The Apple TV+ series Severance (2022–present) offers a dystopian portrayal of workplace life that intensifies real-world dynamics of control, boundary management, and identity regulation. This paper analyzes Severance as a speculative case study in organizational theory, treating the show’s fictional world as a site for conceptual reflection. Drawing on critical management studies and labor process theory, we examine how mechanisms of control, the regulation of work–life boundaries, and the fragmentation of autonomy and subjectivity are depicted in extreme form. We argue that fiction—particularly speculative satire—can serve as a tool of theoretical production, not merely illustration. Rather than restating familiar critiques, Severance allows us to see workplace norms with renewed clarity, surfacing the moral and psychological consequences of surveillance, coercion, and instrumentalized consent. A methodological note outlines our interpretive approach to narrative fiction, and a discussion of implications situates the analysis within broader debates about organizational ethics, resilience, and critique. Is Bitcoin a Safe-Haven Asset During U.S. Presidential Transitions? A Time-Varying Analysis of Asset Correlations

Amid the growing debate over how cryptocurrencies are reshaping global finance, this study explores the nexus between Bitcoin, Brent Crude Oil, Gold and the U.S. Dollar Index. We used a time-varying vector autoregressive (tvVAR) model to examine the connection among these four assets during the Trump (2017–2020) and Biden (2021–2024) governments. The 48-week return forecast of the Bitcoin–Gold correlation was also conducted by using the Bayesian Structural Time Series (BSTS) model. Results indicate that Bitcoin was the most volatile asset, while the U.S. Dollar remained the least volatile under both regimes. Under Trump, U.S. Dollar significantly influenced Oil and Bitcoin while Bitcoin and Gold were negatively linked to Oil and positively associated with U.S. Dollar. An inverse relationship between Bitcoin and Gold also emerged. Under Biden, Bitcoin, Gold, and U.S. Dollar all significantly affected Oil with Bitcoin showing a positive impact. Bitcoin and Gold remained negatively correlated though not significantly, and the Dollar maintained positive ties with both. Forecasts show a positive link between Bitcoin and Gold in the coming year. However, Bitcoin does not exhibit consistent characteristics of a safe-haven asset during the U.S. presidential transitions examined, largely due to its high volatility and unstable correlations with a traditional safe-haven asset, Gold. This study contributes to the understanding of shifting relationships between digital and traditional assets across political regimes. Full article

Objective: To assess the long-term effects of Dienogest on clinical complaints and nodule sizes in women affected by recto-sigmoid deep endometriosis (DE). Methods: This was a single-center longitudinal prospective observational study comprising a consecutive series of women affected by recto-sigmoid DE, who underwent medical treatment with Dienogest (2 mg daily continuous). All women underwent clinical visits and transvaginal sonography (TVS) with bowel preparation prior to starting therapy and at 3–6-month intervals for at least 12 months. Clinical complaints such as dysmenorrhea, dyspareunia and dyschezia were assessed using a visual analog scale (VAS). The DE recto-sigmoid lesion was measured in the three orthogonal planes. The lesion’s volume was estimated using the prolate ellipsoid formula. The maximum diameter and lesion volume were used for analysis. Patients’ complaints and lesion sizes before starting the treatment and at final follow-up were compared. Results: From January 2017 to July 2020, 125 patients were consecutively recruited (mean age: 37 years, ranging from 20 to 50 years). The median follow-up period was 47.8 months (range: 12–74 months). We did not observe a significant correlation between the severity of the symptoms and the lesion size prior to starting therapy. Clinical complaints improved significantly during treatment (88% of women were symptomatic at initial visit, versus 53% at final follow-up, p < 0.001). The median lesion volume significantly decreased (median initial volume vs. final volume: 1.1 mL vs. 0.9 mL, p = 0.017). However, the median maximum lesion diameter did not change significantly (26.0 mm vs. 25.0 mm, p = 0.779). Conclusions: Long-term Dienogest therapy significantly relieves clinical symptoms related to recto-sigmoid DE. This is accompanied by a significant reduction in the lesion volume but not the maximum lesion diameter. Full article

