There is a dearth of research on New Testament and Johannine anthropology and its ethical demands. This paper advances the discussion by arguing that Mary Magdalene (John 20:1–18) demonstrates the limits and horizons of Johannine anthropology from the perspective of a woman’s response to the trauma of the Roman crucifixion of Jesus, his missing, tortured, and crucified body, and her encounter with the Risen Lord. This feminist-trauma hermeneutical characterization of Mary Magdalene, through exploring Johannine anthropology, critically engages Judith Herman’s discussion of the process from trauma to recovery. Read in the context of thousands of extrajudicial killings (EJK) in the so-called “War on Drugs” (2016–2022), Mary Magdalene embodies the anthropological limits of needing to secure the dead body of Jesus, remembering him, and mourning (20:1–15). The anthropological horizon is seen in Jesus sending her, with his resurrection and ascension message, to the rest as a reconnection with ordinary life (20:16–18). The insights gathered from the feminist-trauma hermeneutics study contribute to a Johannine anthropology that informs and inspires the surviving families of the EJK victims, as well as the theologians and pastoral workers who journey with them towards justice and healing with Mary Magdalene as a companion. Drug resistance remains a major challenge in epilepsy, and overexpression of ATP-binding cassette transporters, particularly P-glycoprotein (P-gp), at the blood–brain barrier (BBB) has been consistently implicated in limiting central nervous system drug exposure. Genetic experimental models suitable for investigating molecular regulation and functional alterations of P-gp in epilepsy remain scarce. This study evaluated P-gp expression and functional alterations in the Wistar Audiogenic Rat (WAR), a genetic model of epilepsy exhibiting phenotypic heterogeneity. WAR animals were classified into refractory epilepsy (WAR-RE) or temporal lobe epilepsy (WAR-TLE) phenotypes and compared with non-epileptic Wistar controls. Fexofenadine, a well-established in vivo P-gp probe substrate, was administered orally, and plasma pharmacokinetic parameters were determined. P-gp expression at the BBB was assessed by immunohistochemistry in hippocampal regions. WAR-RE animals exhibited significantly increased systemic exposure to fexofenadine, characterized by higher area under the curve and prolonged half-life, alongside reduced apparent clearance, compared with control animals (p < 0.05). In contrast, WAR-TLE animals showed greater interindividual variability without statistically significant differences. Immunohistochemical analysis revealed increased P-gp expression in hippocampal microvessels in both WAR phenotypes. These findings demonstrate that the WAR model displays molecular upregulation of P-gp at the BBB, accompanied by functional alterations in the disposition of a prototypical P-gp substrate. Although direct brain drug concentrations were not assessed, the integration of systemic pharmacokinetics with transporter expression supports the use of WAR as a genetic proof-of-concept model for studying P-gp regulation and transporter-mediated drug disposition in epilepsy. This model provides a valuable molecular framework for future investigations addressing transporter modulation and mechanisms underlying pharmacoresistance. Full article

Background: Major geopolitical events and structural shocks are thought to play a significant role in shaping HIV epidemics by influencing individual behaviours, reshaping social networks, and impacting HIV prevention and treatment programs. Here, we describe individual-level measures of estimated time since HIV infection (ETI) from viral next-generation sequencing data among female sex workers and their clients in relation to significant geopolitical events in Ukraine. Methods: The Dynamics Study is a cross-sectional integrated biological and behavioural survey conducted among female sex workers and their clients in Dnipro, Ukraine (December 2017 to March 2018). We were able to successfully sequence a portion of the HIV pol gene on dried blood spot specimens among n = 5/9 clients and n = 5/16 female sex workers who tested positive for HIV (total n = 10/25) using an in-house drug resistance genotyping assay. The “HIV EVO” Intrapatient HIV Evolution web-based tool was used to infer ETI from viral diversity. Results: The median ETIs for female sex workers and their clients were 5.4 years (IQR = 2.9, 6.6) and 6.5 years (IQR = 5.4, 10.8), respectively. Nearly all HIV acquisition events (n = 7/10; 70%) were estimated to have occurred between the Great Recession (2008–2009) and the War in Donbas (May 2014–February 2022). In general, ETI suggests that HIV acquisition occurred earlier among clients (2012 [IQR = 2007, 2013]) compared to sex workers (2013 [IQR = 2012, 2016]). Conclusion: Our findings suggest that most HIV acquisition in this small subset of female sex workers and clients living with HIV occurred during periods of economic decline. Molecular studies on timing of HIV acquisition against timing of major geopolitical events offer a novel way to contextualize how such events may shape transmission patterns. Full article

