Residual oil zones (ROZ) arise under the oil–water contact of main pay zones due to diverse geological conditions. Historically, these zones were considered economically unviable for development with conventional recovery methods because of the immobile nature of the oil. However, they represent a substantial subsurface volume with strong potential for CO2 sequestration and storage. Despite this potential, effective techniques for assessing CO2-EOR performance coupled with CCUS in ROZs remain limited. To address this gap, this study introduces a machine learning framework that employs artificial neural network (ANN) models trained on data generated from a large number of reservoir simulations (300 cases produced using Latin Hypercube Sampling across nine geological and operational parameters). The dataset was divided into training and testing subsets to ensure generalization, with key input variables including reservoir properties (thickness, permeability, porosity, Sorg, salinity) and operational parameters (producer BHP and CO2 injection rate). The objective was to forecast CO2 storage capacity and oil recovery potential, thereby reducing reliance on time-consuming and costly reservoir simulations. The developed ANN models achieved high predictive accuracy, with R2 values ranging from 0.90 to 0.98 and mean absolute percentage error (MAPRE) consistently below 10%. Validation against real ROZ field data demonstrated strong agreement, confirming model reliability. Beyond prediction, the workflow also provided insights for reservoir management: optimization results indicated that maintaining a producer BHP of approximately 1250 psi and a CO2 injection rate of 14–16 MMSCF/D offered the best balance between enhanced oil recovery and stable storage efficiency. In summary, the integrated combination of reservoir simulation and machine learning provides a fast, technically robust, and cost-effective tool for evaluating CO2-EOR and CCUS performance in ROZs. The demonstrated accuracy, scalability, and optimization capability make the proposed ANN workflow well-suited for both rapid screening and field-scale applications. Full article

Access to high-quality, culturally responsive nutrition advice during pregnancy is necessary for optimal health outcomes for mothers and babies. Evidence indicates that age, education and access to trained healthcare practitioners have a positive correlation with healthy food intake and positive outcomes. There are limited studies that discuss the importance of providing culturally responsive nutrition advice to pregnant Indigenous women. Therefore, this paper investigates the sources from which Indigenous women access nutrition information, assesses its adequacy in meeting needs, and identifies the effective ways to deliver this information. This study took place in Queensland (QLD), New South Wales (NSW), and Western Australia (WA), which were chosen to represent diverse cultural communities. A total of 103 participants were recruited, including Indigenous women and healthcare practitioners. Focus groups were audio-recorded, transcribed and analysed. Participants indicated that pregnant women are highly interested in improving their nutrition knowledge during pregnancy and actively seek information from their healthcare practitioners and dietitians. Findings suggested dissatisfaction with the information received, as it failed to address their needs. Results of this paper call for an urgent increased presence of community dietitians in antenatal clinics dedicated to Indigenous pregnant women as an additional way to provide families with the information they need for healthy pregnancies. Climate change threatens health and social development gains in Kenya, necessitating health policy planning for risk reduction and mitigation. To understand the state of knowledge on climate-related health impacts in Kenya, a scoping review of 25 years of environmental health research was conducted. In compliance with a pre-registered protocol, nine bibliographic databases and grey literature sources were searched for articles published from 2000 to 2024. Of 19,234 articles screened, 816 full texts were reviewed in duplicate, and a final 348 articles underwent data extraction for topic categorisation, trend analysis, and narrative summary. Most of the studies (97%, n = 336) were journal articles, with 64% published after 2014 (n = 224). The health topics centred on vector-borne diseases (45%, n = 165), primarily vector abundance (n = 111) and malaria (n = 67), while mental health (n = 12) and heat exposure (n = 9) studies were less frequent. The research was geographically concentrated on the Lake Victoria Basin, Rift Valley, and Coastal regions, with fewer studies from the northern arid and semi-arid regions. The findings show a shift from a focus on infectious diseases towards broader non-communicable outcomes, as well as regional disparities in research coverage. This review highlights the development of baseline associations between environmental exposures and health outcomes in Kenya, providing a necessary foundation for evidence-informed climate change and health policy. However, challenges in data and study designs limit some of the evidentiary value. Full article

