Test fires of a rotating detonation engine (RDE) annular combustor operating on a methane–oxygen mixture were conducted. Compared to the original RDE combustor previously tested, it was modified in terms of changing the layout of the water cooling system, the positions of ports for sensors, and the shape of the supersonic nozzle. The stable operation process with a single detonation wave continuously rotating in the annular gap with the velocity of ~1900 m/s (rotation frequency of ~6 kHz) was obtained in the wide range of flow rates of propellant components. This is an important distinguishing feature of the present RDE combustor compared to the analogs known from the literature, which usually exhibit an increase in the number of simultaneously rotating detonation waves with an increase in the flow rates of propellant components. Compared to the original RDE combustor, the maximum duration of operation and the attained sea-level specific impulse were increased from 1 to 30 s and from 250 to 277 s, respectively. The thermal states of all heat-stressed elements of the combustor were obtained. The maximum heat fluxes are registered in the water cooling jackets of the central body and the combustor outer wall. Heat losses in the water cooling system are shown to increase with the average pressure in the combustor. The maximum value of the average heat flux over 20 MW/m2 is achieved on the combustor outer wall. The average heat flux into the combustor outer wall is approximately 20% higher than that into the central body. The average heat flux into the nozzle is several times lower than similar values for the combustor outer wall and central body. The total heat loss into the water-cooled walls of the combustor reach about 10% of the total thermal power of the combustor. Full article

The combustion diagnostics of rotating detonation engines (RDE) based on excited-state hydroxyl radical (OH*) chemiluminescence imaging is an important method used to characterize combustion flow fields. Overcoming the limitations of imaging devices to achieve nanosecond-scale temporal resolution is crucial for observing the propagation of high-frequency detonation waves. In this work, a nanosecond-scale imaging system with an ultra-high spatiotemporal resolution was designed and constructed. The system employs four near ultraviolet (NUV)-visible ICMOS, equipped with a high-gain, dual-microchannel plate (MCP) architecture fabricated using a new atomic layer deposition (ALD) process. The system has a maximum electronic gain of 107, a minimum integration time of 3 ns, a minimum interval time 4 ns, and an imaging resolution of 1608 × 1104 pixels. Using this system, high-spatiotemporal-resolution visualization experiments were conducted on RDE, fueled by H2–oxygen-enriched air and NH3–H2–oxygen-enriched air. The results enable the observation of the detonation wave structure, the cellular structure, and the propagation velocity. In combination with optical flow analysis, the images reveal vortex structures embedded within the cellular structure. For NH3-H2 mixed fuel, the results indicate that detonation wave propagation is more unstable than in H2 combustion, with a larger bright gray area covering both the detonation wave and the product region. The experimental results demonstrate that high spatiotemporal OH* imaging enables non-contact, full-field measurements, providing valuable data for elucidating RDE combustion mechanisms, guiding model design, and supporting NH3 combustion applications. Rotating detonation engines (RDEs) are expected to have higher specific work and efficiency, but the high-temperature transonic flow delivered by the combustor poses relevant design and technological difficulties. This work proposes a 1D model for turbine internal cooling design which can be used to explore multiple design options during the preliminary design of the cooling system. Being based on an energy balance applied to an infinitesimal control volume, the model is general and can be adapted to other applications. The model is applied to design a cooling system for a pre-existing stator blade geometry. Both the inputs and the outputs of the 1D simulation are in good agreement with the values found in the literature. Subsequently, 1D results are compared to a full conjugate heat transfer (CHT) simulation. The agreement on the internal heat transfer coefficient is excellent and is entirely within the uncertainty of the correlation. Despite some criticality in finding agreement with the thermal power distribution, the Mach number, the total pressure drop, and the coolant temperature increase in the cooling channels are accurately predicted by the 1D code, thus confirming its value as a preliminary design tool. To guarantee the integrity of the blade at the extremities, a cooling solution with coolant injection at the leading and trailing edge is studied. A finite element analysis of the cooled blade ensures the structural feasibility of the cooling system. The computational economy of the 1D code is then exploited to perform a global sensitivity analysis using a polynomial chaos expansion (PCE) surrogate model to compute Sobol’ indices. Full article

