Erosion represents a significant global threat to coastal zones, especially beaches, which are among the most valuable coastal landforms. This study evaluates the vulnerability to coastal erosion along the Brazilian Amazon coast, focusing on eight recreational beaches. The research is based on an assessment of geological, physical, ecological, and anthropogenic indicators. Some of these indicators were proposed in this study to enhance the evaluation of vulnerability in Amazonian beaches. The analysis reveals that most of the beaches studied are highly vulnerable to erosion due to a combination of natural factors and human activities. The barrier–beach ridge, composed of unconsolidated sediments, exhibits the highest vulnerability, while low cliffs present a moderate level of risk. The study highlights that semi-urban beaches with significant infrastructure development are particularly susceptible to erosion, a problem exacerbated by unplanned land use. Conversely, rural beaches, especially those located in protected areas, show lower vulnerability due to reduced human impact and better conservation of natural ecosystems. Furthermore, the study underscores the effects of extreme climatic events, such as prolonged rainfall and high-energy waves, which can intensify erosion risks. The findings suggest that anthropogenic changes, combined with extreme climate events, significantly influence the dynamics of coastal erosion. This research emphasizes the importance of targeted management strategies that address both natural and human-induced vulnerabilities, aiming to enhance coastal resilience and sustainability for Amazonian beaches. The demand for maritime–coastal tourism has been intensifying, but its offerings are sometimes limited to a few activities. Some of these activities do not require specific skills or certifications, while others do. This study aimed to investigate what type of activities are carried out by tourism and recreational vessels in the coastal area of the central Algarve (Portugal). To this end, data from the automatic identification system (AIS) of recreational vessels was used to monitor and categorise these activities in a non-intrusive manner. A model (TORMA) was defined to facilitate the analysis of AIS data and relate them to five independent variables (distance from the coast, boat speed, bathymetry, seabed type, and number of pings). The results of the analysis of more than 11 thousand hourly AIS records for passenger, sailing, and charter vessels showed that the 14 most regular ones had strong seasonal patterns, greater intensity in summer, and spatial patterns with more records near some coastal cliffs. This study provides valuable information on the management of motorised nautical activities near the coast and at sea, contributing to more informed and effective tourism regulation and planning. The geoheritage present on the “Tindari Cape and Marinello Lakes” site (TCML, Messina Province, NE Sicily, Italy) drew our attention due to the acquired contrasting information. Indeed, the TCML geoheritage was classified in the geosite national catalogue as a geosite (albeit under a non-evaluated status and with regional scientific interest), whereas it was classified in the geosite regional catalogue as a site of attention. The coastal geoheritage included in this site was analyzed by means of a literature review, field work, and a sedimentological and petrographic investigation. Moreover, the reconstruction of the historical to modern evolution of the lagoon and spit’s shapes was carried out across a time span of 85 years. The investigation results were used for the inventorying and quantitative assessment of the TCML geoheritage with the Brilha method. The primary and preeminent scientific interest was geomorphological, the lagoon and spit being an active geomorphosite. This system showed elements of rarity, representativeness, and exemplariness. Secondary-type geomorphological, structural, and palaeontological aspects were also evidenced in geological elements found on the cliffs of the Tindari Cape. For the quantitative assessment of the geodiversity, the scientific value (SV), potential educational use (PEU), potential touristic use (PTU), and degradation risk (DR) were evaluated. The obtained weighted scores were 320 (SV), 250 (PEU), 290 (PTU), and 285 (DR). The high SV suggested that the TCML, due to its geodiversity, could be classified as a geosite. Notwithstanding, the moderate PEU, PTU, and DR (fragility and vulnerability depending on natural climate and anthropogenic factors) values indicated that it was not fully compatible with educational and touristic