Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) have rapidly grown into different essential applications, including surveillance, disaster response, agriculture, and urban monitoring. However, for UAVS to steer safely and autonomously, the ability to detect obstacles and nearby aircraft remains crucial, especially under hard environmental conditions. This study comprehensively analyzes the recent landscape of obstacle and aircraft detection techniques tailored for UAVs acting in difficult scenarios such as fog, rain, smoke, low light, motion blur, and disorderly environments. It starts with a detailed discussion of key detection challenges and continues with an evaluation of different sensor types, from RGB and infrared cameras to LiDAR, radar, sonar, and event-based vision sensors. Both classical computer vision methods and deep learning-based detection techniques are examined in particular, highlighting their performance strengths and limitations under degraded sensing conditions. The paper additionally offers an overview of suitable UAV-specific datasets and the evaluation metrics generally used to evaluate detection systems. Finally, the paper examines open problems and coming research directions, emphasising the demand for lightweight, adaptive, and weather-resilient detection systems appropriate for real-time onboard processing. This study aims to guide students and engineers towards developing stronger and intelligent detection systems for next-generation UAV operations. Full article

Prognostic and Health Management (PHM) strategies are gaining increasingly more traction in almost every field of engineering, offering stakeholders advanced capabilities in system monitoring, anomaly detection, and predictive maintenance. Primary flight control actuators are safety-critical elements within aircraft flight control systems (FCSs), and currently, they are mainly based on Electro-Hydraulic Actuators (EHAs) or Electro-Hydrostatic Actuators (EHSAs). Despite the widespread diffusion of PHM methodologies, the application of these technologies for EHAs is still somewhat limited, and the available information is often restricted to the industrial sector. To fill this gap, this paper provides an in-depth analysis of state-of-the-art EHA PHM strategies for aerospace applications, as well as their limitations and further developments through a Systematic Literature Review (SLR). An objective and clear methodology, combined with the use of attractive and informative graphics, guides the reader towards a thorough investigation of the state of the art, as well as the challenges in the field that limit a wider implementation. It is deemed that the information presented in this review will be useful for new researchers and industry engineers as it provides indications for conducting research in this specific and still not very investigated sector. The aircraft nose-wheel steering system serves as a critical component for ensuring ground taxiing safety and maneuvering efficiency. However, its dynamic control stability faces significant challenges under complex operational conditions. Existing research predominantly focuses on single-discipline modeling, with insufficient in-depth analysis of the coupling effects between hydraulic system dynamics and mechanical dynamics. Traditional PID controllers exhibit limitations in scenarios involving nonlinear time-varying conditions caused by normal load fluctuations of the landing gear buffer strut during high-speed landing phases, including increased control overshoot and inadequate adaptability to abrupt load variations. These issues severely compromise the stability of high-speed deviation correction and overall aircraft safety. To address these challenges, this study constructs a digital twin model based on real aircraft data and innovatively implements multidisciplinary co-simulation via Simcenter 3D, AMESim 2021.1, and MATLAB R2020a. A fuzzy adaptive PID controller is specifically designed to achieve adaptive adjustment of control parameters. Comparative analysis through co-simulation demonstrates that the proposed mechanical–electrical–hydraulic collaborative control strategy significantly reduces response delay, effectively minimizes control overshoot, and decreases hydraulic pressure-fluctuation amplitude by over 85.2%. This work provides a novel methodology for optimizing steering stability under nonlinear interference scenarios, offering substantial engineering applicability and promotion value. Full article

Ultrahigh-temperature ceramic composites based on hafnium diboride have a wide range of applications, including as components for high-speed aircraft and energy generation and storage devices. Consequently, developing methodologies for their fabrication and studying their properties are of paramount importance, in particular in using them as an electrode material for energy storage devices with increased oxidation resistance. This study investigates the behavior of ceramic composites based on the HfB2-HfO2-SiC system, obtained using 15 vol% Ti2AlC MAX-phase as a sintering component, under the influence of subsonic flow of dissociated air. It was determined that incorporating the modifying component (Ti2AlC) altered the composition of the silicate melt formed on the surface during ceramic oxidation. This modification led to the observation of a protective antioxidant function. Consequently, liquation was observed in the silicate melt layer, resulting in the formation of spherical phase inhomogeneities in its volume with increased content of titanium, aluminum, and hafnium. It is hypothesized that the increase in the high-temperature viscosity of this melt prevents it from being carried away in the form of drops, even at a surface