Plants are crucial for sustaining community livelihood and should be thoroughly integrated into education; however, students often suffer from Plant Awareness Disparity (PAD). This phenomenon causes students to fail to appreciate the value of plants, often because they fail to notice or value them in their surroundings. Although numerous interventions have been suggested to address PAD, we still lack a comprehensive instrument with which to measure the interconnectedness of plant awareness knowledge and the effectiveness of such interventions. To address this gap, this study developed and validated a new scale to measure plant awareness knowledge in elementary school students. We used the Nipa palm (Nypa fruticans Wurmb) as a specific case study within the Pak Phanang Basin of Nakhon Si Thammarat Province, Thailand. This study was conducted in two phases, following the standards for education and psychology testing. In the first phase, a systematic literature review based on the Plants, People, and Planet (PPP) concept was used to identify the dimensions and components of the scale. In the second phase, the scale was developed, and its construct validity was analyzed through exploratory factor analysis (EFA) and confirmatory factor analysis (CFA). The EFA and CFA provided evidence of a three-factor structure, confirming three distinct yet correlated dimensions of plant knowledge. The three subscales are as follows: Nature of Life, which focuses on students’ knowledge of the physical and biological characteristics of the plant; Interconnectedness of All Things, which measures knowledge of the plant’s relationship with its ecosystem and the community’s way of life; and Greatest Public Benefit, which assesses knowledge of the plant’s economic and cultural value to the community. The scale, comprising 13 items, demonstrated satisfactory internal consistency, with Cronbach’s alpha values above 0.75 across the three subscales. These findings provide educators with a valuable tool for assessing plant awareness and implementing interventions that foster ecological literacy and community sustainability. Full article

In Thailand, nipa palm (Nypa fruticans Wurmb) is considered a plant of great value to communities due to its social, environmental, and economic benefits. Effective management of the supply chain of products derived from nipa palm resources is essential to providing communities with suitable channels for selling each type of product and deriving maximum benefits. This study sought to map the supply chain structure of six different nipa palm products. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews with 30 farmers and 20 middlemen engaged in nipa palm cultivation and marketing. The analysis focused on the characteristics of the products, challenges associated with production and marketing, and the current supply chain dynamics. The findings revealed that among six products, palm sugar had the highest production volume. The most significant challenges identified were related to labor shortages and limited marketing channels. To achieve sustainable supply chain management, it is crucial to maintain a balance between the supply and demand of nipa palm products. This study recommends exploring appropriate marketing channels for each product, with particular emphasis on online platforms that allow communities to sell directly to consumers without intermediaries. Moreover, the findings underscore the importance of sustainable supply chain management at the community level, particularly in enhancing operational efficiency and income generation. They also highlight the need to expand knowledge and propose policy support for existing community enterprises through targeted investment in infrastructure, skill development, and the promotion of inclusive, community-based marketing strategies. Nypa fruticans, commonly known as the Nipa palm, belongs to the true mangrove plants of the Arecaceae family. In China, it is naturally distributed only on Hainan Island and designated as a second-class National Key Protected Wild Plants List. Field research and indoor simulation experiments were systematically employed to study the resource status of N. fruticans and the adaptation of seed germination to environmental factors. The results showed that: (1) Four natural populations of N. fruticans, approximately 9319 trees within a total area of 3.96 hm2, were distributed in Haikou, Wenchang, Qionghai, and Wanning on Hainan Island. Only the Wanning population was developed in small patches, while other populations were scattered sporadically. (2) A total of 23 mangrove species belonged to 19 genera in 13 families, which were recorded in all study sites, of which 18 were true mangroves and 5 were semi-mangrove species. The vertical structures of 4 N. fruticans communities exhibited the consistent pattern, characterized by distinct layers including the tree, shrub, and herb layers. However, notable differences in species composition and dominant species were observed among the layers of each community. (3) The population dynamics of N. fruticans in Haikou, Qionghai, and Wanning were declining, while the population in Wenchang was growing. (4) Seed germination of N. fruticans was not resistant to strong light and required some shade treatment with an optimal light intensity of 60%. The suitable salinity range for seed germination was 0‰ to 10‰. With the increase of salinity, the germination rate and seedling rate showed an increasing and then decreasing trend with maximum values of 63.3% and 50.0% at 5‰, which showed the sensitivity of seed germination to salinity, with low salinity promoting germination whereas high salinity inhibiting germination. Around 8 h/d of flooding time was most suitable for the seed germination, and 10 h/d was a critical flooding time. This study provides a theoretical basis for population recovery, resource utilization, and other further research of N. fruticans. Full article

Nipa palm vinegar (NPV) is a naturally fermented vinegar derived from the nipa palm (Nypa fruticans Wurmb) sap. This work optimized production of spray-dried nipa palm vinegar powder. The influence of the various drier air inlet temperatures (150, 170, and 190 °C) and maltodextrin DE10 carrier concentrations (15 and 20% w/v) in the feed, on the characteristics of the product powder was investigated. Nipa palm vinegar powder (NPVp) was evaluated in terms of the following responses: physicochemical and nutritional properties, sensory acceptability, and storage stability. All processing variables affected the responses. Based on product desirability as the optimization criterion, spray-drying with a hot air inlet temperature of 170 °C with a 15% w/v maltodextrin DE10 in the feed was optimal. The nutritional characteristics of the product made under the above identified optimal conditions were (per 100 g dry product): a calorific value of 366.2 kcal; 1.3 g protein; 88.1 g carbohydrate; 0.96 g fat; 883.9 mg potassium; 12.7 mg vitamin C; and 105 mg gallic acid equivalent (GAE) phenolics content. The product, vacuum-packed and heat-sealed in aluminum laminated polyethylene bags, could be stored at 25 °C for at least 180 days without noticeable loss in quality. Full article

