Camellia oleifera, a woody oilseed species endemic to China, often experiences growth constraints due to seasonal drought. This study investigates the coordinated regulation of photosynthetic traits, stomatal behavior, and hormone responses during drought–rehydration cycles in two cultivars with contrasting drought resistance: ‘CL53’ (tolerant) and ‘CL40’ (sensitive). Photosynthetic inhibition resulted from both stomatal and non-stomatal limitations, with cultivar-specific differences. After 28 days of drought, the net photosynthetic rate (Pn) declined by 26.6% in CL53 and 32.6% in CL40. A stable intercellular CO2 concentration (Ci) in CL53 indicated superior mesophyll integrity and antioxidant capacity. CL53 showed rapid Pn recovery and photosynthetic compensation post-rehydration, in contrast to CL40. Drought triggered extensive stomatal closure; >98% reopened upon rehydration, though the total stomatal pore area remained reduced. Abscisic acid (ABA) accumulation was greater in CL40, contributing to stomatal closure and Pn suppression. CL53 exhibited faster ABA degradation and gibberellin (GA3) recovery, promoting photosynthetic restoration. ABA negatively correlated with Pn, transpiration rate (Tr), stomatal conductance (Gs), and Ci, but positively with stomatal limitation (Ls). Water use efficiency (WUE) displayed a parabolic response to ABA, differing by cultivar. This integrative analysis highlights a coordinated photosynthesis–stomata–hormone network underlying drought adaptation and informs selection strategies for drought-resilient cultivars and precision irrigation. Influence of Various Cooking Methods on Selenium Concentrations in Commonly Consumed Seafood Species in Thailand

Selenium (Se) is an important trace element in our body; however, food composition data remain limited due to analytical challenges and interferences. Seafood, abundant in Thailand, is recognized as a rich source of Se. This study aimed to expand knowledge on Se content in seafood prepared using traditional Thai cooking methods. Twenty seafood species were selected and prepared by boiling, frying, and grilling. Inductively Coupled Plasma–Triple Quadrupole–Mass Spectrometry (ICP-MS/MS) was used to analyze total Se contents in selected seafood species. Results revealed significant variation in Se content across species and cooking methods. The Indo-Pacific horseshoe crab showed the highest Se concentration, with fried samples reaching 193.9 μg/100 g. Se concentrations were in the range of 8.6–155.5 μg/100 g (fresh), 14.3–106.6 μg/100 g (boiled), 17.3–193.9 μg/100 g (fried), and 7.3–160.1 μg/100 g (grilled). Results found significant effects of species and cooking method on Se content (p < 0.05). Fried seafood exhibited the highest estimated marginal mean Se concentration (a 78.8 μg/100 g edible portion), significantly higher than other methods. True retention (%TR) of Se ranged from 40.4% to 100%, depending on species and method. Bigfin reef squid, wedge shell, and silver pomfret showed the highest %TR (100%), while splendid squid exhibited the lowest (52.5%). Significant interaction effects on %TR were also observed (p < 0.05). Fried seafood had the highest mean %TR (88.8%), followed by grilled (82.1%) and boiled (79.7%). These findings highlight the effects of both species and cooking method on Se retention, emphasizing the nutritional value of selected seafood in preserving bioavailable Se after cooking. Tricuspid regurgitation (TR) is a well-recognized factor contributing to adverse outcomes and mortality. Recent developments in transcatheter valve repair techniques, with the emergence of tricuspid transcatheter edge-to-edge repair (TEER) devices, have altered the treatment algorithm of TR and now offer a safe and feasible alternative for the effective management of the disease and an improvement in patient symptoms. Evidence from large studies and registries showcases the benefit of tricuspid interventions in terms of heart failure hospitalization and quality of life; however, most studies do not report a significant benefit in terms of hard outcomes. Even though longer-term follow-up may be needed to identify such differences, it is important to also identify distinct patient phenotypes that would benefit the most from such interventions, moving from pure anatomical criteria to an overall assessment of the patient’s clinical status. Therefore, the aim of this review is to provide updates on potential moderators of the effect of tricuspid TEER, focusing on novel anatomical criteria, right cardiac function, and renal physiology, in order to guide patient selection and provide an insightful discussion on the optimal patient phenotype for future trial design. The emergence of electric vehicles (EVs) has brought specific risks, including the