temperature of ~1900–2000 °C. Despite the established temperature, there is no sharp increase in its values above 2400–2500 °C. This is due to the evaporation of silicate melt from the surface. In addition, the electrochemical behavior of the obtained material in a liquid electrolyte medium (KOH, 3 mol/L) was examined, and it was shown that according to the value of electrical conductivity and specific capacitance, it is a promising electrode material for supercapacitors. The present paper reports for the first time the comparison of radar-derived eddy dissipation rate (EDR) and vertical velocity with measurements from six aircraft for an intense squall line crossing Hong Kong. The study objectives are three-fold: (i) to characterise the structural dynamics of the intense squall line; (ii) to identify the dynamical change in EDR and vertical velocity during its eastward propagation across Hong Kong with a view to gaining insight into the intensity change of the squall line and the severity of its impact on aircraft flying near it; (iii) to carry out quantitative comparison of EDR and vertical velocity derived from remote sensing instruments, i.e., weather radars and in situ measurements from aircraft, so that the quality of the former dataset can be evaluated by the latter. During the passage of the squall line and taking reference of the radar reflectivity, vertical circulation and the subsiding flow at the rear, it appeared to be weakening in crossing over Hong Kong, possibly due to land friction by terrain and urban morphology. This is also consistent with the maximum gusts recorded by the dense network of ground-based anemometers in Hong Kong. However, from the EDR and the vertical velocity of the aircraft, the weakening trend was not very apparent, and rather severe turbulence was still recorded by the aircraft flying through the squall line into the region with stratiform precipitation when the latter reached the eastern coast of Hong Kong. In general, the radar-based and the aircraft-based EDRs are consistent with each other. The radar-retrieved maximum vertical velocity may be smaller in magnitude at times, possibly arising from the limited spatial and temporal resolutions of the aircraft data. The results of this paper could be a useful reference for the development of radar-based turbulence products for aviation applications. Full article

This article presents the design, development, and evaluation of an AI-based assistant tailored to support users in the application of the Specific Operations Risk Assessment (SORA) methodology for unmanned aircraft systems. Built on a customized language model, the assistant was trained using system-level instructions with the goal of translating complex regulatory concepts into clear and actionable guidance. The approach combines structured definitions, contextualized examples, constrained response behavior, and references to authoritative sources such as JARUS and EASA. Rather than substituting expert or regulatory roles, the assistant provides process-oriented support, helping users understand and complete the various stages of risk assessment. The model’s effectiveness is illustrated through practical interaction scenarios, demonstrating its value across educational, operational, and advisory use cases, and its potential to contribute to the digital transformation of safety and compliance processes in the drone ecosystem. In this study, we evaluated the spatial variability in droplet deposition in herbicide applications using a remotely piloted aircraft (RPA) in pasture areas. The investigation was conducted in a square grid (50.0 m × 50.0 m), with 121 sampling points, at two operational flight heights (3.0 and 4.0 m). Droplet deposition was quantified using the fluorescent dye rhodamine B, and the droplet spectrum was characterised using water-sensitive paper tags. Geostatistical analysis was implemented to characterise spatial dependence, complemented by multivariate statistical analysis. Droplet deposition ranged from 1.01 to 9.02 and 1.10–6.10 μL cm−2 at 3.0 and 4.0 m flight heights, respectively, with the coefficients of variation between 19.72 and 23.06% for droplet spectrum parameters. All droplet spectrum parameters exhibited a moderate to strong spatial dependence (relative nugget effect ≤75%) and a predominance of adjustment to the exponential model, with spatial dependence indices ranging from 12.55 to 47.49% between the two flight heights. Significant positive correlations were observed between droplet deposition and droplet spectrum parameters (r = 0.60–0.79 at 3.0 m; r = 0.37–0.66 at 4.0 m), with the correlation magnitude decreasing as the operational flight height increased. Cross-validation indices demonstrated acceptable accuracy in spatial prediction, with a mean estimation error ranging from −0.030 to 0.044 and a root mean square error ranging from 0.81 to 2.25 across parameters and flight heights. Principal component analysis explained 99.14 and 85.72% of the total variation at 3.0 and 4.0 m flight heights, respectively. The methodological integration of geostatistics and multivariate statistics provides a comprehensive understanding of the spatial variability in droplet deposition, with relevant implications for the optimisation of phytosanitary applications performed using RPAs. This paper proposes a novel hierarchical control architecture that combines Model Predictive Control (MPC) with Explicit Model-Following Control (EMFC) to enable accurate and efficient trajectory tracking for quadrotor electric Vertical Takeoff and Landing (eVTOL) aircraft operating in urban environments. The approach addresses the challenges of strong nonlinear dynamics, multi-axis coupling, and stringent safety constraints