purposes. The results of the inventorying and quantitative assessment of the TCML site provide scientific data that are useful in establishing the TCML as a global geosite, placing it in the national catalog of geosites. The Muong La–Bac Yen–Cho Bo fault is one of the seismic faults in the northwest region of Vietnam. Neo-tectonic activities and exogenous processes have influenced the drainage system and topographic–geomorphologic features on both walls of the fault. The results of topographic analysis and geomorphological indices have confirmed the active tectonics of the fault during the Neo-tectonic period (Pliocene–Quaternary, about 5 million years). The valley floor width-to-height ratio (Vf) of less than 0.5 indicates the “rejuvenation” of the streams and the obvious influence of tectonic activities on the two walls of the studied fault. The Hypsometric curve (HC) in the study area has a straight–convex shape and the basins on the northeast wall have hypsometric integral index values ranging from 0.46 to 0.481, which are lower and more convex than those of the southwest wall. The Mountain-front sinuosity index (Smf) from 1.92 to 3.28 along the foot slope of the Hoang Lien Son range (the segment from Than Uyen to Bac Yen and Phu Yen) and the highly variable stream-length gradient index (SL) value on the northeast wall signify the relative tectonic uplift on the northeast wall of the fault. The deformed geomorphological indications (steep cliffs, slip surfaces, etc.) in the field confirm the active tectonics of the Muong La–Bac Yen–Cho Bo fault during the Neo-tectonic period. Background/Objectives: Hair loss affects self-esteem, confidence, and psychological well-being. Exosomes, as molecular carriers of growth factors and active compounds, offer a promising treatment. This study evaluates the efficacy of an exosome formulation containing extracts from two known hair-regenerating plants, Ecklonia cava and Thuja orientalis (ECPE), for male pattern alopecia. Methods: A randomized controlled trial included 20 male participants with Norwood grade 2–3 androgenetic alopecia who were randomly assigned into two groups, placebo (0.9% sodium chloride) and ECPE, administered bi-weekly across four sessions. Evaluations included hair density measurements, adverse effect tracking, and self-assessments. Results: Most participants (55%) were aged 18 to 35, with 75% reporting hair loss for over a year and 80% noting scalp thinning. The hair counts showed no significant change in the placebo group from baseline to week 16 (Wilcoxon signed-rank test: V = 13.5, p = 0.163), while a significant increase was observed in the ECPE group (V = 0, p = 0.002). Between-group analysis revealed a significant difference in the hair count changes (Wilcoxon rank-sum test: W = 86.5, p = 0.006) with a large effect size (Cliff’s Delta: & = 0.73, 95% CI: 0.41–0.89), with the ECPE group showing higher median hair growth (9.5, IQR = 16.88) compared to the placebo group (1.5, IQR = 3.00). A Bayesian ANCOVA, adjusted for covariates (the father’s scalp hair condition, baseline hair count, and Norwood classification), showed no significant effect of these factors on the outcomes. Conclusions: These findings suggest that ECPE significantly improves hair regrowth compared to the placebo, with no notable adverse effects. Full article

Maternal immune activation (MIA)—infection with an immunogen during pregnancy—is linked to an increased risk of neurodevelopmental disorders (NDDs) in offspring. Both MIA and NDDs are associated with developmental delays in offsprings’ motor behavior. Therefore, the current study examined the effects of MIA on neonatal reflex development in male and female offspring. Sprague Dawley rats were administered lipopolysaccharide (LPS; 50 μg/mL/kg, i.p.) or saline on embryonic day (E)15 of gestation. The offspring were then tested daily from postnatal day (P)3–P21 to determine their neonatal reflex abilities. The maternal care behaviors of the dam were also quantified on P1–P5, P10, and P15. We found that, regardless of sex, the E15 LPS offspring were able to forelimb grasp, cliff avoid, and right with a correct posture at an earlier postnatal age than the E15 saline offspring did. The E15 LPS offspring also showed better performance of forelimb grasping, hindlimb grasping, righting with correct posture, and walking with correct posture than the E15 saline offspring did. There were no significant differences in maternal licking/grooming, arched-back nursing, non-arched-back nursing, or total nursing across the E15 groups. Overall, these findings suggest that MIA with LPS on E15 accelerates reflex development in offspring without affecting maternal care. This may be explained by the stress acceleration hypothesis, whereby early-life stress accelerates development to promote survival. Full article

