The present study investigates how US Southerners perceive second language (L2) speech by recruiting 170 undergraduate students who spoke Southern American English to listen to recordings of four speakers (US, Bangladeshi, Chinese, and Saudi Arabian) and evaluate their attributes. The listeners were grouped based on their ethnic affiliation: African American, Anglo-American, and Asian/Hispanic/multi-racial. A random half were primed, being asked questions about whether/how other people had negatively commented on their accents. Results showed no effect of priming on speech ratings. Moreover, whilst African American and Anglo-American listeners rated L2 speakers lower than the L1 speaker in almost all aspects, Asian/Hispanic/multi-racial listeners did not. Full article

Human activities at unprecedented levels have exacerbated the greenhouse effect and escalated the frequency of extreme weather. In response, the Chinese government has pledged to reach “carbon peak” by 2030 and achieve “carbon neutrality” by 2060. Leveraging the GOSAT L3 and L4B CO2 datasets, this study investigated the spatiotemporal and vertical characteristics of atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2) concentration across China, alongside quantifying the relative importance of key influencing factors. The results show that there is a distinct regional disparity in CO2 column concentration, with eastern China having a higher concentration level (406.85 × 10−6) than the western regions (400.92 × 10−6). Vertically, the concentration of CO2 (390–420 × 10−6) reaches its peak at the near-surface layer (975 hPa) and then decreases with increasing altitude. High values of CO2 levels in the mid-lower layer are concentrated in eastern China, while those in the upper layer are mainly located in southern China. In addition, CO2 concentration shows seasonal variations, with the highest concentration occurring in spring (406.39 × 10−6) and the lowest in summer. Biospheric emissions and fossil fuel combustion emerge as the two most significant factors affecting CO2 variation, with relative importance of 24% and 22%, respectively. Full article

Objectives: (R)-ketamine hydrochloride injection is a novel, rapid-acting antidepressant for the treatment of treatment-resistant depression. The aim of this study was to assess the pharmacokinetics, safety, and tolerability of (R)-ketamine hydrochloride injection in healthy Chinese subjects following ascending single intravenous doses ranging from 10.0 mg to 180 mg. Methods: This randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study was conducted in 50 healthy male and female Chinese subjects after single ascending doses of (R)-ketamine hydrochloride injection (10.0, 30.0, 60.0, 120, and 180 mg). Ten subjects (including two subjects treated with a placebo) were included in each dose cohort. Pharmacokinetic characteristics, safety, and tolerability profiles of the study drug were evaluated. Results: After the intravenous doses administered from 10.0 mg to 180 mg of (R)-ketamine hydrochloride injection to the subjects, the Cmax and AUC values for both (R)-ketamine and its metabolite (R)-norketamine in the subjects increased approximately proportionally to the doses. The average peak plasma concentration levels at the five dose cohorts ranged from 56.0 to 1424 ng/mL and 27.7 to 491 ng/mL for (R)-ketamine and (R)-norketamine, respectively. The adverse events of (R)-ketamine hydrochloride injection were temporary and recovered spontaneously without treatment. Conclusions: In summary, (R)-ketamine hydrochloride injection was safe and well tolerated in healthy Chinese subjects. The clinical study results laid a foundation for the further clinical studies of (R)-ketamine hydrochloride injection in patients. Full article

(1) Background: The escalating issue of soil degradation caused by excessive chemical fertilizer application poses significant threats to the sustainable development of Chinese flowering cabbage (Brassica campestris L. ssp. chinensis (L.) var. utilis Tsen et Lee) production. This research aimed to identify the impacts of reduced chemical fertilizer application integrated with organic amendments on cabbage yield and rhizosphere soil microenvironment characteristics. (2) Methods: A biennial field experiment was conducted during the 2022–2023 growing seasons at Lijun Town, Yinchuan City, Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region. Five treatments were tested: (i) Control (CK, no fertilizer); (ii) Conventional chemical fertilization (CF1, chemical fertilizer only); (iii) Reduced chemical fertilization (CF2, 30% less chemical fertilizer); (iv) CF2 + Well-decomposed chicken manure (FCM, 30% less chemical fertilizer + rotted chicken manure); and (v) CF2 + Vermicompost (FEM, 30% less chemical fertilizer + vermicompost). (3) Results: In 2023, the FCM treatment reduced electrical conductivity (EC) by 24.80% and pH by 2.16%, while the FEM treatment decreased EC by 31.13% and pH by 3.84% compared to controls. The FEM treatment significantly enhanced total nitrogen content by 12.71% and 8.85% relative to CF1 and FCM treatments, respectively. Compared to CF1, FEM increased soil organic matter content by 10.49% in 2022 and 11.24% in 2023. Organic fertilizer amendments elevated available nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium levels while enhancing sucrase activity: FCM and FEM treatments increased sucrase activity by 23.62% and 32.00%, respectively, in 2022. Organic fertilization improved bacterial diversity and richness, optimized microbial community structure, and increased the relative abundance of Bacillus. It also upregulated microbial metabolic pathways related to carbohydrate and amino acid metabolism. Soil nutrients and bacterial community structure showed positive correlations with yield, whereas soil enzyme activities exhibited negative correlations. Key factors influencing yield were identified as Proteobacteria, Chloroflexi, available potassium, organic matter, available nitrogen, Actinobacteria, Firmicutes, total nitrogen, pH, and sucrase activity. (4) Conclusions: Integrated analysis of yield and soil microenvironmental parameters demonstrates that the fertilization regimen combining 30% chemical fertilizer reduction with vermicompost amendment (FEM) constitutes a more efficient fertilization strategy for Chinese flowering cabbage, making it suitable for regional promotion in the Ningxia area. Approaches to writing play an important role in both the writing processes and outcomes. However, little is known about whether L2 writers adopt different combinations of approaches in academic writing contexts and what factors predict such combinations. Hence, this study aimed to identify different profiles of approaches to writing in an L2 academic context and examine how they are predicted by writing self-efficacy and large language model (LLM) acceptance. To this end, a total of 578 Chinese graduate students were recruited to participate in the study. Latent profile analysis revealed three distinct writing profiles: unorganized (Profile 1), dissonant (Profile 2), and deep and organized (Profile 3), with the majority of students categorized under the dissonant profile. Additionally, multinomial logistic regression analysis revealed that writing self-efficacy positively predicted profile membership, with the strongest effect observed for Profile 3, followed by Profile 2 and then Profile 1. LLM acceptance also positively predicted profile membership, with the strongest effect for Profile 2, followed by Profile 3 and then Profile 1. Full article

Viola philippica (VP), a traditional Chinese medicinal herb widely used for its antibacterial and antioxidant properties, has recently garnered attention for its potential in skin photoprotection. VP was extracted using glycerol (GLY), 1,3-propanediol (PDO), and 1,3-butanediol (BDO) at concentrations of 30%, 60%, and 90% (w/w) to evaluate its antioxidant and UV-protective properties. The total phenolic content (TPC) and total flavonoid content (TFC) of the nine extracts ranged from 34.73 to 71.45 mg GAEs/g and from 26.68 to 46.68 mg REs/g, respectively, with the highest TPC observed in 90% PDO and the highest TFC in 60% GLY. Antioxidant assays revealed IC50 values of 0.49–1.26 mg/mL (DPPH), 0.10–0.19 mg/mL (ABTS), and 1.58–460.95 mg/mL (OH). Notably, the 60% GLY, 30% PDO, and 90% PDO extracts demonstrated notable protective effects against UVB-induced cell damage, reducing intracellular ROS levels and preventing DNA damage. RNA-seq analysis revealed that the protective effects were associated with the modulation of key molecular pathways, including neutrophil extracellular trap formation and TNF, IL-17, and HIF-1 signaling. These findings suggest that Viola philippica polyol extracts, particularly those using 60% GLY, 30% PDO, and 90% PDO, have promising potential for skin photoprotection and could be utilized as natural antioxidants in cosmetic formulations. Photoperiod sensitivity significantly affects the reproductive process of plants. The CONSTANS, CONSTANS-LIKE, and TOC1 (CCT) genes play pivotal roles in photoperiod sensitivity and regulating flowering time. However, the function of the CCT gene in regulating flowering varies among different species. Further research is needed to