LPG fuel supply systems are increasingly important for improving energy efficiency and reducing carbon emissions in the shipping industry. The primary objective of this research is to investigate the heat transfer phenomena to enhance the thermal performance of double-pipe heat exchangers (DPHEs) in LPG fuel supply systems. This study investigates the heat transfer performance of a glycol–steam double-pipe heat exchanger (DPHE) within an LPG fuel supply system under varying operating conditions. A computational model and methodology were developed and validated by comparing the numerical results with experimental data obtained from commissioning tests. Additionally, the effects of turbulence models and parametric variations were evaluated by analyzing the glycol–water mixing ratio and flow direction—both of which are critical operational parameters for DPHE systems. Numerical validation against the commissioning data showed a deviation of ±2% under parallel-flow conditions, confirming the reliability of the proposed model. With respect to the glycol–water mixing ratio and flow configuration, thermal conductance (UA) decreased by approximately 11% in parallel flow and 13% in counter flow for every 20% increase in glycol concentration. Furthermore, parallel flow exhibited approximately 0.6% higher outlet temperatures than counter flow, indicating superior heat transfer efficiency under parallel-flow conditions. Finally, the heat transfer behavior of the DPHE was further examined by considering the effects of geometric characteristics, pipe material, and fluid properties. This study offers significant contributions to the engineering design of double-pipe heat exchanger systems for LPG fuel supply applications. Full article

This study examines non-standard comparative and superlative adjective forms in Ukrainian and English, emphasizing their evaluative meanings and grammatical deviations. While prescriptive grammar dictates conventional comparison patterns, modern discourse—particularly in advertising, informal communication, and literary texts—exhibits an increasing prevalence of innovative comparative structures. Using a corpus-based approach, this research identifies patterns of positive and negative evaluative meanings, revealing that positive evaluations dominate non-standard comparatives in both languages, particularly in advertising (English: 78.5%, Ukrainian: 80.2%). However, English exhibits a higher tolerance for grammatical flexibility, while Ukrainian maintains a more restricted use, primarily in commercial and expressive discourse. The findings highlight the pragmatic and evaluative functions of such constructions, including hyperbolic emphasis, rhetorical contrast, and branding strategies. These insights contribute to research on comparative grammar, sentiment analysis, and natural language processing, particularly in modeling evaluative structures in computational linguistics. A method for selecting mechanical properties and geometry of reinforcing overlays to increase the strength of composite structural elements with holes has been developed. The method is based on the developed algorithm for calculating stress concentration near holes reinforced with inserted rings or glued composite reinforcing overlays. The determination of stresses near holes and overlays is reduced to solving a system of singular integral equations. The kernels of these equations are constructed using Green’s solution, which allows a reduction in the number of equations to four. It is shown that the stress concentration near holes can be significantly reduced by optimizing the thickness, elastic properties, and shape of the overlays. The stress calculations performed based on the three-dimensional theory of elasticity confirmed the reliability of the results obtained within the framework of the plane problem of an anisotropic body. The results obtained, in accordance with the concept of sustainable development, enable the develop simple methods for increasing reliability, reducing material consumption, and reducing the manufacturing and operating costs of composite structures in the aerospace and mechanical engineering industries. The level of participation and performance of water user associations (WUAs) in drained and irrigated areas is influenced by many factors. This paper aims to identify the main challenges to the functioning and performance of these associations in Poland and Ukraine using the methodology of international comparative analysis. We examined legal, organizational, and financial framework of WUAs performance in Poland and Ukraine based on selected case study areas. The results of the study indicate that creation of WUAs in both countries can be assessed as beneficial for sustainable water development in general. However, it is found that the actions intended to bring benefits can actually exacerbate the problem of drought and water