As a cultural corridor connecting the Central Plains and Northeast China, the Liaoxi Corridor has a special position in the transmission of traditional Chinese culture. Traditional villages in the region have preserved rich intangible cultural heritage and traditional architectural features, which highlight the historical heritage of multicultural intermingling. This study fills the gap in the spatial distribution of traditional villages in the Liaoxi Corridor and reveals their spatial distribution pattern, which is of great theoretical significance. Using Geographic Information System (GIS) spatial analysis and quantitative geography, this study analyzes the spatial pattern of traditional villages and the influencing factors. The results show that traditional villages in the Liaoxi Corridor are clustered, forming high-density settlement areas in Chaoyang County and Beizhen City. Most villages are located in hilly and mountainous areas and river valleys and are affected by the natural geographic environment (topography and water sources) and historical and human factors (immigration and settlement, border defense, ethnic integration, etc.). In conclusion, this study provides a scientific basis and practical reference for rural revitalization, cultural heritage protection, and regional coordinated development, aiming at revealing the geographical and cultural mechanisms behind the spatial distribution of traditional villages. This paper presents a conceptual and methodological framework for using Geographical Information Systems (GIS) to “deep map” cultural heritage sites along Ireland’s Wild Atlantic Way, with a focus on the 1588 Spanish Armada wrecks in County Kerry and archaeological landscapes in County Sligo’s “Yeats Country.” Drawing on interdisciplinary dialogues from the humanities, social sciences, and geospatial sciences, it illustrates how digital spatial technologies can excavate, preserve, and sustain intangible cultural knowledge embedded within such palimpsestic landscapes. Using MAXQDA 24 software to mine and code historical, literary, folkloric, and environmental texts, the study constructed bespoke GIS attribute tables and visualizations integrated with elevation models and open-source archaeological data. The result is a richly layered cartographic method that reveals the spectral and affective dimensions of heritage landscapes through climate, memory, literature, and spatial storytelling. By engaging with “deep mapping” and theories such as “Spectral Geography,” the research offers new avenues for sustainable heritage conservation, cultural tourism, and public education that are sensitive to both ecological and cultural resilience in the West of Ireland. This study explores digital inequality as a socio-spatial phenomenon within the context of smart inclusion, focusing on the Regional Unit of Xanthi, Greece—a region marked by ethno-cultural diversity and pronounced urban–rural contrasts. Using a mixed-methods design, this research integrates secondary quantitative data with qualitative insights from semi-structured interviews, aiming to uncover how spatial, demographic, and cultural variables shape digital engagement. Geographic Information System (GIS) tools are employed to map disparities in internet access and ICT infrastructure, revealing significant gaps linked to geography, education, and economic status. The findings demonstrate that digital inequality is particularly acute in rural, minority, and economically marginalized communities, where limited infrastructure intersects with low digital literacy and socio-economic disadvantage. Interview data further illuminate how residents navigate exclusion, emphasizing generational divides, perceptions of technology, and place-based constraints. By bridging spatial analysis with lived experience, this study advances the conceptualization of digitally inclusive smart regions. It offers policy-relevant insights into how territorial inequality undermines the goals of smart development and proposes context-sensitive interventions to promote equitable digital participation. The case of Xanthi underscores the importance of integrating spatial justice into smart city and regional planning agendas. Full article

Property crime is a pressing issue in maintaining social order and urban sustainability, particularly in regions marked by pronounced socioeconomic disparity. While the link between socioeconomic stress and crime is well established, regional variations in Thailand have not been fully examined. Therefore, the purpose of this research was to examine spatial patterns of property crime and identify the potential associations between property crime and socioeconomic environment across Thailand. Using nationally compiled property-crime data from official sources across all provinces of Thailand, we employed geographic information system (GIS) tools to conduct a spatial cluster analysis at the sub-national level across 76 provinces. Both global and local statistical techniques were applied to identify spatial associations between property-crime rates and neighborhood-level socioeconomic conditions. The results revealed that property-crime clusters are primarily concentrated in the south, while low-crime areas dominate parts of the north and northeast regions. To analyze the