The search for innovative solutions in the field of construction materials used in aircraft manufacturing has led to the development of composite materials, particularly CFRP polymer composites. Composite airframe components, which are required to have high strength, are joined using mechanical fasteners. Considering that the composite consists of a polymer matrix, which is a material susceptible to rheological phenomena occurring rapidly at elevated temperature, there is a high probability of significant changes in the strength and performance properties. Coupled thermal and mechanical loads on composite material joints occur in everyday aircraft operation. Experimental tests were conducted using a quasi-isotropic CFRP on an epoxy resin matrix with aerospace certification. The assessment of changes in the strength parameters of the material itself showed a decrease of approx. 40% in its short-term strength at 80 °C compared to the ambient temperature and a decrease in the load-bearing capacity of single-lap bolted joints of over 25%. Even more rapid changes were observed when assessing the fatigue life of the joints assessed at ambient and elevated temperature. In addition, the actual glass transition temperature of the resin was determined using the DSC technique. Analysis of the damage mechanisms showed that at 80 °C, the main degradation mechanisms of the material are accelerated creep processes of the CFRP and softening of the matrix, increasing its susceptibility to damage in the joint area. This work examines resistance drift in FPGA I/O paths subjected to combined electrical and thermal stress, using a Xilinx Spartan-6 device as a representative platform. A multiplexed measurement approach was employed, in which multiple I/O pins were externally shorted and sequentially activated, enabling precise tracking of voltage, current, and effective series resistance over time, under controlled bias conditions. Two accelerated stress modes were investigated: high-temperature dwell in the range of 80–120 °C and thermal cycling between 80 and 140 °C. Both stress modes exhibited similar sub-linear (power-law) time dependence on resistance change, indicating cumulative degradation behavior. However, Arrhenius analysis revealed a strong contrast in effective activation energy: approximately 0.62 eV for high-temperature dwell and approximately 1.3 eV for thermal cycling. This divergence indicates that distinct physical mechanisms dominate under each stress regime. The lower activation energy is consistent with electrically and thermally driven on-die degradation within the FPGA I/O macro, including bias-related aging of output drivers and pad-level structures. In contrast, the higher activation energy observed under thermal cycling is characteristic of diffusion- and creep-dominated thermo-mechanical damage in package-level interconnects, such as solder joints. These findings demonstrate that resistance-based monitoring of FPGA I/O paths can discriminate between device-dominated and package-dominated aging mechanisms, providing a practical foundation for reliability assessment and self-monitoring methodologies in complex electronic systems. Considering the complexity and diversity of water-rich soft soil strata, indoor triaxial shear tests and creep tests were conducted on soft soil to explore its deformation law and creep characteristics. To address the nonlinear characteristics of soft soil creep, a nonlinear pot element was proposed and substituted for the two linear pot elements in the Burgers model, thus establishing an unsteady parametric Burgers model. The one-dimensional creep equation of the unsteady Burgers model was derived, theoretically determining that the unsteady model can describe three stages of creep. Based on this, the creep equation of the unsteady Burgers model was extended to a three-dimensional stress state, and the triaxial compression creep test curves of Ningbo soft soil were fitted and parameters identified. The above model was derived from a three-dimensional finite difference scheme suitable for numerical solution in FLAC3D. A custom constitutive creep model was developed in FLAC3D, and the non-accelerated creep stage and accelerated creep stage of the improved model were analyzed to verify the accuracy and reliability of the constitutive model. The results show that the numerical simulation results and the indoor creep test results are in good agreement in terms of strain increment and the creep change curve, which confirms the effectiveness and applicability of the proposed unsteady Burgers creep constitutive model and its secondary development application. The long-term stability of deep underground excavations near aquifer-bearing strata is primarily controlled by the time-dependent deformation and permeability changes in the surrounding rock mass under the combined effects of mechanical loading and groundwater seepage. This study experimentally investigates the creep behavior and permeability evolution of tuff specimens subjected to stepwise reductions in confining pressure under coupled seepage and stress conditions. Conventional triaxial compression tests were conducted to determine the peak strength at confining pressures of 10, 15, and 20 MPa. Subsequently, triaxial creep tests were performed, maintaining axial stress at 70% of the previously established peak strength, with a constant seepage pressure of 4 MPa, while progressively decreasing the confining pressure. The results clearly reveal a three-stage creep process—with instantaneous, steady-state, and accelerated phases—with the radial strain exceeding axial strain and ultimately dominating at failure. This indicates that failure is characterized by significant volumetric expansion. At the specified initial confining pressures of 10 MPa, 15 MPa, and 20 MPa, the tuff specimens exhibited volumetric strains of −1.332, −1.119, and −0.836 at