shortages. Research shows that the lack of complete documentation on the layout of the drainage networks plays a huge constraint factor that can lead to problems with controlling the reconstruction of drainage networks and significant deterioration of water relations. Another significant problem is the restriction of the scope of WUA activities in Poland to those types of actions subsidized by the state, while lacking financial resources for other necessary activities. Pancreatic cancer (PC) is an aggressive malignancy with a poor prognosis, requiring innovative approaches to evaluate new therapies. Considering the high activity of unsymmetrical bisacridines (UAs) in PC monolayer cultures, we employed multicellular tumor spheroids (MCTS) to assess whether UAs retain pro-apoptotic activity under more physiologically relevant conditions. Ultra-low attachment plates were used to form spheroids from three PC cell lines (Panc-1, MIA PaCa-2, and AsPC-1) with different genotypes and phenotypes. The effects of UA derivatives (C-2028, C-2045, and C-2053) were evaluated using microscopy and flow cytometry (7-AAD for viability and annexin V-FITC/PI for membrane integrity). UAs altered the morphology of the spheroids and reduced their growth. Notably, Panc-1 spheroids exhibited compromised integrity. The increase in 7-AAD+ cells confirmed diminished cell viability, and annexin V-FITC assays showed apoptosis as the dominant death pathway. Interestingly, the exact derivative was most active against a given cell line regardless of culture conditions. These results confirm that UAs maintain anticancer activity in 3D cultures and induce apoptosis, with varying efficacy across different cell lines. This underscores the value of diverse cellular models in compound evaluation and supports UAs as promising candidates for pancreatic cancer therapy. Full article

Wellington, New Zealand, is highly vulnerable to disaster-induced food security crises due to its geography and geological characteristics, which can disrupt transportation and isolate the city following disasters. Urban agriculture (UA) has been proposed as a potential alternative food source for post-disaster scenarios. This study examined the potential of urban agriculture for enhancing post-disaster food security by calculating vegetable self-sufficiency rates. Specifically, it evaluated the capacity of current Wellington’s community gardens to meet post-disaster vegetable demand in terms of both weight and nutrient content. Data collection employed mixed methods with questionnaires, on-site observations and mapping, and collecting high-resolution aerial imagery. Garden yields were estimated using self-reported data supported by literature benchmarks, while cultivated areas were quantified through on-site mapping and aerial imagery analysis. Six post-disaster food demand scenarios were used based on different target populations to develop an understanding of the range of potential produce yields. Weight-based results show that community gardens currently supply only 0.42% of the vegetable demand for residents living within a five-minute walk. This rate increased to 2.07% when specifically targeting only vulnerable populations, and up to 10.41% when focusing on gardeners’ own households. However, at the city-wide level, the current capacity of community gardens to provide enough produce to feed people remained limited. Nutrient-based self-sufficiency was lower than weight-based results; however, nutrient intake is particularly critical for vulnerable populations after disasters, underscoring the greater challenge of ensuring adequate nutrition through current urban food production. Beyond self-sufficiency, this study also addressed the role of UA in promoting food diversity and acceptability, as well as its social and psychological benefits based on the questionnaires and on-site observations. The findings indicate that community gardens contribute meaningfully to post-disaster food security for gardeners and nearby residents, particularly for vulnerable groups with elevated nutritional needs. Despite the current limited capacity of community gardens to provide enough produce to feed residents, findings suggest that Wellington could enhance post-disaster food self-reliance by diversifying UA types and optimizing land-use to increase food production during and after a disaster. Realizing this potential will require strategic interventions, including supportive policies, a conducive social environment, and diversification—such as the including private yards—all aimed at improving food access, availability, and nutritional quality during crises. The primary limitation of this study is the lack of comprehensive data on urban agriculture in Wellington and the wider New Zealand context. Addressing this data gap should be a key focus for future research to enable more robust assessments and evidence-based planning. Full article

