A just and sustainable energy transition in historically coal-dependent regions like Kentucky requires more than the adoption of new technologies and market-based solutions. This study uses a stated preferences approach to evaluate public support for various attributes of energy transition programs, revealing broad backing for moving away from coal, as indicated by a negative willingness to pay (WTP) for the status quo (–USD 4.63). Key findings show strong bipartisan support for solar energy, with Democrats showing the highest WTP at USD 8.29, followed closely by Independents/Others at USD 8.22, and Republicans at USD 8.08. Wind energy also garnered support, particularly among Republicans (USD 4.04), who may view it as more industry-compatible and less ideologically polarizing. Job creation was a dominant priority across political affiliations, especially for Independents (USD 9.07), indicating a preference for tangible, near-term economic benefits. Similarly, preserving cultural values tied to coal received support among Independents/Others (USD 4.98), emphasizing the importance of place-based identity in shaping preferences. In contrast, social support programs (e.g., job retraining) and certain post-mining land uses (e.g., recreation and conservation) were less favored, possibly due to their abstract nature, delayed benefits, and political framing. Findings from Kentucky offer insights for other coal-reliant states like Wyoming, West Virginia, Pennsylvania, Indiana, and Illinois. Ultimately, equitable transitions must integrate local voices, address cultural and economic realities, and ensure community-driven planning and investment. Full article

The biopharmaceutical industry is undergoing a fundamental transformation from traditional batch manufacturing to continuous manufacturing (CM) for recombinant drugs and biosimilars, driven by regulatory support through the International Council for Harmonization (ICH) Q13 guidance and compelling economic advantages. This comprehensive review examines the technical, economic, and regulatory aspects of implementing continuous manufacturing specifically for recombinant protein production and biosimilar development, synthesizing validated data from peer-reviewed research, regulatory sources, and global implementation case studies. The analysis demonstrates that continuous manufacturing offers substantial benefits, including a reduced equipment footprint of up to 70%, a 3- to 5-fold increase in volumetric productivity, enhanced product quality consistency, and facility cost reductions of 30–50% compared to traditional batch processes. Leading biomanufacturers across North America, Europe, and the Asia–Pacific region are successfully integrating perfusion upstream processes with connected downstream bioprocesses, enabling the fully end-to-end continuous manufacture of biopharmaceuticals with demonstrated commercial viability. The regulatory framework has been comprehensively established through ICH Q13 guidance and region-specific implementations across the FDA, EMA, PMDA, and emerging market authorities. This review provides a critical analysis of advanced technologies, including single-use perfusion bioreactors, continuous chromatography systems, real-time process analytical technology, and Industry 4.0 integration strategies. The economic modeling presents favorable return-on-investment profiles, accompanied by a detailed analysis of global market dynamics, regional implementation patterns, and supply chain integration opportunities. Large language models (LLMs) often tend to hallucinate, especially in domain-specific tasks and tasks that require reasoning. Previously, we introduced SubGraph Retrieval Augmented Generation (SG-RAG) as a novel Graph RAG method for multi-hop question answering. SG-RAG leverages Cypher queries to search a given knowledge graph and retrieve the subgraph necessary to answer the question. The results from our previous work showed the higher performance of our method compared to the traditional Retrieval Augmented Generation (RAG). In this work, we further enhanced SG-RAG by proposing an additional step called Merging and Ordering Triplets (MOT). The new MOT step seeks to decrease the redundancy in the retrieved triplets by applying hierarchical merging to the retrieved subgraphs. Moreover, it provides an ordering among the triplets using the Breadth-First Search (BFS) traversal algorithm. We conducted experiments on the MetaQA benchmark, which was proposed for multi-hop question-answering in the movies domain. Our experiments showed that SG-RAG MOT provided more accurate answers than Chain-of-Thought and Graph Chain-of-Thought. We also found that merging (up to a certain point) highly overlapping subgraphs and defining an order among the triplets helped the LLM to generate more precise answers. Full article

