In this study, under varying PDSP (plunging depths of stirring pin) and process parameters, refill friction stir spot welding tests were performed on 6061-T6 aluminum alloy, relying on a stirring tool with a 12 mm sleeve diameter and an 8 mm stirring pin diameter. The results manifested the internal defects in the weld zone when PDSP was 0, notwithstanding the alterations in process parameters. However, these flaws disappeared when PDSP was 0.5 mm and 1 mm. In the weld zone, PDSP exerted a dramatic effect on the internal metal flow state, particularly the curvature of the “Hook” shape and the width of the bonding ligament. It changed the downward bending of the ‘Hook’ into an upward one, influencing the fracture behavior of the weld zone and elevating the ULSF (ultimate lap shear force) by up to 20% (PDSP = 0.5 mm, welding speed = 30 mm/min, rotation speed is 1200 rpm). Besides, the PDSP intensified the PAZ (pin affected zone) pressure, induced more metal flowing into the SAZ (sleeve affected zone), thus reinforced the SAZ-TMAZ(thermomechanically affected zone) bonding strength, and upgraded the region’s microhardness. In summary, the PDSP is commendable for bolstering the weld zone’s performance, but excessively large PDSP values incur drastic indentations in the PAZ, which diminish the ULSF. Full article

In a hydropower station, equipment needs maintenance to ensure safe, stable, and efficient operation. And the essence of equipment maintenance is a disassembly sequence planning problem. However, the complexity arises from the vast number of components in a hydropower station, leading to a significant proliferation of potential combinations, which poses considerable challenges when devising optimal solutions for the maintenance process. Consequently, to improve maintenance efficiency and decrease maintenance time, a discrete whale optimization algorithm (DWOA) is proposed in this paper to achieve excellent parallel disassembly sequence planning (PDSP). To begin, composite nodes are added into the constraint relationship graph based on the characteristics of hydropower equipment, and disassembly time is chosen as the optimization objective. Subsequently, the DWOA is proposed to solve the PDSP problem by integrating the precedence preservative crossover mechanism, heuristic mutation mechanism, and repetitive pairwise exchange operator. Meanwhile, the hierarchical combination method is used to swiftly generate the initial population. To verify the viability of the proposed algorithm, a classic genetic algorithm (GA), simplified teaching–learning-based optimization (STLBO), and self-adaptive simplified swarm optimization (SSO) were employed for comparison in three maintenance projects. The experimental results and comparative analysis revealed that the proposed PDSP with DWOA achieved a reduced disassembly time of only 19.96 min in Experiment 3. Additionally, the values for standard deviation, average disassembly time, and the rate of minimum disassembly time were 0.3282, 20.31, and 71%, respectively, demonstrating its superior performance compared to the other algorithms. Furthermore, the method proposed in this paper addresses the inefficiencies in dismantling processes in hydropower stations and enhances visual representation for maintenance training by integrating Unity3D with intelligent algorithms. GABA mediates inhibitory actions through various GABAA receptor subtypes, including 19 subunits in human GABAAR. Dysregulation of GABAergic neurotransmission is associated with several psychiatric disorders, including depression, anxiety, and schizophrenia. Selective targeting of α2/3 GABAARs can treat mood and anxiety, while α5 GABAA-Rs can treat anxiety, depression, and cognitive performance. GL-II-73 and MP-III-022, α5-positive allosteric modulators have shown promising results in animal models of chronic stress, aging, and cognitive disorders, including MDD, schizophrenia, autism, and Alzheimer’s disease. Described in this article is how small changes in the structure of imidazodiazepine substituents can greatly impact the subtype selectivity of benzodiazepine GABAAR. To investigate alternate and potentially more effective therapeutic compounds, modifications were made to the structure of imidazodiazepine 1 to synthesize different amide analogs. The novel ligands were screened at the NIMH PDSP against a panel of 47 receptors, ion channels, including hERG, and transporters to identify on- and off-target interactions. Any ligands with significant inhibition in primary binding were subjected to secondary binding assays to determine their Ki values. The newly synthesized imidazodiazepines were found to have variable affinities for the benzodiazepine site and negligible or no binding to any off-target profile receptors that could cause other physiological problems. A receive signal strength (RSS) fingerprinting-based indoor wireless localization system (I-WLS) uses a localization machine learning (ML) algorithm to estimate the location of an indoor user using RSS measurements as the position-dependent signal parameter (PDSP). There are two stages in the system’s localization process: the offline phase and the online phase. The offline phase starts with the collection and generation of RSS measurement vectors from radio frequency (RF) signals received at fixed reference locations, followed by the construction of an RSS radio map. In the online phase, the instantaneous location of an indoor user is found by searching the RSS-based radio map for a reference location whose RSS measurement vector corresponds to the user’s instantaneously acquired RSS measurements. The performance of the system depends on a number of factors that are present in both the online and offline stages of the localization process. This survey identifies these factors and examines how they impact the overall performance of the 2-dimensional (2-D) RSS fingerprinting-based I-WLS. The effects of these factors are discussed, as well as previous researchers’ suggestions for minimizing or mitigating them and future research trends in RSS fingerprinting-based I-WLS. Full article