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander ways of knowing, being and doing have fostered physical, social, and emotional wellbeing for millenia, forming a foundation of strength and resilience. However, colonisation, systemic violence and discrimination—including the forced removal of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children, which continues today—have disrupted this foundation, leading to compounding cycles of intergenerational and complex trauma. The enduring impact of intergenerational and complex trauma is exemplified in increasing proportions of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children being removed from their families and involved in the child protection and youth justice system—which represents a national crisis. Despite this crisis, the national response remains insufficient. To address these urgent issues, over 200 predominantly Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander stakeholders, participated in Gathering the Seeds Symposium, the inaugural meeting for the Replanting the Birthing Trees project held in Perth in April 2023. This meeting marked the beginning of a public dialogue aimed at Closing the Gap by advancing community-led strategies to break cycles of trauma and foster cycles of nurturing, recovery, and wellbeing for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander parents and children across the first 2000 days. We outline critical shortcomings in the current child protection and youth justice systems, and the urgent need for child wellbeing reform. Importantly we highlight recommendations made in submissions in 2023 to two key Australian inquiries—the National Early Years Strategy and the Human Rights Commission inquiry into out of home care and youth justice systems. We argue that structural reforms and culturally safe and skillful care for parents experiencing trauma and violence is a serious gap, and a national priority. The first 2000 days represents a critical window of opportunity to transform cycles of trauma into cycles of healing. It is time to ‘replant the birthing trees’ and ensure that all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander babies and families can have the best possible start to life through comprehensive models of care grounded in recognition of the right to self-determination and culture. Narrative therapy and expressive writing interventions have been found to improve health and wellbeing among vulnerable populations; however, few have been conducted with young lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer people, and those of other diverse sexual orientations and gender identities (LGBTQ+). This study aimed to determine how young LGBTQ+ people in Australia might make meaning of themselves and their experiences through life writing and the implications for health and wellbeing. A study was conducted with 20 LGBTQ+-identifying participants, aged 16 to 20, in or around Melbourne, Australia. The participants attended one of two writing workshops held at a public library in Melbourne in October 2019 and February 2020, where they were taught creative nonfiction writing techniques. They were asked to submit pieces of life writing (“narratives”) and reflections about participating in the study. Fifteen participants submitted one or more narratives in response to a prompt, and 10 participants provided reflections. Thematic analysis was used to code the data and identify themes that emerged. The participants’ processes of meaning-making were analysed using a performativity lens. This article explores the theme “sex and relationships” that emerged and the related sub-themes. The participants’ writing provided insights into sociocultural norms, discourses, and tropes, including those present in school-based sexuality education and in the media, that may impact the developing sexual subjectivities of young LGBTQ+ people in Australia. Engaging in life writing provided an outlet for developing self-knowledge, agency, and subjectivity. The findings can be used to promote the use of creative, youth-centred and queer-affirming practices and interventions for LGBTQ+ youth in school and community settings, including peer support and community health approaches. They indicate the need for de-pathologising the medicalised risk- and prevention-based interventions for LGBTQ+ youth in health and education research and policy, particularly around sexual and mental health. Cambrian sandstones comprise a large and saline-only aquifer that can be utilized for CO2 geological storage in the Baltic basin, including Lithuania. The two prospective storage sites with the most potential