Advanced three-dimensional extended reality (XR) technologies are highly suitable for cultural heritage research and education. XR tools enable the creation of realistic virtual or augmented reality applications for curating and disseminating information about cultural artifacts and sites. Developing XR applications for cultural heritage requires interdisciplinary collaboration involving strong teamwork and soft skills to manage user requirements, system specifications, and design cycles. Given the diverse end-users, achieving high precision, accuracy, and efficiency in information management and user experience is crucial. Human–computer interaction (HCI) design and evaluation methods are essential for ensuring usability and return on investment. This article presents ten case studies of cultural heritage software projects, illustrating the interdisciplinary work between computer science and HCI design. Students from institutions such as the State University of New York (USA), Glasgow School of Art (UK), University of Granada (Spain), University of Málaga (Spain), Duy Tan University (Vietnam), Imperial College London (UK), Research University Institute of Communication & Computer Systems (Greece), Technical University of Košice (Slovakia), and Indiana University (USA) contributed to creating, assessing, and improving the usability of these diverse cultural heritage applications. The results include a structured typology of CH XR application scenarios, detailed insights into design and evaluation practices across ten international use cases, and a development framework that supports interdisciplinary collaboration and stakeholder integration in phygital cultural heritage projects. Background/Objectives: Sexual health research involving young adolescents remains scarce despite rising rates of early sexual debut, pregnancies, and sexually transmitted infections (STIs) in this population. We explored community stakeholders’ perspectives on engaging young adolescents in sexual health research in Western New York to inform strategies for engaging young adolescents in sexual health research. Methods: This qualitative descriptive study was conducted from April 2022 to June 2023. Seventeen community stakeholders, including health education teachers, youth counselors, and adolescent health providers, participated in semi-structured in-depth interviews. Data were analyzed using conventional content analysis, managed by MAXQDA 2020. The rigor and trustworthiness of the data were ensured through triangulation with observations, peer debriefing, team analysis, and respondent validation. Results: Participants were predominantly female (94.1%), 52.9% Black/African American, 41.2% White, and 5.9% Caucasian–Indian American, and aged 23–59 years. Four themes emerged: perspectives on conducting sexual health research with young adolescents, recruitment strategies, sexual health questions appropriate for young adolescents, and building readiness for participation in sexual health research. Participants reported the need for sexual health research with young adolescents and recommended building a trusting relationship and involving schools, parents, and trusted community organizations in the research process. Suggested research questions included those related to awareness of sex, STIs, available resources, experiences with sexual education, and desired support. The findings also revealed the need to initiate sexual health conversations early when children start asking questions, as a foundation for meaningful participation in sexual health research. Conclusions: The findings suggest that sexual health research with young adolescents is feasible and necessary, with implications for the design of developmentally appropriate sexual health research and interventions grounded in trust and community collaboration. Future research should explore the perspectives of caregivers and young adolescents to inform studies and programs that are attuned to young adolescents’ developmental needs. Full article

This essay argues that several of Bernadette Mayer’s major works foreground and develop experiences of subjective time as moments of resistance to the standardizing force of objective clock and calendric time that governs daily material existence. Basing my argument on a framework for subjective time developed in the field of linguistics, I show how Mayer’s play with duration, temporal recursiveness, and moments of stopped time in works including Memory, Midwinter Day, Works and Days, and Milkweed Smithereens function as subversions of the normative material every day, and I argue that throughout her work Mayer is preoccupied with not merely representing time, its content, and its passage, but rather with gaining mastery over objective time and subverting its authority altogether. This essay joins the scant research on time and temporality in Mayer’s work and offers an invitation to further study of subjective time as a mode of resistance in contemporary poetry. Full article

