Host genetic variability is relevant to understanding how parasites modulate natural selection in wild fish populations. Coastal lagoons are transitional ecosystems where knowledge lacks on relationships between genotypic diversity with parasitism. The aim of this study was to assess the effect of genetic diversity on host health and parasitological traits in fish inhabiting a Mediterranean lagoon. Black-striped pipefish Syngnathus abaster were collected in August 2023 and 2024 from the Mar Menor (Iberian lagoon, SE Spain). Genetic diversity was measured as Internal Relatedness (IR: a homozygosity index from microsatellite markers). Population frequency was lower for the medium IR level. For this same category, both health indices (external body condition and internal organs) indicated a worse status. Parasite prevalence, abundance and an index of life-cycle complexity (heteroxenous species) were greater for the medium level of genetic diversity. Such results are explained under a scenario of parasite-mediated disruptive selection: a higher disease pressure against the phenotypically intermediate individuals. Two contrasting strategies were detected to better control parasitism at the host genotypic level: (1) high homozygosity, and (2) high heterozygosity, which probably reflects better immuno-competence as a phenotypic trait. From an evolutionary perspective, parasites play a crucial role in shaping genetic diversity within host populations. Full article

Background/Objectives: Oral anticoagulant therapy (OAT) has been prescribed for over seventy years to prevent thromboembolic complications associated with various conditions. The emergence of direct-acting oral anticoagulants (DOACs) has reduced the use of vitamin K antagonists (VKAs), but specific clinical scenarios still necessitate VKAs. Nurses play a crucial role in managing OAT, and their self-efficacy is essential for optimal patient outcomes. This study aims to validate and adapt the Nursing Self-Efficacy for Oral Anticoagulant Therapy Management (SE-OAM) questionnaire to Spanish (SE-OAM-SV) to assess nurses’ self-efficacy in managing OAT. Methods: A methodological design was employed to develop the validity and reliability of the SE-OAM-SV. The process included translation and back-translation, expert review, and a pilot study. Content validity was analyzed using the content validity index (CVI), modified kappa coefficient, and Aiken’s V. A descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted with 100 nurses across Spain to test the SE-OAM-SV and identify comprehension issues. Internal consistency was assessed via Cronbach’s alpha. Results: The translation process highlighted some items requiring clarification, which were resolved through expert consultation. The SE-OAM-SV demonstrated adequate content validity with a global CVI of 0.86. The pilot study revealed an average participant age of 41.3 years and 17.3 years of professional experience. The SE-OAM-SV showed high internal consistency with a Cronbach’s alpha of 0.96. The average score of participants on the SE-OAM-SV was 56.8 points, indicating room for improvement in all aspects of the scale. Conclusion: The SE-OAM-SV is a reliable and valid tool for measuring nurses’ self-efficacy in managing OAT in Spanish-speaking communities. This tool can facilitate the development of educational programs and public policies to enhance nurses’ self-efficacy and improve patient outcomes. The availability of the SE-OAM-SV supports larger-scale studies and validation in other Spanish-speaking countries. Full article

The blue crab Callinectes sapidus Rathbun, 1896 is native to the western coast of the Atlantic Ocean. Although its arrival to the Mediterranean was probably due to ballast water, this species has several characteristics that have enabled it to successfully invade countless localities in the Mediterranean and the Black Sea. Little is known about its feeding habits and ecosystem impacts in the Mediterranean basin. This study aimed to provide information on the natural diet of C. sapidus by comparing the stomach contents of specimens caught in different seasons and habitats of the SE Iberian Peninsula (hypersaline waters in Mar Menor Lagoon and brackish waters in Guardamar Bay). This study also tested whether gender influences prey selection and if ovigerous females exhibit limited feeding activity. Regarding the frequency of occurrence, the results indicated that in Mar Menor Lagoon the most frequently consumed prey were Crustacea (60%), followed by fish (57%) and Mollusca (29%), whilst in Guardamar Bay, Mollusca (40%), sediment (32%), algae (24%) and Crustacea (24%) were dominant. It has been determined that this species predates heavily on Mediterranean shrimp Penaeus kerathurus, an economically important shrimp species in the lagoon area. Analysis using a generalised linear model indicated that sex, season and size class were factors that significantly influenced the stomach content weight. Furthermore, non-ovigerous females had significantly fuller stomachs than ovigerous individuals. Since the population of Callinectes sapidus tends to increase in the Mediterranean basin, monitoring of its feeding ecology is recommended to determine its impact on the ecosystem. Full article

