Built cultural heritage in East Africa is often interpreted and taught through monument-based, stylistic, or externally derived frameworks that insufficiently account for the region’s overlapping environmental, cultural, historical, and socio-spatial processes. Responding to this theoretical and pedagogical gap, this article develops a regionally grounded theoretical model of East African built heritage as a layered system, with particular attention to Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda. Methodologically, the study adopts a qualitative, interpretive approach, combining a critical literature review, analysis of selected built heritage layers, and expert perspectives from East African and European/international respondents. The findings show that East African built heritage is shaped by five interrelated layers: environmental foundations, indigenous and vernacular systems, Swahili/coastal Indian Ocean urbanism, colonial reconfiguration, and postcolonial/contemporary transformation. These layers do not form a linear historical sequence; rather, they overlap, interact, are disrupted, and are reinterpreted through material practices, spatial transformation, memory, environmental knowledge, and everyday use. The article argues that East African built heritage is defined by a layered system that is hybrid, fragile, unevenly recognized, partly intangible, and negotiated. It concludes that architectural education must move beyond object-based conservation knowledge transfer toward competency building in historical interpretation, environmental understanding, community engagement, adaptive reuse, and critical design intervention. Indigenous youth are increasingly recognized as important agents of sustainability; however, how environmental learning shapes pro-environmental intentions and behaviors remains insufficiently understood. This exploratory mixed-methods study integrates Experiential Learning Theory (ELT), the Elaboration Likelihood Model (ELM), and the Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB) to examine behavioral transformation among indigenous youth participating in community-based environmental learning activities in northern Thailand. Twenty-five indigenous student participants engaged in a structured environmental learning program developed through Citizen Science, Critical Participatory Action Research, and Living Lab approaches. Quantitative data from 250 activity-level questionnaire responses and qualitative data from 200 reflective responses collected from 25 participants through eight reflection prompts were analyzed using PLS-SEM, mediation analysis, permutation-based MGA, and the Gioia methodology. The model explained 50.0% of the variance in pro-environmental behavioral intention. Communication quality significantly enhanced attention (β = 0.452, p < 0.001), and participation strongly predicted practical experience (β = 0.660, p < 0.001). Practical experience contributed to perceived value of information, which enhanced perceived behavioral control (β = 0.691, p < 0.001), a key mechanism influencing behavioral intention. Peripheral information processing showed a stronger effect than central processing, and MGA revealed differentiated learning pathways across activity categories. Qualitative findings indicated a progression from environmental practices to advocacy and environmental identity, supported by indigenous ecological knowledge and intergenerational learning. This study provides an exploratory framework for understanding culturally grounded environmental learning and offers implications for designing sustainability education programs with indigenous communities. Climate change has increased the frequency of hotter droughts and forest decline processes, highlighting the need for monitoring methodologies capable of detecting loss of vigor on the individual-tree scale. Pinus pseudostrobus is an economically important species in the temperate forests of the indigenous community of Nuevo San Juan Parangaricutiro, Michoacán. The aim of this study was to evaluate the elevational and thermal factors associated with the spatial and temporal variability of P. pseudostrobus vigor by integrating multispectral, LiDAR, and land surface temperature (LST) data. Five multispectral flights were conducted using unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) between June 2023 and June 2024, along with one LiDAR flight in April 2024, across an elevational gradient ranging from 2150 to 2920 m. High-resolution orthomosaics, NDVI and LCI indices, a canopy height model, and an object-based classification using Random Forest were generated. LST was obtained from Landsat 8–9 imagery in Google Earth Engine using the Statistical Mono-Window algorithm. Spectral, thermal, and elevation values were extracted at the individual-tree level. The classification achieved an overall accuracy of 69.6% and enabled the identification of 28,585 P. pseudostrobus individuals. NDVI and LCI varied significantly among periods, elevations, and their interaction. The lowest values of vigor were recorded in lower elevation areas, particularly in June 2023, April 2024, and June 2024. In addition, both indices decreased as LST increased, showing strong negative relationships for NDVI (R2 = 0.96) and LCI (R2 = 0.86). Individuals located at the lower elevational limit showed greater vulnerability to thermal stress. Full article

