The lithium resource reserves in Xinjiang’s Dahongliutan reach 1.1 million tons, making it one of the most representative spodumene deposits in China. Through process mineralogy analysis, the ore was identified as having inherent characteristics that control density-based separation: Coarse crystallization, a high monomer dissociation degree, and a density contrast. Based on these mineralogical characteristics, dense-medium separation experiments were conducted to investigate the mineralogically controlled separation behavior as a function of particle size and medium density. Three process flows (two-product, pressureless three-product, and two-stage, two-product) were further designed and comparatively evaluated. It indicated that the dense-medium separation efficiency is positively correlated with the monomer dissociation degree of spodumene, and the 0.5~6 mm size fraction is the optimal particle size range because it achieves a balance between ore crushing dissociation and coarse-grain dense-medium separation adaptation. Furthermore, all three dense media processes can save grinding energy, and each of them has its own advantages and disadvantages. Comprehensively considering the grade of the concentrate, recovery, the grade of the tailings, and grinding energy consumption, it is recommended to adopt a combined process of two-stage, two-product dense-medium separation and flotation. Remote sensing technology has significant technical advantages over traditional geological methods in geological mapping and mineral resource exploration, especially in high-altitude and steep topography areas. Geochemical sampling and geological mapping methods in these areas are difficult to use directly in mountainous regions such as West Kunlun. Therefore, in the face of Li-Be-Nb-Ta mineralization of the Dahongliutan rare-metal pegmatite deposit in West Kunlun, remote sensing has become an effective means to identify areas of interest for exploration in the early stage of the exploration campaigns. Several methods have been developed to detect pegmatites. Still, in this study, this methodology is based on spectral analysis to select bands of the ASTER and Landsat-8 OLI satellites, and methods, such as principal component analysis (PCA) and mixture tuned matched filtering (MTMF), to delineate the prospective areas of pegmatite. The results proved that PCA could map the hydrothermal alteration and structure information for pegmatites. To define new locations of interest for exploration, we introduced the spectra of spodumene-bearing pegmatites and tourmaline-bearing pegmatites as endmembers for the MTMF approach. The results indicate that the location of pegmatite areas on the ASTER and Landsat-8 OLI images overlaps with the ore deposits, and the location of potential ore-bearing pegmatites is delineated using remote sensing and geological sampling. Although this does not guarantee that all prospective areas have the mining value of ore-bearing pegmatites, it can provide basic data and technical references for early exploration of Li. Rare metals such as lithium and beryllium are strategic mineral resources that play a highly significant role in the national aerospace, defense, and new energy industries. The western Kunlun–Songpan–Ganzi metallogenic belt is an important rare metal metallogenic belt in China that mainly consists of granite–pegmatite-type lithium–beryllium deposits with uncommon beryllium-only deposits. In the Jiulong area on the southeastern edge of this metallogenic belt, several deposits, including the Daqianggou lithium–beryllium, Luomo beryllium, Baitai beryllium, and Shangjigong beryllium deposits, have been identified. Unlike the northern areas of Jiajika, Ke’eryin, Zawulong, and the western regions of Dahongliutan and Bailongshan, this area contains beryllium-only deposits. In this paper, we examine representative beryllium deposits in the Jiulong area, including detailed petrographic observations and laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS) U-Pb isotope dating of cassiterite and columbite–tantalite, to define the metallogenic age and summarize the spatiotemporal characteristics of the beryllium mineralization in this area. The research results show that the Daqianggou lithium–beryllium deposit is dominated by spodumene and beryl mineralization, while the Luomo and Baitai beryllium deposits primarily feature beryl mineralization. The dating results indicate that the U-Pb ages of the cassiterite and columbite–tantalite in the Daqianggou lithium–beryllium deposit are 157.3 ± 1.7 Ma and 164.1 ± 0.8 Ma, respectively. For the Luomo beryllium deposit, the U-Pb ages of the cassiterite and columbite–tantalite are 156.1 ± 1.5 Ma and 163.3 ± 