Monacha cartusiana (O. F. Müller, 1774), native to the Mediterranean region and Europe, is a terrestrial gastropod recognized as a highly destructive agricultural pest that causes significant damage to crop plants, fruit trees, vegetables, ornamentals, and natural ecosystems. Despite its broad geographic distribution, the evolutionary history and phylogeographic relationships of M. cartusiana populations remain globally unexplored. This study reports the first molecularly confirmed record of M. cartusiana in Pakistan and investigates its genetic diversity and phylogeographic structure within a global context using mitochondrial markers. After morphological identification, genomic DNA was extracted from collected specimens using the CTAB method, followed by amplification and sequencing of the mitochondrial COI and 16S rRNA genes. The resulting sequences were subsequently analyzed using DnaSP and PopART software to estimate genetic diversity, perform neutrality tests, and construct haplotype networks. Published sequences of M. cartusiana retrieved from GenBank were incorporated to provide a global comparative framework. The COI dataset (555 bp) revealed 52 haplotypes, whereas the 16S rRNA dataset (269 bp) identified 14 haplotypes across global populations. High haplotype diversity (Hd = 0.946 for COI; Hd = 0.831 for 16S rRNA) and moderate nucleotide diversity (π = 0.010 for COI; π = 0.01253 for 16S rRNA) indicated substantial genetic variability within the species. Neutrality tests produced negative and insignificant values for Tajima’s D for COI and significant values for 16S rRNA (−1.428 for COI; −0.20586 for 16S rRNA) and Fu’s Fs (−29.776 for COI; −1.263 for 16S rRNA), suggesting historical population expansion. Phylogenetic reconstruction and haplotype network analyses identified two major clades (Clade A and Clade B), reflecting genetic relationships among populations from different geographic regions. AMOVA based on COI and 16S rRNA sequences revealed significant population structuring, with 29.98–51.30% of the total genetic variation occurring among populations and high fixation indices (FST = 0.299–0.51398, p = 0.001), indicating pronounced genetic differentiation and restricted gene flow. Pairwise FST analyses indicated that the Pakistani population is most closely related to populations from Italy and Central Europe, suggesting a closer genetic affinity with Southern or Central European populations. However, FST alone does not allow definitive inference of introduction directionality, and additional analyses would be required to robustly identify the source population. Overall, this study provides the first comprehensive molecular and phylogeographic assessment of the M. cartusiana species from Pakistan within a global context. These findings contribute important baseline data for understanding the evolutionary dynamics, dispersal history, and population connectivity of this economically important pest species. The pronounced genetic differentiation among populations and the suggested genetic affinity of the Pakistani population with European lineages have direct implications for biosecurity monitoring, invasion pathway tracing, and targeted pest management strategies. Future research integrating nuclear markers with the mitochondrial data presented here will be essential for a more complete understanding of gene flow and local adaptation in this species. Understanding the climate-driven range dynamics of the oriental hornet (Vespa orientalis) is essential for ecological risk assessment and biodiversity management. This study utilized Maximum Entropy (MaxEnt) modeling to estimate current and future (2050) habitat suitability across the Western Palearctic. The model demonstrated strong predictive performance, yielding a mean cross-validation AUC of 0.95 ± 0.01 and a TSS of 0.78 ± 0.02, indicating high stability and discriminatory capacity. Jackknife analysis and response curves identified temperature annual range (bio7) and annual precipitation (bio12) as the primary environmental drivers. The species exhibits a distinct preference for moderate thermal variability and balanced moisture regimes, while extreme summer heat (bio5) and warm winter conditions (bio11) impose significant constraints. Current projections identify a high-suitability core concentrated within the Mediterranean basin. By mid-century, projections indicate a spatial reorganization marked by localized gains mainly in the eastern part of the study region alongside suitability losses across North Africa and parts of southern Europe. Multivariate Environmental Similarity Surface (MESS) analysis confirmed high model transferability across most expansion zones, despite increased uncertainty in hyper-arid and high-altitude regions. These findings underscore the dynamic nature of the V. orientalis climatic niche and provide a critical baseline for proactive biosecurity and monitoring in emerging high-risk regions. Given the global decline in Hymenoptera