The deflagration-to-detonation transition (DDT) is a critical process for achieving reliable ignition in detonation-based propulsion systems, such as Rotating Detonation Engines (RDEs). This study experimentally investigates the effect of spatial variations in blockage ratio (BR) on flame acceleration and detonation onset within a modular pre-detonator. Three DDT device configurations (converging, constant, and diverging) were designed to have an identical average BR of 0.5 and were tested over equivalence ratios ranging from 0.64 to 1.6. High-speed imaging, pressure transducers, and schlieren visualization were employed to characterize flame propagation velocity, pressure evolution, and exit wave structures. The converging configuration consistently promoted earlier detonation onset and higher success rates, especially under fuel-rich conditions (ϕ = 1.6), while the diverging configuration failed to initiate detonation in all cases. Enhanced flame compression in the converging layout led to strong coupling between the shock and reaction fronts, facilitating robust detonation formation. These findings indicate that the spatial distribution of BR, rather than average BR alone, plays a decisive role in DDT performance. This work offers validated design insights for optimizing pre-detonator in RDE applications. Full article

A three-dimensional numerical investigation using ethylene–oxygen was conducted to examine the characteristics of detonation waves in a non-premixed rotating detonation engine (RDE) across three equivalence ratio conditions: fuel-lean, stoichiometric, and fuel-rich. The study aims to identify the distinct timescales associated with detonation wave propagation within the combustor and to analyze their impact on detonation wave behavior, emphasizing the influence of equivalence ratio and injector behavior on detonation wave characteristics. The results indicate that the wave behavior varies with mixture concentration, with the ethylene injector demonstrating greater stiffness compared to the oxygen injector. In lean mixtures, characterized by excess oxidizer, waves exhibit less intensity and slower progression toward equilibrium, resulting in prolonged reaction times. Rich mixtures, with excess fuel, also show a delayed approach to equilibrium and an extended chemical reaction timescale. In contrast, the near-stoichiometric mixture achieves efficient combustion with the highest thermicity, rapidly reaching equilibrium and exhibiting the shortest chemical reaction timescale. Overall, the induction timescale is generally 2–3 times longer than its respective chemical reaction timescale, while the equilibrium timescale spans a broad range, reflecting the complex, rapid dynamics inherent in these chemical processes. This study identifies the role of the characteristic chemical timescale in influencing the progression of pre-detonation deflagration in practical RDEs. Prolonged induction times in non-ideal conditions, such as those arising from equivalence ratio variations, promote incomplete reactions, thereby contributing to pre-detonation phenomena and advancing our understanding of the underlying flow physics. This study investigates the operational characteristics of the Rotating Detonation Engine (RDE), with a focus on fuel injector design. Inspired by the similarity between the fuel injection structure of RDE and the Jet in Supersonic Crossflow (JISC) of a scramjet, experimental research on fuel injectors with jet penetration was conducted. Five injectors were designed, each with a fixed fuel injection area or injection hole diameter. Experiments determined practical injection areas, and an empirical correlation was used to calculate jet penetration heights. Under conditions of a total mass flow rate of 105 ± 5 g/s and an equivalence ratio of 1.05 ± 0.1, combustion modes were analyzed. Initial detonation occurrence was assessed through pressure history, with a detailed analysis via image post-processing. The results indicated that the injector D4N15, with the highest jet penetration height, exhibited deflagration, while D4N23 showed chaotic propagation. The injector D2N60 demonstrated relatively unstable behavior in sustained detonation cases. Thrust comparisons revealed that D4N30, with wider hole spacing and higher jet penetration height, exhibited approximately 12.5% higher specific impulse compared to D1N240. These outcomes confirm the significant impact of jet penetration height and hole spacing on detonation propagation and engine performance. Full article