possibility of fires or explosions resulting from mechanical, thermal, or electrical failures, which can lead to thermal runaway (TR). There is a great lack of knowledge about how to act safely in this type of fire. This study carried out two full-scale fire experiments on electric vehicles to investigate response strategies to electric vehicle fires caused by thermal runaway. Centro Zaragoza provided technical advice for these tests, so that they could be carried out safely, controlling the risks. This advice has allowed Centro Zaragoza to analyze different response strategies to the fires in electric vehicles caused by thermal runaway. On the other hand, the propagation patterns of thermal runaway fires in electric vehicles were investigated. The early-phase effectiveness of fire blankets and other extinguishing measures was tested, and the temperature distributions inside the vehicle and the type of fire generated were measured. The results showed that fire blankets successfully extinguished flames by cutting off the oxygen supply. These findings contribute to the development of effective strategies for responding to electric vehicle fires, enabling the establishment of good practice for fire suppression in electric vehicles and their batteries. Background/Objectives: Thyroid nodules are commonly found through sensitive imaging methods like ultrasonography. While most nodules are benign and asymptomatic, certain characteristics may indicate malignancy, prompting fine needle aspiration biopsy. Factors like age and gender affect cancer risk, complicating ultrasound-based risk systems. We aimed to determine whether the cytological malignancy rate of thyroid nodules could be adjusted for several clinical parameters. Methods: Data from patients aged 18 and above with thyroid nodules assessed via fine needle aspiration (FNA) were retrospectively reviewed. Malignancy classification was based on cytopathology and histopathology results. The study examined how various clinical parameters, adjusted for the ACR TI-RADS category, affected thyroid nodule malignancy rates, including age, sex, Body Mass Index (BMI), nodule size, presence of autoimmunity, and thyroxine therapy. Additionally, we analyzed the performance of ACR TI-RADS in predicting malignant cytology across different age subgroups of thyroid nodules. Results: The study included 1128 thyroid nodules from 1001 adult patients, with a median age of 48 years and predominantly female (76.68%). Malignancy rates varied across ACR TI-RADS categories, with higher rates associated with larger nodules and younger age groups. Age emerged as a significant predictor of malignancy, with a consistent decrease in the odds ratio for malignant cytology with advancing age across all ACR TI-RADS categories, indicating its potential utility in risk assessment alongside nodule size and sex. Conclusions: Raising the size threshold for recommending FNA of TR3-3 nodules and incorporating patients’ age and gender into the evaluation process could enhance the system’s accuracy in assessing thyroid nodules and guiding clinical management decisions. Trust in Traditional Thai Medicine (TTM) among Thai people has been reduced due to a lack of objective standards and the susceptibility of the general population to false information. The emergence of generative artificial intelligence (Gen AI) has significantly impacted various industries, including traditional medicine. However, previous Gen AI models have primarily focused on prescription generation based on Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), leaving TTM unexplored. To address this gap, we propose a novel fast-learning fine-tuned language model fortified with TTM knowledge. We utilized textual data from two TTM textbooks, Wat Ratcha-orasaram Ratchaworawihan (WRO), and Tamra Osot Phra Narai (NR), to fine-tune Unsloth’s Gemma-2 with 9 billion parameters. We developed two specialized TTM tasks: treatment prediction (TrP) and herbal recipe generation (HRG). The TrP and HRG models achieved precision, recall, and F1 scores of 26.54%, 28.14%, and 24.00%, and 32.51%, 24.42%, and 24.84%, respectively. Performance evaluation against TCM-based generative models showed comparable precision, recall, and F1 results with a smaller knowledge corpus. We further addressed the challenges of utilizing Thai, a low-resource and linguistically complex language. Unlike English or Chinese, Thai lacks explicit sentence boundary markers and employs an abugida writing system without spaces between words, complicating text segmentation and generation. These characteristics pose significant difficulties for machine understanding and limit model accuracy. Despite these obstacles, our work establishes a foundation for further development of AI-assisted TTM applications and