are located in west Lithuania. Despite the larger area of the Gargždai elevation (233 km2), the Syderiai uplift (62 km2) is characterized by the largest storage volume. The most significant difference between the studied structures is primarily related to the much higher reservoir quality of the Cambrian sandstones at the Syderiai site. The sandstones’ average porosity is 16% and their permeability measures 310 mD, while the Gargždai site is characterized by poor reservoir quality (average porosity of 7% and permeability as low as 10 mD in the sandstone). The main controlling parameter for the sandstones is authigenic quartz cementation. The reservoir type is classified as the porous sandstone type for the Syderiai site and as the fractured reservoir type for the Gargždai site. The storage volumes of CO2 of the sites were assessed as 56.7 Mt and 31.3 Mt, respectively. The present study determined that the Syderiai uplift was the prospective site with the most potential for the geological storage trapping of CO2, owing to its high reservoir quality, while the Gargždai elevation is characterized as a potential alternative for CO2 storage combined with EOR technology for oil exploitation, despite its poor reservoir quality. A log data analysis plays an important role in the uranium mining process. Automating this analysis using machine learning methods improves the results and reduces the influence of the human factor. In particular, the identification of reservoir oxidation zones (ROZs) using machine learning allows a more accurate determination of ore reserves, and correct lithological classification allows the optimization of the mining process. However, training and tuning machine learning models requires labeled datasets, which are hardly available for uranium deposits. In addition, in problems of interpreting logging data using machine learning, data preprocessing is of great importance, in other words, a transformation of the original dataset that allows improving the classification or prediction result. This paper describes a uranium well log (UWL) dataset generated with the employment of floating data windows and designed to solve the problems of identifying ROZ and lithological classification (LC) on sandstone-type uranium deposits. Comparative results of the ways of solving these problems using classical machine learning methods and ensembles of machine learning algorithms are presented. It has been shown that an increase in the size of the floating data window can improve the quality of ROZ classification by 7–9% and LC by 6–12%. As a result, the best-quality indicators for solving these problems were obtained, f1_score_macro = 0.744 (ROZ) and accuracy = 0.694 (LC), using the light gradient boosting machine and extreme gradient boosting, respectively. Approximately 50% of the world’s uranium is mined in a closed way using underground well leaching. In the process of uranium mining at formation-infiltration deposits, an important role is played by the correct identification of the formation of reservoir oxidation zones (ROZs), within which the uranium content is extremely low and which affect the determination of ore reserves and subsequent mining processes. The currently used methodology for identifying ROZs requires the use of highly skilled labor and resource-intensive studies using neutron fission logging; therefore, it is not always performed. At the same time, the available electrical logging measurements data collected in the process of geophysical well surveys and exploration well data can be effectively used to identify ROZs using machine learning models. This study presents a solution to the problem of detecting ROZs in uranium deposits using ensemble machine learning methods. This method provides an index of weighted harmonic measure (f1_weighted) in the range from 0.72 to 0.93 (XGB classifier), and sufficient stability at different ratios of objects in the input dataset. The obtained results demonstrate the potential for practical use of this method for detecting ROZs in formation-infiltration uranium deposits using ensemble machine learning. Full article

Background: Post-COVID services have been set up in England to treat children with ongoing symptoms of Long COVID. To date, the characteristics of children seeking treatment from these services has not been described. Purpose: (1) to describe the characteristics of children aged 11–17 referred to the Pan-London Post-COVID service and (2) to compare characteristics of these children with those taking part in the United Kingdom’s largest research study of Long COVID in children (CLoCk). Design: Data from 95 children seeking treatment from the Post-COVID service between May 2021 and August 2022 were included in the study. Their demographic characteristics, symptom burden and the impact of infection are described and compared to children from CLoCk. Results: A high proportion of children from the Post-COVID service and