Short videos’ increasing popularity and increased user engagement have sparked concerns about time perception. While studies have linked gaming or watching TV series to time loss, research on short videos’ temporal impact is scarce. This study aims to investigate the impact of short video use on time distortion (including perceptions of time for experimental tasks and weekly usage) through an experimental design. Fifty-six college students were randomly assigned to two time duration conditions (long-duration for 16 min 9 s or short-duration for 5 min 23 s). Participants in both conditions were instructed to watch short videos and read public articles for the same duration and then estimate the time duration of the tasks. Subsequently, participants completed a questionnaire about their estimated and actual weekly short video use and problematic short watching levels. The results showed that the impact of task duration on time perception was significant. Task type had no significant impact on time perception, with no notable difference in time estimation between conditions involving watching short videos and reading. The interaction between time duration and task type was not significant. Additionally, problematic short video watching and the estimated weekly short video use were not significantly related to time distortion. This study contributes to empirical research on time distortion while watching short videos, providing insights for expanding theoretical models of addictive behaviors and interventions for problematic short video use. Time series data are fundamental for analyzing temporal dynamics and patterns, enabling researchers and practitioners to model, forecast, and support decision-making across a wide range of domains, such as finance, climate science, environmental studies, and signal processing. In the context of high-dimensional time series, the Vector Autoregressive model (VAR) is widely used, wherein each variable is modeled as a linear combination of lagged values of all variables in the system. However, the traditional VAR framework relies on the assumption of stationarity, which states that the autoregressive coefficients remain constant over time. Unfortunately, this assumption often fails in practice, especially in systems subject to structural breaks or evolving temporal dynamics. The Time-Varying Vector Autoregressive (TV-VAR) model has been developed to address this limitation, allowing model parameters to vary over time and thereby offering greater flexibility in capturing non-stationary behavior. In this study, we propose an enhanced modeling approach for the TV-VAR framework by incorporating minimization solvers in generalized additive models and one-sided kernel smoothing techniques. The effectiveness of the proposed methodology is assessed using simulations based on non-homogeneous Markov chains, accompanied by a detailed discussion of its advantages and limitations. Finally, we illustrate the practical utility of our approach using an application to real-world financial data. Full article

Binge-watching has become a dominant mode of media consumption, yet its psychological underpinnings remain insufficiently explored. This study investigates the influence of dark triad personality traits, sociodemographic factors, and TV series preferences on binge-watching behavior. A Portuguese version of the Binge-Watching Engagement and Symptoms Questionnaire (BWESQ) was validated using a confirmatory factor analysis (CFA), demonstrating strong psychometric properties. Measurement invariance was confirmed across genders through a multigroup CFA, testing configural, metric, scalar, and error variance levels. Model reliability, convergent validity, and discriminant validity were assessed using Cronbach’s alpha, composite reliability, and the average variance extracted (AVE). Multiple linear regression analyses identified significant predictors of binge-watching, including gender, age, professional status, TV series preferences, Machiavellianism, and psychopathy. These findings underscore the role of personality traits and demographic factors in shaping binge-watching behavior, offering insights that may inform psychological interventions to prevent excessive or problematic viewing patterns. Conversations with Friends by Sally Rooney depicts a love story between Frances, a Dublin college student, and Nick, a married, middle-class actor. The author creatively integrates film narrative and digital media narrative into the novel, thus employing different media for expression. When the novel was successfully adapted into a TV series in 2022, fan participation, media interviews, and actors’ interpretations fleshed out the characters, extending the process of cross-media remediation. Frances gradually accomplishes self-construal in the process of cross-media narrative, searching for the individual self, relational self, and collective self. In this article, Frances’ individual, collective, and relational selves are analyzed by exploring the effects of film and digital media narrative and cross-media remediation. We develop new perspectives on the interaction of multiple media and the intersection of narrative techniques. In breaking down the barriers between the text and the real world, millennials’ breakups, adherence to communist ideals, and awakening of female consciousness are well depicted. Due to Rooney’s cross-media narrative, the novel’s features could also bring the readers a film-like experience, thus making it suitable for visual adaptation. Full article