Power Ultrasound and Organic Acid-Based Hurdle Technology to Reduce Listeria monocytogenes and Salmonella enterica on Fresh Produce

The increasing demand for fresh fruits and vegetables has been accompanied by a rise in foodborne illness outbreaks linked to fresh produce. Traditional antimicrobial washing treatments, such as chlorine and peroxyacetic acid, have limitations in efficacy and pose environmental and worker health concerns. This study evaluated the effectiveness of organic acids (citric, malic, and lactic acid) and power ultrasound, individually and in combination, for the reduction in Salmonella enterica and Listeria monocytogenes on four fresh produce types: romaine lettuce, cucumber, tomato, and strawberry. Produce samples were inoculated with bacterial cocktails at 8–9 log CFU/unit and treated with organic acids at 2 or 5% for 2 or 5 min, with or without power ultrasound (40 kHz). Results showed that pathogen reductions varied based on the produce matrix with smoother surfaces such as tomato, exhibiting greater reductions than rougher surfaces (e.g., romaine lettuce and strawberry). Lactic and malic acids were the most effective treatments, with 5% lactic acid achieving a reduction of >5 log CFU/unit for S. enterica and 4.53 ± 0.71 log CFU/unit for L. monocytogenes on tomatoes. The combination of organic acids and power ultrasound demonstrated synergistic effects, further enhancing pathogen reduction by <1.87 log CFU/unit. For example, S. enterica on cucumbers was reduced by an additional 1.87 log CFU/unit when treated with 2% malic acid and power ultrasound for 2 min compared to malic acid alone. Similarly, L. monocytogenes on strawberries was further reduced by 1.84 log CFU/unit when treated with 5% malic acid and power ultrasound for 2 min. These findings suggest that organic acids, particularly malic and lactic acids, combined with power ultrasound, may serve as an effective hurdle technology for enhancing the microbial safety of fresh produce. Future research can include validating these treatments in an industrial processing environment. Full article

This paper creates a global similarity network between city-level dialects of English in order to determine whether external factors like the amount of population contact or language contact influence dialect similarity. While previous computational work has focused on external influences that contribute to phonological or lexical similarity, this paper focuses on grammatical variation as operationalized in computational construction grammar. Social media data was used to create comparable English corpora from 256 cities across 13 countries. Each sample is represented using the type frequency of various constructions. These frequency representations are then used to calculate pairwise similarities between city-level dialects; a prediction-based evaluation shows that these similarity values are highly accurate. Linguistic similarity is then compared with four external factors: (i) the amount of air travel between cities, a proxy for population contact, (ii) the difference in the linguistic landscapes of each city, a proxy for language contact, (iii) the geographic distance between cities, and (iv) the presence of political boundaries separating cities. The results show that, while all these factors are significant, the best model relies on language contact and geographic distance. Full article

Background/Objectives: Saliva as a diagnostic medium for COVID-19 requires fewer resources to collect and is more readily adopted across a range of testers. Our study compared an Emergency Use Authorized direct saliva-to-RT-qPCR test against an FDA-authorized nasal swab RT-qPCR assay for participants who reported symptoms of respiratory infection. Methods: We analyzed 737 symptomatic participants who self-selected to test at either a community testing facility or a walk-in clinic due to respiratory symptoms and provided matched saliva and nasal swab samples. Samples were collected between March and September of 2023, both before and after the declared end of the public health emergency. Results: A total of 120 participants tested positive in at least one of the tests. For participants testing in the first 5 days of reported symptoms, the saliva test had a 94.0 positive percent agreement (PPA; 95% C.I. 88.9–99.1%) with the nasal test and a 99.0 negative percent agreement (NPA; 95% C.I. 98.1–99.9%). The viral load decreased beyond day 1 of reported symptoms for saliva testing. Viral load increased up to day 4 for nasal swabs and then decreased. The same number of discordant positive samples (five each) occurred for both tests within 5 days of symptoms onset. Conclusions: In the endemic phase of COVID-19 and for development of new tests, testing methods that are less invasive are more likely to be adopted. The results of saliva-based versus nasal swab PCR measurements relative to days of symptom onset are needed to optimize future testing strategies. Full article