We conducted a helicopter survey in 2010 for cliff-nesting raptors along the Dalton Highway in northern Alaska. The study area extended from the Yukon River northward ~395 km through the Brooks Range to the Arctic Plain. We documented 55 occupied raptor nesting territories, including 25 Golden Eagle (Aquila chrysaetos), 11 Gyrfalcon (Falco rusticolus), and 10 Peregrine Falcon (Falco peregrinus) territories. We also recorded vacant stick nests and raptor perch sites on cliffs. We identified more occupied eagle territories and hundreds more vacant eagle stick nests than were previously known in the study area. The average number of Golden Eagle nestlings/nesting pairs at the time of the survey was 1.5 ± 0.6. The most productive Golden Eagle pairs were located in the northern part of the study area. The number of occupied eagle territories in 2010 is far fewer than the number of eagle stick nests we recorded. Our data indicate that the distribution of nesting eagles in the 2010 study area is different than in the past. Whether this reflects changes in eagle density; a response to availability of prey, climate change, human activities, or a combination of these; or some other factor warrants further investigation. Intensive surveys along the Dalton Highway in the 1970s found no occupied nests for Peregrine Falcons or Gyrfalcons but we found 10 and 11, respectively. Therefore, the Peregrine Falcon and Gyrfalcon nests we recorded in 2010 reflect an increase in the number of known nesting pairs there. Full article

Overcrowding in national parks and protected areas can cause irreversible damage to the environment, compromising the quality of soil, water, wildlife, and vegetation. Thus, it is critical for park managers to have detailed information on visitor activities and spatial dynamics in order to prioritise actions capable of mitigating undesirable impacts in the most frequently visited areas. In this article, we use georeferenced trails and photographs from the Wikiloc and Flickr web platforms to determine the spatial visitation patterns in the Atlantic Islands of Galicia National Park (AINP) from 2008 to 2023. Maps showing trail usage intensity and the distribution of photographs according to land use allowed us to identify the most frequented land uses by visitors and the areas of highest tourist pressure within the AINP. The results show that distribution patterns vary between platforms. Shrubland (37%) and marine cliffs (27%) were the most photographed land uses by visitors, while artificial areas (14%) were the most frequented by Wikiloc users. Cíes island emerges as the most popular tourist destination, as evidenced by the greater number of trails and photographs compared to Ons, Sálvora, and Cortegada. This study shows how social media data, specifically trails and geotagged photographs from Wikiloc and Flickr, can support and complement the monitoring of visitor use and impact in protected areas. The Lake Faro brackish basin (Sicily, Italy) was established as a Global Geosite as a key locality of tectonic coastal lakes, but little research has been devoted to this rare geological and ecological framework. To fill this gap, the main stratigraphical, sedimentological, ecological, morpho-bathymetric, and structural features were reported, linking geodiversity with biodiversity. In Lake Faro, a shallow platform develops alongside a deep funnel-shaped basin, reaching a maximum depth of 29 m. A NNW-SSE trending steep cliff, representing the abrupt transition from the platform to the basin, was interpreted as a dextral transtensional fault (Lake Faro Fault), presumably active since the middle-late(?) Pleistocene. The switches of the steep cliff NW-wards, acquiring an E-W trend, was interpreted as being due to the occurrence of the normal Mortelle Fault, cut by the Faro Lake Fault. Bottom terrigenous deposits consisted of coarse- to fine-grained quartzo-lithic rich sediments deriving from high-grade metamorphic and igneous rocks, whereas bioclasts mainly derived from clam farming actives for several centuries up until today. The Quaternary shallow platform, from top to base, includes the following: (i) soft cover composed of coarse terrigenous and prevalent bioclastic deposits; (ii) hard conglomerates cemented by carbonates; and (iii) siliciclastic coarse deposits of the Messina Fm. In the deep basin, siliciclastic silty loams with minor amounts of bioclastic deposits prevailed in the soft cover. Substrate