Transmission capacity and receiver sensitivity of an intensity-modulation direct detection (IM-DD) optical discrete multi-tone (DMT) system can be improved by using the probabilistically shaping (PS) technique. However, different probabilistic distributions will be required owing to the unbalanced signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) among data-carrying subcarriers (SCs) induced by the imperfect frequency response of optical/electrical devices, which can increase the implementation complexity of the PS-DMT transceiver. In this work, different signal pre-processing schemes including pre-equalization, Walsh–Hadamard transform (WHT)-based full data-carrying SCs precoding (FDSP) and fast WHT-based partial data-carrying SCs precoding (PDSP) are investigated for SNR equalization in a short-reach PS-DMT transmission system. After transmission over 50 km single-mode fiber, the experimental results indicated that three pre-processed signals have almost the same generalized mutual information (GMI) performance and receiver sensitivity improvements. The proposed fast WHT-based PDSP scheme may be a good option for the implementation of the PS-DMT transmission systems with a large SC SNR fluctuation regarding computational complexity. Full article

Down Syndrome (DS) is a neurodevelopmental disorder that is characterized by an accelerated aging process, frequently associated with the development of Alzheimer’s disease (AD). Previous studies evidenced that DS patients have various metabolic anomalies, easily measurable in their serum samples, although values that were found in DS patients were compared with those of age-matched non-DS patients, thus hampering to discriminate the physiologic age-related changes of serum metabolites from those that are truly caused by the pathologic processes associated with DS. In the present study we performed a targeted metabolomic evaluation of serum samples from DS patients without dementia of two age classes (Younger DS Patients, YDSP, aging 20–40 years; Aged DS Patients, ADSP, aging 41–60 years), comparing the results with those that were obtained in two age classes of non-DS patients (Younger non-DS Patients, YnonDSP, aging 30–60 years; Aged-nonDS Patients, AnonDSP, aging 75–90 years). Of the 36 compounds assayed, 30 had significantly different concentrations in Pooled non-DS Patients (PnonDSP), compared to Pooled DS Patients (PDSP). Age categorization revealed that 11/30 compounds were significantly different in AnonDSP, compared to YnonDSP, indicating physiologic, age-related changes of their circulating concentrations. A comparison between YDSP and ADSP showed that 19/30 metabolites had significantly different values from those found in the corresponding classes of non-DS patients, strongly suggesting pathologic, DS-associated alterations of their serum levels. Twelve compounds selectively and specifically discriminated PnonDSP from PDSP, whilst only three discriminated YDSP from ADSP. The results allowed to determine, for the first time and to the best of our knowledge, the true, age-independent alterations of metabolism that are measurable in serum and attributable only to DS. These findings may be of high relevance for better strategies (pharmacological, nutritional) aiming to specifically target the dysmetabolism and decreased antioxidant defenses that are associated with DS. In the past few years, parallel digital signal processing (PDSP) architectures have been intensively studied to fulfill the growing demand of channel capacity in coherent optical communication systems. However, to our knowledge, real-time timing synchronization in such architectures is until now not implemented on a Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA). In this article, a parallel timing synchronization architecture is proposed. In the architecture, a parallel First In First Out (FIFO) structure based on an index associated rearranging method, and a dual feedback loop based on the Gardner’s algorithm, are adopted. Taking advantages of the FIFO structure, 67% Look Up Table (LUT) is saved in comparison with earlier results, meanwhile the Numerically Controlled Oscillator (NCO) is efficiently improved to meet the FPGA timing requirements for real-time performance. MATLAB simulations are run to evaluate the Bit Error Rate (BER) deterioration of the architecture. The float- and fixed-point simulation results have shown that, The BER deteriorations are less than 0.5 dB and 1 dB, respectively. Further, the implementation of the architecture on a Xilinx XC7VX485T FPGA chip is achieved. A 20 giga bit per second (Gbps) 16 Quadrature Amplitude Modulation (16QAM) real-time system is achieved at the system clock of 159.524 MHz. This work opens a new pathway to improve the transmission capacity in real-time wireless communication systems. Full article