The war between humans and bacteria started centuries ago. With the advent of antibiotics, there was a temporary ceasefire in this war, but the scenario soon started becoming worse with the emergence of drug-resistant strains within years of the deployment of antibiotics in the market. With the surge in the misuse of antibiotics, there was a drastic increase in the number of multidrug-resistant (MDR) and extensively drug-resistant bacterial strains, even to antibiotics like Methicillin and vancomycin, aggravating the healthcare scenario. The threat of MDR ESKAPE pathogens is particularly high in nosocomial infections, where biofilms formed by bacteria create a protective barrier that makes them highly resistant to antibiotics, complicating the treatment efforts. Scientists are looking at natural and sustainable solutions, as several studies have projected deaths contributed by drug-resistant bacteria to go beyond 50 million by 2050. Many plant-derived metabolites have shown excellent antibacterial and antibiofilm properties that can be tapped for combating superbugs. The present review explores the current status of various studies on antibacterial plant metabolites like alkaloids and flavonoids and their mechanisms in disrupting biofilms and killing bacteria by way of inhibiting key survival strategies of bacteria like motility, quorum-sensing, reactive oxygen species production, and adhesion. These mechanisms were found to be varied in Gram-positive, Gram-negative, and acid-fast bacteria like Mycobacterium tuberculosis, which will be discussed in detail. The successful tapping of the benefits of such plant-derived chemicals in combination with evolving techniques of nanotechnology and targeted drug delivery can go a long way in achieving the goal of One Health, which advocates the unity of multiple practices for the optimal health of people, animals, and the environment. In a hidden corner of the Earth, an ongoing war is being waged: a battle between lichens and microorganisms. Lichens, ancient and unique symbiotic organisms, with their unique survival wisdom, are bursting with vitality in extreme environments. Over 80% of secondary metabolites in lichens are not found in other organisms, making lichen-derived compounds a promising resource for the development of new drugs, particularly against drug-resistant microorganisms, due to their distinctive chemical structures and biological activities. This article aims to explore in depth the lichen species exhibiting antimicrobial activity and their antimicrobial metabolites and focus on unique compounds such as divaricatic acid, usnic acid, vulpinic acid, salazinic acid, and rhizocarpic acid, which demonstrate significant antimicrobial effects against various resistant microorganisms, including methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus, drug-resistant Mycobacterium tuberculosis, and Candida albicans and other drug-resistant microorganisms. Meanwhile, this paper discusses the potential applications and challenges associated with the use of lichens in medicine, agriculture, and food industry, aiming to elucidate these mysterious organisms for lichen researchers and enthusiasts while promoting further research and applications in the field of antimicrobials. Similarly to “wars” on drugs and terrorism, the fight against corruption has recently emerged as an attractive political tool. From Argentina and India to the United States and the Philippines, anti-corruption rhetoric has been successfully utilized by political outsiders to challenge establishment candidates. It remains less clear, however, whether anti-corruption enforcement allows incumbent politicians to hold on to power. In this article, we use a comparative subnational design to analyze the impact of corruption prosecutions on electoral support for the president of Russia. By combining original survey data on popular political attitudes and behaviors as well as citizens’ own participation in petty corruption with official statistics on corruption prosecutions, on the one hand, and data on media coverage of regional corruption scandals, on the other, we reveal a small negative effect of anti-corruptionism on voting for Putin. Our data allow us to adjudicate among several theoretical mechanisms that may lead to this effect. We find that, although ordinary Russians dislike corruption and expect the federal government to fight it, Putin’s anti-corruption enforcement has failed to convince the population that he is the right man for the job. Some Russians, we argue, take the Kremlin’s prosecutions as an indicator of the regime’s failure to prevent corruption among its agents, while others resent the administration for trying to score political points through hyped-up and punitive anti-corruptionism. The carceral apparatus in the U.S. can be understood as mechanisms of policing, criminalizing, and incarcerating through the criminal justice system in its traditional sense but also encompassing mechanisms of social control, surveillance, and violence exerted through other systems such as