failure, respectively. Permeability evolution depends on the creep stage, showing a pronounced increase during the accelerated creep phase that often surpasses the cumulative permeability changes observed earlier. The specimen’s permeability at failure increased by factors of 3.97, 3.21, and 3.61 compared to the initial stage of the experiment, respectively. Additionally, permeability evolution exhibits a strong functional relationship with volumetric strain, which can be effectively modeled using an exponential function. The experimental findings further indicate that, as the confining pressure is gradually reduced, the permeability evolves following a clear exponential trend. Additionally, a higher initial confining pressure slows the rate at which permeability increases. These findings clarify the three-stage creep behavior and the associated evolution of the permeability index in tuff under coupled seepage–stress conditions. Additionally, they present a quantitative model linking permeability to volumetric strain, offering both a theoretical foundation and a new approach for assessing the long-term stability risks of deep underground engineering projects. This review examines scientific and engineering strategies for adapting bituminous and asphalt concrete materials to the highly diverse climates of Central Asia. The region’s sharp gradients—from arid lowlands to cold mountainous zones—expose pavements to thermal fatigue, photo-oxidative aging, freeze–thaw cycles, and wind abrasion. Existing climatic classifications and principles for designing thermally and radiatively resilient pavements are summarized. Special emphasis is placed on linking binder morphology, rheology, and climate-induced transformations in composite bituminous systems. Advanced characterization methods—including dynamic shear rheometry (DSR), multiple stress creep recovery (MSCR), bending beam rheometry (BBR), and linear amplitude sweep (LAS), supported by FTIR, SEM, and AFM—enable quantitative correlations between phase composition, oxidative chemistry, and mechanical performance. The influence of polymeric, nanostructured, and biopolymeric modifiers on stability and durability is critically assessed. The review promotes region-specific material design and the use of integrated accelerated aging protocols (RTFOT, PAV, UV, freeze–thaw) that replicate local climatic stresses. A climatic rheological profile is proposed as a unified framework combining climate mapping with microstructural and rheological data to guide the development of sustainable and durable pavements for Central Asia. Key rheological indicators—complex modulus (G*), non-recoverable creep compliance (Jnr), and the BBR m-value—are incorporated into this profile. Full article

In cold regions, flexible pavements are vulnerable to frost-induced damage, necessitating effective insulation strategies. Foam glass aggregate (FGA) insulation layers, made from recycled glass, offer promising thermal insulation properties but are mechanically fragile and susceptible to permanent deformation under repeated loading. Manufacturers provide technical recommendations, particularly regarding load limits for installation and the dimensions of the thermal protection layer. These are considered insufficient to assist pavement designers in their work. The definition of critical criteria for permissible loads was deemed necessary to design mechanically durable structures using this alternative technology. This study investigates the critical stress conditions that FGA layers can tolerate within flexible pavement systems to ensure long-term structural integrity. Laboratory cyclic triaxial tests and full-scale accelerated pavement testing using a heavy vehicle simulator were conducted to evaluate the resilient modulus and permanent deformation behavior of FGA. The results show that FGA exhibits stress-dependent elastoplastic behavior, with resilient modulus values ranging from 70 to 200 MPa. Most samples exhibited plastic creep or incremental collapse behavior, underscoring the importance of careful stress management. A strain-hardening model was calibrated using both laboratory and full-scale data, incorporating a reliability level of 95%. This study identifies critical deviatoric stress thresholds (15–25 kPa) to maintain stable deformation behavior (Range A) under realistic confining pressures. FGA performs well as a lightweight, insulating, and draining layer, but design criteria remain to be defined for the design of multi-layer road structures adapted to local materials and traffic conditions. Establishing allowable critical stress levels would help designers mechanically validate the geometry, particularly the adequacy of the overlying layers. These findings support the development of mechanistic design criteria for FGA insulation layers, ensuring their durability and optimal performance in cold climate pavements. Full article

Excavation unloading in deep rock masses involves a transition from symmetric states of energy storage to asymmetric energy dissipation, in which variations in intermediate principal stress (σ2) play a critical role. To investigate these symmetry-breaking mechanisms, controlled-rate true triaxial unloading experiments were performed on sandstone using a miniature creep-coupled testing system. During unloading of σ3 at 0.1–0.3 MPa/s, the evolution of elastic, dissipated, and plastic energies was quantitatively evaluated. The results reveal pronounced asymmetric energy responses governed by both σ2 and the unloading rate. Dissipated energy dominates the entire unloading process, while elastic energy exhibits a non-monotonic trend with increasing σ2—first rising due to enhanced confinement and then decreasing as premature failure occurs. Higher unloading rates significantly accelerate total, elastic, and dissipated energy conversion and intensify post-peak brittleness. A new metric, plastically released