Accurately predicting the thermal characteristics and heat transfer distribution of the rotating detonation engine (RDE) and acquiring a clear understanding of the performance and mechanism of the rotating detonation are of great significance for achieving the safe and reliable long-duration operation of RDEs. Using RP-3 as fuel, a long-duration experimental study is performed on a 220 mm-diameter RDC to investigate the details with respect to the thermal environment. The heat flux at the typical location and the average heat flux of both the inner and outer cylinders are measured, respectively. Meanwhile, the peak pressure of the rotating detonation wave (RDW) and specific thrust are analyzed. When the ER is between 0.5 and 1 (oxidizer 2 kg/s), the stable rotating detonation mode is obtained, and the detonation duration is set as 40 s to accurately calculate the heat released by the detonation combustion. The heat flux in the upstream region of the RDW location ranges from 2.40 × 105 W/m2 to 3.17 × 105 W/m2, and the heat flux in the downstream area of the RDW location ranges from 1.05 × 106 W/m2 to 1.28 × 106 W/m2. The results demonstrate the important role of the detonation combustion zone, and the thrust performance of RDC can be improved by making the RDW move forward along the RDC axis, which is the optimal direction of detonation combustion. Through a comparison of average heat flux under different conditions, it is found that the heat released by the RDC is directly related to its thrust. In addition, the average heat flux of the inner cylinder is about three times that of the outer cylinder for the two-phase RDC with a Tesla valve intake structure, indicating that the high-temperature combustion product is closer to the inner wall. Therefore, more thermal protection should be allocated to the inner cylinder, and a more systematic analysis of the two-phase flow field distribution in the annular combustion chamber should be carried out to improve the thrust performance. In this paper, the average heat flux of the inner and outer cylinders of the RDC as well as the typical local heat flux of the outer cylinders is quantitatively measured by means of experiments, which not only deepens the understanding of RDC flow field distribution, but also provides quantitative boundary conditions for the thermal protection design of RDCs. A rotating detonation engine (RDE) is a highly promising detonation-based propulsion system and has been widely researched in recent decades. In this study, BYCFoam, the latest gaseous version of the BYRFoam family, is developed specifically for RDE simulations. It is based on the standard compressible flow solver rhoCentralFoam in OpenFOAM and incorporates several enhancements: improved reconstruction variables and flux schemes; detailed chemistry and transport properties; the utilization of an adaptive mesh refinement (AMR) and dynamic load balancing (DLB). A series of comprehensive numerical tests are conducted, including the shock-tube problem, shock-wave diffraction, homogeneous ignition delay, premixed flame, planar detonation, detonation cellular structure and rotating detonation combustor (RDC). The results demonstrate that BYCFoam can accurately and efficiently simulate the deflagration and detonation processes. This solver enhances the capability of the BYRFoam family for the in-depth exploration of RDE in future research. Full article

Rotating detonation engines (RDEs) are considered to be promising thrusters for aerospace propulsion. Detonation initiation in RDEs can be accompanied by a destructive explosion of an excess volume of the fuel mixture in the combustor. To exclude this phenomenon, a “mild” rather than “strong” initiation of detonation is required. For the mild initiation of detonation in RDEs, it is necessary to ignite a mixture of a certain minimum volume sufficient for deflagration-to-detonation transition (DDT). In this study, the critical conditions for detonation initiation through DDT in a semiconfined slit combustor simulating the RDE combustor with a separate supply of ethylene and oxygen diluted with nitrogen (from 0 to 40%) were obtained experimentally. It turned out that for the mild initiation of detonation, it is necessary to ignite the mixture upon reaching the critical (minimum) height of the combustible mixture layer. Thus, for the mild initiation of detonation in the undiluted C2H4 + 3O2 mixture filling such a slit combustor, the height of the mixture layer must exceed the slit width by approximately a factor of 12. In terms of the transverse size of the detonation cell λ the minimum layer height of such mixtures in experiments is ~150λ. Compared to the experiments with the premixed composition, the critical height of the layer is 20% larger, which is explained by the finite rate of mixing. As the degree of oxygen dilution with nitrogen increases, the critical height of the layer increases, and the role of finite rate mixing decreases: the results no longer depend on the method of combustible mixture formation. Fuel injection and mixing affect the characteristics of detonation initiation and propagation, as well as the propulsion performance of rotating detonation engine (RDE). A study on the injector is carried out in the present investigation. A rectangular-shaped hole-type fuel injector (RHFI) and slit-type fuel injector (SFI) were designed and compared experimentally at equivalent conditions. The investigation of the detonation propagation modes and the analysis of propulsion performance were carried out using fast Fourier transform (FFT), short-time Fourier transform (STFT), and unwrapped image post-processing. Under 50, 75, and 100 g/s flow rate conditions at an equivalence ratio of 1.0 ± 0.05, the RHFI has relatively stable detonation propagation characteristics, higher thrust, and specific impulse performance. Additionally, the results of the experiment indicate that the number of detonation waves affects performance. Full article