by separating the planning task from the fast-response control task. The MPC layer generates constrained velocity and yaw rate commands based on a simplified inertial prediction model, effectively reducing computational complexity while accounting for physical and operational limits. The EMFC layer then compensates for dynamic couplings and ensures the rapid execution of commands. A high-fidelity simulation model, incorporating rotor flapping dynamics, differential collective pitch control, and enhanced aerodynamic interference effects, is developed to validate the controller. Four representative ADS-33E-PRF tasks—Hover, Hovering Turn, Pirouette, and Vertical Maneuver—are simulated. Results demonstrate that the proposed controller achieves accurate trajectory tracking, stable flight performance, and full compliance with ADS-33E-PRF criteria, highlighting its potential for autonomous urban air mobility applications. Modern aircraft increasingly utilizes highly integrated electronic equipment, driving continuously increasing heat dissipation demands. Vapor compression refrigeration systems demonstrate stronger alignment with future aircraft thermal management trends, leveraging their superior volumetric cooling capacity, high energy efficiency, and independence from engine bleed air. This paper reviews global research progress on aircraft vapor compression refrigeration systems, covering performance optimization, dynamic characteristics, control strategies, fault detection, and international development histories and typical applications. Analysis identifies emerging challenges under large-temperature-range cooling requirements, with comparative assessment establishing zeotropic mixture auto-cascade vapor compression refrigeration systems as the optimal forward-looking solution. Finally, recognizing current research gaps, we propose future research directions for onboard auto-cascade vapor compression refrigeration systems: optimizing refrigerant mixtures for flight conditions, achieving efficient gas-liquid separation during variable overloads and attitude conditions, and developing model predictive control with intelligent optimization to ensure reliability. The design of aircraft electrical wiring interconnection systems (EWISs) is central to ensuring the safe and reliable operation of aircraft. The calculation of the temperature rise characteristics of aircraft wire harnesses is one of the key technologies in EWIS design, directly affecting the safety margin of the system. However, existing calculation methods generally face a bottleneck in the balance between speed and accuracy, failing to meet the requirements of actual engineering applications. In this paper, we conduct an in-depth study on this issue. Firstly, a finite element harness model is established to accurately obtain the convective heat transfer coefficients of wires and harnesses. Based on the analysis of the influencing factors of the thermal network model for a single wire, an improved thermal resistance hierarchical wire thermal network model is proposed. A structure consisting of series thermal resistance within layers and iterative parallel algorithms between layers is proposed to equivalently integrate and iteratively calculate the mutual thermal influence relationship between each layer of the harness, thereby constructing a hierarchical harness thermal network model. This model successfully achieves a significant improvement in calculation speed while effectively ensuring useable temperature rise results, providing an effective method for EWIS design. Three-dimensional (3D) radar imaging is essential for target detection and measurement of scattering characteristics. Cylindrical scanning, a prevalent spatial sampling technique, provides benefits in engineering applications and has been extensively utilized for assessing the radar stealth capabilities of large aircraft. Traditional cylindrical scanning generally utilizes highly sampled full-coverage techniques, leading to an excessive quantity of sampling points and diminished image efficiency, constraining its use for quick detection applications. This work presents an efficient 3D sampling strategy that integrates vertical linear scanning with horizontal rotating motion to overcome these restrictions. A joint angle–space sampling model is developed, and geometric constraints are implemented to enhance the scanning trajectory. The experimental results demonstrate that, compared to conventional techniques, the proposed method achieves a 94% reduction in the scanning duration while maintaining a peak sidelobe level ratio (PSLR) of 12 dB. Furthermore, this study demonstrates that 3D imaging may be accomplished solely by a “V”-shaped trajectory, efficiently determining the minimal possible sampling aperture. This approach offers novel insights and theoretical backing for the advancement of high-efficiency, low-redundancy 3D radar imaging systems. Full article

This paper aims to analyze the performance of a tilt-rotor fixed-wing RPAS (Remotely Piloted Aircraft System) using a segmented approach, focusing on a nominal mission for SAR (Search and Rescue) applications. The study employs optimization techniques tailored to each segment to meet power consumption requirements, and the results highlight the accuracy of the physical characterization, which incorporates nonlinear propulsive and aerodynamic models derived from wind tunnel test campaigns. Critical segments for this nominal mission, such as the vertical take off or the transition from vertical to horizontal flight regimes, are addressed to fully understand the performance response of the aircraft. The proposed framework integrates experimental models into trajectory optimization procedures for each segment, enabling a realistic and modular analysis of energy use and aerodynamic performance. This approach provides valuable insights for both flight control design and future sizing iterations of convertible UAVs (Uncrewed Aerial Vehicles). Full article