The Onil and Ibi sections (Prebetic Zone, Betic Cordillera: Alicante, SE Spain) record a late Ypresian (Cuisian) to early Lutetian (~51 to ~43 Myr) carbonate platform succession, dated using larger benthic foraminifera (LBF) and planktonic foraminifera. Seven field lithofacies (L1 to L7) and five thin-section microfacies (Mf1–Mf5) were identified, indicating inner- to mid-ramp environments (from seagrass meadows to Maërl-LBF-dominated) in warm-water and low-latitude conditions. A distinctive feature of these platforms is their dominance by LBF in association with rhodophyceae, contrasting with typical coral reef factories. We propose a novel carbonate production model, “TC-factory”, to describe these warm-temperate systems. Integrated field logging, drone imagery, and microfacies data allowed us to define a sequence stratigraphic framework comprising five lower-frequency sequences (LFS: ~2 Myr average duration), each of them nesting various numbers of high-frequency sequences (HFS: ~0.25 to ~1 Myr). The LFSs belong to a higher-rank sequence bounded by regional unconformities. The five LFSs only broadly match the upper Ypresian and lower Lutetian cycles in global eustatic curves (~51 to ~43 Myr), indicating that other regional or local controls were important. The number of HFSs being fewer than expected also suggests additional controls, such as local tectonics, erosion during lowstands, or carbonate production feedback. Full article

This study analyzes 1980–2020 landings data from three Mediterranean coastal lagoons—the Logarou and Rodia-Tsoukalio Lagoons (NW Greece) and the Mar Menor Lagoon (SE Spain)—to assess ecosystem changes and fishing pressure dynamics. The findings classify these systems as low-yielding, with productivity ranked as follows: Yield Logarou > Yield Rodia-Tsoukalio = Yield Mar Menor. Mean trophic level analysis (mTrL) revealed significant differences driven by the contribution of detritivorous and mid-level carnivorous species (TrL Mar Menor > TrL Rodia-Tsoukalio > TrL Logarou). The fishing pressure indices suggest reduced fishing intensity in the Greek lagoons, while in Mar Menor, a stable Fisheries in Balance (FiB) trend corresponded with stable yields despite eutrophication. Cluster analysis (CA) and principal component analysis (PCA) linked ecosystem differences to sediment characteristics and changes in habitat structure. These results underscore a transition of Mediterranean coastal lagoons toward new ecological states, highlighting the urgent need for habitat conservation and adaptive management strategies to ensure sustainable fisheries under increasing environmental pressures. These findings may be extrapolated to similar transitional coastal ecosystems facing comparable anthropogenic stressors worldwide, providing a broader framework for understanding and managing lagoon systems under changing environmental conditions. Floods are a major threat to human life and economic assets. Monitoring these events is therefore essential to quantify and minimize such losses. Remote sensing has been used to extract flooded areas, with SAR imagery being particularly useful as it is independent of weather conditions. This approach is more difficult when detecting flooded areas in semi-arid environments, without a reference permanent water body, than when monitoring the water level rise of permanent rivers or lakes. In this study, Random Forest is used to estimate flooded cells after 19 events in Campo de Cartagena, an agricultural area in SE Spain. Sentinel-1 SAR metrics are used as predictors and irrigation ponds as training areas. To minimize false positives, the pre- and post-event results are compared and only those pixels with a probability of water increase are considered as flooded areas. The ability of the RF model to detect water surfaces is demonstrated (mean accuracy = 0.941, standard deviation = 0.048) along the 19 events. Validating using optical imagery (Sentinel-2 MSI) reduces accuracy to 0.642. This form of validation can only be applied to a single event using a S2 image taken 3 days before the S1 image. A large number of false negatives is then expected. A procedure developed to correct for this error gives an accuracy of 0.886 for this single event. Another form of indirect validation consists in relating the area flooded in each event to the amount of rainfall recorded. An RF regression model using both rainfall metrics and season of the year gives a correlation coefficient of 0.451 and RMSE = 979 ha using LOO-CV. This result shows a clear relationship between flooded areas and rainfall metrics. Full article