spatial dynamics of property crime, we used geospatial statistical models to investigate the influence of socioeconomic variables across provinces. We found that property-crime rates were significantly associated with monthly income, areas experiencing high levels of household debt, migrant populations, working-age populations, an uneducated labor force, and population density. Identifying associated factors and mapping geographic regions with significant spatial clusters is an effective approach for determining where issues concentrate and for deepening understanding of the underlying patterns and drivers of property crime. This study offers actionable insights for enhancing safety, resilience, and urban sustainability in Thailand’s diverse regional contexts by highlighting geographies of vulnerability. Full article

Analysis of Spatiotemporal Dynamics and Driving Mechanisms of Cultural Heritage Distribution Along the Jiangnan Canal, China

As a crucial component of the Beijing–Hangzhou Grand Canal’s hydraulic engineering, the Jiangnan Canal has historically played a pivotal role in China’s development as a key hydraulic infrastructure. This water conservancy project, connecting northern and southern water systems, not only facilitated regional economic integration but also nurtured unique cultural landscapes along its course. The Jiangnan Canal and its adjacent cities were selected as the study area to systematically investigate 334 tangible cultural heritage (TCH) sites and 420 intangible cultural heritage (ICH) elements. Through integrated Geographical Information System (GIS) spatial analyses—encompassing nearest neighbor index, kernel density estimation, standard deviation ellipse assessment, multi-ring buffer zoning, and Geodetector modeling, the spatiotemporal distribution features of cultural heritage were quantitatively characterized, with a focus on identifying the underlying driving factors shaping its spatial configuration. The analysis yields four main findings: (1) both TCH and ICH exhibit significant spatial clustering patterns across historical periods, with TCH distribution displaying an axis-core structure centered on the canal, whereas ICH evolved from dispersed to clustered configurations. (2) The center of gravity of TCH is primarily around Taihu Lake, while that of ICH is mainly on the south side of Taihu Lake, and the direction of distribution of both is consistent with the direction of the canal. (3) Multi-ring buffer analysis indicates that 77.2% of TCH and 49.8% of ICH clusters are concentrated within 0–10 km of the canal, demonstrating distinct spatial patterns: TCH exhibits a gradual canal-dependent density decrease with distance, whereas ICH reveals multifactorial spatial dynamics. (4) Human activity factors, particularly nighttime light intensity, are identified as predominant drivers of heritage distribution patterns, with natural environmental factors exerting comparatively weaker influence. These findings provide empirical support for developing differentiated conservation strategies for canal-related cultural heritage. The methodology offers replicable frameworks for analyzing heritage corridors in complex historical landscapes, contributing to both applied conservation practices and theoretical advancements in cultural geography. The main goal of this study is to investigate the possibility of using residual materials (biomass derived from used cooking oils and lignocellulosic biomass from plant waste) on a large scale for producing renewable fuels and, in particular, the best way to collect them. The methodology of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) as well as spatial analysis (SA) techniques were used to investigate the Greek case for this. The data recorded in the geographic database were quantities of waste cooking and household oils as well as quantities of lignocellulosic biomass. The most common global and local indices of spatial autocorrelation were used. Concerning the biomass derived from used cooking oils, it was found that their quantities were important (163.17 million L/year), and these can be used to produce green diesel in the context of the circular economy. Although the dispersion of the used cooking oils was wide, there is no doubt that their concentration in large cities and tourist areas is higher. This finding suggests a collection process that could be carried out mainly in these areas through the development of small autonomous collection units in each neighborhood and central processing plants in small regional units. The investigation of the geographical–spatial distribution of residual lignocellulosic biomass showed the geographical fragmentation and heterogeneity of the distributions. The quantities recorded were significant (4.5 million tons/year) but widely dispersed, such that the cost of collecting and transporting the biomass to central processing plants could be prohibitive. The “geography” of the problem itself suggests solutions of small mobile collection units in every part of the country. The lignocellulosic biomass would be collected and converted in situ into bio-oil by rapid pyrolysis carried out in a tanker vehicle. This would transport the produced bio-oil to the nearest oil refineries for the conversion of bio-oil into biofuels through deoxygenation processes. Full article