Peripheral nerve injury can result in severe functional impairment and decreased quality of life due to loss of sensory and motor function. Nypa fruticans wurmb (NF) has been used in diverse folk remedies in East Asia. We have previously shown that Nypa fruticans wurmb extract has antinociceptive and anti-inflammatory effects by suppressing TRPV1 in the sciatic nerve injury. The present study investigated the effects of NF on the control of TRPV1 in relation to neuroprotective effects of a sciatic nerve crush injury. To evaluate the neuroprotective effects, an animal behavior test and a physiological function test were performed. Functional recovery and nerve recovery were improved in the NF and NF + SB (SB366791; TRPV1 antagonist) treated group. In the histomorphology evaluation, the neuronal regenerative effect of NF on the injured sciatic nerve was confirmed via hematoxylin and eosin (H&E) staining. In this study, the NF and NF + SB treated group showed neuroprotective and functional recovery effects from the sciatic nerve crush injury. Furthermore, the expression of NF-κB and iNOS showed a significantly suppressive effect on NF (p < 0.01), SB (p < 0.01), and NF + SB (p < 0.01) treated group at the 7th and 14th day compared to the vehicle group. This study confirmed the neuroprotective effects of NF on suppressing TRPV1 in a sciatic nerve crush injury. The findings of this study establish the effect of NF as a neurotherapeutic agent to protect the peripheral nerve after a sciatic nerve crush injury. Full article

Neuropathic pain is generally characterized by sensory abnormalities such as sensory disorders, hyperalgesia, and allodynia. Recent studies have reported that TRPV1 activation is essential for establishing of inflammation in the neuropathy pain models, showing that the expression of this receptor is increased, and contributing to enhanced thermal sensitivity. Nypa fruticans Wurmb (NF), which was used as a folk remedy, is a plant that is gaining attention due to its various effects. In this study, we investigated the antinociceptive and anti-inflammatory effects of NFE (Nypa fruticans Wurmb extracts) by controlling the neurological function of TRPV1. In sciatic crush injury rat models, a significant level of antinociceptive effect was observed in the thermal hyperalgesia test in which NF extracts (NFE 500 mg/kg) were orally administered, daily. Protein quantification of the sciatic nerve and the of the L4–L6 spinal cord showed a decrease of the TRPV1 expression, the inflammatory expression factor, COX2, and proinflammatory factors in the NFE treated groups. Our results indicate that NFE affects antinociceptive and anti-inflammatory by controlling TRPV1 in sciatic neuropathic pain models. Full article

Background: An aqueous extract (AE) of vinegar made from Nypa fruticans Wurmb. can improve postprandial glucose levels in normoglycaemic rats. The aim of this study was to evaluate its antihyperglycaemic activity further using in vivo and in vitro approaches. Methods: AE was administered to streptozotocin (STZ)-induced diabetic rats twice daily at three doses (1000, 500, and 250 mg/kg b.w.) for 12 days p.o. Several biochemical analyses and a histological study of the pancreas and liver were performed, accompanied by a cell culture assay. Results: As compared to diabetic control (DC), AE at the doses of 500 and 1000 mg/kg b.w. caused significant reduction (p < 0.05) of blood glucose, total cholesterol and triglycerides levels, with positive improvement of serum insulin levels. Interestingly, immunohistochemical staining of the pancreas suggested no β-cell regeneration, despite significant increase in insulin production. AE-treated groups, however, showed overall restoration of the hepatic histoarchitecture of STZ-induced liver damage, suggesting a possible hepatoprotective effect. The pancreatic effect of AE was further studied through RIN-5F cell culture, which revealed a positive stimulatory effect on insulin release at a basal glucose concentration (1.1 mM). Conclusion: Nypa fruticans Wurmb. vinegar’s aqueous extract exerts its antihyperglycaemic activity, at least in part, through insulin stimulatory and hepatoprotective effects. Full article

Nypa fruticans Wurmb. vinegar, commonly known as nipa palm vinegar (NPV) has been used as a folklore medicine among the Malay community to treat diabetes. Early work has shown that aqueous extract (AE) of NPV exerts a potent antihyperglycemic effect. Thus, this study is conducted to evaluate the effect of AE on postprandial hyperglycemia in an attempt to understand its mechanism of antidiabetic action. AE were tested via in vitro intestinal glucose absorption, in vivo carbohydrate tolerance tests and spectrophotometric enzyme inhibition assays. One mg/mL of AE showed a comparable outcome to the use of phloridzin (1 mM) in vitro as it delayed glucose absorption through isolated rat jejunum more effectively than acarbose (1 mg/mL). Further in vivo confirmatory tests showed AE (500 mg/kg) to cause a significant suppression in postprandial hyperglycemia 30 min following respective glucose (2 g/kg), sucrose (4 g/kg) and starch (3 g/kg) loadings in normal rats, compared to the control group. Conversely, in spectrophotometric enzymatic assays, AE showed rather a weak inhibitory activity against both α-glucosidase and α-amylase when compared with acarbose. The findings suggested that NPV exerts its anti-diabetic effect by delaying carbohydrate absorption from the small intestine through selective inhibition of intestinal glucose transporters, therefore suppressing postprandial hyperglycemia.