Background/Objectives: Food insecurity (FI) is the ‘limited or uncertain availability of nutritionally adequate and safe foods’. Although the literature suggests a strong association between FI, socioeconomic status (SES), and health, the nature of their relationship is not well specified in vulnerable population groups such as university students. To address this gap, this study aimed to assess the prevalence of FI among university students, examine its association with various health outcomes, and explore the potential mediating effect of SES. Methods: This cross-sectional survey included a convenience sample of 394 participants from the University of the Basque Country UPV/EHU (Spain). Data on SES, demographic and lifestyle factors, and health outcomes were collected between December 2021 and January 2022, using a questionnaire developed by the Food Insecurity among European University Students during the COVID-19 Pandemic (FINESCOP) consortium. Internal consistency of the questionnaire was assessed at the UPV/EHU using Cronbach’s α. FI was measured using the Food Insecurity Experience Scale (FIES) from the FAO, which was validated through testing of Rasch model assumptions. Results: Overall, 19% of university students were food insecure, with 2.5% experiencing moderate and 0.8% experiencing severe FI. Adjusted linear regression models showed that FI was associated with a higher body mass index (BMI), poorer self-rated health, and worsening health during the pandemic. SES mediated the relationship between FI and health outcomes, with the strongest mediation observed for BMI (indirect association: B = 0.25, 95% CI = −0.17–0.75; total association: B = 1.85, 95% CI = 0.14–3.56; 15.3% of mediation). Conclusions: FI is prevalent among UPV/EHU students, and it is associated with multiple negative health outcomes, partly explained by SES. To effectively address FI, higher education institutions should consider implementing comprehensive strategies. For future research, longitudinal studies would be recommended to systematically monitor FI and examine causal relationships. Full article

A natural diatomite was used to hydrothermally synthesise Na-X zeolite. Albacete diatomite from southern Spain (mainly constituted by opaline silica) was chemically treated with HCl and NaOH to obtain sodium silicate, a reagent necessary for zeolitic synthesis. The experimental synthesis protocol was performed at 75 °C by mixing the obtained silicatic solution with chemical reagents represented by soda and alumina. Na-X zeolite begins to appear after only 1.5 h and reaches its crystallisation climax at 11 h. Hydroxisodalite appears at 40 h. Synthesized phases were subjected to chemical-crystallographical and mineralogical-textural characterisation. The thermal behaviour and infrared response have also been investigated. The purity of the synthesized zeolite, verified through quantitative phase analysis using the combined Rietveld and reference intensity ratio methods, opens the way to a possible industrial transfer of the experimental procedure. In the Betic-Rif Cordilleras, recent works have evidenced the existence of well-developed Eocene (Ypresian-Bartonian) carbonate platforms rich in Larger Benthic Foraminifera (LBF). Contrarily to other sectors of the western Tethys, like the Pyrenean domain in the North Iberian Margin, where these platforms started in the early Ypresian (Ilerdian), in the Betic-Rif chains, the recorded Eocene platforms started in the late Ypresian (Cuisian) after a widespread gap of sedimentation including the Ilerdian time span. In this work, the Aspe-Terreros Prebetic section (External Betic Zone) is studied. An Eocene succession with gravity flow deposits consisting of terrigenous and bioclastic turbidites, as well as olistostromes with olistoliths, was detected. In one of these turbidites, we dated (with the inherent limitations when dating bioclasts contained by gravity flow deposits) the middle Ilerdian, on the basis of LBF, representing a vestige of a missing Illerdian carbonate platform. The microfacies of these turbidites and olistoliths rich in LBF have been described and documented in detail. The gap in the sedimentary record and absence of Ilerdian platforms in the Betic-Rif Cordillera have been related to the so-called Eo-Alpine tectonics (Cretaceous to Paleogene) and sea-level variations contemporarily with the establishment of shallow marine realms in the margins of the western Tethys. A New Earth Crustal Velocity Field Estimation from ROA cGNSS Station Networks in the South of Spain and North Africa