Background/Objectives: The educational needs of individuals with OA and obesity can drive personalized resources for effective dietary interventions that align patient interests with weight and disease management. Therefore, the purpose of the present study was to evaluate differences in nutritional education topics of interest between patients with OA who are characterized as having higher (≥30 kg/m2; HBMI) and lower BMI (<30 kg/m2; LBMI). Methods: Cross-sectional survey data (n = 296) were dichotomized into HBMI (n = 172; BMI: 38.67 ± 6.59 kg/m2) and LBMI (n = 124; BMI: 25.59 ± 3.00 kg/m2) groups. A mixed-method approach examined group differences across four primary domains: (i) strategies for weight management and healthy lifestyle, (ii) interest in vitamins and supplements, (iii) foods and nutrient with anti-inflammatory properties, and (iv) dietary patterns for weight loss. Logistic regression models compared topic interests between groups. Thematic analysis of open-ended responses captured additional insights. Results: Compared to LBMI participants, those in the HBMI group showed greater interest in weight loss strategies, emotional eating, and diets such as low-carbohydrate and ketogenic approaches, but less interest in general supplement information and plant-based diets. HBMI also had greater interest in practical strategies (e.g., feeling full, affordable foods) and reduced interest in certain anti-inflammatory foods. Both groups expressed a desire for evidence-based resources on foods that promote joint health. Conclusions: BMI-specific differences in nutritional education preferences highlight the need for tailored, patient-centered strategies in OA management. Addressing these differences may improve the effectiveness of education interventions and enhance patient–provider communication around diet and lifestyle in OA care. Full article

Introduction: Gentrification, commonly defined as low-socioeconomic-status (SES) neighborhoods experiencing rapid increases in rental value, can lead to changes in the built and social neighborhood environment. Schools are an important location for pollutant exposure and child opportunities because children spend significant time in school. Given their central role in both environmental and social contexts, we examined the relationship between gentrification, pollutants, and child opportunity near schools in New York City. Methods: School locations (Ntotal = 1482) were classified into gentrifying (n = 624), non-gentrifying (n = 198), and higher-SES (ineligible for gentrification; n = 660) neighborhoods. Annual average pollutant levels (black carbon (BC), fine particulates (PM2.5), nitrogen dioxide (NO2)) were assessed near schools. Child opportunity index (COI 2.0) was used to evaluate overall opportunity and three domains: education; health/environment; social/economic. Results: On average, pollution was highest in gentrifying neighborhoods compared to non-gentrifying (5–8.6% difference) and higher-SES (4.8–14.8% difference) neighborhoods. Average air pollution levels remained consistently higher in gentrifying neighborhoods both before and after gentrification compared to non-gentrifying and higher-SES neighborhoods. Regarding childhood opportunity, education, and social/economic opportunities were better and health/environment opportunities were worse in gentrifying compared to non-gentrifying neighborhoods. Conclusions: Gentrifying neighborhoods are at risk for higher exposure to pollutants and lower health/environment childhood opportunities compared to other neighborhoods. Full article

The Florentine architect Vittorio Giorgini (1926–2010) graduated in 1957 from his hometown School of Architecture. During the 1950s and 1960s, he came to maturity in the lively cultural climate of Florence. Giorgini’s design process was based on the direct observation of natural structures. He coined the term “Spatiology” to define his studies of morphology. In 1969, he moved to New York City, where he worked as a professor of Architecture and Planning at the Pratt Institute until 1996. Giorgini took part in the artistic and cultural life of the Big Apple, and here, he frequented and formed a series of friendships with personalities of notable stature (John M. Johansen, Isamu Noguchi, Buckminster Fuller). The aim of the latter is to investigate Giorgini’s USA period (1969–1996), which constituted a far-reaching design phase beginning in the Seventies. In particular, it is very interesting to study the relationships Giorgini established with architects, artists, and intellectuals in New York that constituted a source of seduction and inspiration for his design process. The research focuses on the “Made in USA” projects that were never built, in which the formal interpretation of natural organisms consisted mainly of tetrahedral and octahedral meshes. Full article

Post-COVID-19 Barriers and Attitudes Associated with Online College Course Selection