With the global shift in energy systems and the growing adoption of renewable energy, photovoltaic power generation has become widely implemented worldwide as a clean and efficient energy source. Therefore, scientific and rational locating methods for photovoltaic power stations has become essential. This study employs a particle swarm optimization (PSO) model based on the fuzzy analytic hierarchy process (FAHP) for evaluating the site-suitability of photovoltaic power stations. Taking Qujing City in Yunnan Province as an example, this study comprehensively considered 13 factors in three categories: meteorology, physical geography, and location. In addition, such topographic factors as planar curvature, profile curvature, and LSW were added to the physical geography factors for consideration. In previous studies, less attention has been paid to these factors. Spatial analysis and data integration of influencer factors in the study area were carried out in geographic information system (GIS) technology, with weights assigned for each factor in combination with a fuzzy analytic hierarchy process, but a low consistency effect was delivered. To optimize the consistency effect, the particle swarm optimization algorithm was introduced, and weights with good consistency effects were obtained. Based on such weights, the suitability evaluation was carried out to select photovoltaic power stations. The evaluation results were compared with those obtained from the fuzzy analytic hierarchy process and the genetic algorithm (GA) optimization model based on FAHP and were further verified in the area of the photovoltaic power stations built. It is demonstrated that the accuracy rate of the suitability of Qujing photovoltaic power station site selection based on the particle swarm optimization model of the fuzzy analytic hierarchy process was the highest at 99.3%. In recent years, secondary schools and university departments related to geography have begun to teach various topics using Geographic Information Systems (GIS). In particular, WebGIS, available online without installing additional software, is recognized as a powerful educational tool for educators and students. However, research on how students perceive and utilize digital maps to understand geographical objects and investigate the complexity of such learning is insufficient. Therefore, we initiated a study to clarify these research questions by implementing Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) education using a digital hazard map developed with WebGIS technology, focusing on young people in Japan, including secondary school and university students. The results indicate that DRR education using a simple digital map is helpful for a wide range of students regardless of age. Still, some perceive difficulty in learning to use a digital hazard map. Map representation strongly affects students’ interpretation of vulnerable areas. The maps’ layers and functions are more useful when added gradually, corresponding to students’ ability and familiarity with GIS in the initial stage of geography education using maps to prevent students’ negative impressions caused by complex issues and technical problems. Floods pose significant challenges globally, particularly in coastal regions like the Philippines, which are vulnerable to typhoons and subsequent inundations. This study focuses on Naic city in Cavite, Philippines, using Geographic Information Systems (GIS) to develop flood risk maps employing two Multi-Criteria Decision-Making (MCDM) methods including Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP) and Technique for Order Preference by Similarity to Ideal Solution (TOPSIS). These maps integrate hazard, vulnerability, and exposure assessments to identify structures most vulnerable to flooding. Weight assignments in the study are derived from a literature review and expert opinions, reflecting the Philippines’ flood-prone geography and historical data. Structural attributes, categorized on a low to very high scale, were assessed based on field survey data from 555 buildings. AHP categorized 91.3% of buildings as moderate to very high risk, whereas TOPSIS placed 68% in this category, underscoring methodological disparities in data handling and assumptions. This research enhances understanding of flood threats and offers a decision-making framework for resilient flood risk management strategies. Identifying vulnerable buildings aims to support informed urban planning and disaster preparedness in flood-prone areas, thereby mitigating potential property, infrastructure, and livelihood damage. Foreign direct investment (FDI) by transnational companies (TNCs) is the primary indicator of urban globalization. The initial publication on the topic of remote sensing and geographic information system-based urban globalization research was published in 1981. However, the number of publications on this topic remains relatively limited. Despite some advances in the field in recent decades, there is currently no comprehensive review of related research, and it is not clear how the different perspectives and views have been developed. Furthermore, previous literature reviews on the utilization of remote sensing and GIS technology in urban development have