This study explores the self-healing properties of polyurethane nanocomposites enhanced by multiple hydrogen bonds from ureido-pyrimidinone and the incorporation of 1–3 wt.% graphene nanoparticles, based on polyol α,ω-dihydroxy[oligo(butylene-ethylene adipate)]diol, which, according to our knowledge, has not been previously used in such systems. These new materials were synthesized via a two-step process and characterized by their thermal, mechanical, chemical, and self-healing properties. The mechanical analysis revealed that all nanocomposites exhibited high self-healing efficiencies (88–91%). The PU containing 2% graphene stands out as it exhibits the highest initial mechanical strength of ~5 MPa compared to approximately 2MP for a pristine PU while maintaining excellent self-healing efficiency (88%). A cut on the PU nanocomposite with 2% graphene can be completely healed after being heated at 80 °C for 1 h, which shows that it has a fast recovery time. Moreover, 3D printing was also successfully used to assess their processability and its effect on self-healing behavior. Three-dimensional printing did not negatively affect the material regeneration properties; thus, the material can be used in a variety of applications as expected in terms of dimensions and geometry. Minimally Invasive Total Versus Partial Thymectomy for Early-Stage Thymoma

Background/Objectives: Total thymectomy is currently the gold standard operation for treating thymoma. However, recent studies have suggested the potential health consequences of thymus removal in adults, including possible increased autoimmune disease and all-cause mortality. In this context, we assess oncologic outcomes following total vs. partial thymectomy for early-stage thymoma. Methods: We identified patients diagnosed with WHO types A–B3 thymoma between 2010–2021 from a national hospital-based dataset. We excluded patients with stage II or higher disease, open resections and perioperative chemo-/radiation therapy. We stratified patients into total and partial thymectomy cohorts. We used propensity score matching to minimize confounding, Kaplan–Meier analysis to estimate survival, and Cox proportional hazards to identify associations. Results: Of 1598 patients with early-stage thymoma, 495 (31.0%) underwent partial and 1103 (69.0%) total thymectomy. Patients undergoing partial thymectomy were similar in sex (female 53.7% vs. 53.4%; p = 0.914), race (white 74.5% vs. 74.0%; p = 0.921), comorbidities (0 in 77.0% vs. 75.5%; p = 0.742), and tumor size (48.7 mm vs. 50.4 mm; p = 0.455) compared to total thymectomy. There were no differences in 30-day (0.8% vs. 0.6%, p = 0.747) or 90-day mortality (0.8% vs. 0.8%, p > 0.999), which persisted after matching. Moreover, 10-year survival was similar in both unmatched (p = 0.471) and matched cohorts (p = 0.828). Partial thymectomy was not independently associated with survival (aHR = 1.00, p = 0.976). Conclusions: In patients with early-stage thymoma, partial and total thymectomy were associated with similar short- and long-term outcomes. In light of recent attention to the role of the thymus gland, the results add important insights to shared decision-making discussions. Full article