Indigenous grains, such as pearl millet, can contribute to alleviating food insecurity in South Africa and addressing the health and well-being of consumers. Stigmatisation and a lack of consumer knowledge about indigenous grains have been found to stifle the consumption of these grains. Therefore, this study aimed to explore South African consumers’ perceived understanding and experience of pearl millet and the external product attributes that attract their attention and steer them towards purchasing and consuming this indigenous grain. This interpretivist phenomenological exploratory study used a qualitative methodology. Small synchronous online focus groups were used to gather the data. The thematic analyses revealed that consumers are generally perceived as uncertain about and lacking experience in the use and consumption of pearl millet, which results from factors such as product unfamiliarity, a lack of knowledge, the product being overlooked in stores, and various assumptions about the grain. Consumers’ perceived willingness to purchase pearl millet may be influenced by several product attraction indicators, including price, packaging, whether it is produced locally, retailer image, and quality-enhancement attributes, which marketers and product developers in South Africa should use to grow consumer interest. This study contributes towards changing the consumer perceived approach to pearl millet by identifying the factors that hamper and limit the choice of pearl millet consumption. South Africa can ill afford to neglect marketing and improving consumer awareness of pearl millet if the health and well-being of South African consumers are to be improved. Full article

This community-engaged qualitative study co-defined digital health and artificial intelligence (AI) priorities with First Nations communities in Manitoba, Canada, including those with disabilities. Grounded in Indigenous research methodologies and community-based participatory research, the project responded to persistent inequities in rehabilitation and health service access shaped by geography, colonial legacies, and jurisdictional fragmentation. These inequities are especially important in the context of aging, as older adults and Elders may experience compounded barriers related to disability, chronic conditions, mobility limitations, and digital exclusion. Over approximately 12 months, an interdisciplinary team consisting of First Nations scholars and partners, disability organizations, clinicians, and researchers conducted relationship-building visits and meetings with First Nations leadership, Elders/Knowledge Keepers, health providers, and community members to inform the design of a Gathering focused on disability, digital health, and AI. A one-day community-engaged Gathering was held on Treaty 1 and 2 Territory in Winnipeg and convened approximately 70 participants from multiple First Nations communities and disability/health organizations. Five facilitated roundtables explored: (1) health and research priorities for First Nations persons with disabilities; (2) primary care and disabilities; (3) digital access and cultural safety; (4) culturally safe and ethical AI use; and (5) health system challenges, disability, and digital health. Data consisted of facilitator-produced, de-identified table summaries, facilitator reflection forms, and participant-validated plenary notes; no recordings or individual sociodemographic data were collected. Using qualitative description and team-based content analysis, three interrelated domains emerged: (1) relationships, identity, trust, and cultural safety; (2) system, infrastructure, and equity conditions required for accessible care and digital inclusion (e.g., connectivity “dead zones,” device access, transport, and culturally safe services); and (3) opportunities, risks, and governance principles for AI and data use (e.g., AI literacy, privacy, bias, Indigenous data sovereignty, and Nation-specific governance). Findings emphasize that equitable digital health and AI must be relational, disability-informed, culturally safe, and led under First Nations authority, with AI positioned to support, rather than replace, human care relationships. The findings also highlight the importance of designing digital health and AI initiatives that remain accessible and trustworthy for older adults and Elders, particularly where aging, disability, and rural or remote living intersect. This study analyzes how the integration of native maize cultivation, cultural identity, and technological innovation can promote sustainable and experiential tourism in rural Mexico. The research was conducted in the community of Llano de Guadalupe, Tlaxiaco, Oaxaca. The participatory Action Research process progressed through institutional coordination, participatory diagnosis, biofertilization training, monitoring activities, and community dissemination phases conducted between 3 March 2025 to 25 May 2026. The methodological process included institutional coordination, participatory diagnosis, semi-structured interviews, focus groups, field observations, and the implementation of agroecological practices based on biofertilization. An AI-assisted illustrated field notebook was co-designed to support intercultural education, knowledge exchange, and community participation. The study also incorporated collaborative storytelling, seed preservation practices, and the co-design of sustainable tourism routes grounded in local gastronomy, biodiversity, and agricultural traditions. Preliminary impact indicators showed the expansion of participation from two pilot producers to 54 local producers after community dissemination activities. Findings indicate that the integration of traditional ecological knowledge with generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) can strengthen community empowerment, intergenerational learning, and sustainable livelihoods while preserving biocultural heritage. The proposed circular framework connects ecological, social, cultural, and economic subsystems by transforming agroecological practices into educational and tourism assets. The results suggest that Indigenous and rural communities can lead sustainable destination development when supported through participatory governance, inclusive education, and context-sensitive technological innovation. The Tlaxiaco case offers a transferable framework for sustainable rural development that contributes to food sovereignty, biodiversity conservation, environmental stewardship, and local economic resilience. Background/Objectives: Evacuation policies for childbirth in Nunavut, Canada, continue to profoundly shape the lives of Inuit women, their families, and communities. The evacuation policy is known to disrupt kinship networks and contribute to the erosion of Inuit birthing knowledge. Addressing a gap in Inuit-led understandings of sexual and reproductive health priorities, this paper presents findings from research conducted in 2024 with Kivallirmiut women (‘People of’ in Inuktitut is miut; Kivallirmiut means people of the Kivalliq Region. Nunavummiut means people of Nunavut, and Arviarmiut means people of Arviat, Nunavut, Canada). The study took place in two communities in the Kivalliq Region of Nunavut. Methods: Employing a highly participatory, community-based Indigenous methodology, this study was underpinned by Inuit Qaujimajatuqangit, Indigenous feminist and postcolonial and decolonial theories, and principles of health equity. Data from a survey were generated to identify needs and priorities related to perinatal health and care. Results: Findings identify that Inuit women in these communities hold an interest in accessing perinatal information and support, with a strong desire for learning from Inuit Elders, as well as support via peer networks. Participants also emphasized a desire for more information concerning travelling for birth (medical evacuation), breastfeeding, and healing after birth. Different models for delivery of this information and perinatal support were also identified. Conclusions: Collectively, the priorities of Inuit women in this survey offer insights concerning a structural misalignment between existing perinatal care supports and services that rely on evacuation-based perinatal care and the needs and priorities within Kivalliq communities. This disconnection reveals enduring colonial assumptions embedded within current healthcare systems. The findings suggest a need for perinatal supports that centre culture, kinship, and relational forms of support. Full article

