Large-Scale Spatiotemporal Patterns of Burned Areas and Fire-Driven Mortality in Boreal Forests (North America)

Due to climate effects and human influences, wildfire regimes in boreal forests are changing, leading to profound ecological consequences, including shortened fire return intervals and elevated tree mortality. However, a critical knowledge gap exists concerning the spatiotemporal dynamics of fire-induced tree mortality specifically within the vast North American boreal forest, as previous studies have predominantly focused on Mediterranean and tropical forests. Therefore, in this study, we used satellite observation data obtained by the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) Aqua and Terra MCD64A1 and related database data to study the spatial and temporal variability in burned area and forest mortality due to wildfires in North America (Alaska and Canada) over an 18-year period (2003 to 2020). By calculating the satellite reflectance data before and after the fire, fire-driven forest mortality is defined as the ratio of the area of forest loss in a given period relative to the total forest area in that period, i.e., the area of forest loss divided by the total forest area. Our findings have shown average values of burned area and forest mortality close to 8000 km2/yr and 40%, respectively. Burning and tree loss are mainly concentrated between May and September, with a corresponding temporal trend in the occurrence of forest fires and high mortality. In addition, large-scale forest fires were primarily concentrated in Central Canada, which, however, did not show the highest forest mortality (in contrast to the results recorded in Northern Canada). Critically, based on generalized linear models (GLMs), the results showed that fire size and duration, but not the burned area, had significant effects on post-fire forest mortality. Overall, this study shed light on the most sensitive forest areas and time periods to the detrimental effects of forest wildfire in boreal forests of North America, highlighting distinct spatial and temporal vulnerabilities within the boreal forest and demonstrating that fire regimes (size and duration) are primary drivers of ecological impact. These insights are crucial for refining models of boreal forest carbon dynamics, assessing ecosystem resilience under changing fire regimes, and informing targeted forest management and conservation strategies to mitigate wildfire impacts in this globally significant biome. The aim of this study was to compare the forces and moments exerted by thermoformed aligners (TFMs) and direct printed aligners (DPAs) on the maxillary left central incisor (21) and adjacent teeth (11, 22) during lingual bodily movement of tooth 21. Methods: An in vitro setup was used to quantify forces and moments on three incisors, which were segmented and fixed onto multi-axis force/moment transducers. TFM were fabricated using 0.76 mm-thick single-layer PET-G foils (ATMOS; American Orthodontics, Sheboygan, WI, USA) and multi-layer TPU foils (Zendura FLX; Bay Materials LLC, Fremont, CA, USA). DPAs were fabricated using TC-85 photopolymer resin (Graphy Inc., Seoul, Republic of Korea). Tooth 21 was planned for bodily displacement by 0.25 mm and 0.50 mm, and six force and moment components were measured on it and the adjacent teeth. Results: TC-85 generated lower forces and moments with fewer unintended forces and moments on the three teeth. TC-85 exerted 0.99 N and 1.53 N of mean lingual force on tooth 21 for 0.25 mm and 0.50 mm activations, respectively; ATMOS produced 3.82 N and 7.70 N, and Zendura FLX produced 3.00 N and 8.23 N of mean lingual force for the same activations, respectively. Bodily movement could not be achieved. Conclusions: The force systems generated by clear aligners are complex and unpredictable. DPA using TC-85 produced lower, more physiological force levels with fewer side effects, which may increase the predictability of tooth movement and enhance treatment outcome. The force levels generated by TFM were considered excessive and not physiologically compatible. Full article