This study presents an extended approach to compartmental modeling of infectious disease spread, focusing on regional heterogeneity within affected areas. Using classical SIS, SIR, and SEIR frameworks, we simulate the dynamics of COVID-19 across two major regions of Ukraine—Dnipropetrovsk and Kharkiv—during the period 2020–2024. The proposed mathematical model incorporates regionally distributed subpopulations and applies a system of differential equations solved using the classical fourth-order Runge–Kutta method. The simulations are validated against real-world epidemiological data from national and international sources. The SEIR model demonstrated superior performance, achieving maximum relative errors of 4.81% and 5.60% in the Kharkiv and Dnipropetrovsk regions, respectively, outperforming the SIS and SIR models. Despite limited mobility and social contact data, the regionally adapted models achieved acceptable accuracy for medium-term forecasting. This validates the practical applicability of extended compartmental models in public health planning, particularly in settings with constrained data availability. The results further support the use of these models for estimating critical epidemiological indicators such as infection peaks and hospital resource demands. The proposed framework offers a scalable and computationally efficient tool for regional epidemic forecasting, with potential applications to future outbreaks in geographically heterogeneous environments. Soil sealing and land take are increasingly recognised as critical environmental and land use planning challenges across Europe. Although these issues have received limited attention in Baltic policymaking and the academic literature to date, available data indicate ongoing land consumption despite population decline. This study aims to analyse soil sealing patterns in Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania between 2018 and 2021 using CLC+ Backbone data, linking them to demographic shifts and local planning frameworks. Results reveal that soil sealing increased in nearly all municipalities across the Baltic states, regardless of population trends. The analysis highlights that shrinking municipalities, constrained by limited resources and declining populations, are structurally disadvantaged in terms of land use efficiency, particularly when measured by sealed area per capita. Moreover, this study discusses emerging policy tensions, including the narrowing conceptual gap between land take and soil sealing in the proposed EU Soil Monitoring and Resilience Directive, as well as the risk of overlooking broader land artificialisation. The findings underscore the need for context-sensitive, multi-scalar approaches to land use monitoring and governance, particularly in sparsely populated and demographically imbalanced regions, such as the Baltic states. Ensuring software quality during development requires effective regression testing. However, test suites in open-source libraries often grow large, redundant, and difficult to maintain. Most traditional test suite optimization methods treat test cases as atomic units, without analyzing the utility of individual instructions. This paper presents an intelligent method for test case synthesis using a Q-learning agent. The agent learns to construct compact test cases by interacting with an execution environment and receives rewards based on branch coverage improvements and simultaneous reductions in test case length. The training process includes a pretraining phase that transfers knowledge from the original test suite, followed by adaptive learning episodes on individual test cases. As a result, the method requires no formal documentation or API specifications and uses only execution traces of the original test cases. An explicit synthesis algorithm constructs new test cases by selecting API calls from a learned policy encoded in a Q-table. Experiments were conducted on two open-source C++ libraries of differing API complexity and original test suite size. The results show that the proposed method can reach up to 67% test suite reduction while preserving branch coverage, confirming its effectiveness for regression test suite minimization in resource-constrained or specification-limited environments. Glioblastoma (GBM) remains one of the most aggressive and treatment-resistant brain tumors, largely due to its profound intratumoral heterogeneity and immunosuppressive microenvironment. Various classifications of GBM subtypes were created based on transcriptional and methylation profiles. This effort, followed by the development of new technology such as single-nuclei sequencing (snRNAseq) and spatial transcriptomics, led to a better understanding of the glioma cells’ plasticity and their ability to transition between diverse cellular states. GBM cells can mimic neurodevelopmental programs to resemble oligodendrocyte