Current models of dementia care often perpetuate the legacies of colonization, which highlights the need for a culturally congruent approach. This research describes the necessary components to co-develop a freely available Indigenous-centered dementia model of care in partnership with Indigenous individuals living with dementia, their families, and communities. To prioritize ethical and decolonial research approaches, sequential focus groups were used alongside Keeoukaywin (The Visiting Way)—an Indigenous methodology deeply rooted in Métis and Cree ways of knowing—guided by a group of advisors and Elders. The data were co-analyzed using reflexive thematic analysis guided by Indigenous principles. Three themes were generated: Indigenization, Personalization, and the Intersection of Challenges and Innovations, to illustrate how dementia care can be operationalized and adapted to various cultural and care contexts. This research offers a foundation for developing dementia care that truly aligns with Indigenous ways of doing. Full article

Indigenous knowledge and associated indigenous resource management practices are at the root of sustainable land and marine management. Typically, they point to the necessity of maintaining biodiversity and of ensuring the sustenance of social and economic systems, which benefit the well-being of indigenous communities. Conscious of these core attributes, the Government of Indonesia has enabled formal access for indigenous communities to forests for their livelihoods. Nonetheless, meeting the sustainable development goals through such forest management and conservation in Indonesia is threatened by various competing interests and power imbalances. These lead to the disproportionate conversion of naturally vegetated areas, as well as the inability of communities to benefit from economic opportunities. Moreover, the Government of Indonesia has insufficiently regulated the utilisation of indigenous knowledge to conserve the forest areas. This creates a policy design and implementation gap which is not properly understood or addressed. In this conceptual article, we posit that applying cultural space methodology fills the gaps. This methodology combines cultural space and land administration concepts and connects people to land and marine space. This article discusses how and why using the methodology proves to be effective for agricultural and maritime communities in Indonesia and helps to reform the administration capacities of the territories. It identifies and assesses people and land/marine space relationships by the existence of (1) knowledge, practices, and/or objects that represent the relationship, (2) the social, economic, and environmental function of space for the community, and (3) administration of the forest and conservation areas. The methodology also provides a procedure to convert information on the interrelation of the indigenous community, its cultural space in the forest and conservation areas, and indigenous knowledge into geospatial information and data that represent the cultural space unit as a geographic feature. Debates concerning the Nature of Science (NoS) have increasingly acknowledged its epistemic, cultural, ethical, and social dimensions. Recent scholarship has further foregrounded issues of equity, identity, and justice within science education. While these developments represent significant progress, this article argues that dominant conceptualisations of NoS remain fundamentally anthropocentric and insufficiently responsive to the ecological crises that define the Anthropocene. Drawing on Earth System Science, eco-centric theory, post-human theory and Indigenous and local knowledges, this paper proposes a planetary-conscious reconceptualisation of NoS. This framework retains the methodological rigour and evidential standards of Western science while expanding epistemic boundaries to include relational, place-based, and intergenerational ways of knowing. We argue that eco-centric and post-human theoretical frameworks offer essential pedagogical approaches for supporting young people to develop deeper connections with nature, fostering care-based relationships with the more-than-human world, and building resilience for sustainable futures. Such a reconceptualisation is necessary not only for scientific literacy but for the protection and enhancement of planetary health. Implications for curriculum, pedagogy, and teacher education are discussed, with particular attention to primary science education. Full article