The convergence zone of the Eurasian (EURA) and North Africa plate (NUBIA) is primarily marked by the activity between the Betics in south of Spain and the Rif and Atlas in Morocco. This area, where the diffuse tectonics between these plates are currently converging in a NW-SE direction, presents several continuous fault zones, such as the Betic–Alboran–Rif shear zone. The Royal Institute and Observatory of the Spanish Navy (ROA) currently operates geodetic stations in various parts of North Africa, some in particularly interesting locations, such as the Alhucemas (ALHU) rock, and also in more stable areas within the Nubian plate, such as Tiouine (TIOU). For the first time, the displacement velocities of the ROA CGNSS stations have been estimated to provide additional geodynamic information in an area with few stations. The obtained velocities have been compared with other recent studies in this field that included data older than 10 years or episodic campaigns without continuous stations. PRIDE (3.1.2) and SARI (February, 2025) software were used for processing, and the velocities were obtained by the ROA for international stations (RABT, SFER, MALA, HUEL, LAGO, TARI, and ALME). These initial results confirm the convergence trend between Eurasia and Nubia of approximately 4 mm/year in the NW-SE direction. It is also evident that there is independent behavior among the Atlas stations and those in the Moroccan Meseta compared to those located in the Rif mountain range, which could indicate the separation of smaller tectonic domains within the continental plate convergence zone. Along the Rif coast in Al Hoceima Bay, the faults are being approached; additionally, there is a slight clockwise displacement towards Melilla, which has also been demonstrated by stations in the Middle Atlas, such as TAZA. As for the stations in the Strait of Gibraltar, they exhibit a similar behavior until reaching the diffuse zone of the Guadalquivir basin where the diffuse convergence zone may exist. This may explain why stations to the north of the basin, such as LIJA or HUEL, change their behavior compared to nearby ones like SFER in the south. Furthermore, Alboran seems to follow the same displacement in direction and velocity as the other stations in North Africa and southern Spain. Full article

Huelva is a city in SW Spain with 150,000 inhabitants, located in the proximity of two heavy chemical industry complexes, the highest naturally occurring radioactive material (NORM) waste (phosphogypsum) stacks of Europe and a highly polluted estuary, with elevated cardiovascular disease and cancer mortality rates. This study analyses the association between cumulated exposure levels to 16 metal(loid)s (Al, As, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Fe, Mn, Mo, Ni, Pb, Se, Tl, U, V, and Zn) measured in the toenail of a sample (n = 55 participants) of the general control population of Huelva City who were involved in the MCC-Spain study and the spatial proximity patterns to the local polluting sources. Residents of the city of Huelva have higher levels of Fe, Ni, Cr, Se, As, and Co in their toenails compared to the levels found in populations with similar characteristics living in non-polluted areas. Moreover, the highest concentrations of As, Pb, Cd, Mo, and Se were found in toenails of participants living near the NORM waste stack, while the highest Cu, Zn, and Al contents corresponded to people residing near the industrial area. Reasons for the Practice, Abandonment, and Non-Practice of Extracurricular Physical Activity and Sport Among Primary and Secondary School Students in Cantabria: What Can We Do About It?

(1) Background: Physical education at school is not able to meet the need for physical activity and sport (PA and S) established by international organizations, making it necessary to implement its practice outside school hours. This study aimed to find out the reasons for practicing, abandoning, and never having practiced PA and S outside school hours among students of Primary Education (PE) and Secondary Education (SE) in Cantabria (Spain). (2) Overall, 1038 students participated (349 from PE and 689 from SE), consisting of 512 boys and 526 girls between 10 and 17 years old (M = 12.92; SD = 1.92). They completed an ad hoc questionnaire with 21 questions about reasons for practicing (12 items), abandoning (3 items), and never having practiced PA and S (6 items) between the months of May and June 2024. (3) Results: As for active students, boys argue that they do so because of the influence of friends (p = 0.024), search for excitement (p = 0.002), liking PA and S (p = 0.022), and entertainment (p = 0.001). In PE, compared to SE, the most important factors are excitement (p < 0.001), health (p = 0.005), and liking PA and S (p = 0.022). Students who abandon PA and S do so because of the competitive environment (p = 0.001), with boys predominating. SE students highlight reluctance and laziness (p < 0.001) and the loss of liking PA and S (p = 0.013). Students who have never practiced PA and S do so because they do not find any sport motivating (p = 0.047) and because of reluctance and laziness (p = 0.018), especially among girls. In SE, the differences appear due to reluctance and laziness (p = 0.009) and because friends do not practice PA and S (p = 0.049). (4) Conclusions: Boys prioritize emotional and competency aspects, while girls focus on social aspects and happiness. PE students tend to participate in sports for fun and to improve their skills, while SE students tend to show reluctance and laziness and a loss of interest in PA and S. Full article