Nephrogenic diabetes insipidus (NDI) is a rare hereditary disorder characterized by renal resistance to arginine vasopressin (AVP), resulting in the kidneys’ inability to concentrate urine. Approximately 90% of NDI cases follow an X-linked inheritance pattern and are associated with pathogenic variants in the AVPR2 gene, which encodes the vasopressin receptor type 2. The remaining 10% are attributed to mutations in the AQP2 gene, which encodes aquaporin-2, and may follow either autosomal dominant or recessive inheritance patterns. We present the case of a male infant, younger than nine months of age, who was clinically diagnosed with NDI at six months. The patient presented recurrent episodes of polydipsia, polyuria, dehydration, hypernatremia, and persistently low urine osmolality. Despite adjustments in pharmacologic treatment and strict monitoring of urinary output, the clinical response remained suboptimal. Given the lack of improvement and the radiological finding of an absent posterior pituitary (neurohypophysis), the possibility of coexistent central diabetes insipidus (CDI) was raised, prompting a therapeutic trial with desmopressin. Nevertheless, in the absence of clinical improvement, desmopressin was discontinued. The patient’s management was continued with hydrochlorothiazide, ibuprofen, and a high-calorie diet restricted in sodium and protein, resulting in progressive clinical stabilization. Whole-exome sequencing identified a novel homozygous missense variant in the AQP2 gene (c.398T > A; p.Val133Glu), classified as likely pathogenic according to the American College of Medical Genetics and Genomics (ACMG) criteria: PM2 (absent from population databases), PP2 (missense variant in a gene with a low rate of benign missense variation), and PP3 (multiple lines of computational evidence supporting a deleterious effect)]. NDI is typically diagnosed during early infancy due to the early onset of symptoms and the potential for severe complications if left untreated. In this case, although initial clinical suspicion included concomitant CDI, the timely initiation of supportive management and the subsequent incorporation of molecular diagnostics facilitated a definitive diagnosis. The identification of a previously unreported homozygous variant in AQP2 contributed to diagnostic confirmation and therapeutic decision-making. The diagnosis and comprehensive management of NDI within the context of polyuria-polydipsia syndrome necessitates a multidisciplinary approach, integrating clinical evaluation with advanced molecular diagnostics. The novel AQP2 c.398T > A (p.Val133Glu) variant described herein was associated with early and severe clinical manifestations, underscoring the importance of genetic testing in atypical or treatment-refractory presentations of diabetes insipidus. Bird migration routes across North America, which are often speculated upon at the microscale, are now subject to scrutiny using the ‘eBird’ database, the world’s largest data repository for the North American continent. This database has steadily accumulated data on resident and migratory birds, with annual data on both potentially revealing regional trends. Through analysis of eBird data accumulated since 1980, we identified regional trends indicating bird migration patterns across North America, delineating three primary regions within the North American flyway: the western, central and eastern flyways, with the latter further subdivided into three regions. These findings refine previous categorisations of the four major flyways, deepening our understanding of bird migration dynamics in North America. Full article

The Western genre has traditionally been associated with American identity and male-dominated narratives. However, recent decades have seen increasing attention to female protagonists, particularly the European woman as a cultural mediator within the frontier context. This study aims to identify the archetypes of the European woman in the Western genre through a diachronic and comparative analysis of the visual language found in European painting from the late 17th to early 19th centuries and in 20th–21st century cinema. The research methodology combines narrative, visual, and semiotic analysis, with a focus on intermedial and intertextual parallels between visual art and film. The study identifies nine archetypal models corresponding to goddesses of the Greek pantheon and traces their transformation across different aesthetic systems. These archetypes, rooted in artistic traditions such as Baroque, Classicism, Romanticism, and others, reappear in Western films through compositional, symbolic, and iconographic strategies, demonstrating their persistence and ability to transcend temporal, medial, and geographical boundaries. The findings suggest that the woman in the Western genre is not merely a central character, but a visual sign that activates cultural memory and engages with deep archetypal structures embedded in the collective unconscious. We performed a diagnostic disease investigation on a wild smallmouth bass (Micropterus dolomieu) with skin ulcers that was collected from Lake Oahe, South Dakota, following reports from anglers of multiple fish with similar lesions. Gross and histologic lesions of ulcerative dermatitis, myositis, and lymphocytolysis within the spleen and kidneys were consistent with largemouth bass virus (LMBV) infection. LMBV was detected by conventional PCR in samples of a skin ulcer, and the complete genome sequence of the LMBV (99,184 bp) was determined from a virus isolate obtained from a homogenized skin sample. A maximum likelihood (ML) phylogenetic analysis based on the major capsid protein (MCP) gene alignment supported the LMBV isolate (LMBV-SD-2023) as a member of the species Ranavirus micropterus1, branching within the subclade of LMBV isolates recovered from North American largemouth (Micropterus salmoides) and smallmouth bass. This is the first detection of LMBV in wild smallmouth bass from South Dakota. The ultrastructure of the LMBV isolate exhibited the expected icosahedral shape of virions budding from cellular membranes. Viral nucleic acid in infected cells was visualized via in situ hybridization (ISH) within dermal granulomas, localized predominantly at the margin of epithelioid macrophages and central necrosis. Further sampling is needed to determine the geographic distribution, affected populations, and evolutionary relationship between isolates of LMBV. Full article