In an era of accelerating geopolitical realignments and intensifying climate volatility, the interconnected domains of land, food, and climate have emerged as critical axes of global inequality, demanding renewed attention within sustainability education. This study addresses the central problem that existing geography, environmental, and sustainability curricula rarely engage with the geopolitical forces shaping Water, Energy, Land and Food (WELF), thereby obscuring progress toward achieving SDG 2 (Zero Hunger), SDG 13 (Climate Action) and SDG 15 (Life on Land). Situated within the Water, Energy, Land, and Food (WELF) nexus. Employing a Systematic Literature Review methodology, guided by PRISMA protocols and grounded in Political Ecology Theory, findings reveal that agricultural protectionism and land-grabbing dynamics originating from the Global North exacerbate climate-induced food insecurity and land dispossession in the Global South. Critically, the synthesis demonstrates that these dimensions of climate–food geopolitics remain inadequately addressed in existing curricula, leaving learners ill-equipped to critically analyze the structural forces underlying land-based vulnerabilities. The study recommends embedding land–food–climate geopolitics into sustainability curricula through decolonial, systems-thinking pedagogies; integrating scenario-based simulations of land-centric climate negotiations; and developing transdisciplinary modules that combine geospatial land-use analysis, political economy of agrifood systems, and indigenous land knowledge. Modern agriculture in developing regions faces significant challenges due to labor scarcity and the health hazards associated with the manual application of chemical treatments. This study presents the design, development, and techno-economic evaluation of an experimental hexacopter unmanned ariel vehicle (UAV) platform specifically tailored for crop protection on fragmented, smallholder farmlands. The research aims to bridge the gap between expensive imported technology and the practical needs of small-scale farmers by providing a cost-effective, locally manufacturable solution. The methodology involved the integration of a modular spraying system and optimized control architecture into a high-stability hexacopter frame. Experimental evaluations focused on flight stability, payload capacity, and spray uniformity using water-sensitive media. The results indicate that the developed platform achieves high coverage efficiency while significantly reducing chemical waste compared to traditional manual methods. Furthermore, the economic analysis suggests that the operational costs are substantially lower than those of comparable imported systems, offering a favorable payback period within a few crop seasons. These findings demonstrate that an indigenous UAV spraying platform can enhance both operational safety and economic feasibility for smallholder agriculture. Full article