determine whether it promotes or delays flowering under long-day (LD) or short-day (SD) conditions. CCT MOTIF FAMILY (CMF) belongs to one of the three subfamilies of the CCT gene and has been proven to be involved in the regulation of circadian rhythms and flowering time in cereal crops. In this study, 60 CCT genes in Chinese cabbage were genome-wide identified, and chromosomal localization, gene duplication events, gene structure, conserved domains, co-expression networks, and phylogenetic tree were analyzed by bioinformatics methods. The specific expression patterns of the BrCMF gene in different tissues, as well as the transcriptome and RT-qPCR results under different photoperiodic conditions, were further analyzed. The results showed that BrCMF11 was significantly upregulated in ebm5 under LD conditions, suggesting that BrCMF11 promoted flowering under LD conditions in Chinese cabbage. These findings revealed the function of the BrCCT gene family in photoperiod flowering regulation and provided a prominent theoretical foundation for molecular breeding in Chinese cabbage. The Shenduntou Site, a significant Zhou Dynasty settlement in Anhui Province, provides rare insights into early Chinese woodcraft. This study examines exceptionally preserved wooden structures from Well J1, dating to the Western Zhou period (9th–8th c. BCE). Anatomical analysis identified the timber as Firmiana simplex (L.), indicating ancient selection of this locally available species for its water resistance and mechanical suitability in well construction. Comprehensive degradation assessment revealed severe structural deterioration: maximum water content (1100% ± 85% vs. modern 120% ± 8%) demonstrated extreme porosity from hydrolysis; X-ray diffraction (XRD) showed a 69.5% reduction in cellulose crystallinity (16.1% vs. modern 52.8%); Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) spectroscopy confirmed near-total hemicellulose degradation, partial cellulose loss, and lignin enrichment due to chemical recalcitrance; Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) imaging documented multiscale damage including vessel thinning, pit membrane loss, and cell wall delamination from hydrolytic, microbial, and mineral degradation. These findings reflect Western Zhou inhabitants’ pragmatic resource utilisation while highlighting advanced material deterioration that poses significant conservation challenges, providing critical insights into Zhou-era woodcraft and human–environment interactions in the lower Yangtze region. The “milky disease” in Chinese mitten crabs (Eriocheir sinensis), caused by Metschnikowia bicuspidata, poses significant threats to aquaculture, though its pathogenic mechanisms remain poorly understood. This study employs transcriptomic sequencing to analyze gene expression changes in Metschnikowia bicuspidata under hemocyte challenge, iron overload (1 mmol/mL), and combined stress, with functional validation through Common in Fungal Extracellular Membrane (CFEMgene) overexpression strains. Key findings reveal that (1) hemocyte challenge activated base excision repair (−log10[P] = 7.58) and ribosome biogenesis pathways, indicating fungal adaptation through DNA repair and enhanced protein synthesis to counter host immune attacks (e.g., ROS-mediated damage). (2) Iron overload induced glutathione metabolism and pentose phosphate pathway enrichment, demonstrating mitigation of ferroptosis through NADPH/GSH antioxidant systems and autophagy/proteasome coordination. (3) Under combined stress, ribosome biogenesis (−log10[P] = 1.3) and non-homologous end-joining pathways coordinated DNA repair with stress protein synthesis, complemented by vacuolar V-ATPase-mediated iron compartmentalization. (4) CFEM genes showed significant upregulation under hemocyte stress, with overexpression strains exhibiting enhanced biofilm formation (35% increased MTT cytotoxicity) and infectivity (40% higher infection rate), confirming CFEM domains mediate pathogenesis through iron homeostasis and virulence factor production. This work elucidates how M. bicuspidata employs metabolic reprogramming, oxidative stress responses, and CFEM-mediated iron regulation to establish infection, providing critical insights for developing targeted control strategies against milky disease. Grass carp in aquaculture exhibited symptoms of bacterial infection leading to mortality. To investigate the cause of the disease and control grass carp infections, samples from diseased grass carp were collected, and a bacterial strain named XH-1 was isolated from the internal organs of the infected fish. Artificial infection experiments were conducted to