0.8 Ma, respectively. For the Baitai beryllium deposit, the U-Pb age of the columbite–tantalite is 188.8 ± 1.1 Ma. Therefore, the Jiulong area experienced two pegmatite-type rare metal metallogenic events: a beryllium–niobium–tantalum–molybdenum event at 197~189 Ma and a lithium–beryllium–niobium–tantalum–rubidium event at 164~156 Ma. Based on the reported metallogenic ages, we suggest that the western Kunlun–Songpan–Ganzi rare metal metallogenic belt experienced three rare metal metallogenic events at 210~200 Ma, 200~180 Ma, and 170~150 Ma. Regarding exploration directions, early Yanshanian beryllium mineralization predominates in the Jiulong area along the southeastern edge of the belt, and deep exploration of the early Yanshanian rare metal mineralization within this belt should be strengthened to facilitate new breakthroughs. Post-collisional potassic magmatic rocks are widely distributed in the northwestern Tibetan Plateau, yet their magmatic processes remain poorly understood. Here, we present a comprehensive analysis of the whole-rock major and trace elements, as well as the mineral textures and chemistry of the Dahongliutan volcanic rocks in the NW Tibetan Plateau, aiming to reveal the magmatic processes prior to eruption and speculate on the triggering mechanism. The results show that the Dahongliutan volcanic rocks are potassic trachyandesites, which undergo polybaric crystallization during magma ascension. The phenocrysts in these potassic rocks exhibit various textural and compositional zoning styles. The green cores of green-core clinopyroxenes show textural (e.g., resorption texture) and chemical (Fe-rich) disequilibrium with the host rock compositions, suggesting that they may be antecrysts and crystallized from early batches of more evolved magmas. Additionally, alkali feldspar phenocrysts also display disequilibrium characteristics (e.g., overgrowth rim and sieve texture), indicating hot mafic magma recharge and mixing in the magma plumbing system. Therefore, we conclude that the disequilibrium textural and compositional features of green-core clinopyroxene and alkali feldspar phenocrysts provide evidence of magma recharge and mixing prior to eruption. Furthermore, it is likely that the eruption of the Dahongliutan volcano was triggered by magma recharge. Full article

Lithium (Li) resources are widely used in many strategic emerging fields; recently, several large-scale to super-large-scale pegmatite-type lithium deposits have been discovered in Dahongliutan, NW China. However, the natural environmental conditions in the Dahongliutan area are extremely harsh; hence, manpower in field exploration is difficult to achieve. Efficient and rapid methods for identifying Li-rich pegmatites, based on hyperspectral remote sensing technology, have great potential for promoting the discovery of lithium resources. Ground spectral research is the cornerstone of regional hyperspectral imaging (HSI) for geological mapping. Direct observation and analysis by the naked eye are part of a process that is mainly dependent upon abundant experience and knowledge from experts. Machine learning (ML) technology has the advantages of automatic feature extraction and relationship characterization. Therefore, identifying the spectral features of Li-rich pegmatite via ML can accurately and efficiently distinguish the spectral characteristics of Li-rich pegmatites and Li-poor pegmatites, enabling further excavation to identify the strongest predictors of Li-pegmatite and laying a foundation for the accurate extraction of Li-rich pegmatites in the West Kunlun region using HSI. The spectral characteristics of pegmatite in the visible near-infrared and shortwave infrared (VNIR–SWIR) spectra were observed and analyzed. Li-rich pegmatite was identified based on the diagnostic spectral waveform characteristic parameters of the local wavelength range. The results demonstrated that the pegmatite ML recognition model was based on spectral characteristic parameters of the local wavelength range, with good model explicability, and the area under the curve (AUC) calculated for the model is 0.843. A recognition model based on full-range spectrum data achieved a higher precision, and the AUC value was up to 0.977. The evaluation of the Gini coefficient presented the strongest predictors, which were used to map the spatial distribution lithology, based on GF-5, in Akesayi and the 509 mines, producing encouraging lithological mapping results (Kappa > 0.9, OA > 94%). Triassic granitoids are abundant on the northwestern margin of the Tibetan Plateau. The Dahongliutan pluton, located in the eastern Western Kunlun orogen, formed in the Late Triassic.Previous field studies have identified