Throughout history, communities have struggled to build homes in places actively hostile to their presence, a challenge long faced by African descendants in the American diaspora. In cities across the U.S., including Washington, D.C., efforts have often been made to erase Black cultural identity. D.C., once a hub of Black culture, saw its urban fabric devastated during the 1968 riots following Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s assassination. Since then, redevelopment has been slow and, more recently, marked by gentrification, which has further displaced Black communities. Amid this context, Black architects such as Michael Marshall, FAIA, and Sean Pichon, AIA, have emerged as visionary leaders. Their work exemplifies Value-Inclusive Design and aligns with Roberto Verganti’s Design-Driven Innovation by embedding cultural relevance and community needs into development projects. These architects propose an intentional approach that centers Black identity and brings culturally meaningful businesses into urban redevelopment, shifting the paradigm of design practice in D.C. This collective case study (methodology) argues that their work represents a distinct architectural style, Black Modernism, characterized by cultural preservation, community engagement, and spatial justice. This research examines two central questions: Where does Black Modernism begin, and where does it end? How does it fit within and expand beyond the broader American Modernist architectural movement? It explores the consequences of the destruction of Black communities, the lived experiences of Black architects, and how those experiences are reflected in their designs. Additionally, the research suggests that the work of Black architects aligns with heutagogical pedagogy, which views community stakeholders not just as beneficiaries, but as educators and knowledge-holders in architectural preservation. Findings reveal that Black Modernism, therefore, is not only a design style but a method of reclaiming identity, telling untold histories, and building more inclusive cities. Full article

Background: Genetic insights from diverse populations are key to advancing cancer detection, treatment, and prevention. Unlike other Latin American countries, Colombia lacks a centralized registry for germline and somatic mutations in breast and ovarian cancer. This study describes the country’s first national variant registry, and the occurrence of recurrent mutations and potential founder effects in Colombia. Methods: To address this gap, we implemented the first capturing protocol using the REDCap system. In a group of 213 breast and/or ovarian cancer patients harboring genetic mutations, we collected genetic, clinical, and demographic data from 13 regional centers across Colombia. Statistical analyses assessed variant distribution and patient demographics. Results: Among 229 identified variants (105 germline, 124 somatic), most were classified as pathogenic or likely pathogenic (72.4% germline, 87% somatic). BRCA1 and BRCA2 accounted for the majority of recurrent mutations. Germline recurrent variants (seen >3 times) were recorded for BRCA1 (77.7%; 21/27) and BRCA2 (22.3%; 6/27). Similarly, recurrent somatic variants were identified for BRCA1 (82.6%; 38/46) and BRCA2 (17.4%; 8/46). Notably, four recurrent variants were previously reported as founder mutations: BRCA1 c.1674del (14.3% germline and 23.7% somatic), BRCA1 c.3331_3334del (33.3% germline and 52.6% somatic), BRCA1 c.5123C>A (52.4% germline and 23.7% somatic), and BRCA2 c.2808_2811del (50% germline and 50% somatic). Most cases originated from the Andean region, highlighting regional disparities. Conclusions: This registry offers the first overview of genetic variants in Colombian breast and ovarian cancer patients. Recurrent and region-specific mutations highlight the need for population-focused data to guide targeted screening and personalized care strategies. Full article