family policing organizations, social service agencies, and helping professions. As we are witnessing the impacts of the toxic drug supply crisis and continued reliance on the “war on drugs” policies, these carceral functions are deeply felt among people who use drugs and have substance use disorders. This qualitative study uses the Foucauldian lens of biopolitics and biopower to examine how power operates in carceral systems and impacts women who use substances. By conducting and analyzing in-depth interviews with four women who identify as systems-involved in the U.S., this study highlights that power operates in a multitude of ways. The findings highlight the gendered experience these individuals face navigating these systems of circularity, including the minimization of bodily autonomy, the destruction of social reproduction, and coercive performances to the patriarchal gaze. The findings also amplify the women’s perspective on systemic change and offer alternatives to current carceral approaches. This research provides insights for social service professionals in all fields for more liberatory approaches to working with women in carceral settings and proposes a radical departure from current trajectories of social control and criminalization. Background: The wave of wartime migration from Ukraine has raised a number of concerns about infectious diseases, the prevalence of which is higher in Ukraine than in host countries, with hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection being one of them. Our analysis aimed to assess the percentage of HCV-infected Ukrainian refugees under care in Polish centers providing antiviral diagnosis and therapy, to evaluate their characteristics and the effectiveness of treatment with direct-acting antiviral drugs (DAAs). Methods: The analysis included patients of Polish and Ukrainian nationality treated for HCV infection between 2022 and 2024 in Polish hepatology centers. Data were collected retrospectively and completed online. Results: In the population of 3911 patients with chronic hepatitis C treated with DAAs in 16 Polish centers in 2022–2024, there were 429 war refugees from Ukraine, accounting for 11% of the total treated. The Ukrainian population was significantly younger (45.7 vs. 51 years, p < 0.001) and had a higher percentage of women (50.3% vs. 45.3%, p = 0.048) compared to Polish patients. Patients of Ukrainian origin had less advanced liver disease and were significantly less likely to have comorbidities and the need for comedications. Coinfection with human immunodeficiency virus was significantly more common in Ukrainians than in Polish patients, 16.1% vs. 5.9% (p < 0.001). The distribution of HCV genotypes (GTs) also differed; although GT1b predominated in both populations, its frequency was significantly higher in the Polish population (62.3% vs. 44.5%, p < 0.001), while the second most common GT3 was significantly more common in Ukrainian patients (30.5% vs. 16.2%, p < 0.001). Conclusions: Documented differences in patient characteristics did not affect the effectiveness of antiviral therapy, which exceeded 97% in both populations, but there was a higher rate of those lost to follow-up among Ukrainian patients. Pandemics of infectious disease and growing anti-microbial resistance (AMR) pose major threats to global health, trade, and security. Conflict and climate change compound and accelerate these threats. The One Health approach recognizes the interconnectedness of human, animal, and environmental health, but is grounded in the biomedical model, which reduces health to the absence of disease. Biomedical responses are insufficient to meet the challenges. The COVID-19 pandemic is the most recent example of the failure of this biomedical model to address global threats, the limitations of laboratory-based surveillance, and the exclusive focus on vaccination for disease control. This paper examines the current paradigm through the lens of polio and the global campaign to eradicate it, as well as other infectious threats including mpox and drug-resistant tuberculosis, particularly in the context of armed conflict. Decades before vaccines became widely available, public health measures—ventilation, chlorination, nutrition and sanitation— led to longer, healthier, and even taller lives. Chlorine, our primary tool of public health, conquered cholera and transformed infection control in hospitals. The World Health Organization (WHO), part of the One Health alliance, focuses mainly on antibiotics and vaccines to reduce deaths due to superbugs and largely ignores the critical role of chlorine to control water-borne diseases (including polio) and other infections. Moreover, the One Health approach ignores armed conflict. Contemporary wars are characterized by indiscriminate bombing of civilians, attacks targeting healthcare, mass displacement and lack of humanitarian access, conditions which drive polio outbreaks and incubate superbugs. We discuss the growing trend of attacks on healthcare and differentiate between types: community-driven attacks targeting vaccinators in regions like Pakistan, and state-sponsored attacks by