or neural progenitor behavior and hitchhike the local neuronal network to support their growth. The tumor microenvironment, especially under hypoxic conditions, drives the tumor cell clonal selection, which then reshapes the immune cells’ functions. These adaptations contribute to immune evasion by progressively disabling T cell and myeloid cell functions, ultimately establishing a highly immunosuppressive tumor milieu. This complex and metabolically constrained environment poses a major barrier to effective antitumor immunity and limits the success of conventional therapies. Understanding the dynamic interactions between glioma cells and their microenvironment is essential for the development of more effective immunotherapies and rational combination strategies aimed at overcoming resistance and improving patient outcomes. Cardiovascular Risk in Rheumatic Patients Treated with JAK Inhibitors: The Role of Traditional and Emerging Biomarkers in a Pilot Study

Background: Despite therapeutic advances, morbidity and mortality remain high in patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and psoriatic arthritis (PsA), primarily due to increased cardiovascular risk. Objectives: Our study aimed to evaluate the cardiovascular risk profile and biomarker dynamics in patients with RA and PsA treated with Janus kinase inhibitors (JAKis). To our knowledge, this is the first study assessing Lp(a) levels in this context. Methods: This prospective, observational study assessed 48 adult patients. The follow-up period was 12 months. Traditional cardiovascular risk factors and biological markers, including lipid profile, lipoprotein(a) [Lp(a)], and uric acid (UA), were assessed at baseline and follow-up. Correlations between JAKi therapy, lipid profile changes, and cardiovascular risk factors were investigated. Cox regression analysis was used to identify predictors of non-major cardiovascular events. Results: A strong positive correlation was observed between baseline and 12-month Lp(a) levels (r = 0.926), despite minor statistical shifts. No major cardiovascular events occurred during follow-up; however, 47.9% of patients experienced non-major cardiovascular events (e.g., uncontrolled arterial hypertension, exertional angina, and new-onset arrhythmias). Active smoking [hazard ratio (HR) 9.853, p = 0.005], obesity (HR 3.7460, p = 0.050), and arterial hypertension (HR 1.219, p = 0.021) were independent predictors of these events. UA (HR 1.515, p = 0.040) and total cholesterol (TC) (HR 1.019, p = 0.034) were significant biochemical predictors as well. Elevated baseline Lp(a) combined with these factors was associated with an increased event rate, particularly after age 60. Conclusions: Traditional cardiovascular risk factors remain highly prevalent and predictive, underscoring the need for comprehensive cardiovascular risk management. Lp(a) remained stable and may serve as a complementary biomarker for risk stratification in JAKi-treated patients. Full article

Background: The majority of parotid gland tumors are benign, e.g., pleomorphic adenoma (PA) and Warthin’s tumor (WT). From a biomedical point of view, oxidative stress is of significant importance due to its established association with the initiation and progression of various types of cancer, including parotid gland cancers. This study aimed to assess whether blood prooxidant–antioxidant markers could aid in diagnosing and guiding surgery for recurrent malignancies after parotid tumor treatment. Methods: We examined patients (n = 20) diagnosed with WT (n = 14) and PA (n = 6) using histopathological verification and computed tomography (CT) who qualified for surgical treatment. Blood samples were taken before the surgery and again 10 days later for biochemical analysis. The activities of the antioxidant enzymes (SOD, CAT and GPx), the non-enzymatic antioxidants (GSH and UA) and oxidative stress markers (MDA and TOS) were determined in the blood. The activities of CK and LDH and the concentrations of Cor and TAS were measured in the serum. Hb and Ht were determined in whole blood. Results: The patients’ SOD, CAT, and GPx activities after surgery did not differ significantly from their preoperative levels. However, following surgery, their serum TOS levels were significantly elevated in all the patients compared to baseline. In contrast, the plasma MDA concentrations were markedly reduced after surgery. Similarly, the GSH concentrations showed a significant decrease postoperatively. No significant changes were observed in the CK and LDH activities, TAS concentrations, or levels of Hb, Ht and Cor following surgery. Conclusions: The surgical removal of salivary gland tumors did not result in a reduction in oxidative stress at 10 days after surgery. Therefore, further studies are needed to determine the effectiveness of endogenous defense mechanisms in counteracting the oxidative stress induced by salivary gland tumors. Full article