potential mixing of crustal and mantle magmas. In this study, we used zircon U–Pb ages and major and trace elemental analyses to investigate the tectonic evolution of the pluton, and to determine whether any exchange of mantle-derived material occurred between the pluton and the source area. We found that the pluton has relatively high SiO2 contents, and the aluminum saturation index is consistent with peraluminous high-K calc-alkaline granite. The pluton is enriched in light rare earth elements; both light and heavy rare earth elements are highly fractionated. The magma that formed the pluton was predominantly derived from the crust; however, a small amount of upper mantle material was involved in the early stages of magma formation. The pluton underwent composite emplacement as a result of tectonic extension and magmatic emplacement, which may have occurred in the late Triassic post-collisional orogenic stage. Late Triassic magmatism provided heat and ore-forming material for Pb–Zn, Cu, Fe, and rare metal mineralization, which is of considerable importance for geological prospecting. Full article

Granitic pegmatite deposits, which are usually products of orogenic processes during plate convergence, can be used to demonstrate regional tectonic evolution processes. In the eastern Tibetan Plateau in China, the Jiajika, Dahongliutan, Xuebaoding, Zhawulong, and Ke’eryin rare metal pegmatite deposits are located in the southern, western, northern, midwestern, and central areas of the Songpan–Ganzê orogenic belt, respectively. In this study, we dated two muscovite Ar–Ar ages of 189.4 ± 1.1 Ma and 187.0 ± 1.1 Ma from spodumene pegmatites of the Dahongliutan deposit. We also dated one zircon U-Pb age of 211.6 ± 5.2 Ma from muscovite granite, two muscovite Ar–Ar ages of 179.6 ± 1.0 Ma and 174.3 ± 0.9 Ma, and one columbite–tantalite U-Pb age of 204.5 ± 1.8 Ma from spodumene pegmatites of the Zhawulong deposit. In addition, we dated one muscovite Ar–Ar age of 159.0 ± 1.4 Ma from spodumene pegmatite of the Ke’eryin deposit. Combining these ages and previous studies in chronology, we concluded that the granitic magma in the Jiajika, Xuebaoding, Dahongliutan, Zhawulong, and Ke’eryin deposits intruded into Triassic metaturbidites at approximately 223, 221, 220–217, 212, and 207–205 Ma, respectively, and that the crystallization of the corresponding pegmatite ceased at approximately 199–196, 195–190, 189–187, 180–174, and 159 Ma, respectively. In this study, we demonstrated that the peak in magmatic activity and the final crystallization age of the pegmatite lagged behind one another from the outer areas of the orogeny belt to the inner areas. The pegmatite–parented granitic magmas were sourced from Triassic metaturbidites that were melted by shear heating along the large-scale decollement resulting from Indosinian collisions along the North China block, Qiangtang–Changdu block, and Yangtze block. As a result, the above temporal and spatial regularities indicated that the tectonic–thermal stress resulting from the collisions of three blocks was transferred from the outer areas of the orogenic belt to the inner areas. A large amount of heat and a slow cooling rate at the convergent center of thermal stress in two directions will lead to crystallization and differentiation of magma in the Songpan–Ganzê orogenic belt, forming additional rare metal deposits. The Kangxiwa–Dahongliutan pegmatite field in the Western Kunlun Orogen, China contains numerous granitic pegmatites around a large granitic pluton (the Dahongliutan Granite with an age of ca. 220 to 217 Ma), mainly including barren garnet-, tourmaline-bearing pegmatites, Be-rich beryl-muscovite pegmatites, and Li-, P-rich albite-spodumene pegmatites. The textures, major element contents, and trace element concentrations of columbite-group minerals (CGM) and cassiterite from three albite-spodumene pegmatites in the region were investigated using a combination of optical microscopy, SEM, EPMA and LA-ICP-MS. The CGM can be broadly classified into four types: (1) inclusions in cassiterite; (2) euhedral to subhedral crystals (commonly exhibiting oscillatory and/or sector zoning and coexisting with magmatic cassiterite); (3) anhedral aggregates; (4) tantalite-(Fe)-ferrowodginite (FeSnTa2O8) intergrowths. The compositional variations of CGM and cassiterite are investigated on the mineral scale, in individual pegmatites and within the pegmatite group. The evolution of the pegmatites is also discussed. The variation of Nb/Ta and Zr/Hf ratios of the cassiterite mimics the Nb-Ta and Zr-Hf fractionation trends in many LCT pegmatites, indicating that these two ratios of cassiterite may bear meanings regarding the pegmatite evolution.
