal winds. Ambipolar diffusion contributes/prevents the formation of EIA crests at most EIA latitudes/the equatorward edge. Full article

Laizhou Bay, a semi-enclosed bay, is prone to storm surges from cold waves due to its geographic and environmental characteristics. This study uses satellite data, in situ measurements, and the MIKE numerical model to analyze storm surges along Laizhou Bay’s coast under no-dike conditions. It examines the surges caused by cold waves with different intensities and directions. This study provides the storm surge disaster risk levels along Laizhou Bay’s coast. The results show that the maximum sustained wind speed during cold waves is distributed between the NW and NE. The NE wind direction causes the most severe storm surge along Laizhou Bay. Under NE-directed cold waves with level 12 wind, the maximum risk areas for Level III and IV are approximately 1341 km2 and 1294 km2, respectively. Dongying, Shouguang, and Hanting exhibit large Level I and II risk zones. The maximum seawater intrusion distance along the Kenli coast is about 41 km. The coastal segment from Kenli to Changyi is most severely affected by storm surges. It is recommended to effectively maintain and heighten seawalls along this segment to mitigate storm surge disasters caused by strong NE winds. Full article

To meet the requirements of the high spatiotemporal three-dimensional (3D) airflow field within the glide path corridor during carrier-based aircraft/unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) landings, this paper proposes a prediction method for high spatiotemporal resolution 3D ship airwake along the glide path by integrating computational fluid dynamics (CFD), backpropagation (BP) neural network, and Doppler wind lidar (DWL). Firstly, taking the conceptual design aircraft carrier model as the research object, CFD numerical simulations of the ship airwake within the glide path region are carried out using the Poly-Hexcore grid and the detached eddy simulation (DES)/the Reynolds-averaged Navier–Stokes (RANS) turbulence models. Then, using the high spatial resolution ship airwake along the glide path obtained from steady RANS computations under different inflow conditions as a sample dataset, the BP neural network prediction models were trained and optimized. Along the ideal glide path within 200 m behind the stern, the correlation coefficients between the predicted results of the BP neural network and the headwind, crosswind, and vertical wind of the testing samples exceeded 0.95, 0.91, and 0.82, respectively. Finally, using the inflow speed and direction with high temporal resolution from the bow direction obtained by the shipborne DWL as input, the BP prediction models can achieve accurate prediction of the 3D ship airwake along the glide path with high spatiotemporal resolution (3 m, 3 Hz). Carrier-based aircraft recovery is a critical and challenging phase in maritime operations due to the turbulent airwake generated by aircraft carriers, which significantly increases the workload of flight control systems and pilots. This study investigates the airwake effects of an aircraft carrier under varying wind direction conditions. A high-fidelity mathematical model combining delayed detached-eddy simulation (DDES) with the overset grid method was developed to analyze key flow characteristics, including upwash, downwash, and lateral recirculation. The model ensures precise control of aircraft speed and trajectory during landing while maintaining numerical stability through rigorous mesh optimization. The results indicate that the minimum lift occurs in the downwash region aft of the deck, marking it as the most hazardous zone during landing. Aircraft above the deck are primarily influenced by ground effects, causing a sudden increase in lift that complicates arresting wire engagement. Additionally, the side force on the aircraft undergoes an abrupt reversal during the approach phase. The dual overset mesh technique effectively captures the coupled motion of the hull and aircraft, revealing higher turbulence intensity along the glideslope and a wider range of lift fluctuations compared to stationary hull conditions. These findings provide valuable insights for optimizing carrier-based aircraft recovery procedures, offering more realistic data for simulation training and enhancing pilot preparedness for airwake-induced disturbances. The maritime industry faces growing pressure to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, reflected in the progressive adoption of stricter international energy regulations. Wind-Assisted Propulsion Systems (WAPS) offer a promising solution by significantly contributing to decarbonization. This paper presents a versatile simulation and optimization platform that supports the conceptual design of WAPS-equipped vessels and evaluates the viability of such investments. The platform uses a steady-state force equilibrium model to simulate vessel performance along predefined routes under realistic weather conditions, incorporating regulatory frameworks and economic assessments. A multi-objective optimization framework identifies optimal designs across user-defined criteria. To demonstrate its capabilities, the platform is applied to a bulk carrier operating between China and the USA, optimizing for capital expenditure, net present value (NPV), and CO2 emissions. Results show the platform can effectively balance conflicting objectives, achieving substantial emissions reductions without compromising economic performance. The final optimized design achieved a 12% reduction in CO2 emissions, a 7% decrease in capital expenditure, and a 6.6 million USD increase in net present value compared to the reference design with sails, demonstrating the platform’s capability to deliver balanced improvements across all objectives. To overcome the complexity of yarn color measurement using spectrophotometry with yarn winding techniques and to enhance consistency with human visual perception, a yarn color measurement method based on digital photography is proposed. This study employs a photographic colorimetry system to capture digital images of single yarns. The yarn and background are segmented using the K-means clustering algorithm, and the centerline of the yarn is extracted using a skeletonization algorithm. Spectral reconstruction and colorimetric principles are then applied to calculate the color values of pixels along the centerline. Considering the nonlinear characteristics of human brightness perception, the final yarn color is obtained through a nonlinear texture-adaptive weighted computation. The method is validated through psychophysical experiments using six yarns of different colors and compared with spectrophotometry and five other photographic measurement methods. Results indicate that among the seven yarn color measurement methods, including spectrophotometry, the proposed method—based on centerline extraction and nonlinear texture-adaptive weighting—yields results that more closely align with actual visual perception. Furthermore, among the six photographic measurement methods, the proposed method produces most similar to those obtained using spectrophotometry. This study demonstrates the inconsistency between spectrophotometric measurements and human visual perception of yarn color and provides methodological support for developing visually consistent color measurement methods for textured textiles. Split-shaft wind turbines decouple the turbine’s shaft from the generator’s shaft, enabling several modifications in the drivetrain. One of the significant achievements of a split-shaft drivetrain is the reduction in size of the excitation circuit. The grid-side converter is eliminated, and the rotor-side converter can safely reduce its size to a fraction of a full-size excitation. Therefore, this low-power-rated converter operates at low voltage and handles regular operations well. However, fault conditions may expose weaknesses in the converter and push it to its limits. This paper investigates the effects of the reduced-size rotor-side converter on the voltage ride-through capabilities required from all wind turbines. Four different protection circuits, including the active crowbar, active crowbar along a resistor–inductor circuit (C-RL), series dynamic resistor (SDR), and new-bridge fault current limiter (NBFCL), are employed, and their effects are investigated and compared. Wind turbine controllers are also utilized to reduce the impact of faults on the power electronic converters. One effective method is to store excess energy in the generator’s rotor. The proposed low-voltage ride-through strategies are simulated in MATLAB Simulink (2022b) to validate the results and demonstrate their effectiveness and functionality. Full article