Religious symbols and figures are gaining new life in popular culture. Reinterpretations of symbols rooted in the visual arts tradition are appearing in film, TV series and short audiovisual forms presented on the Internet, especially on social media. This also applies to angels, to which the author’s research would be devoted. This article discusses images of “secular angels”, decontextualized religious symbols, popularized throughout the 20th and 21st centuries in the visual media of Western culture. From the rich research material, the most characteristic images are selected for discussion and interpretation and subjected to interpretation in the spirit of discourse analysis. The images of modern “angels” in the texts of popular culture refer not so much to their biblical prototypes, but to the moral condition of man in consumerist, individualistic societies focused on living for pleasure. Film, TV series and Internet images of “angels” also show the controversies and social problems (such as racism) faced by contemporary Western societies. Full article

This study conducts a Critical Discourse Analysis of the masculinities of male characters in Doraemon, a famous Japanese manga series. It explores the masculinities in Doraemon from three perspectives by utilising the following Critical Discourse Analysis framework: text, process and society. Five male characters in Doraemon were selected as the main research objects. Firstly, the text analysis of the male characters in terms of their appearances, characteristics, behaviours and values reveals major masculine traits such as the maintenance of patriarchy, the pursuit and yearning for fame and fortune, competition and aggression. Analysing these masculinities can help remind audiences and consumers to be cautious about works that seemingly do not convey gender stereotypes to viewers. The process analysis identifies corresponding masculinities of the creator of Doraemon through his life experiences. Innovative spirit led him to create characters and manga that could both reflect and confront social reality and promote new gender concepts and ideas that were different from the mainstream at the time. The social analysis of Doraemon attributes the masculinities in the manga to Japanese culture, which has been deeply influenced by the culture of the salaryman, Confucianism, androcentrism and Bushido. For audiences in Japan, anime is a way of spreading and consolidating traditional Japanese cultural ideas, at the same time provoking reflection on whether these inherent gender roles are reasonable and should be perpetuated in the contemporary era. For audiences outside of Japan, this manga and cartoon is equivalent to a typical case of the export and recreation of Japanese culture to the world. This study conveys gender equality values, especially in children’s TV programmes. Full article

Tanacetum vulgare L. has been traditionally applied as a remedy for headaches, rheumatism, digestion, respiratory and neurological problems, and other medical conditions. However, the literature data on its effects on cognitive function are scarce. The aim of the present work was to evaluate the effects of two doses of T. vulgare alcohol extract on cognitive functions, hippocampal brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) expression, and organ toxicity in rats. Rats were treated with T. vulgare 200 mg/kg (TV 200) and 1000 mg/kg (TV 1000) for 28 days. After one week of pre-treatment, the animals were subjected to a series of tests. We found that in the active avoidance test, only TV 200 improved learning and memory, while in the passive avoidance test, both doses facilitated these processes. In addition, the two doses enhanced spatial memory. In the elevated plus maze test, only the higher dose of TV 1000 resulted in anxiolytic-like behavior. Both doses of the extract significantly increased the hippocampal expression of BDNF. We suggest that increased neurotrophic factor expression could be one of the important mechanisms underlying the cognition-enhancing effects of T. vulgare extract. Full article

Design floods are traditionally estimated based on the at-site annual maximum flood series, including historical information of hydraulic structures. Nevertheless, the construction and operation of upstream reservoirs undermine the assumption of stationarity in the downstream flood data series. This paper investigates non-stationary design flood estimation considering historical information from the Three Gorges Reservoir (TGR) in the Yangtze River. Based on the property that the distribution function of a continuous random variable increases monotonically, we proposed a novel time-varying P-III distribution coupled with the curve fitting method (referred to as the Tv-P3/CF model) to estimate design floods in the TGR operation period, and we comparatively studied the reservoir indices and parameter estimation methods. The results indicate that: (1) The modified reservoir index used as a covariate can effectively capture the non-stationary characteristics of the flood series; (2) The Tv-P3/CF model emphasizes the fitness of historical information, yielding superior results compared to time-varying P-III distribution estimated by the maximum likelihood method; (3) Compared to the original design values, the 1000-year design peak discharge Qm and 3-day and 7-day flood volumes in the TGR operation period are reduced by approximately 20%, while the 15-day and 30-day flood volumes are reduced by about 16%; (4) The flood-limited water level of the TGR can be raised from 145 m to 154 m, which can annually generate 0.32 billion kW h more hydropower (or increase by 6.8%) during flood season without increasing flood prevention risks. Synthetic aperture radar (SAR) has been extensively applied in remote sensing applications. Nevertheless, it is a challenge to process and interpret SAR images. The key to interpreting SAR images lies in transforming them into other forms of remote sensing images to extract valuable hidden remote sensing information. Currently, the conversion of SAR images to optical images produces low-quality results and incomplete spectral information. To address these problems, an end-to-end network model, S2MS-GAN, is proposed for converting SAR images into multispectral images. In this process, to tackle the issues of noise and image generation quality, a TV-BM3D module is introduced into the generator model. Through TV regularization, block-matching, and 3D filtering, these two modules can preserve the edges and reduce the speckle noise in SAR images. In addition, spectral attention is added to improve the spectral features of the generated MS images. Furthermore, we construct a very high-resolution SAR-to-MS image dataset, S2MS-HR, with a spatial resolution of 0.3 m, which is currently the most comprehensive dataset available for high-resolution SAR-to-MS image interpretation. Finally, a series of experiments are conducted on the relevant dataset. Both quantitative and qualitative evaluations demonstrate that our method outperforms several state-of-the-art models in translation performance. The solution effectively facilitates high-quality transitions of SAR images across different types. Full article