diversity, this study provides timely insights into species-specific responses to climate change, supporting broader efforts in biodiversity conservation and ecological risk assessment. Gender-based violence (GBV) in higher education is increasingly recognized as a systemic problem across offline and online contexts, yet the pathways linking gender-related attitudes, victimization, and formal help-seeking remain insufficiently understood in Southern Europe. This study examined whether Sexual Harassment/Assault and Coercive Control mediate associations between ambivalent sexism, Acceptance of Dating Violence, Perceived Behavioral Control, and Formal Help-Seeking Intentions among women students in Greek higher education. An anonymous online survey was completed by 550 women students, and structural equation modeling tested direct, mediated, and multi-group associations by age, education level, and perceived financial situation. Coercive Control was the strongest predictor of Formal Help-Seeking Intentions, followed by Acceptance of Dating Violence and Perceived Behavioral Control, whereas Hostile and Benevolent Sexism had no significant direct effects. Mediation analyses showed that Coercive Control, rather than Sexual Harassment/Assault, provided the more consistent pathway to help-seeking intentions. Multi-group analyses indicated broadly stable patterns, with selected differences by age, education, and financial situation. The findings suggest that university GBV policies should move beyond incident-based responses, address patterned Coercive Control, and improve students’ perceived ability to access formal support services. This research paper examines the spatial and time variation of demographic dependency in Europe in a 30-year horizon of the evolution of the demographic dividend regarding the economic dependency ratio (ADR1). We used the Curve Fit Forecast tool to estimate the trends of ADR1 in each of the EU Member States using data on Eurostat projections and a sophisticated geostatistical analysis tool developed in ArcGIS Pro 3.2.2. The findings indicate that the dependency in all countries has increased significantly in a statistically significant manner as the Gompertz function has appeared as the best curve in a third of the cases. It is an S-shaped asymptotic behaviour of this function that effectively describes the nonlinear patterns of acceleration and saturation of demographic ageing. As indicated in the analysis, the European regions are increasingly moving apart, with the southern and eastern nations such as Romania demonstrating the most alarming decline in ADR1. These trends highlight the need to reform labour market policies and social protection mechanisms to an ageing population. The paper combines the curve-fitting, descriptive statistics (median, skewness, interquartile range (IQR)) with time clustering (value, correlation, and Fourier) to provide an effective, replicable approach to early warning and policy prioritisation. Overall, the results highlight the importance of integrating predictive spatial modelling and demographic economics to support anticipatory and evidence-based policy decisions. The proposed approach proves to be a robust and transferable framework, applicable to a wide range of socio-economic phenomena characterised by inertia and structural change. Future research should extend the analysis to subnational levels, incorporate additional explanatory variables, and develop scenario-based simulations, including multivariate Gompertz-type models, to further enhance both predictive accuracy and policy relevance in the context of emerging structural labour scarcity. This dataset presents results of a study on Pipunculidae and Psilidae (Diptera) conducted in 2018–2024 across eight regions of European Russia. A total of 87 localities were surveyed. In total, 1358 specimens were reliably identified, including 1122 Pipunculidae and 236 Psilidae, representing 102 species (79 and 23 species, respectively). Of these, 397 specimens were females (29.2%). For most of the studied regions, all recorded species represent new records for their faunas. In the Republic of Mordovia, 68 species of Pipunculidae and 18 species of Psilidae are reported as new to the regional fauna. These data supplement previously published species lists for these families. Dorylomorpha clavipes and Dorylomorpha sachalinensis are recorded for the first time in the European part of Russia and in Europe as a whole. Previously, Dorylomorpha clavipes had been reported only from the southern Russian Far East, while Dorylomorpha sachalinensis was known exclusively from Sakhalin Island. The highest abundance among the examined material was observed for four species: Tomosvaryella minuscula (Pipunculidae)—288 specimens; Tomosvaryella sylvatica (Pipunculidae)—216; Dasydorylas holosericeus (Pipunculidae)—116; and Chamaepsila nigricornis (Psilidae)—102. Yellow pan traps were used at 69 localities and yielded 63 species and 590 specimens. Malaise traps were deployed at 11 localities and yielded 72 species based on 721 specimens. The highest species richness and specimen abundance were recorded in edge habitats of pine forests and in forest glades along lake shores. Full article