Extraction activities can have a significant impact on the environment due to the mobilization of trace elements. These elements can pose a risk to soils, biota, water, and human health when incorporated into nearby ecosystems. To evaluate the transfer of As, Cd, Pb, and Zn from mine areas to the marine environment, a study was conducted in the Cartagena-La Union mining district (SE Spain). The study area included the mouth of a stream affected by waste materials from tailing ponds. In addition, a maritime area without mining influence was selected as a control site. Sediment samples were collected (three transects with nine sampling points and three depths) at the El Gorguel shoreline, and analyzed for pH, electrical conductivity, total metal(loid)s content, water-soluble anions, and metal(loid)s in chemical fraction distribution. Water and biota samples (Paracentrotus lividus, Patella vulgata, Hexaplex trunculus, Anemonia viridis, and Trachinotus ovatus) were also collected for metal(loid) content analysis. The results showed that the metal(loid)s concentration in the sediment increased compared to the control site, which was not influenced by mining activities. The chemical composition of metal(loid)s in the sediments revealed that Cd is the most hazardous element due to its high concentration in the labile fractions (20%), suggesting easy transfer to the marine environment. However, transfer mechanisms should be studied in various scenarios with different climatic, wave, and tidal conditions. Marine biota metal(loid)s concentrations showed an increase in specimens collected under the influence of mining activities but without exceeding limits that would affect incorporation into the trophic chain. Consequently, bioaccumulation and biomagnification processes must be considered in a future biomonitoring program. Full article

Since ancient times, mining activities have been recognised as having a strong environmental impact. Due to the extraordinary amount of waste and impacts on the landscape, environmental concerns caused by mining can be found worldwide. The risks associated with mining waste are of great concern, especially when these residues come from metal mining and its associated potentially toxic elements that can be released into the environment. The reality of many of these metal mining areas is that, despite the extensive regulatory frameworks and remediation techniques applied, they continue to have high levels of contamination, posing a source of environmental and public health risk to their surroundings. The issues underlying this situation are details that can only be detected by experience in the management and thorough knowledge of the dynamics of these tailings in the long term. And in many cases, the key is in the details. For this purpose, the case of the former metal mining district of Cartagena-La Unión (SE Spain), one of the most affected areas in the European continent by these metal mining wastes, has been analyzed. In conclusion, it has been shown that the legal status of these waste and mining operations and the lack of control and effectiveness of rehabilitation activities are behind the worrying environmental situation of these areas. The interaction between the legal framework and the environmental and technical knowledge of these tailings and mining areas reveals practical issues beyond the scope of general analysis. This case study, conducted in the main Spanish metal mining area, concerns waste volume, and its findings offer the potential to improve the safety and environmental quality of metal mining regions elsewhere. Here I examine the overexploitation of Artemisia granatensis, a narrow endemic medicinal plant species from Sierra Nevada, Spain, and the consequences for its conservation. With over 50,000 flowering plant species used for medicinal purposes worldwide, many species face sustainability issues due to overharvesting and habitat loss. Historical documentation of A. granatensis use dates back to the 13th century, highlighting its significance in traditional medicine. However, this species has suffered extensive overexploitation, particularly in the 19th and 20th centuries, leading to a significant decline in populations. Conservation concerns were first raised in 1909, and despite the species being legally protected since 1982, illegal collection and environmental pressures persist. Today, A. granatensis is critically endangered, with fewer than 2000 individuals remaining in fragmented populations. The study synthesizes the historical and recent literature to understand the long-standing pressures on this species and the limited conservation efforts made. Cultivation of A. granatensis is proposed as a crucial strategy to reduce pressure on wild populations and ensure the survival of this flagship important plant species. Full article