determine whether the isolated strain XH-1 was the pathogenic bacterium. The biological characteristics of the isolated strain were studied through a 16S rRNA sequence analysis, physiological and biochemical identification, and phylogenetic tree construction. Extracts from 14 traditional Chinese herbs were tested to evaluate their bacteriostatic and bactericidal effects on the isolated strain. The regression infection experiment confirmed that the isolated strain XH-1 was the pathogenic bacterium causing the grass carp disease. Biological characterization studies identified the bacterium as Aeromonas veronii, which is clustered with A. veronii MW116767.1 on the phylogenetic tree. Among the 14 Chinese herbal extracts, Lignum sappa, Pericarpium granna, Artemisia argyi, Scutellaria baicalensis Georgi, Coptis chinensis, and Artemisiacapillaris thunb exhibited significant bacteriostatic effects on XH-1. Lignum sappa showed the highest sensitivity to A. veronii, with the largest inhibition zone diameter, and its minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) and minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC) were 7.813 mg/mL and 15.625 mg/mL, respectively. As the concentration of Lignum sappa extract increased, its bacteriostatic and bactericidal effects strengthened. When the concentration exceeded 14 mg/mL, it maintained strong bactericidal activity over 32 h. This study on A. veronii XH-1 provides theoretical insights for the prevention of grass carp aquaculture diseases and the use of traditional Chinese herbs for treatment. Full article

The Pécel loess–paleosol profile is a 25.72-metre-high well-preserved sequence in the northern part of Hungary. It was sampled every 4 cm for the purpose of sedimentological analysis and every 12 cm for the purpose of mollusc investigation, which are relatively high resolutions in loess investigation. Twenty samples were radiocarbon-dated from the L1 layer (top 8 m of the sequence). Subsequently, an age–depth model was constructed, from which an accumulation rate was calculated. Based on these radiocarbon and previous magnetic susceptibility data, the Pécel’s L1 layer is correlated with the Chinese Loess Plateau’s L1 layer and the MIS 2–4 stages. The malacological examinations show that the temperature was basically warm during the development, and there was open vegetation except on the S2, S1 and L1S1 paleosol layers, where significant forest expansion was shown. With the magnetic susceptibility and the malacological data, it is possible to track the changes in the conditions through the Chinese Loess Plateau’s timeline. Full article

Hunan Province, as a representative gathering place of HMIs, is among the regions in China that are the most severely polluted with heavy metals. This paper selected Hunan Province as the study area to analyze the development trend, characteristics of pollution emissions, and environmental impacts of seven HMIs based on emission permit information data from Hunan Province. The results of this study show that (1) from 2000 to 2022, the number of heavy metal-related enterprises in Hunan Province increased overall. Among the seven industries, the chemical product manufacturing industry (CPMI) had the largest number of enterprises, whereas the nonferrous metal smelting and rolling industry (NSRI) had the highest gross industrial product (27.6%). (2) HMIs in Hunan Province had significant emissions of cadmium (Cd), arsenic (As), and hydargyrum (Hg) from exhaust gas and wastewater. Heavy metal-related exhaust gas and wastewater outlets from the NSRI constituted 43.9% and 35.3%, respectively, of all outlets of the corresponding type. The proportions of exhaust gas outlets involving Cd, Hg, and As from the NSRI to total exhaust gas outlets were 44.27%, 60.54%, and 34.23%, respectively. The proportions of wastewater outlets involving Cd, Hg, and As from the NSRI to total wastewater outlets were 61.13%, 57.89%, and 75.30%, respectively. (3) The average distances of heavy metal-related enterprises from arable land, rivers, and flooded areas in Hunan Province were 256 m, 1763 m, and 3352 m, respectively. Counties with high environmental risk (H-L type) were situated mainly in eastern Hunan. Among them, Chenzhou had the most heavy metal-related wastewater outlets (22.7%), and Hengyang had the most heavy metal-related exhaust gas outlets (23.1%). The results provide a scientific basis for the prevention and control of heavy metal pollution and an enhancement in environmental sustainability in typical Chinese areas where HMIs are concentrated. Honeysuckle, derived from the dried flower buds or blossoms of Lonicera japonica