governments such as those of Syria and Russia that weaponize healthcare to deliberately harm whole populations. Both fuel outbreaks of disease. These distinct motivations necessitate tailored responses, yet the WHO aggregates these attacks in a manner that hampers effective intervention. While antimicrobial resistance is predictable, the escalating pandemic is the consequence of our reliance on antibiotics and commitment to a biomedical model that now borders on pathological. Our analysis reveals the international indenture to the biomedical model as the basis of disease control is the root driver of AMR and vaccine-derived polio. The unique power of vaccines is reduced by vaccination-only strategy, and in fact breeds vaccine-derived polio. The non-specific effects of vaccines must be leveraged, and universal vaccination must be supplemented by international investment in water chlorination. This will reduce health costs and strengthen global health security. While vaccines are an important weapon to combat pandemics and AMR, they must be accompanied by the entire arsenal of public health interventions. Full article

Fifty-two years have passed since President Nixon launched the “War on Cancer”. Despite unparalleled efforts and funds allocated worldwide, the outlined goals were not achieved because cancer treatment approaches such as chemotherapy, radiation therapy, hormonal and targeted therapies have not fully met the expectations. Based on the recent literature, a new direction in cancer therapy can be proposed which targets connections between cancer cells and their microenvironment by chemical means. Cancer–stromal synapses such as immunological synapses between cancer and immune cells provide an attractive target for this approach. Such synapses form ligand–receptor clusters on the interface of the interacting cells. They share a common property of involving intercellular clusters of spatially proximate and cooperatively acting proteins. Synapses provide the space for the focused intercellular signaling molecules exchange. Thus, the disassembly of cancer–stromal synapses may potentially cause the collapse of various tumors. Additionally, the clustered arrangement of synapse components offers opportunities to enhance treatment safety and precision by using targeted crosslinking chemical agents which may inactivate cancer synapses even in reduced concentrations. Furthermore, attaching a cleavable cell-permeable toxic agent(s) to a crosslinker may further enhance the anti-cancer effect of such therapeutics. The highlighted approach promises to be universal, relatively simple and cost-efficient. We also hope that, unlike chemotherapeutic and immune drugs that interact with a single target, by using supramolecular large clusters that include many different components as a target, the emergence of a resistance characteristic of chemo- and immunotherapy is extremely unlikely. The pathogenesis of ocular diseases (ODs) remains unclear, although genome-wide association studies (GWAS) have identified numerous associated genetic risk loci. We integrated protein quantitative trait loci (pQTL) datasets and five large-scale GWAS summary statistics of ODs under a cutting-edge systematic analytic framework. Proteome-wide association studies (PWAS) identified plasma and brain proteins associated with ODs, and 11 plasma proteins were identified by Mendelian randomization (MR) and colocalization (COLOC) analyses as being potentially causally associated with ODs. Five of these proteins (protein-coding genes ECI1, LCT, and NPTXR for glaucoma, WARS1 for age-related macular degeneration (AMD), and SIGLEC14 for diabetic retinopathy (DR)) are newly reported. Twenty brain-protein–OD pairs were identified by COLOC analysis. Eight pairs (protein-coding genes TOM1L2, MXRA7, RHPN2, and HINT1 for senile cataract, WARS1 and TDRD7 for AMD, STAT6 for myopia, and TPPP3 for DR) are newly reported in this study. Phenotype-disease mapping analysis revealed 10 genes related to the eye/vision phenotype or ODs. Combined with a drug exploration analysis, we found that the drugs related to C3 and TXN have been used for the treatment of ODs, and another eight genes (GSTM3 for senile cataract, IGFBP7 and CFHR1 for AMD, PTPMT1 for glaucoma, EFEMP1 and ACP1 for myopia, SIRPG and CTSH for DR) are promising targets for pharmacological interventions. Our study highlights the role played by proteins in ODs, in which brain proteins were taken into account due to the deepening of eye–brain connection studies. The potential pathogenic proteins finally identified provide a more reliable reference range for subsequent medical studies. Full article