CLoCk reported experiencing health problems prior to the pandemic. Almost all Post-COVID service children met the research Delphi definition of Long COVID (94.6%), having multiple symptoms that impacted their lives. Symptoms were notably more severe than the participants in CLoCk. Conclusions: This study describes the characteristics of children seeking treatment for Long COVID compared to those identified in the largest longitudinal observational study to date. Post-COVID service children have more symptoms and are more severely affected by their symptoms following infection with COVID-19 than children in the CLoCk study. Research to understand predisposing factors for severity and prognostic indicators is essential to prevent this debilitating condition. Evaluation of short- and long-term outcomes of interventions by clinical services can help direct future therapy for this group. Full article

Aggregation of Tau protein into paired helical filaments causing neurofibrillary tangles (NFT) is a neuropathological feature in Alzheimer’s disease (AD). This study aimed to develop and evaluate the effectiveness of a novel radioiodinated tracer, 4-[125I]iodo-3-(1H-pyrrolo[2,3-c]pyridine-1-yl)pyridine ([125I]INFT), for binding to Tau protein in postmortem human AD brain. Radiosynthesis of [125I]INFT was carried out using electrophilic destannylation by iodine-125 and purified chromatographically. Computational modeling of INFT binding on Tau fibril was compared with IPPI. In vitro, autoradiography studies were conducted with [125I]INFT for Tau in AD and cognitively normal (CN) brains. [125I]INFT was produced in >95% purity. Molecular modeling of INFT revealed comparable binding energies to IPPI at site-1 of the Tau fibril with an affinity of IC50 = 7.3 × 10−8 M. Binding of [125I]INFT correlated with the presence of Tau in the AD brain, confirmed by anti-Tau immunohistochemistry. The ratio of average grey matter (GM) [125I]INFT in AD versus CN was found to be 5.9, and AD GM/white matter (WM) = 2.5. Specifically bound [125I]INFT to Tau in AD brains was displaced by IPPI (>90%). Monoamine oxidase inhibitor deprenyl had no effect and clorgyline had little effect on [125I]INFT binding. [125I]INFT is a less lipophilic imaging agent for Tau in AD. Full article

Background: Although 99% of children and young people have been exposed to SARS-CoV-2, the long-term prevalence of post-COVID-19 symptoms in young people is unclear. The aim of this study is to describe symptom profiles 12 months after SARS-CoV-2 testing. Method: A matched cohort study of a national sample of 20,202 children and young people who took a SARS-CoV-2 PCR test between September 2020 and March 2021. Results: 12 months post-index-test, there was a difference in the number of symptoms reported by initial negatives who never tested positive (NN) compared to the other three groups who had at least one positive test (p < 0.001). Similarly, 10.2% of the NN group described five-plus symptoms at 12 months compared to 15.9–24.0% in the other three groups who had at least one positive test. The most common symptoms were tiredness, sleeping difficulties, shortness of breath, and headaches for all four groups. For all these symptoms, the initial test positives with subsequent reports of re-infection had higher prevalences than other positive groups (p < 0.001). Symptom profiles, mental health, well-being, fatigue, and quality of life did not vary by vaccination status. High-resolution scans of immunohistochemical (IHC) stains of Alzheimer’s disease (AD) brain slices and radioligand autoradiography both provide information about the distribution of Aβ plaques and Tau, the two common proteinopathies in AD. Accurate assessment of the amount and regional location of Aβ plaques and Tau is essential to understand the progression of AD pathology. Our goal was to develop a quantitative method for the analysis of IHC–autoradiography images. Postmortem anterior cingulate (AC) and corpus callosum (CC) from AD and control (CN) subjects were IHC stained with anti-Aβ for Aβ plaques and autoradiography with [18F]flotaza and [125I]IBETA for Aβ plaques. For Tau, [124I]IPPI, a new radiotracer, was synthesized and evaluated in the AD brain. For Tau imaging, brain slices were IHC stained with anti-Tau and autoradiography using [125I]IPPI and [124I]IPPI. Annotations for Aβ plaques and Tau using QuPath for training and pixel classifiers were generated to measure the percent of the area of Aβ plaques and Tau in each slice. The binding of [124I]IPPI was observed in all AD brains with an AC/CC ratio > 10. Selectivity to Tau was shown by blocking [124I]IPPI with MK-6240. Percent positivity for Aβ plaques was 4–15%, and for Tau, it was 1.3 to 35%. All IHC Aβ plaque-positive subjects showed [18F]flotaza and [125I]IBETA binding with a positive linear correlation (r2 > 0.45). Tau-positive subjects showed [124/125I]IPPI binding with a stronger positive linear correlation (r2 > 0.80). This quantitative IHC–autoradiography approach provides an accurate measurement of Aβ plaques and Tau within and across subjects. Full article