This study revises the genus Cyanoboletus (Boletaceae) in the Mediterranean Basin, integrating single-locus and multi-locus phylogenetic analyses (ITS, LSU, tef1-α, and rpb2), morphological characterisation, ecology, and arsenic accumulation in basidiomes. Morphological descriptions (including a new form, Cyanoboletus mediterraneensis f. pallidus), comprehensive sampling, type studies, biogeography, macro- and microphotographs, an identification key, and a historical overview of the nomenclatural issues surrounding C. pulverulentus, C. poikilochromus, and C. mediterraneensis are given. An epitype collection is designated for C. pulverulentus. A new method to measure spore suprahilar depression has been proposed, which allowed more clear morphological separation between C. mediterraneensis and C. pulverulentus. This method may prove useful for species delimitation in other fungal groups that have asymmetric basidiospores. Additionally, we generated a new ITS sequence of the C. sinopulverulentus holotype and inferred its conspecificity with the later described C. flavocontextus. Furthermore, notes on the taxonomy of Boletus gabretae are presented, and its placement in the genus Neoboletus is suggested. Cyanoboletus is confirmed as a strongly supported generic clade encompassing 21 monophyletic species-level clades, 14 of which represent known species, and seven are undescribed taxa. The synonymy of Cupreoboletus with Cyanoboletus is also verified. This publication provides the tools to delimit Cyanoboletus species that have important conservation value, which can be used by conservationists, ecologists, and citizen scientists. It also highlights species-specific arsenic hyperaccumulation in C. pulverulentus, contributing to a better understanding of fungal metal uptake. Our study indicates that within Cyanoboletus, only C. pulverulentus demonstrates this characteristic and is the only known member of Boletales that possesses a high arsenic accumulation ability. Background: Vancomycin-resistant Enterococcus (VRE) bacteremia represents a major therapeutic and epidemiological challenge, particularly in regions with high antimicrobial resistance rates such as Southern Europe. Longitudinal local data are essential to guide infection control and antimicrobial stewardship strategies. This study aimed to evaluate temporal trends in incidence, management, and mortality of VRE bacteremia in a tertiary care center in Greece over a six-year period, including comparison before and after the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic. Methods: This retrospective observational study included adult patients with VRE bacteremia at the University Hospital of Heraklion, Greece, from 2018 to 2023. Demographic and clinical data, such as the Pitt Bacteremia Index (PBI), as well as microbiological, and treatment data were collected from patient records. Incidence was calculated per 10,000 patient-days. Comparisons were performed between survivors and non-survivors and between pre- and post-COVID-19 eras. Multivariate regression analysis was used to identify predictors of in-hospital mortality. Results: A total of 96 patients were included (mean age 68.6 ± 14.5 years; 56.3% male). The incidence of VRE bacteremia increased more than five-fold during the study period, from 0.242 cases per 10,000 patient-days in 2018 to a peak of 1.344 per 10,000 patient-days in 2022, remaining elevated in 2023 (1.001 per 10,000 patient-days). The overall in-hospital mortality was 54.2%. Non-survivors had significantly higher PBI scores compared to survivors (median 2.5 vs. 0, p = 0.005). In the multivariate analysis, higher PBI was independently associated with in-hospital mortality [odds ratio: 1.449 (95% confidence intervals: 1.166–1.801)]. Appropriate empirical therapy was administered in 41.7% of cases and was not significantly associated with survival. Post-COVID-19 patients were older (69.9 vs. 61.4 years, p = 0.0365), and antimicrobial regimens were more frequently adjusted according to susceptibility testing (55.7% vs. 18.2%, p = 0.0141), but mortality did not significantly differ between periods. Conclusion: VRE bacteremia incidence increased dramatically over the six-year study period in our tertiary center, with persistently high mortality exceeding 50%. Severity of illness at the diagnosis of bacteremia, as measured by the PBI, was an independent predictor of in-hospital mortality. Strengthened infection prevention measures, optimized antimicrobial stewardship, and early aggressive management are urgently needed to mitigate the growing burden of VRE bacteremia. Full article