heterogeneity coupled with brackish-marine gradients are the main factors responsible for an articulate patchiness of different lagoon habitats and related benthic associations, which, according to the Barcelona Convention classification, can be summarized as follows: (i) MB1.541 (marine angiosperms or other halophytes), (ii) MB1.542 (Fucales), (iii) MB5.543 (photophilic algae, except Fucales), (iv) MB5.544 (Facies with Polychaeta), and (v) MB5.545 (Facies with Bivalvia). Typical marine associations, such as rhodolite beds, also occur. Finally, the lake, which has been exploited since the prehistoric age because of its high biodiversity and productivity, maintains some evidence of millennial relationships with the resident human cultures, attracted there by the favorable geomorphological and ecological peculiarities. Reactive postural control (RPC), essential for maintaining balance during daily activities, relies on a complex sensory system integrating visual, vestibular, and proprioceptive inputs. Deficits in RPC can lead to falls, especially in unpredictable environments where sensory inputs are challenged. Traditional rehabilitation often fails to prepare patients adequately for real-world conditions. This study aims to explore the effects of varying instability levels (ILs) and sensory integration strategies (SIS) on RPC by evaluating balance disturbances without applying additional external force. Twenty-five healthy participants (12 men, 13 women, 24.5 ± 6.1 years) performed balance tasks on Abili® platforms with adjustable ILs (0, 1, 2, 3) while altering sensory strategies (Basic, Visual, Proprioception, Vestibular) using the Modified Clinical Test of Sensory Integration and Balance (mCTSIB). RPC efficiency was measured using the 95th percentile confidence interval for chest movement’s ellipsoid volume and average velocity, analyzed with Wilcoxon signed-rank tests and Cliff’s delta effect size. Results showed significant increases in chest movement velocity and volume, particularly with the Vestibular strategy at higher ILs, with a 7176% increase in chest volume from Basic strategy at 0IL to Vestibular strategy at 3IL. Additionally, removing visual input (Visual and Vestibular strategies) had a greater impact on chest movement than increasing instability levels. These findings underscore the significant role of combined platform instability and reduced sensory input on postural control. This study presents a novel method for challenging balance and suggests that sensory integration with variable instability could be valuable in training and rehabilitation, even for healthy individuals. Recent studies have discovered that aryl-substituted pyrido[2,1-a]isoquinolines have the potential to be highly active DPP IV inhibitors. In previous studies, we reported a novel synthetic approach for the construction of their sulfur-containing bioisosteric [1,4]thiazino[3,4-a]isoquinolines analogues, incorporating an additional aryl substituent. The present study aims to investigate the DPP IV inhibitory activity and cytotoxicity of the synthesized molecules by in vitro assay. The geometry optimization and molecular docking of the synthesized compounds were used to determine their binding modes to the active site of DPP IV. The docking analysis revealed that the energy-minimized poses of the studied compounds are close to the most important selectivity cliffs for DPP IV inhibition, forming hydrogen bonds and hydrophobic interactions with them. These results can be considered as a preliminary step towards further structural activity modifications. Full article

The peculiarity of the case study is the fact that the village is simultaneously affected by two different types of slope instabilities. The southwest sector, representing the historical part of the village, has been affected by large rockfalls generated from the “Capo le Vene” cliff located in the south of the village. The northeastern sector of the village represents the most recent urbanized area and is involved in a deep-seated landslide that, in the last decades, has damaged buildings and infrastructure. In this context, we have used two different types of remote sensing techniques to study the two phenomena. The rockfall area has been surveyed through the use of an Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) that allowed the definition of main joint sets and the volume of blocks associated with the most recent (2011) rockfall event. Three main joint sets have been highlighted, which are responsible for the failure of the “Capo le Vene” cliff. The volume of blocks that failed during the last rock failure in 2011 ranged from a