This research examines the portrayal of (non)motherhood in television series from 2016 to 2022. The title, “(Un)being a Mother”, was deliberately chosen for its polysemic nature, facilitating an exploration of the complexities of motherhood, its absence, and the implications for womanhood. The study thematically analyzes 15 television series from Hispanic, Italian, and Anglo-American cultures to reveal the diverse perspectives on motherhood. Utilizing the frameworks of Intensive Mothering, Good Mothering, Good Enough Mothering, and Non-Mothering (including both childless and childfree women), the research aims to illuminate representations of motherhood, variations in mothering paradigms, and the influence of cultural and geographical contexts. This study introduces an innovative methodological approach by investigating recurring themes of (non)motherhood across different cultural productions, incorporating insights from media sociology, gender media studies, anthropology, and ethnographic media research for a comprehensive understanding of the subject. This article advances the research on the intelligent monitoring and control of helicopter turboshaft engines in onboard conditions. The proposed neural network system for anomaly prediction functions as a module within the helicopter turboshaft engine monitoring and control expert system. A SARIMAX-based preprocessor model was developed to determine autocorrelation and partial autocorrelation in training data, accounting for dynamic changes and external factors, achieving a prediction accuracy of up to 97.9%. A modified LSTM-based predictor model with Dropout and Dense layers predicted sensor data, with a tested error margin of 0.218% for predicting the TV3-117 aircraft engine gas temperature values before the compressor turbine during one minute of helicopter flight. A reconstructor model restored missing time series values and replaced outliers with synthetic values, achieving up to 98.73% accuracy. An anomaly detector model using the concept of dissonance successfully identified two anomalies: a sensor malfunction and a sharp temperature drop within two minutes of sensor activity, with type I and II errors below 1.12 and 1.01% and a detection time under 1.611 s. The system’s AUC-ROC value of 0.818 confirms its strong ability to differentiate between normal and anomalous data, ensuring reliable and accurate anomaly detection. The limitations involve the dependency on the quality of data from onboard sensors, affected by malfunctions or noise, with the LSTM network’s accuracy (up to 97.9%) varying with helicopter conditions, and the model’s high computational demand potentially limiting real-time use in resource-constrained environments. A partial ichthyosaur skeleton from the Toarcian (Lower Jurassic) bituminous shales of the ‘Schistes Carton’ unit of southern Luxembourg is described and illustrated. In addition, associated remnant soft tissues are analyzed using a combination of imaging and molecular techniques. The fossil (MNHNL TV344) comprises scattered appendicular elements, together with a consecutive series of semi-articulated vertebrae surrounded by extensive soft-tissue remains. We conclude that TV344 represents a skeletally immature individual (possibly of the genus Stenopterygius) and that the soft parts primarily consist of fossilized skin, including the epidermis (with embedded melanophore pigment cells and melanosome organelles) and dermis. Ground sections of dorsal ribs display cortical microstructures reminiscent of lines of arrested growth (LAGs), providing an opportunity for a tentative age determination of the animal at the time of death (>3 years). It is further inferred that the exceptional preservation of TV344 was facilitated by seafloor dysoxia/anoxia with periodical intervals of oxygenation, which triggered phosphatization and the subsequent formation of a carbonate concretion.