During COVID-19 “lockdown” most high school and college students experienced a sudden ending of face-to-face classes and were forced into multiple, rapidly prepared online courses. These experiences produced students more knowledgeable about online education than ever before. With this came a degree of certainty regarding their future educational delivery preferences. This survey (2021–2024) examined the attitudes and barriers associated with online course selection at a university within the State University of New York (SUNY) system. Using an introductory nutrition course, 658 surveys were exclusively collected from the face-to-face sections of a Natural Science course. Only 30.2% of these students reported a preference for online courses. Respondents reported similar percentages on Course Difficulty (48.5% online vs. 51.5% face-to-face) and which course required more Work/Time (43.2% online vs. 56.8% face-to-face). Previous negative online experiences were affirmed by 27.4% of the students. Importantly, only 14.5% self-reported a better academic performance in online courses. Major online avoidance variables were boredom (53.1%), inferior learning (52.9%), and communication limitations (43.0%). Surprisingly, 67.7% stated they would consider taking future online courses. Understanding post-COVID-19 student attitudes and barriers provides useful information and should be part of any comprehensive approach to future online education design and implementation. Preeclampsia (PE) is a major cause of maternal mortality and morbidity, affecting 3–6% of pregnancies worldwide and ranking among the top six causes of maternal deaths in the U.S. PE typically develops after 20 weeks of gestation and is characterized by new-onset hypertension and/or end-organ dysfunction, with or without proteinuria. Current management strategies for PE emphasize early diagnosis, blood pressure control, and timely delivery. For prevention, low-dose aspirin (81 mg/day) is recommended for high-risk women between 12 and 28 weeks of gestation. Magnesium sulfate is also advised to prevent seizures in preeclamptic women at risk of eclampsia. Emerging management approaches include antiangiogenic therapies, hypoxia-inducible factor suppression, statins, and supplementation with CoQ10, nitric oxide, and hydrogen sulfide donors. Black women are at particularly high risk for PE, potentially due to higher rates of hypertension and cholesterol, compounded by healthcare disparities and possible genetic factors, such as the APOL1 gene. This review explores current and emerging strategies for managing PE and addresses the underlying causes of health disparities, offering potential solutions to improve outcomes. Full article

Glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists (GLP-1RAs) reduce bodyweight and blood glucose. Extensive evidence from randomized controlled trials has indicated that GLP-1RAs have benefits well beyond weight loss and glucose control, extending from reductions in cardiovascular mortality to reductions in prostate cancer risk. Notably, some benefits of GLP-1RAs for the cardiovascular–kidney–metabolic (CKM) system arise before weight loss occurs for reasons that are not entirely clear but are key to patient care and drug development. Here, we hypothesize that GLP-1RAs act by inducing calorie restriction and by activating adenosine monophosphate-activated protein kinase (AMPK), which not only provides an explanation for the unique effectiveness of GLP-1RAs but also indicates a common mechanism shared by effective CKM therapies, including salicylates, metformin, statins, healthy diet, and physical activity. Whether AMPK activation is obligatory for effective CKM therapies should be considered. As such, we propose a mechanism of action for GLP-1RAs and explain how it provides an overarching framework for identifying means of preventing and treating cardiovascular, kidney, metabolic and related diseases, as well as informing the complementary question as to the components of a healthy lifestyle. Methionine aminopeptidase 2 (MetAP2) plays an important role in the regulation of protein synthesis and post-translational processing. Preclinical/clinical applications of MetAP2 inhibitors for the treatment of various diseases have been explored because of their antiangiogenic, anticancer, antiobesity, antidiabetic, and immunosuppressive properties. However, the effects of MetAP2 inhibitors on CNS diseases are rarely examined despite the abundant presence of MetAP2 in the brain. Previously, we synthesized a novel boron-containing MetAP2 inhibitor, BL6, and found that it suppressed angiogenesis and adipogenesis yet improved glucose uptake. Here, we studied the anti-inflammatory effects of BL6 in SIM-A9 microglia and in a mouse model of Alzheimer’s disease generated by the intracerebroventricular (icv) injection of streptozotocin (STZ). We found that BL6 reduced proinflammatory molecules, such as nitric oxide, iNOS, IL-1β, and IL-6, together with phospho-Akt and phospho-NF-κB p65, which were elevated in lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-activated microglial SIM-A9 cells. However, the LPS-induced reduction in Arg-1 and CD206 was attenuated by BL6, suggesting that BL6 promotes microglial M1 to M2 polarization. BL6 also decreased glial activation along with a reduction in phospho-tau and an elevation in synaptophysin in the icv-STZ mouse model. Thus, our experiments demonstrate an anti-neuroinflammatory action of BL6, suggesting possible clinical applications of MetAP2 inhibitors for brain disorders in which neuroinflammation is involved. Many states in the United States have adopted culturally responsive sustaining education (CRSE) as a pedagogical framework to promote inclusive education and positive student outcomes for all students, including those from marginalized groups. Yet there is a paucity of knowledge on teachers’ attitudes towards and experiences of implementing these initiatives. This study draws on survey data to explore how urban and rural/suburban elementary school teachers across the state of New York understand and implement the state’s CRSE framework. Results show that although CRSE is not necessarily a top priority of many schools across the state, teachers generally have positive perceptions of CRSE and have been accountable in taking concrete steps towards implementing inclusive curriculum. However, they can benefit from more school- and district-level support. Lastly, teachers in rural/suburban districts outside of NYC reported significantly lower rates of school-wide buy-in into CRSE. These findings support the development of school- or districtwide professional learning opportunities to build understanding of the state’s framework and ways to collaboratively translate CRSE values into inclusive teaching. New York State (NYS) passed the Marijuana Regulation and Taxation Act (MRTA) in March of 2021 to legalize adult-use recreational cannabis that allows for its distribution, retail sale, and on-site consumption in licensed businesses. While the state (NYS) has imposed some spatial constraints on the dispensaries’ locations, it is unclear what the current spatial patterns of those dispensaries are and how they impact neighborhoods. This research explores how recreational cannabis relates spatially to neighborhood characteristics using New York City as a case study. We identified how cannabis stores are spatially correlated with neighborhood attributes, including socio-demographic and land use characteristics. Our results from the compliance check showed that the highest noncompliance rate existed in block groups where dispensaries were located in relation to schools. The results from the spatial statistics suggest that dispensaries tended to be located near adult businesses that are not considered in existing buffering requirements. Our research allows policymakers to better understand the social and spatial impacts of recreational cannabis distribution to minimize negative effects on residential areas, schools, and other sensitive locations. State and local health departments were responsible for ensuring equitable distribution of the COVID-19 vaccine. This qualitative study aimed to identify the challenges, strategies, disappointments, and successes in achieving equity for hard-to-reach and at-risk populations. Using a purposive sampling strategy, 16 individuals affiliated with health departments across nine states, each holding leadership roles in vaccine distribution, were interviewed between late 2021 and mid-2022. The key factors promoting vaccine equity included (1) inviting community members to serve on vaccine advisory groups to participate in decision-making; (2) utilizing pre-existing community relationships and spaces to facilitate the planning and distribution of the vaccine; and (3) establishing and building upon community outreach to support accessibility and uptake of the vaccine. The barriers included (1) a lack of clarity on vaccine prioritization criteria; (2) language/communication access; and (3) the initial focus on mass vaccination sites for vaccine delivery. The stakeholders also highlighted potential facilitators for increasing equity in future vaccine rollouts. Overall, community engagement emerged as a critical factor in ensuring equity during disaster response efforts. Full article

A dysregulated immune response is associated with an excessive release of cytokines that can lead to systemic vasoplegia and vasoplegic shock with the development of multiorgan failure that is associated with an increased risk of dying. Under physiological circumstances, the endothelium and the glycocalyx are responsible for maintaining vascular tone, capillary permeability, and hemostasis, and controlling inflammation. In hyperinflammation, the endothelium and glycocalyx become damaged due to the excessive production of certain toxic proteins, along with an overwhelming release of cytokines. It has been shown in both in vitro animal experiments and in humans that extracorporeal hemoadsorption can reduce circulating levels of cytokines and may also remove toxic proteins that directly take part in endothelium and glycocalyx damage. The current review aims to summarize current knowledge, put recent findings into context, and introduce the hypothesis of “endothelial protection with hemoadsorption” in critically ill patients. Although multilingualism is a major issue in educational policies, especially in states hosting a high number of newcomer immigrant students, there is limited research exploring the experiences of a multilingual group of newcomer students and how they use language in schools. This article draws on 112 interviews with students from an immigrant background across four high schools in Arizona and New York. We illuminate the role of language in shaping identity and inclusion. Through conceptualizing power and language ideology, we find that language ideologies and practices shape the perception of students’ social interactions in school settings. Our findings also indicate that teachers’ practices and school policies surrounding language(s) have the potential to affect how students view language in relation to their own identity and via social interactions. We contribute to an understanding of how language policies and ideologies shape the experiences and power dynamics of diverse, multilingual, immigrant-origin students. Full article