energy, is proposed to quantify the asymmetric energy release from peak to residual state after failure. Its dependence on σ2 is strongly non-monotonic, increasing under moderate σ2 but decreasing when σ2 is sufficiently high to trigger failure during unloading. This behavior captures the essential symmetry-breaking transition between elastic energy accumulation and irreversible plastic dissipation. These findings demonstrate that true triaxial unloading induces energy evolution patterns far from symmetry, controlled jointly by σ2 and unloading kinetics. The established correlations between σ2, unloading rate, and plastically released energy enrich the theoretical framework of energy-based symmetry in rock mechanics and offer insights for evaluating excavation-induced instability in deep underground engineering. This study has developed a novel measurement-based computational method that accurately determines the vertical and lateral wheel–rail contact forces transmitted from railway vehicles to the rails. A major contribution—and the first in the literature—is the analytical distribution of the total lateral wheelset force into its outer-wheel and inner-wheel components, thereby enabling precise individual evaluation of derailment risk on each wheel in curved tracks. Analytical equations derived from Newton’s second law were first formulated to express both vertical forces and total axle lateral force directly from bogie/axle-box accelerations and suspension reactions. To eliminate the deviations caused by conventional simplifying assumptions (neglect of creep effects, wheel diameter variation, and constant contact geometry), surrogate functions and distribution equations sensitive to curve radius, vehicle speed, and cant deficiency were introduced for the first time and seamlessly integrated into the equations. Validation was performed using the Istanbul Tramway multibody model in SIMPACK 2024x.2, with the equations implemented in MATLAB/Simulink R2024b. Excellent agreement with SIMPACK reference results was achieved on straight tracks and curves, after regression-based calibration of the surrogate functions. Although the method requires an initial regression calibration within a simulation environment, it relies exclusively on measurable parameters, ensuring low cost, full compatibility with existing vehicle sensors, and genuine suitability for real-time monitoring. Consequently, it supports predictive maintenance and proactive safety management while overcoming the practical limitations of instrumented wheelsets and offering a robust, fleet-scalable alternative for the railway industry. Underground pumped hydro storage (UPHS) in solution-mined salt caverns offers a promising approach to address the intermittency of renewable energy in flat geological regions such as Southern Ontario, Canada. This work presents the first fully coupled thermo-hydro-mechanical (THM) numerical model of a two-cavern UPHS system in Southern Ontario, providing a foundational assessment of long-term cavern stability and brine leakage behavior under cyclic operation. The model captures the key interactions among deformation, leakage, and temperature effects governing cavern stability, evaluating cyclic brine injection–withdrawal at operating temperatures of 10 °C, 15 °C, and 20 °C over a five-year period. Results show that plastic deformation is constrained to localized zones at cavern–shale interfaces, with negligible risk of tensile failure. Creep deformation accelerates with temperature, yielding maximum strains of 2.6–3.2% and cumulative cavern closure of 1.8–2.6%, all within engineering safety thresholds. Leakage predominantly migrates through limestone interlayers, while shale contributes only local discharge pathways. Elevated temperature enhances leakage due to reduced brine viscosity, but cumulative volumes remain very low, confirming the sealing capacity of bedded salt. Overall, lower operating temperatures minimize both convergence and leakage, ensuring greater stability margins, indicating that UPHS operation should preferentially adopt lower brine temperatures to balance storage efficiency with long-term cavern stability. These findings highlight the feasibility of UPHS in Ontario’s salt formations and provide design guidance for balancing storage performance with geomechanical safety. Full article

In this article, an ecological composite based on a neat polylactide with 50 and 75% degrees of coffee particles and eggshells as an infill and organic filler, was developed. It has been shown that the content of fillers used reduced the mechanical properties, increasing the possibility of environmental degradation and accelerating the biodegradation process. During the additive production of polylactide with 10% of coffee grounds as a filler, it was possible to reduce the additive manufacturing temperature, which reduced the process time, energy costs, carbon dioxide emissions and the amount of polymer that may affect the environment. The structure of polylactide enriched with hen eggshells is characterized by roan and irregular shapes, which can cause a high tendency to form a concentration of cracks in these areas. Based on the results obtained from the stress relaxation test, the Zener model was used to describe a creep model of the produced ecological composites. The polymer composition of coffee grounds and eggshells shows a tendency to creep faster than pure polylactide and with different degrees of infill. Voids reduce the strength of composite materials, which increases the creep potential of samples with incomplete degrees of infill. Full article