Exposure to airborne pollen allergens is a major trigger of respiratory allergy, whose prevalence continues to rise throughout Europe. In southern Portugal, the Mediterranean climate and extensive vegetation diversity promote high pollen loads, particularly from the Amaranthaceae family. This retrospective observational study aimed to characterise the sensitisation profiles of patients with positive skin prick tests (SPTs) to Chenopodium album and/or Salsola kali, the dominant Amaranthaceae species in the region. Data from 346 patients were analysed, including demographic and clinical characteristics, SPT results, and specific IgE sensitisation to molecular allergens. Of these, 35% were positive for C. album only, 13% for S. kali only, and 51% for both. In molecular testing, 54% of S. kali-sensitised patients were positive to Sal k 1, whereas only 4% of C. album-sensitised patients were positive to Che a 1. Sensitisation to panallergens such as profilins and Ole e 1-like proteins was frequent, suggesting extensive IgE cross-reactivity between these taxa. A significant correlation in wheal size (r = 0.53, p < 0.0001) further supports shared allergenic determinants. Despite higher SPT positivity to C. album, S. kali is likely the predominant sensitising source in this population. These findings highlight the importance of molecular-based diagnostics to distinguish genuine sensitisation from cross-reactivity in Mediterranean settings. Full article

The latest Cretaceous saw the final diversification of dinosaurs before the K/Pg extinction. Discussions of end-Cretaceous dinosaur diversity have focused on well-sampled faunas from Laurasia; far less is known about dinosaurian faunas of the Southern Hemisphere, especially Africa. The late Maastrichtian Phosphates of Morocco provide a rare window into African dinosaur diversity. Abelisaurids, lambeosaurines, and titanosaurian sauropods are known. However, no diagnostic titanosaur remains have been recovered, leaving the affinities of these sauropods unclear. We describe Phosphatotitan khouribgaensis gen. et sp. nov., a new titanosaur from the Maastrichtian of Sidi Chennane, Khouribga Province. Phosphatotitan is represented by dorsal, sacral, and caudal vertebrae, and the pelvis. The new species differs from titanosaurs described from the Cretaceous of Africa and Europe but resembles South American Lognkosauria, and especially Patagotitan, in having short dorsal and caudal centra, expanded dorsal and caudal neural spines, and a broad pubis. Its small size relative to other Lognkosauria (3.5–4 tonnes) suggests a lineage selected for small size. The close relationships of Morocco’s titanosaurs and abelisaurids to South American species may reflect a wide distribution of these clades prior to the opening of the South Atlantic and the separation of Africa and South America ~100 Ma, while a complex pattern of oceanic dispersal may explain the presence of distinct saltasauroid lineages worldwide. The latest Cretaceous Gondwanan dinosaur faunas were highly endemic due to a combination of continental fragmentation, extinction, and dispersal, creating high endemism in southern continents and within Africa, suggesting that Maastrichtian dinosaur diversity is underestimated. Opuntia ficus-indica (L.) Mill., also named Cactus pear, is a crop widespread in many countries with Mediterranean and subtropical climates, where it represents a valuable source of food. However, in southern Europe, this fruit market is limited to a few months, from summer to autumn. Extending the cultivation period would allow farmers to maximize the crop’s potential, thereby extending the Cactus pear market season throughout much of the year. In this study, conducted in southern Sardinia (Italy), progressive pruning was applied with the aim of evaluating the fruit characteristics in relation to this type of cultivation, also considering the weather conditions during the experimental period. Morphological traits and physicochemical compositions of fruit picked in four harvests during two sampling seasons from August 2022 to March 2023, and from August 2023 to March 2024 were compared. According to principal component analysis (PCA), most of the observed characters showed significant differences among harvest periods but also between the two seasons of cultivation (year of cultivation: r = 0.722 on PC1), suggesting that the meteorological trend strongly modulated fruit traits. Some fruit qualities were partially lost during the winter months, such as juice acidity and total soluble solids (TSS). October was the month with the highest TSS levels (13.5 ± 0.25), followed by August, January and March. On the other hand, juiciness and fresh weight remained unchanged or even improved in fruit harvested out-of-season. As observed in the redundancy analysis (RDA) a contribution of 54% due to weather variability emerged. In Particular, TSS levels, pH and juice dry matter were associated with high temperatures, solar radiation, and wind intensity. Wind speed was also moderately linked with betalain content. Moreover, high relative humidity was associated