This article presents the design, development, and evaluation of an AI-based assistant tailored to support users in the application of the Specific Operations Risk Assessment (SORA) methodology for unmanned aircraft systems. Built on a customized language model, the assistant was trained using system-level instructions with the goal of translating complex regulatory concepts into clear and actionable guidance. The approach combines structured definitions, contextualized examples, constrained response behavior, and references to authoritative sources such as JARUS and EASA. Rather than substituting expert or regulatory roles, the assistant provides process-oriented support, helping users understand and complete the various stages of risk assessment. The model’s effectiveness is illustrated through practical interaction scenarios, demonstrating its value across educational, operational, and advisory use cases, and its potential to contribute to the digital transformation of safety and compliance processes in the drone ecosystem. Features of the Structure of Layered Epoxy Composite Coatings Formed on a Metal-Ceramic-Coated Aluminum Base

Difficult, extreme operating conditions of parabolic antennas under precipitation and sub-zero temperatures require the creation of effective heating systems. The purpose of the research is to develop a multilayer coating containing two metal-ceramic layers, epoxy composite layers, carbon fabric, and an outer layer of basalt fabric, which allows for effective heating of the antenna, and to study the properties of this coating. The multilayer coating was formed on an aluminum base that was subjected to abrasive jet processing. The first and second metal-ceramic layers, Al2O3 + 5% Al, which were applied by high-speed multi-chamber cumulative detonation spraying (CDS), respectively, provide maximum adhesion strength to the aluminum base and high adhesion strength to the third layer of the epoxy composite containing Al2O3. On this not-yet-polymerized layer of epoxy composite containing Al2O3, a layer of carbon fabric (impregnated with epoxy resin) was formed, which serves as a resistive heating element. On top of this carbon fabric, a layer of epoxy composite containing Cr2O3 and SiO2 was applied. Next, basalt fabric was applied to this still-not-yet-polymerized layer. Then, the resulting layered coating was compacted and dried. To study this multilayer coating, X-ray analysis, light and raster scanning microscopy, and transmission electron microscopy were used. The thickness of the coating layers and microhardness were measured on transverse microsections. The adhesion strength of the metal-ceramic coating layers to the aluminum base was determined by both bending testing and peeling using the adhesive method. It was established that CDS provides the formation of metal-ceramic layers with a maximum fraction of lamellae and a microhardness of 7900–10,520 MPa. In these metal-ceramic layers, a dispersed subgrain structure, a uniform distribution of nanoparticles, and a gradient-free level of dislocation density are observed. Such a structure prevents the formation of local concentrators of internal stresses, thereby increasing the level of dispersion and substructural strengthening of the metal-ceramic layers’ material. The formation of materials with a nanostructure increases their strength and crack resistance. The effectiveness of using aluminum, chromium, and silicon oxides as nanofillers in epoxy composite layers was demonstrated. The presence of structures near the surface of these nanofillers, which differ from the properties of the epoxy matrix in the coating, was established. Such zones, specifically the outer surface layers (OSL), significantly affect the properties of the epoxy composite. The results of industrial tests showed the high performance of the multilayer coating during antenna heating. Full article

The elastic and photoelastic coefficients of Ba3TaGa3Si2O14 (BTGS) crystals were determined by the quantum–mechanical calculation technique. Based on these data, extreme piezo-optic surfaces π′°km were constructed, which describe the change in the path difference in light beams in the crystal under the influence of mechanical stress. The results for BTGS crystals are compared with the ones for other crystals of the langasite group (La3Ga5SiO14, Ca3Ga2Ge4O14, Ca3TaGa3Si2O14 and Ca3NbGa3Si2O14). The global maxima of the π′°km surfaces for BTGS crystals significantly exceed the ones for the other crystals mentioned above and, accordingly, BTGS crystals can be suitable for use in polarization-optic light modulators and devices based on them. The acousto-optic efficiency of BTGS crystals was evaluated. The correlations between the magnitude of the piezo- and elasto-optic coefficients and the parameters of the unit cell of the studied crystals were determined. Full article