This study determines and presents the capital and operating costs imposed by the use of CO2 capture technologies in the refining and petrochemical sectors. Depending on the refining process and the CO2 capture method, CO2 emissions costs of EUR 30 to 40 per ton of CO2 can be avoided. Advanced low-temperature CO2 capture technologies for upgrading oxyfuel reformers may not provide any significant long-term and short-term benefits compared to conventional technologies. For this reason, an analysis was performed to estimate the CO2 reduction potential for the oil and gas industries using short- and long-term ST/MT technologies, was arriving at a reduction potential of about 0.5–1 Gt/yr. The low cost of CO2 reduction is a result of the good integration of CO2 capture into the oil production process. The results show that advanced gasoline fraction recovery with integrated CO2 capture can reduce the cost of producing petroleum products and reduce CO2 emissions, while partial CO2 capture has comparative advantages in some cases. Crop simulation models can be effective tools to assist with optimization of resources for a particular agroecological zone. The goal of this study was to determine the influence of N rates with different timing of application to wheat crop using prominent varieties using the CSM-CERES-Wheat model of the decision support system for agrotechnology transfer (DSSAT). Data were focused for yield traits, i.e., number of tillers, number of grains, grain weight, grain yield, biomass, and grain N content. To test the applicability of the CSM-CERES-Wheat version 4.7.5 model for agroclimatic conditions of Peshawar, Pakistan, experimental data from two years of experiments (2016–17 and 2017–18) were used for model calibration and evaluation. The simulation results of two years agreed well with field measured data for three commercial varieties. The model efficiency (R2) for wheat varieties was above 0.94 for variables tiller number per unit area (m−2), number of grains (m−2) and number of grains (spike−1), 1000 grain weight (mg), biomass weight (kg ha−1), grain yield (kg ha−1), and harvest N content (kg ha−1). Statistics of cultivars indicated that yield traits, yield, and N can be simulated efficiently for agroecological conditions of Peshawar. Moreover, different N rates and application timings suggested that the application of 140 kg N ha−1 with triple splits timings, i.e., 25% at the sowing, 50% at the tillering, and 25% at the booting stage of the crop, resulted in the maximum yield and N recovery for different commercial wheat varieties. Simulated N losses, according to the model, were highly determined by leaching for experimental conditions where a single N application of 100% or existing double splits timing was applied. The study concluded that 140 kg N ha−1 is most appropriate for wheat crop grown on clay loam soils under a flood irrigation system. However, the N fertilizer has to be given in triple splits of a 1:2:1 ratio at the sowing, tillering, and booting stages of the crop growth. Full article

Background: COVID-19, caused by the novel coronavirus SARS-CoV-2, was declared by WHO in early 2020 as a worldwide pandemic. Several known risk markers are associated with COVID-19 morbidity and mortality, including age, gender, and diseases, such as hypertension, diabetes, and chronic cardiovascular diseases. Recent studies have shown an association between COVID-19 infection and the ABO blood groups. Objective: To assess the prevalence of SARS-CoV-2 among suspected COVID-19 patients as well as the risk markers for COVID-19 associated with ABO blood group, Rhesus factor, and patient’s address during the past year. Methods: 69,019 nasopharyngeal swab samples were collected and analyzed by reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction technique for the detection of SARS-CoV-2 in patients attending a tertiary health care center in South Lebanon during the period between August 2020 and July 2021. Results: Among all tested subjects, the prevalence of SARS-CoV-2 infection was 19.2% (95% CI: 18.9% to 19.5%). Among those with known blood group (N = 17,462), odds of SARS-CoV-2 were higher in group A (Odds Ratio = 1.12, 95% CI: 1.02 to 1.23) and group AB (OR = 1.19, 95% CI: 1.00 to 1.41) relative to the reference group O (OR = 1). Odds of SARS-CoV-2 in the Rh-negative group (OR = 1.02, 95% CI: 0.89 to 1.16) were not significantly different from the Rh-positive group. Among those with known address (N = 30,060), odds of SARS-CoV-2 were lower in residents of remote areas (OR = 0.89, 95% CI: 0.80 to 0.99) relative to central cities. Conclusion: There is a modestly higher risk of SARS-CoV-2 infection associated with blood groups A and AB, and a lower risk associated with living in remote, less crowded regions. Full article