predominantly employed quantitative methodologies, which has resulted in a paucity of qualitative analysis. In order to address these shortcomings, this paper employs a mixed-methods approach, integrating quantitative and qualitative analyses. This entails the utilization of a combination of the scientometric method and a qualitative literature review method. The findings are as follows: (1) The number of publications is still relatively limited, and research in this area is still in its infancy. (2) Some of the articles are evidently interdisciplinary in nature. (3) Progress has been made in terms of geographic visualization of FDI, macro-environmental research at different scales, global value chains, the micro-geography of TNCs, and globalization of the geo-information industry. (4) The spatial and temporal development pattern, location, and accessibility of FDI have constituted a significant area of research interest in the past. Similarly, the relationships between FDI and regional development, urban growth, land use, and environmental change have emerged as prominent research directions. China’s Belt and Road Initiative is an emerging popular topic. (5) In recent years, there has been a notable increase in the number of papers employing multi-source data and multi-method approaches. (6) The extent of research collaborations between countries is relatively limited, with the majority of such collaborations occurring within the past five years. Finally, based on these research findings, this paper suggests future research directions. Full article

Climate change is causing a range of environmental impacts, including increased flood frequency and intensity, posing significant risks to human populations and transportation infrastructure. Assessing flood risk under climate change is critical, but it is challenging due to uncertainties associated with climate projections and the need to consider the interactions between different factors that influence flood risk. Geographic Information Systems (GISs) are powerful tools that can be used to assess flood risk under climate change by gathering and integrating a range of data types and sources to create detailed maps of flood-prone areas. The primary goal of this research is to create a comprehensive GIS-based flood risk map that includes various climate change scenarios derived from the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project Phase 6 (CMIP6) models. This goal will leverage the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) methodology to better understand the impacts of these climate change scenarios on the transportation network. Furthermore, this study aims to evaluate the existing flood risk map and assess the potential impacts of prospective climate scenarios on the levels of flood risk. The results showed that the northern and coastal regions of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) are at higher risk of flooding, with the majority of the population living in these areas. The projections for future flood risk levels indicate that under the SSP245 scenario, flood risk levels will generally be low, but some areas in the northern and eastern regions of the UAE may still face high to very high flood risk levels due to extensive urbanization and low-lying coastal regions. Under the SSP585 scenario, flood risk levels are projected to be significantly higher, with a widespread distribution of very high and high flood risk levels across the study area, leading to severe damage to infrastructure, property, and human lives. The recent publication of the CMIP6 models marks a significant advancement, and according to the authors’ knowledge, there have been no studies that have yet explored the application of CMIP6 scenarios. Consequently, the insights provided by this study are poised to be exceptionally beneficial to researchers globally, underscoring the urgent necessity for holistic sustainable flood risk management approaches for geography, planning, and development areas. These approaches should integrate both sustainable transportation infrastructure development and risk mitigation strategies to effectively address the anticipated impacts of flooding events within the study region. The traditional villages in the Miao Frontier Corridor are the products of migrations, social interactions, and transportation, as well as production interchanges between the central plains and the frontiers of China in ancient times. They have made significant contributions to local multicultural inheritance and regional social development. However, with the increasing pressure of heritage conservation and sustainable development, there is growing attention on how traditional villages can tap into their cultural continuity and distinctiveness. This study introduces the concept of cultural routes, with the aim of integrating traditional villages of different ethnicities, regions, and characteristics from the perspective of diversity. It analyzes their spatial differentiation characteristics and the factors influencing them, providing basic support for the overall protection of traditional villages with special characteristics. Following this idea, 338 remaining traditional villages in the Miao Frontier Corridor were selected as the research objects. With the help of 