Schistosomiasis is a parasitosis caused by trematodes of the genus Schistosoma. Humans are infected when coming into contact with freshwater containing the parasites’ infective stages, which are amplified through freshwater-dwelling snails acting as intermediate hosts. Schistosomiasis has posed significant problems for troops exposed to freshwater in endemic regions ever since the Napoleonic wars. Schistosomiasis has substantial differences in clinical presentation, depending on the type of parasite, intensity of infection and reinfection, clinical form, and disease stage. It can remain undiagnosed for long periods of time, with well-known long-term morbidity and mortality risks. The diagnosis of schistosomiasis depends on its stage and relays on several tests, all with limitations in sensitivity and specificity. The diagnostic gold standard is the detection of eggs in urine, feces, or tissue biopsies, but this can raise problems in patients such as military personnel, in which the worm burden is usually low. Praziquantel is the drug of choice for schistosomiasis. Currently, there is no available commercial vaccine against any Schistosoma parasite. Avoiding freshwater exposure is the best prevention. Herein, we review the clinical presentation, diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of schistosomiasis in the military. This information may decrease the impact of schistosomiasis on this particular professional group. Full article

Suicide research is directed at understanding social, economic, and biological causes of suicide thoughts and behaviors. (1) Background: Worldwide, certain countries have high suicide mortality rates (SMRs) compared to others. Age-standardized suicide mortality rates (SMRs) published by the World Health Organization (WHO) plus numerous bibliographic records of the Web of Science (WoS) database provide resources to understand these disparities between countries and regions. (2) Methods: Hierarchical clustering was applied to age-standardized suicide mortality rates per 100,000 population from 2000–2019. Keywords of country-specific suicide-related publications collected from WoS were analyzed by network and association rule mining. Keyword embedding was carried out using a recurrent neural network. (3) Results: Countries with similar SMR trends formed naturally distinct groups of high, medium, and low suicide mortality rates. Major themes in suicide research worldwide are depression, mental disorders, youth suicide, euthanasia, hopelessness, loneliness, unemployment, and drugs. Prominent themes differentiating countries and regions include: alcohol in post-Soviet countries; HIV/AIDS in Sub-Saharan Africa, war veterans and PTSD in the Middle East, students in East Asia, and many others. (4) Conclusion: Countries naturally group into high, medium, and low SMR categories characterized by different keyword-informed themes. The compiled dataset and presented methodology enable enrichment of analytical results by bibliographic data where observed results are difficult to interpret. Full article

Combinations of different drugs are formulated in autoinjectors for parenteral administration against neurotoxic war agents. In this work, the effects on the chemical stability of the following three variables were studied: (i) type of drug combination (pralidoxime, atropine, and midazolam versus obidoxime, atropine, and midazolam); (ii) pH (3 versus 4); and (iii) type of elastomeric sealing material (PH 701/50 C BLACK versus 4023/50 GRAY). Syringes were stored at three different temperatures: 4, 25, and 40 °C. Samples were assayed at different time points to study the physical appearance, drug sorption on the sealing elastomeric materials, and drug content in solution. Midazolam was unstable in all tested experimental conditions. Drug adsorption was observed in both types of sealing elastomeric materials and was significantly (p < 0.01) dependent on the lipophilicity of the drug. The most stable formulation was the combination of pralidoxime and atropine at pH 4 with the elastomeric sealing material 4023/50 GRAY. Full article

Since 2012, twenty-four states have legalized adult-use recreational cannabis. To varying degrees, state laws allow for the production, distribution, retail sale, and on-site consumption of cannabis in licensed businesses. Accompanying cannabis, some legalization has acknowledged that black and brown communities were disproportionately impacted by the war on drugs. To address this, social equity provisions have been a component of their public policies related to cannabis legalization. These provisions include measures to expunge cannabis-related criminal records and create social equity set-asides for cannabis business licenses. This paper’s research question asks if, under its current structure and implementation, recreational cannabis laws achieve social equity goals. The methods for the analysis apply content analysis to public policy documents and quantify recreational cannabis licensing outcomes. These methods were applied to a comparative analysis of social equity provisions in state and local cannabis laws applicable to large U.S. cities (2020 population > 600,000). This analysis focuses on the characteristics of set-asides for social equity licenses to sell recreational cannabis. The analysis examines the scope of social equity policies, their administration and implementation, and the characteristics of licensees. The findings from the analysis are used to identify a model policy framework and generate recommendations to strengthen social equity outcomes in recreational cannabis licensing. Full article