with lower pH values, higher water content, and higher fruit fresh weight. A significant difference was found between the two years in betalains content (80.0 ± 3.7 µg·mL−1 in 2022–2023 and 28.2 ± 2.5 µg·mL−1 in 2023–2024). The breakdown in the 2023–2024 season was likely due to the strong heat wave of July 2023 (up to 47 °C), which caused their partial degradation. In light of seasonal variability, this work provides some useful insights for future management of Cactus pear, also considering the possibility of usefully extending the period of cultivation and harvesting. Though the European Commission has repeatedly stated that the necessary energy transition in Europe should leave “no one behind”, this paper describes a building refurbishment case that has entailed economic hardships for the low-income families involved. The project is located in the area of P. D. Orcasitas in southern Madrid, led by a grassroots neighbours’ movement, comprising one hundred and seven housing blocks, containing more than 2000 dwellings. The main source of funding for the operation consists of subsidies granted by the Madrid City Council; however, Spanish legislation requires the state Agency of Tax Administration to classify these subsidies as capital gains derived from lucrative transfers. Based on the tax data of vulnerable beneficiaries, the conclusion is that the recipients have ended up returning part of the subsidies to the State through their Income Tax Return. In addition, the Spanish Social Security Institute requires the return of social benefits associated with non-contributory retirement pensions and the Minimum Living Income. Apart from tax accounting, regulations are revised to draw conclusions. Unlike most actuations of this kind, in this case the negative effects are obvious. Although intended to alleviate fuel poverty, the initiative has exacerbated vulnerability due to the impact of the imposed penalties on household income. In conclusion, unless preventive measures are implemented, the mandatory refurbishment of inefficient buildings may place an undue burden on vulnerable low-income occupants and hinder the effective implementation of energy-efficiency regulations. Housing industrialization and modularization have gained traction as responses to two pressing challenges in the construction sector: the chronic shortage of affordable housing and the substantial environmental footprint of conventional building methods. Yet prevailing modular housing models in Europe remain constrained by dependence on global supply chains, production concentrated in large industrial operators, and insufficient adaptation to local material and territorial conditions. This article presents a state-of-the-art review of modular timber housing in Europe, examining technological typologies, market structures, and national regulatory frameworks. The methodology integrates a systematic literature and market review, a comparative country analysis, and an embedded case study. Findings indicate that the viability of modular timber housing depends not only on material performance but on its embeddedness in coherent industrial systems, business strategies, and regulatory contexts. Against this backdrop, the VICHO project is introduced as a case study exploring an open, proximity-based industrialization model that valorizes local poplar timber in southern Europe, in alignment with circular bioeconomy principles and the New European Bauhaus. Old-growth forests play a vital role in the conservation of terrestrial biodiversity, though they are rare and increasingly threatened worldwide. The Mediterranean region hosts notable examples of these ecosystems, but information about their location, structure, and biodiversity is still largely incomplete. In this work, we tested the hypothesis that the region of Tuscany (Italy) harbors forest sites with old-growth characteristics in light of the EU indicators and the Italian ministerial guidelines. Accordingly, data on stand structural and plant diversity variables were collected in 27 plots located in pre-selected sites across different forest types of the region. As a result, 12 sites were inventoried that can be proposed as candidates for the national network of old-growth forests. These were largely unknown, ca. 10–300 ha in surface and encompassing five main forest types across 14 Natura2000 habitats. All stands have reached the mature or nearly senescent stage thanks to natural dynamic processes for over 70 years after the cessation of substantial anthropogenic disturbances. The structural heterogeneity index (SHI), based on living and deadwood biomass variables, was relatively high (66.2–84%). However, structural variables depended on forest type, thus on bioclimatic context and dominant tree species. Stands with beech and mountain conifers showed more pronounced old-growth characteristics than Mediterranean stands due to a faster recovery dynamic after cessation of disturbance. As many as 193 vascular plant taxa were recorded, with 16 species occurring with trees ≥ 50 cm in diameter. Forest specialist taxa, either woody or herbaceous, were prevalent, but numerous generalists also occurred in the gaps. Ancient forest species were also well represented, supporting the long temporal continuity of the forests. This work advances knowledge about forest sites with old-growth characteristics in southern Europe, contributing to the implementation of the national network and the EU Biodiversity Strategy 2030. Strict protection of these sites is necessary to allow the forest stands to fully reach the old-growth stage in the next decades, despite the negative influence of climate change. Full article