highlights both the opportunities and challenges in applying language models to traditional medicine knowledge systems in Thai language contexts. Myofascial pain syndrome (MPS) is caused by trigger points (TrPs): hypersensitive spots in taut muscle bands that impair function and cause pain. Dry needling (DN) is a common treatment in humans, but evidence in horses is limited. This prospective, controlled study evaluated the effectiveness of DN in reducing TrP-related pain in the brachiocephalic muscle of horses. Of the 98 horses enrolled, 66 were allocated to a treatment group receiving weekly DN sessions for three weeks, while 32 were assigned to a control group with no intervention. Pain and function were assessed using pressure algometry, a numerical rating scale (NRS), a functional total test score (FTTS), and behavioral indicators including jump sign (JS), equine pain face (EPF), and local twitch responses (LTRs). Assessments were performed at baseline and at 0, 4, 24, and 72 h post-intervention. Results indicate a significant increase in pressure pain thresholds (p < 0.001), especially after the second and third sessions. Both NRS and FTTS improved significantly over time (p < 0.001), and LTRs progressively decreased. EPF and JS showed minimal variation. These results support the use of DN to reduce local muscle pain and improve function in horses with TrPs. Further robust studies are warranted to refine protocols and investigate long-term effects. Despite being highly prevalent among women of reproductive age, the psychological dimensions of iron deficiency anemia (IDA) often go unrecognized. While the hematological consequences of IDA are well established, emerging evidence suggests that it may also adversely affect emotional processing, mental health, and overall quality of life. This study aimed to systematically assess levels of alexithymia, anxiety, depressive symptoms, and quality of life in women diagnosed with IDA compared to age-matched healthy controls. A total of 151 women with confirmed IDA and 150 healthy controls were recruited. Participants underwent laboratory testing and completed validated questionnaires, including the Beck Depression Scale (BDS), State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI), WHOQOL-BREF-TR, and the Toronto Alexithymia Scale (TAS-20). Women with IDA demonstrated significantly higher alexithymia and anxiety scores and lower quality of life compared to controls. Within the IDA group, probable alexithymia was associated with more severe anemia parameters and poorer psychological outcomes. These findings indicate that IDA is not only a hematological disorder but also one with a substantial psychological burden. Recognizing and addressing these psychological dimensions in clinical practice is critical. A multidisciplinary management approach that integrates both hematological treatment and mental health interventions may be essential to improve overall patient outcomes among women with IDA. Plant microbiomes are vital for the growth and health of their host. Tree-associated microbiomes are shaped by multiple factors, of which the host is one of the key determinants. Whether different host genotypes affect the structure and diversity of the tissue-associated microbiome and how specific taxa enriched in different tree tissues are not yet well illustrated. Chinese fir (Cunninghamia lanceolata) is an important tree species for both economy and ecosystem in the subtropical regions of Asia. In this study, we investigated the tissue-specific fungal community structure and diversity of nine different Chinese fir genotypes (39 years) grown in the same field. With non-metric multidimensional scaling (NMDS) analysis, we revealed the divergence of the fungal community from rhizosphere soil (RS), fine roots (FRs), and thick roots (TRs). Through analysis with α-diversity metrics (Chao1, Shannon, Pielou, ACE, Good‘s coverage, PD-tree, Simpson, Sob), we confirmed the significant difference of the fungal community in RS, FR, and TR samples. Yet, the overall fungal community difference was not observed among nine genotypes for the same tissues (RS, FR, TR). The most abundant fungal genera were Russula in RS, Scytinostroma in FR, and Subulicystidium in TR. Functional prediction with FUNGuild analysis suggested that ectomycorrhizal fungi were commonly enriched in rhizosphere soil, while saprotroph–parasite and potentially pathogenic fungi were more abundant in root samples. Specifically, genotype N104 holds less ectomycorrhizal and pathogenic fungi in all tissues (RS, FR, TR) compared to other genotypes. Additionally, significant correlations of several endophytic fungal taxa (Scytinostroma, Neonothopanus, Lachnum) with the growth traits (tree height, diameter, stand volume) were observed. This addresses that the interaction between tree roots and the fungal community is a reflection of tree growth, supporting the “trade-off” hypothesis between growth and defense in forest trees. In summary, we revealed tissue-specific, as well as host genotype-specific and genotype-common characters of the structure and functions of their fungal communities. Full article

As lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) gain widespread use, detecting electrolyte–vapor emissions during early thermal runaway (TR) remains critical to ensuring battery safety; yet, it remains understudied. Gas sensors integrating oxide nanostructures offer a promising solution as they possess high sensitivity and fast response, enabling rapid detection of various gas-phase indicators of battery failure. Utilizing this approach, 3D ordered tin oxide (SnO2) nanostructures were synthesized using polystyrene sphere (PS) templates of varied diameters (200–1500 nm) and precursor concentrations (0.2–0.6 mol/L) to detect key electrolyte–vapors, especially ethyl methyl carbonate (EMC), released in the early stages of TR. The 3D ordered SnO2 nanostructures with ring- and nanonet-like morphologies, formed after PS template removal, were characterized, and the effects of template size and precursor concentration on their structure and sensing performance were investigated. Among various nanostructures of SnO2, nanonets achieved by a 1000 nm PS template and 0.4 mol/L precursor showed higher mesoporosity (~28 nm) and optimal EMC detection. At 210 °C, it detected 10 ppm EMC with a response of ~7.95 and response/recovery times of 14/17 s, achieving a 500 ppb detection limit alongside excellent reproducibility/stability. This study demonstrates that precise structural control of SnO2 nanostructures using templates enables sensitive EMC detection, providing an effective sensor-based strategy to enhance LIB safety. Maintenance techniques are fundamental in the context of the safe operation of continuous process installations, especially in electrical energy-transmission and/or -distribution substations. The operating conditions of power transformers are fundamental for the safe functioning of the electrical power system. Predictive maintenance consists of periodically monitoring the asset in use, in order to anticipate critical situations. This article proposes a methodology based on data science, machine learning and the Internet of Things (IoT), to track operational conditions over time and evaluate transformer aging. This characteristic is achieved with the development of a synchronization method for different databases and the construction of a model for estimating ambient temperatures using k-Nearest Neighbors. In this way, a history assessment is carried out with more consistency, given the environmental conditions faced by the equipment. The work evaluated data from three power transformers in different geographic locations, demonstrating the initial applicability of the method in identifying equipment aging. Transformer TR1 showed aging of 3.24×103%, followed by TR2 with 8.565×103% and TR3 showing 294.17×106% in the evaluated period of time. Full article

A Post-Hoc Analysis of Depressive Disorders in Patients with Type 2 Diabetes

Background/Objectives: This study is an investigation of the occurrence, remission and recurrence of major depressive disorders (MDDs) in adults with type 2 diabetes (T2DM). Methods: Interviews were conducted with individuals (N = 176) who met the criteria for MDD using the Structured Clinical Interview for the DSM-IV-TR (SCID). Results: N = 176 T2DM adults, with a mean (SD) age of 55.5 (10.4) years, 74% of whom were female and 62% were white, completed the Structured Clinical Interview for the DSM-IV-TR (SCID). A mean (SD) number of 1.8 (0.9) episodes of major depression (MDD) were recorded from birth to the date of interview, with a mean (SD) onset age of the first episode of 40.4 (15.9) years. Median (IQR) MDD episode duration was 13.9 (5.6–31.9) months and the median (IQR) cumulative lifetime exposure duration to MDD was 33 (12.9–63.1) months. Kaplan–Meier survival analysis along with the frailty model, to account for the correlation among multiple recurrences or remissions within a subject, indicated that the median first episode duration was shorter than the median second episode duration (14 vs. 37.9 months, p < 0.0001). Of those who had at least three episodes, the median second episode duration was shorter than the median third-episode duration (13.0 vs. 28.0 months, p = 0.006). The median recurrence time following first remission was significantly longer than the median recurrence time following second remission (138.0 vs. 80.6 months, p = 0.02). Conclusions: These results document that clinical depression is recurrent in adults with T2DM. Moreover, depressive episodes in individuals with T2DM are persistent well beyond episode durations observed in the general population. Full article