few to 1500 m3. The deep-seated landslide has been studied by analyzing borehole data and 20 years of InSAR data from ERS1/2, ENVISAT, COSMO-SkyMed, and SENTINEL-1. It has been highlighted by InSAR analysis that the northeast sector of the village shows a perfectly linear displacement trend that generates movements up to about 230 mm (about 1 cm/year). Soil erosion in coastal areas, driven by global change and human activity, poses a significant threat to ecological and economic stability. This research investigates water erosion in the southeast of the Ría de Arosa (Pontevedra, Spain), utilizing the Revised Universal Soil Loss Equation model and Geographic Information System technologies. Key factors analyzed include rainfall erosivity, soil erodibility, topography, land cover, and conservation practices. High-resolution maps (1 × 1 m pixels) identified areas at high risk of erosion. Vulnerable zones, such as coastal cliffs and vineyards, show severe erosion rates exceeding 50 t/ha/year (>5 mm/year), with the most extreme zones reaching up to 200 t/ha/year (>200 mm/year). These results emphasize that intervention could be required or recommended. Suggested measures include reforestation, effective agricultural land management, or the implementation of vegetative barriers to reduce erosion. These areas, characterized by steep slopes and sparse vegetation, are particularly susceptible to soil loss, necessitating specific conservation efforts. The results underscore the need for sustainable coastal management practices and preventive strategies to protect this vulnerable coastal zone. Implementing these measures is crucial to mitigating the impacts of soil erosion, preserving natural resources, and ensuring long-term ecological and economic resilience in the region. Full article

Modafinil analogs with either a sulfoxide or sulfide moiety have improved binding affinities at the human dopamine transporter (hDAT) compared to modafinil, with lead sulfoxide-substituted analogs showing characteristics of atypical inhibition (e.g., JJC8-091). Interestingly, the only distinction between sulfoxide and sulfide substitution is the presence of one additional oxygen atom. To elucidate why such a subtle difference in ligand structure can result in different typical or atypical profiles, we investigated two pairs of analogs. Our quantum mechanical calculations revealed a more negatively charged distribution of the electrostatic potential surface of the sulfoxide substitution. Using molecular dynamics simulations, we demonstrated that sulfoxide-substituted modafinil analogs have a propensity to attract more water into the binding pocket. They also exhibited a tendency to dissociate from Asp79 and form a new interaction with Asp421, consequently promoting an inward-facing conformation of hDAT. In contrast, sulfide-substituted analogs did not display these effects. These findings elucidate the structural basis of the activity cliff observed with modafinil analogs and also enhance our understanding of the functionally relevant conformational spectrum of hDAT. The strength of inhibitory neurotransmission depends on intracellular neuronal chloride concentration, primarily regulated by the activity of cation–chloride cotransporters NKCC1 (Sodium–Potassium–Chloride Cotransporter 1) and KCC2 (Potassium–Chloride Cotransporter 2). Brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) influences the functioning of these co-transporters. BDNF is synthesized from precursor proteins (proBDNF), which undergo proteolytic cleavage to yield mature BDNF (mBDNF). While previous studies have indicated the involvement of BDNF signaling in the activity of KCC2, its specific mechanisms are unclear. We investigated the interplay between both forms of BDNF and chloride homeostasis in rat hippocampal neurons and in utero electroporated cortices of rat pups, spanning the behavioral, cellular, and molecular levels. We found that both pro- and mBDNF play a comparable role in immature neurons by inhibiting the capacity of neurons to extrude chloride. Additionally, proBDNF increases the endocytosis of KCC2 while maintaining a depolarizing shift of EGABA in maturing neurons. Behaviorally, proBDNF-electroporated rat pups in the somatosensory cortex exhibit sensory deficits, delayed huddling, and cliff avoidance. These findings emphasize the role of BDNF signaling in regulating chloride transport through the modulation of KCC2. In summary, this study provides valuable insights into the intricate interplay between BDNF, chloride homeostasis, and inhibitory synaptic transmission, shedding light on the underlying cellular mechanisms involved.