A three-dimensional upwind conservation element and solution element method (CESE) in cylindrical coordinates is first developed to effectively solve the unsteady reactive Euler equations governing a hydrogen–air rotating detonation engine (RDE) with coaxial structures. The effects of the annular width on the structure of the detonation front and the relationship between the thrust and mass flow rate are then investigated. Additionally, RDEs with various injection conditions are systematically analyzed regarding flow patterns and propulsion performance. The results reveal a positive correlation between the specific impulse and the area ratio of the injection slot to the head-end wall. Nevertheless, the specific impulse shows minimal dependence on the injector slot’s location when the area ratio is constant. Ultimately, it is concluded that the area ratio between the injector and the head-end wall is critical in determining the loss of specific impulse. Full article

Rotating detonation engines (RDEs) are a promising propulsion technology featuring high thermal efficiency and a simple structure. To adapt the practical engineering applications of ramjet RDEs, rotating detonation combustion using a liquid hydrocarbon and pure air mixture will be required. This paper presents an experimental study on the propagation characteristics of rotating detonation waves with a liquid hydrocarbon and high-enthalpy air mixture in a hollow cylindrical chamber. The parameters, such as the equivalence ratio and inlet mass flux, are considered in this experiment. The frequency and the propagation velocity of rotating detonation combustion are analyzed under typical operations. The experimental results show that the peak pressure and propagation velocity of the rotating detonation wave are close to the C-J theoretical values under the inlet mass flux of 400 kg/(m2s). Both the propagation velocity and peak pressure of the rotating detonation wave decrease as the mass flux and equivalence ratio are reduced while the number of detonation wavefronts increases. Detonation wave instability tends to occur when the inlet mass flux decreases. There is a transition progress from thermo-acoustic combustion to rotating detonation combustion in the experiment under the condition of mass flux 350 kg/(m2s) and the equivalent ratio 0.8. The static pressure in the chamber is higher during detonation combustion than during thermo-acoustic combustion. These experimental results provide evidence that rotating detonation waves have the potential to significantly improve propulsion performance. The findings can serve as a valuable reference for the practical engineering application of rotating detonation engines. Full article

Ozone addition presents a promising approach for optimizing and regulating both combustion and ignition mechanisms. In Rotating Detonation Engines (RDEs), investigating the impact of ozone addition is particularly important due to the fact of their unique operating conditions and potential for improved efficiency. This study explores the influence of ozone concentration, total temperature, and equivalent ratio on the combustion characteristics of a hydrogen–air mixture infused with ozone. Utilizing the mixture as a propellant, the combustion chamber of a continuous rotating detonation engine is replicated through an array of injection ports, with numerical simulations conducted to analyze the detonation wave combustion mode. Our results show that an increase in total temperature leads to an increase in the number of detonation waves. Incorporating a minor quantity of ozone can facilitate the ignition process for the detonation wave. Increasing the ozone content can result in the conversion from a single-wave to dual-wave or multi-wave mode, providing a more stable combustion interface. A low ozone concentration acts as an auxiliary ignition agent and can significantly shorten the induction time. As the total temperature increases, the detonation propagation velocity and the peak heat release rate both decrease concurrently, which leads to a decline in the exit total pressure and an augmentation in the specific impulse. Employing ozone exerts a minimal impact on the detonation propagation and the overall propulsion performance. The requirement for ozone-assisted initiation differs noticeably between rich and lean combustion. Full article

The conditions for the mild initiation of the detonation of homogeneous stoichiometric ethylene-oxygen mixtures diluted with nitrogen up to ~40%vol. in a planar semi-confined slit-type combustor with a slit 5.0 ± 0.4 mm wide, simulating the annular combustor of a Rotating Detonation Engine (RDE), are determined experimentally using self-luminous high-speed video recording and pressure measurements. To ensure the mild detonation initiation, the fuel mixture in the RDE combustor must be ignited upon reaching a certain limiting (minimal) fill with the mixture and the arising flame must be transformed to a detonation via deflagration-to-detonation transition (DDT). Thus, for mild detonation initiation in a C2H4 + 3O2 mixture filling the slit, the height of the mixture layer must exceed the slit width by approximately 10 times (~50 mm), and for the C2H4 + 3(O2 + 2/5 N2) mixture, by approximately 60 times. The limiting height of the mixture layer required for DDT exhibits a sharp increase at a nitrogen-to-oxygen mole ratio above 0.25. Compared to the height of the detonation waves continuously rotating in the RDE combustor in the steady-state operation mode, for a mild start of the RDE, the fill of the combustor with the explosive mixture to a height of at least four times more is required.