Background/Objective: This study examines the composite influence of frailty, malnutrition, and anemia on postoperative outcomes for patients with adult spinal deformity (ASD). Methods: In this retrospective cohort study using the 2011–2022 NSQIP database, we utilized CPT and ICD codes to identify ASD patients who underwent PSF. Subjects were stratified based on frailty status. Frail patients were then classified according to malnutrition and anemia status. Frailty was determined using the revised risk analysis index (RAI-rev). Our primary outcomes were extended length of stay (LOS), non-routine discharge (NRD), 30-day adverse events (AE), and 30-day mortality. For each outcome, we fitted four nested multivariable logistic regression models (RAI-rev + anemia + malnutrition, RAI-rev + anemia, RAI-rev + malnutrition, and RAI-rev alone) and compared the incremental discrimination of each model using receiver operating characteristic (ROC) analysis. Results: Of 3639 patients, 460 were frail alone, 266 were frail + anemic, 37 were frail + malnourished, 121 were frail + anemic + malnourished, and 2755 were not frail. RAI-rev (aOR: 1.84, 95% CI: 1.45–2.35), anemia (aOR: 1.84, 95% CI: 1.45–2.35), and malnourishment (aOR: 2.34, 95% CI: 1.69–3.24) were independent predictors of extended LOS. RAI-rev (aOR: 1.07, 95% CI: 1.04–1.11) and anemia (aOR: 2.09, 95% CI: 1.66–2.61) were associated with an increased risk of 30-day AEs. RAI-rev and malnutrition were independent predictors of NRD (RAI-rev: aOR: 1.11, 95% CI: 1.06–1.16; Malnutrition: aOR: 1.57, 95% CI: 1.08–2.29) and 30-day mortality (RAI-rev: aOR: 1.10, 95% CI: 1.04–1.17; Malnutrition: aOR: 3.79, 95% CI: 1.24–11.60). Based on ROC analysis, RAI-rev + anemic + malnourished was a superior predictor of LOS and 30-day AEs (both p < 0.001). Compared to RAI-rev, RAI-rev + anemic superiorly predicted LOS and 30-day AEs, and RAI-rev + malnutrition superiorly predicted LOS (all p < 0.001). Conclusions: Our results reveal RAI-rev combined with malnutrition and anemia superiorly predicts 30-day AEs and LOS in postoperative ASD patients. Future studies should investigate the feasibility and efficacy of these models for perioperative risk stratification and optimized recovery planning to improve outcomes for ASD patients. Full article

Statistical data depth measures have been applied to density-based clustering techniques in an effort to achieve robustness in parameter selection via the affine invariant property of the depth measure. Specifically, the Mahalanobis depth measure is used in the application of DBSCAN. In this paper, we examine properties of the Mahalanobis depth measure that lead to instances where it fails to detect clusters in DBSCAN, whereas Euclidean distance is able to differentiate the clusters. We propose two solutions to the problems induced by these properties. The first re-examines clusters to determine if data shape is causing multiple clusters to be grouped into a single cluster. The second examines the use of a different measure as an alternate depth function. Experiments are provided. Full article

Background: Gold mining is a critical part of the industry of Central Asia, contributing significantly to regional economic growth. However, gold production management faces numerous challenges, including adopting innovative technologies such as AI, using improved logistical equipment, resolving supply chain inefficiencies and disruptions, and incorporating modernized waste management and advancements in gold bar processing technologies. This study explores how advanced technologies and improved logistical processes can enhance efficiency and sustainability. Method: This paper examines gold production processes in Kyrgyzstan, a gold-producing country in Central Asia. The case study approach combines qualitative interviews with industry stakeholders and a system dynamics (SD) simulation model to compare current operations with a technology-based scenario. Results: The simulation model shows improved outcomes when innovative technologies are applied to ore processing, waste refinement, and gold bar production. The results also indicate an approximate twenty-five percent reduction in transport time, a thirty percent decrease in equipment downtime, a thirty percent reduction in emissions, and a fifteen percent increase in gold extraction when using artificial intelligence, smart logistics, and regional smelting. Conclusions: The study concludes with recommendations to modernize equipment, localize processing, and invest in digital logistics to support sustainable mining and improve operational performance in Kyrgyzstan’s gold sector. Antibiotics may be used for gastrointestinal enteropathies but research has demonstrated significant microbiota dysmetabolism, fermentation pattern alterations, and prolonged dysbiosis following treatment. The objective of this study was to determine how dietary fiber or fecal microbial transplant (FMT) treatments impacted the fecal characteristics, metabolite concentrations, and microbiota populations of cats treated with metronidazole. Twenty-five healthy adult cats (6.75 ± 1.20 yr) were fed a commercial kibble diet for 2 wk, administered metronidazole (20 mg/kg BW BID) for 2 wk, then monitored for 4 wk. Cats were allotted to one of three interventions (diet, diet + beet pulp, diet + FMT) for 1 wk, interventions ceased, then recovery was monitored for 4 wk. Fresh fecal samples were collected at the end of each phase and at the mid-points of recovery. As anticipated, metronidazole increased fecal scores and moisture (p < 0.05), reduced fecal bacterial alpha diversity (p < 0.0001), and reduced fecal metabolite concentrations. Few treatment effects were detected, with antibiotic recovery contributing to many of the results observed. Dysbiosis was persistent throughout the study, with 4/25 cats still demonstrating mild dysbiosis after 9 wk. Overall, dietary or FMT treatments may aid in accelerated antibiotic recovery in cats but further research is needed to refine treatments for greater efficacy. Full article