Thunb, is a traditional Chinese medicine known for its properties in eliminating heat and toxins, reducing inflammation, and alleviating swelling. In this study, we investigated the potential therapeutic and preventive benefits of L. japonica extract on inflammatory diseases induced by lipopolysaccharide (LPS) using Misgurnus anguillicaudatus as a model organism. The fish were fed a diet supplemented with L. japonica extract, followed by LPS injection to induce inflammation. We then analyzed the transcriptional profile to identify differentially expressed genes (DEGs). A total of 6611 DEGs were identified through comprehensive analysis, including Gene Ontology (GO) and Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) pathway enrichment analyses. Our results revealed significant enrichment of DEGs in pathways associated with proteasome function, immune system regulation, and infectious disease response. These findings suggest a strong correlation between L. japonica and immune defense mechanisms, providing valuable insights into the potential anti-inflammatory effects of this plant, particularly in the context of LPS-induced inflammation. This study highlights the potential use of L. japonica in treating inflammatory diseases and underscores its role in immune regulation. Full article

Biochar has demonstrated effectiveness in environmental remediation. However, the physicochemical properties of biochar change with natural aging, which potentially impacts its efficacy. This study was designed to evaluate the effects of aged biochar (at 1% and 5% rates) on the growth of Chinese cabbage, greenhouse gas emission, and Cd remediation in soils. Canada goldenrod (Solidago canadensis L.) feedstock biochar was subjected to three artificial aging processes (freeze–thaw cycle, dry–wet cycle, and hydrogen peroxide oxidation) to prepare aged biochar. Results showed that aging significantly altered properties and structure of biochar. Biochar addition had no effect on CH4 emissions, but it decreased cumulative N2O emission (all treatments) and increased cumulative CO2 emission (only the pristine biochar at 5% application rate). Aged biochar showed no effect on microbial life strategy and Shannon index. However, PB-5% application shifted the life history strategies of A-strategists (resource acquisition microbe) towards Y-strategists (high-yield microbe) such as Proteobacteria, Gemmatimonadota, Bacteroidota, Firmicutes and Actinobacteriota, which partially attributed to the enhanced soil CO2 emission. Aged biochar reduced plant uptake Cd and soil available Cd concentrations by up to 36.6% and 34.0%, respectively, ascribing to improved soil physicochemical properties and functional bacterial abundance. Chinese lacks explicit word boundary markers, creating frequent temporary segmental ambiguities where character sequences permit multiple plausible lexical analyses. Skilled native (L1) Chinese readers resolve these ambiguities efficiently. However, mechanisms underlying word segmentation in second language (L2) Chinese reading remain poorly understood. Our study investigated: (1) whether L2 readers experience greater difficulty processing temporary segmental ambiguities compared to L1 readers, and (2) whether visual boundary cues can facilitate ambiguity resolution in L2 reading. We measured the eye movements of 102 skilled L1 and 60 high-proficiency L2 readers for sentences containing temporarily ambiguous three-character incremental words (e.g., “音乐剧” [musical]), where the initial two characters (“音乐” [music]) also form a valid word. Sentences were presented using either neutral mono-color displays providing no segmentation cues, or color-coded displays marking word boundaries. The color-coded displays employed either uniform coloring to promote resolution of the segmental ambiguity or contrasting colors for the two-character embedded word versus the final character to induce a segmental misanalysis. The L2 group read more slowly than the L1 group, employing a cautious character-by-character reading strategy. Both groups nevertheless appeared to process the segmental ambiguity effectively, suggesting shared segmentation strategies. The L1 readers showed little sensitivity to visual boundary cues, with little evidence that this influenced their ambiguity processing. By comparison, L2 readers showed greater sensitivity to these cues, with some indication that they affected ambiguity processing. The overall sentence-level effects of color coding word boundaries were nevertheless modest for both groups, suggesting little influence of visual boundary cues on overall reading fluency for either L1 or L2 readers.