91-satellite maps and a geographic information system (GIS), a cultural and geographic database of the traditional villages in the Miao Frontier Corridor was constructed to objectively explore the roles of the traditional villages’ natural geography, historical, and humanistic elements in the spatial categorization on a large scale. This study shows that the spatial distribution of the traditional villages in the Miao Frontier Corridor is uneven, exhibiting a cluster structure with of a “single primary nucleus with multiple secondary nuclei”. The spatial differentiation of traditional villages exhibits a similar clustering pattern based on individual natural geographic factors, such as elevation, mountain undulation, slope, and water systems. Additionally, there is discernible regularity concerning historical and humanistic factors, such as ethnicity type, age of village establishment, and the presence of guard stations. Further exploring the micro-spatial level, the natural geographical environment serves as the structural foundation of traditional village space, while the historical and humanistic environment fosters multiple differentiations in traditional village space in terms of influencing factors. Together, these factors jointly influence the spatial differentiation of traditional villages. This study enriches the dynamic aspects of linear cultural heritage preservation and also provides new insights into the specialized development within the overall protection of traditional villages. The subject of this research was to develop an effective strategy for combining various data sources, including the feasibility of implementing BIM in CityGML into an existing system supported by the GIS program. The study analyzed the path for converting BIM files to the CityGML format and the course of transmission of this data and data from the completed queries to the GIS program. An overview of external sources, map services, tools for acquiring accurate information about the terrain, and IT tools that could potentially be used was also carried out. The collected data proved deficiencies in the geospatial information of the analyzed area, defining the type of missing data necessary for the planned analyses. The results made it possible to determine further work and the basis for developing a plugin for the QGIS program. The plugin should facilitate energy efficiency, urban, and architectural analyses. The article also discusses the future opportunities for developing research directions for developing new 3D models of cities and collecting data for analysis. The analyses took into account the directions of geometric changes in 3D models as the result of the rapid development of digital tools. Ultimately, this research demonstrated the development demand for modern digital tools in the context of spatial and urban analysis, emphasizing the dynamic evolution in the field of GIS and the prospects of accelerating work on the integration of spatial data and their analysis thanks to the possibility of using open-source programs and our own efforts for their expansion. In geography education, geospatial technologies have been actively researched and widely used in combination with classroom inquiry and fieldwork. Recently, emerging data sources and technologies, such as open data, big data, and Artificial Intelligence (AI), are now gaining attention for their educational potential. In this study, both existing and emerging data and technologies are combined and grouped into four categories: (1) Geospatial Web service, (2) open data and big data, (3) fieldwork using Geographic Information Systems (GIS), (4) AI and coding. And based on these, geospatial inquiry activities for learning high school Korean Geography were developed. Learning to use these data sources and technologies is expected to equip students with essential 21st century skills. Full article

Sibuyan Island is experiencing a significant increase in electricity demand due to population growth, urbanization, and industrial development. The island plans to use solar energy, recognizing its abundance and renewable nature; thus, this study was conducted to visualize the spatial distribution of solar exploration suitability using a geographic information system (GIS). Various criteria, including climatology, location, geography, meteorology, and disaster susceptibility, were considered in the assessment. Parameters affected by government policies, such as protected areas, proximity to rivers, roads and faults, ancestral domains, and proclaimed watersheds, were also considered. Parameters were weighted, and suitability levels were highlighted using AHP. The study revealed that about 5.88% (2674.06 km2) of the island was categorized as highly suitable for a solar farm, 34.99% (15,908.21 km2) as suitable, 2.49% (1129.95 km2) as moderately suitable, and the majority, 56.64% (25,754.47 km2), was considered not suitable for solar projects. A solar power suitability map was developed as a reference for local governments and residents in establishing solar PV systems in their respective sites, thus maximizing the full potential of their land. The study also directs future solar power exploration studies in Sibuyan Island, supporting ongoing efforts to maximize solar energy utilization. Full article