Existing models seldom capture both strength degradation and creep behavior under prolonged saturation. This study develops a coupled hydro-mechanical creep model that integrates saturation-dependent elastic modulus reduction, cohesion decay with pore pressure, and a nonlinear creep law modified by a Heaviside function. Simulation of rock deformation during water infiltration reveals that water–creep coupling increases steady-state deformation by over 50% compared to strength degradation alone. A case study of a high arch dam reservoir slope demonstrates that models incorporating both water-weakening and creep effects predict significantly larger deformations than those ignoring these mechanisms. The model provides a practical tool for predicting long-term deformation in reservoir slopes under water–rock interaction. Full article

This study investigates the creep behavior of Wenzhou marine soft soil through 1D and triaxial creep tests, revealing that the secondary consolidation coefficient initially increases then stabilizes with stress level, decreases with OCR, increases with time, and reduces with depth. The e-lgt curves show four-phase deformation (instantaneous, primary consolidation, secondary compression, and accelerated creep), while triaxial tests identify three creep stages (decelerated, steady, and accelerated), with higher confining pressure increasing the deviatoric stress threshold for accelerated creep. Nonlinear stress–strain isochrones shift toward the strain axis with increasing confining pressure. The proposed structural parameter inversely correlates with the secondary consolidation coefficient, demonstrating that enhanced interparticle cementation and soil structure improve long-term creep resistance in coastal soft soil foundations. Deep coal rocks exhibit strong time-dependent behavior, including significant plastic deformation and large tunnel displacements, which complicate tunnel support in deep underground engineering. A fractional creep model considering strong time-dependence was developed based on the classical Nishihara framework to capture this behavior. Additional time-dependent strains induced by stress-state variations were considered, with long-term rock strength adopted as the damage stress threshold. The stress difference between nominal and post-damage stress, σD(t), defined as the stress gradient, was applied to a viscoelastic–plastic body containing a fractional Abel dashpot, producing conventional creep strain and strong time-dependent strain. The model was extended from one-dimensional to three-dimensional under triaxial stress conditions. The validity of the model was verified using triaxial creep test data for argillaceous sandstone and coal in deep roadways, and the model parameters were determined. The results demonstrate that the model accurately reproduces the full creep process, particularly the nonlinear accelerated stage influenced by strong time-dependence. Through stress-gradient-induced variations in strong time-dependent strain, the proposed creep model elucidates the progression of deformation in the strong time-dependent stage, offering a theoretical framework for the quantitative assessment of deep rock’s strong time-dependence. Sensitivity analysis identified the stress level, fractional order, and strong time-dependence coefficient α as key factors affecting strong time-dependent creep behavior. These findings indicate that tunnel support structures in deep environments are prone to instability, underscoring the necessity of accounting for strong time-dependence to ensure long-term stability. A quasi-static FEM framework for wheel–rail contact is presented, aimed at large parametric analyses including independently rotating wheel (IRW) configurations. Unlike half-space formulations such as CONTACT, the FEM approach resolves global deformations and strongly non-Hertzian geometries while remaining computationally tractable through three key features: (i) a tailored mesh transition around the contact patch, (ii) solver settings optimized for frictional contact convergence, and (iii) an integrated post-processing pipeline for creep forces, micro-slip, and wear. The model is verified against CONTACT, an established surface-discretization reference based on the Boundary Element Method (BEM), demonstrating close agreement in contact pressure, shear stress, and stick–slip patterns across the Manchester Contact Benchmark cases. Accuracy is quantified using error metrics (MAE, RMSE), with discrepancies analyzed in high-yaw, near-flange conditions. Compared with prior FEM-based contact models, the main contributions are: (i) a rigid–flexible domain partition, which reduces 3D computational cost without compromising local contact accuracy; (ii) a frictionless preconditioning step followed by friction restoration, eliminating artificial shear-induced deformation at first contact and accelerating convergence; (iii) an automated selection of the elastic slip tolerance (slto) based on frictional-energy consistency, ensuring numerical robustness; and (iv) an IRW-oriented parametrization of toe angle, camber, and wheel spacing. The proposed framework provides a robust basis for large-scale studies and can be extended to transient or elastoplastic analyses relevant to dynamic loading, curved tracks, and wheel defects. This study investigates the creep behavior of remolded Wenzhou (China) coastal silt through one-dimensional (1D) and triaxial creep tests. Results show that the secondary consolidation coefficient exhibits a non-monotonic response to stress levels, while it decreases with increasing overconsolidation ratios (OCRs). The e-lgt curves reveal four distinct creep stages, and the soil exhibits significant time-dependent behavior that diminishes with depth. Triaxial tests highlight nonlinear stress–strain characteristics, where increasing confining pressure elevates the deviatoric stress required for creep acceleration. A proposed structural parameter exhibits an inverse correlation with creep deformation, which suggests that enhanced soil cementation can improve long-term stability. This finding provides critical insights for the management of silt foundations in Wenzhou. Full article