Improving curriculum structure is critical for enhancing student success and on-time graduation, yet few methods exist to evaluate how prerequisite paths shape student progression and graduation outcomes. This study proposes a data-driven, graph-based framework that integrates course prerequisite networks with student performance data to systematically analyze curricular structure and student outcomes. We identify high-risk courses by jointly modeling their structural importance and pass rates, and quantify the time and survivability of different prerequisite paths using probabilistic models. Additionally, we introduced grade transition patterns to capture more nuanced transitions in student performance and pinpoint bottlenecks along prerequisite paths. Applying the model on four science and engineering majors from a public institution, the results not only identify high-risk courses often missed in conventional analyses, but also reveal path-level disparities and structural bottlenecks that affect student progression and time to graduation. For example, in the Computer Science major, we identified that the architecture and operating systems pathway is more challenging than the software engineering pathway. A closer examination of the course pairs along this trajectory revealed that the difficulty stems from a significant drop in student performance between a prerequisite–successor course pairs.This type of analysis fills a gap in conventional curriculum studies, which often overlook path-level dynamics, and offers actionable insights for educators a to identify high risk curricular components. Don’t Pause Me When I Switch: Parsing Effects of Code-Switching

This study investigates the effect of code-switching (CS) on the processing and attachment resolution of ambiguous relative clauses (RCs) like ‘Bill saw the friend of the neighbor that was talking about football’ by heritage speakers of Spanish. It checks whether code-switching imposes a prosodic break at the place of language change, and whether this prosodic break affects RC parsing, as predicted by the Implicit Prosody Hypothesis: a high attachment (HA) preference results from a prosodic break at the RC. A prosodic break at the preposition ‘of’ in the complex DP ‘the friend of the neighbor’ entails a low attachment (LA) preference. The design compares RC resolution in unilingual sentences (Spanish, with a default preference for HA in RC, and English, with the default LA) with the RC parsing in sentences with CS. The CS occurs at the places of prosodic breaks considered by the IPH. The results show sensitivity to the place of CS in RC attachment. CS prompting LA causes longer response times. The preference for HA in Spanish unilingual sentences is higher than in English ones. Heritage speakers are sensitive to the prosodic effects of CS. However, there is high variability across speakers. Full article

The Impact of COVID-19 on People Living with HIV: A Network Science Perspective

People living with HIV (PLWH) faced diverse challenges during the COVID-19 pandemic, including disruptions to care, housing instability, emotional distress, and economic hardship. This study used graph-based clustering methods to analyze pandemic-era experiences of PLWH in a national sample from the NIH’s All of Us dataset (n = 242). Across three graph configurations we identified consistent subgroups shaped by social connectedness, housing stability, emotional well-being, and engagement with preventive behaviors. Comparison with an earlier local study of PLWH in Illinois confirmed recurring patterns of vulnerability and resilience while also revealing additional national-level subgroups not observed in the smaller sample. Subgroups with strong social or institutional ties were associated with greater emotional stability and proactive engagement with COVID-19 preventive behaviors, while those facing isolation and structural hardship exhibited elevated distress and limited engagement with COVID-19 preventive measures. These findings underscore the importance of precision public health strategies that reflect the heterogeneity of PLWH and suggest that strengthening social support networks, promoting housing stability, and leveraging institutional connections may enhance pandemic preparedness and HIV care in future public health crises.