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Muscle Dysmorphia and Anabolic Steroid-Related Psychopathology: A Randomized Controlled Trial

Background/Objectives: Muscle dysmorphia (MD), a subtype of body dysmorphic disorder, is prevalent among males who engage in the non-medical use of anabolic–androgenic steroids (AASs) and performance-enhancing drugs (PEDs). These individuals often experience severe psychopathology, including mood instability, compulsivity, and a distorted body image. Despite its clinical severity, no randomized controlled trials (RCTs) have evaluated structured psychological treatments in this subgroup. This study aimed to assess the efficacy of a manualized cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) protocol in reducing MD symptoms and associated psychological distress among male steroid users. Results: Participants in the CBT group showed significant reductions in MD symptoms from the baseline to post-treatment (MDDI: p < 0.001, d = 1.12), with gains sustained at follow-up. Large effect sizes were also observed in secondary outcomes including depressive symptoms (PHQ-9: d = 0.98), psychological distress (K10: d = 0.93), disordered eating (EDE-Q: d = 0.74), and exercise addiction (EAI: d = 1.07). No significant changes were observed in the control group. Significant group × time interactions were found for all outcomes (all p < 0.01), indicating CBT’s specific efficacy. Discussion: This study provides the first RCT evidence that CBT significantly reduces both core MD symptoms and steroid-related psychopathology in men engaged in AAS/PED misuse. Improvements extended to mood, body image perception, and compulsive exercise behaviors. These findings support CBT’s transdiagnostic applicability in addressing both the cognitive–behavioral and affective dimensions of MD. Materials and Methods: In this parallel-group, open-label RCT, 59 male gym-goers with DSM-5-TR diagnoses of MD and a history of AAS/PED use were randomized to either a 12-week CBT intervention (n = 30) or a waitlist control group (n = 29). CBT sessions were delivered weekly online and targeted distorted muscularity beliefs, compulsive behaviors, and emotional dysregulation. Primary and secondary outcomes—Muscle Dysmorphic Disorder Inventory (MDDI), PHQ-9, K10, EDE-Q, EAI, and BIG—were assessed at the baseline, post-treatment, and 3-month follow-up. A repeated-measures ANOVA and paired t-tests were used to analyze time × group interactions. Conclusions: CBT offers an effective, scalable intervention for individuals with muscle dysmorphia complicated by anabolic steroid use. It promotes broad psychological improvement and may serve as a first-line treatment option in high-risk male fitness populations. Future studies should examine long-term outcomes and investigate implementation in diverse clinical and cultural contexts. Full article

Cold environments challenge the structural and functional integrity of membrane proteins, requiring specialized adaptations to maintain activity under low thermal energy. Here, we investigate the molecular basis of cold tolerance in the peptide transporter PepT1 from the Antarctic icefish (Chionodraco hamatus, ChPepT1) using molecular dynamics simulations, binding free energy calculations (MM/GBSA), and dynamic network analysis. We compare ChPepT1 to its human ortholog (hPepT1), a non-cold-adapted variant, to reveal key features enabling psychrophilic function. Our simulations show that ChPepT1 displays enhanced global flexibility, particularly in domains adjacent to the substrate-binding site and the C-terminal domain (CTD). While hPepT1 loses substrate binding affinity as temperature increases, ChPepT1 maintains stable peptide interactions across a broad thermal range. This thermodynamic buffering results from temperature-sensitive rearrangement of hydrogen bond networks and more dynamic lipid interactions. Importantly, we identify a temperature-responsive segment (TRS, residues 660–670) within the proximal CTD that undergoes an α-helix to coil transition, modulating long-range coupling with transmembrane helices. Dynamic cross-correlation analyses further suggest that ChPepT1, unlike hPepT1, reorganizes its interdomain communication in response to temperature shifts. Our findings suggest that cold tolerance in ChPepT1 arises from a combination of structural flexibility, resilient substrate binding, and temperature-sensitive interdomain dynamics. These results provide new mechanistic insight into thermal adaptation in membrane transporters and offer a framework for engineering proteins with enhanced functionality in extreme environments.