In particular, asymmetric states manifest as ‘tornado’ vortices with significant practical consequences on the design and operation. Both inward- and outward-facing leading-wedge doors, resulting in leading edge shocks directed into and away from the cavity, are examined at select opening angles ranging from 22.5° to 90° (fully open) at Mach 1.6. The computational approach utilizes the Reynolds-Averaged Navier–Stokes equations with a one-equation model and is augmented by experimental observations of cavity floor pressure and surface oil-flow patterns. For the no-doors configuration, the asymmetric results are consistent with a long-time series DDES simulation, previously validated with two experimental databases. When fully open, outer wedge doors (OWD) yield an asymmetric flow, while inner wedge doors (IWD) display only mildly asymmetric behavior. At lower door angles (partially closed cavity), both types of doors display a successive bifurcation of the shear layer, ultimately resulting in a symmetric flow. IWD tend to promote symmetry for all angles observed, with the shear layer experiencing a pitchfork bifurcation at the ‘critical angle’ (67.5°). This is also true for the OWD at the ‘critical angle’ (45°), though an entirely different symmetric flow field is established. The first observation of pitchfork bifurcations (‘critical angle’) for the IWD is at 67.5° and for the OWD, 45°, complementing experimental observations. The back wall signature of the bifurcated shear layer (impingement preference) was found to be indicative of the 3D cavity dynamics and may be used to establish a correspondence between 3D cavity dynamics and the shear layer. Below the critical angle, the symmetric flow field is comprised of counter-rotating vortex pairs at the front and back wall corners. The existence of a critical angle and the process of door opening versus closing indicate the possibility of hysteresis, a preliminary discussion of which is presented. Full article

Wireless sensor networks provide a solution for structural health monitoring of aviation pipelines. In the installation environment of aviation pipelines, widespread vibrations can be utilized to extract energy through vibration energy harvesting technology to achieve self-powering of sensors. This study analyzed the vibration characteristics of aviation pipeline structures. The vibration characteristics and influencing factors of typical aviation pipeline structures were obtained through simulations and experiments. An N-shaped symmetric vibration energy harvester was designed considering the limited space in aviation pipeline structures. To improve the efficiency of electrical energy extraction from the vibration energy harvester, expand its operating frequency band, and achieve efficient vibration energy harvesting, this study first analyzed its natural frequency characteristics through theoretical analysis. Finite element simulation software was then used to analyze the effects of the external excitation acceleration direction, mass and combination of counterweights, piezoelectric sheet length, and piezoelectric material placement on the output power of the energy harvester. The structural parameters of the vibration energy harvester were optimized, and the optimal working conditions were determined. The experimental results indicate that the N-shaped symmetric vibration energy harvester designed and optimized in this study improves the efficiency of vibration energy harvesting and can be arranged in the limited space of aviation pipeline structures. It achieves efficient energy harvesting under multi-modal conditions, different excitation directions, and a wide operating frequency band, thus meeting the practical application requirement and engineering feasibility of aircraft design. Inconsistency in the structural strengths of a membrane wing under positive and negative loads has undesirable impacts on the aeroelastic deflections of the wing, which results in more significant flight control system modeling errors and worsens the performance of the aircraft. In this paper, an integrated dynamic model is derived for a membrane-wing aircraft based on the structural dynamics equation of the membrane wing and the flight dynamics equation of the traditional fixed wing. Based on state feedback control theory, an autopilot system is designed to unify the flight and control properties of different flight and wing deformation statuses. The system uses models of different operating regions to estimate the dynamic response of the vehicle and compares the estimation results with the sensor signals. Based on the compared results, the autopilot can identify the overall flight and select the correct operating region for the control system. By switching to the operating region with the minimum modeling error, the autopilot system maintains good flight performance while flying in turbulence. According to the simulation results, compared with traditional rigid aircraft autopilots, the proposed autopilot can reduce the absolute maximum attack angles by nearly 27% and the absolute maximum wingtip twist angles by nearly 25% under gust conditions. This enhanced robustness and stability performance demonstrates the autopilot’s significant potential for practical deployment in micro-aerial vehicles, particularly in applications demanding reliable operation under turbulent conditions, such as military surveillance, environmental monitoring, precision agriculture, or infrastructure inspection.