Introduction: Records of rare, deep-water, and non-indigenous fish species are of growing interest in marine biodiversity research because they refine regional inventories, improve taxonomic knowledge, and provide valuable evidence of ecological change. In regions supported by long-term monitoring programs, such findings are especially relevant, as they help detect unusual occurrences and document changes in species composition over time. Objective: The aim of this communication is to present recent records of fish species new to science and new to Spanish waters, together with a non-indigenous species, all from Galician and Cantabrian waters (northern Spain), while emphasizing the importance of scientific surveys and complementary local observations in their detection. Methodology: The material examined was collected during the annual demersal trawl surveys conducted by the Instituto Español de Oceanografía (IEO-CSIC) on the northern Spanish continental shelf (DEMERSALES), as well as during two multidisciplinary surveys carried out on the Galicia Bank in 2010 and 2011. An additional specimen was obtained from a local recreational fisher off Asturias. In all cases, species identification was based on an integrative taxonomic approach combining morphological examination and molecular analyses (COI barcoding). Results: Three species new to science were identified: Gaidropsarus gallaeciae (Gadiformes: Gaidropsaridae), Notacanthus arrontei (Notacanthiformes: Notacanthidae), and Neoscopelus serranoi (Myctophiformes: Neoscopelidae). In addition, Lyconus brachicolus (Gadiformes: Lyconidae) and Lipogenys hyalovelanum (Notacanthiformes: Notacanthidae) were recorded for the first time in Spanish waters. A specimen of Diapterus brevirostris (Perciformes: Gerreidae), native to the tropical and subtropical Pacific coast of America, was also identified off Asturias. Owing to its small size and to the proximity of the commercial port of Gijón, ballast water is considered the most plausible vector for its introduction into the Cantabrian Sea. Conclusions: These records illustrate the value of long-term oceanographic surveys for detecting rare and deep-water fishes and confirm the usefulness of integrative taxonomy for robust species identification. They also highlight the complementary role of fishers and citizen observers in documenting biodiversity change and detecting non-indigenous species in Spanish waters. Full article

Influence of the GSTP1 rs1695 Polymorphism on Mercury Levels and Memory Performance in the Suruí Indigenous from the Brazilian Amazon

Mercury (Hg) is a major neurotoxicant and public health concern and gold mining is a significant source of Hg contamination in the Amazon. There, Indigenous peoples are vulnerable to this exposure. Individual susceptibility influences both internal mercury levels and related clinical outcomes. In this context, the GSTP1 gene stands out due to its role in detoxification of xenobiotics. The objectives were to assess the associations between: (1) Hg levels and neurotoxicity signs; (2) the GSTP1 rs1695 polymorphism and Hg levels; and (3) whether the GSTP1 rs1695 polymorphism modifies the effect of mercury on neurotoxicity signs. A cross-sectional study was conducted between April and May 2023, with 113 Paiter-Suruí Indigenous people. Sociodemographic and clinical data were collected using a validated methodology. Hair and oral mucosa cells were collected to assess Hg levels and the GSTP1 rs1695 polymorphism. Hg levels ranged from 0.1 μg/g to 6.5 μg/g (median = 1 μg/g, IQR = 1.43). Individuals with impaired memory and muscle strength had significantly higher mercury levels (β = 4.39 and β = 1.24). Carriers of the GSTP1AA genotype showed a 0.46-point reduction for each 1 μg/g increase in mean Hg levels, compared to individuals with the GSTP1GG genotype (β = −0.46). These results may support public policies by identifying priority groups for intervention based on genetic profiles. Full article

The spatial distribution and productivity of subsistence resources are central to food security, nutrition, and cultural vitality in circumpolar Indigenous communities. Yet few studies incorporate Indigenous Knowledge in methodology to monitor subsistence plant species. Here, we apply participatory action research to develop a monitoring system for the culturally and nutritionally important Rubus chamaemorus (atsalugpiaq, salmonberry) near the Yup’ik village of Quinhagak in southwest Alaska. With support from community members, two ground-truth surveys assessed berry productivity at nine sites within Quinhagak’s Traditional Land Use Area. Seventeen interviews identified key themes related to subsistence harvest and highlighted winter meteorological factors important for analysis. We compiled a multi-year dataset including PlanetScope eight-band SuperDove imagery (3 m GSD); airborne LiDAR and satellite-derived DEMs; and four meteorological parameters. Linear regression and multiple adaptive regression splines were tested to evaluate relationships among vegetation health, climate, landscape features, and berry productivity. Model outputs identified chlorophyll-related vegetation indices, particularly MTCI, as strong predictors of harvest outcomes, with higher flowering-season MTCI values associated with greater berry abundance. This work establishes a foundational, scalable approach for the long-term monitoring of Arctic subsistence plants in conjunction with Arctic communities and demonstrates the value of multi-layer data integration in regions historically challenging for remote sensing and ground surveys improving outcomes for regional harvest predictions and increased understanding of possible mechanisms controlling berry productivity in Arctic regions.