Background: Vitamin D deficiency remains a widespread public health issue in Europe, despite the availability of sunlight, dietary sources, supplements, and food fortification. National fortification strategies differ substantially in their regulatory approaches, food vehicles, and fortification levels, influencing the population’s vitamin D intake and status. Objective: The primary objective of this study was to map vitamin D food fortification policies across European Union (EU) Member States, European Free Trade Association (EFTA) countries, and the United Kingdom (UK), focusing on regulatory frameworks, eligible food categories, and implementation models. Methods: A structured review of national legislation and official guidance on vitamin D food fortification was conducted between December 2025 and March 2026 across EU Member States (n = 27), EFTA countries (n = 4), and the UK. For EU Member States, the framework established by Regulation (EC) No 1925/2006 was examined alongside national implementation measures. For EFTA countries and the UK, corresponding national legislation and official regulatory guidance were reviewed. Data were extracted on fortification policy status, eligible food categories, legal basis, and fortification levels. Targeted searches of PubMed and Scopus were performed to identify modeling studies and policy analyses supporting the interpretation of the findings. Results: Fortification policies show marked heterogeneity. Mandatory fortification is limited to a few countries and specific foods: Finland (homogenized skim milk), Sweden (low-fat milk, fermented dairy, plant-based alternatives, and fat spreads), Belgium (margarine and selected fats), and Poland (margarine and fat spreads). In most other European countries, vitamin D fortification is voluntary under EU legislation or equivalent national legislation, depending on market uptake. Food vehicles vary regionally, with Northern Europe extending fortification beyond fats to include fluid milk and plant-based drinks, whereas other regions mainly fortify margarines, cereals, dairy products, and plant-based beverages. Fortification levels also differ, with some countries specifying maximal or exact levels, while others lack national standards. Data on fortified foods are limited in several Central and Southern European countries. Modeling indicates that multi-vehicle fortification is more effective than single-vehicle approaches, safely increasing population intakes while reducing deficiency prevalence. Conclusions: Vitamin D fortification policies across Europe are highly heterogeneous. Most countries rely on voluntary approaches, which provide limited coverage. Strengthening policy through mandatory and well-coordinated multi-vehicle strategies, informed by modeling and population-based studies, can improve vitamin D intake, reduce deficiency prevalence, and enhance health equity. Southern Europe is a climate change hotspot, with rising temperatures threatening the region’s tourism industry. While existing research has focused on supply-side adaptations and macro-level demand shifts, this study examines the demand side—tourist experience and adaptive behaviors at the micro-experiential level, with implications for broader discussions of resilience and adaptive capacity. The study analyzed 6466 TripAdvisor reviews from 11 open-air heritage sites in Italy, Greece, Spain, and Malta, linking reviews to site-relative thermal exposure tertiles and applying dictionary-based text matching with mixed-effects models. Under hotter conditions, tourists were significantly more likely to mention heat, thermal discomfort, and coping resources such as shade and drinking water, with co-occurrence patterns indicating that discomfort and relief-oriented infrastructure are narrated together. Yet overall satisfaction ratings remained uniformly high and statistically unaffected by temperature, revealing a paradox wherein experiential strain intensifies while evaluative scores stay stable. These findings suggest patterns consistent with behavioral and cognitive adaptive responses, whereby positive evaluations are maintained despite heightened thermal stress, and indicate that narrative-based indicators may capture experiential shifts that conventional satisfaction metrics miss.