Ponderosa pine (Pinus ponderosa Lawson & C. Lawson) forests in the western United States have experienced reduced fire frequency since Euro-American settlement, usually because of successful fire suppression policies and even without such human impacts at remote sites in the Great Basin and Mojave Deserts. In an effort to improve our understanding of long-term environmental dynamics in sky-island ecosystems, we developed tree-ring chronologies from ponderosa pines located in the Sheep Mountain Range of southern Nevada, inside the Desert National Wildlife Refuge (DNWR). After comparing those dendrochronological records with other ones available for the south-central Great Basin, we analyzed their climatic response using station-recorded monthly precipitation and air temperature data from 1950 to 2024. The main climatic signal was December through May total precipitation, which was then reconstructed at annual resolution over the past five centuries, from 1490 to 2011 CE. The mean episode duration was 2.6 years, and the maximum drought duration was 11 years (1924–1934; the “Dust Bowl” period), while the longest episode, 19 years (1905–1923), is known throughout North America as the “early 1900s pluvial”. By quantifying multi-annual dry and wet episodes, the period since DNWR establishment was placed in a long-term dendroclimatic framework, allowing us to estimate the potential drought resilience of its unique, tree-dominated environments. “Know that in place of a heart I carry a tongue,” writes the unnamed poetic speaker of Mexican poet Balam Rodrigo’s Central American Book of the Dead. This documentary poetic text alternates between the voices of Central American immigrants journeying north and a subtle yet bold revision of Fray Bartolomé de las Casas’s A Brief Account of the Destruction of the Indies, with some words from the Friar’s 1552 text replaced by other words that reflect the realities of twenty-first century immigrants traveling north. Interspersed with de la Casas’s texts are persona poems in which we are invited to listen to the ghosts of immigrants who have suffered tragic deaths. This essay explores the ways that, crossing borders between time and space while drawing strength from his Christian faith, Rodrigo resists the erasure of Indigenous peoples, honors their journeys, and invites readers into solidarity. This community-based participatory research (CBPR) study explored, using a Photovoice methodology, the lived expeiences of northeastern Black and/or African American youth and mothers who were currently experiencing the incarceration of their fathers and husbands. Grounded in critical theories of dual consciousness and comparative conflict, the findings provide valuable insights into how this population navigates the intersections of family, school, and community within the context of the criminal legal system, and, in the process, underscore the relevance of Abolitionist practice in capturing their theoretically lived experiences. Participants documented through photography and narrative reflections the multifaceted impacts of incarceration on fathers and husbands, including disrupted family dynamics, social stigma, and barriers to community resources. A focus group with the mothers of these youth highlighted the profound impact of incarceration on their family structure, revealing significant emotional burdens for caregivers as well as personal changes to parenting styles as a result of this project. A central theme that emerged was the development of a “double” or “dual consciousness”—an ability to see humanity and injustice in their circumstances, fueling a desire for systemic change. Overall, this CBPR project amplifies the voices of marginalized youth and mothers, illuminating how the criminal legal system perpetuates cycles of trauma, stigma, and disempowerment. The implications call for a radical reimagining of the role of social work in creating more equitable, restorative, and healing-centered communities, including an immediate embrace of Abolitionist practice concepts and interventions. Healthcare accessibility is among the most critical challenges affecting millions, reflecting profound geospatial disparities in Latin America. This study aims to evaluate healthcare service geospatial accessibility patterns, comparing the geospatial coverage between public and private healthcare facilities in Santiago district, Panama. We first apply the Two-Step Floating Catchment Area (2SFCA) method and its extended variant (E2SFCA) to calculate geospatial accessibility indexes at public and private healthcare facilities. We then use Getis–Ord Gi* and Local Moran geospatial statistical analysis to identify significant clusters of high and low accessibility. The results reveal that public healthcare facilities still offer higher geospatial coverage than private healthcare facilities, with higher geospatial accessibility in the central zone and lower geospatial accessibility in the south zone of Santiago. These findings highlighted the location of new healthcare facilities in zones with lower geospatial accessibility coverage. This study provides reproducible methodological tools for other geographical contexts. It also contributes to improving decision-making and formulating public policies to reduce spatial disparities in healthcare services in Panama and other Caribbean and Latin American countries. The Nariño Cat, the Tigrinas and Their Problematic Systematics and Phylogeography: The Real Story

The systematics and phylogeny of the most speciose genus (Leopardus) of the felidae have historically been contentious and problematic. These issues have been compounded with the recent advancement of genetic techniques that make it possible to detect events such as incomplete lineage sorting (ILS), punctual historical ancestral introgression (PHAI), and repetitive introgression or recent hybridization (RI-RH). Each of these events have noteworthily affected the Leopardus genus. One Leopardus taxon (Leopardus tigrinus, herein called tigrina) has been especially complex from a phylogenetic point of view. In the last decade, one new species has been reported (L. guttulus) and two other new species likely exist within the tigrinas (L. emiliae and L. pardinoides). However, the most surprising find was the discovery of a new and not previously reported tigrina, the Nariño cat, from the southern Andean region of Colombia (2023). Later that same year, a new paper criticized the discovery. In response to that criticism, herein, we provide new molecular genetics results of the Nariño cat as well as new insights into the molecular phylogeny of the tigrinas inside the Leopardus genus: (1) In this new work, we analyzed the mtND5 gene of Nariño cat samples collected over four years (2001, 2007, 2017, 2023) as well as analyzed mitogenomes of Nariño cat samples collected in three different years (2001, 2017, 2023). The temporal Nariño cat samples (2001, 2007, 2017, 2023) refer to samples taken from a single specimen across different years. Based on these analyses, data from 2001 and 2007 represent the most reliable information. In contrast, samples from 2017 and 2023 may be contaminated with DNA from the Pampas cat and tigrina, respectively. (2) On the other hand, based on sequencing the mtND5 gene of 164 specimens of Leopardus, northern Andean and Central American tigrinas (37 specimens) are divided into at least six different groups (without counting the Nariño cat). Based on our analysis of sequenced mitogenomes of 102 specimens (including 34 northern Andean and Central American tigrinas) of the Leopardus genus, there are at least eight different groups of tigrinas (without counting the Nariño cat). Henceforth, there are strong datasets which support the existence of multiple lineages within the presumed “a priori” northern Andean tigrina and thus much of the genetic diversity of this wild cat has gone unnoticed. There are a series of potential taxa that have gone unnoticed due to a lack of sampling of this polyphyletic Andean feline. Full article

The Analysis of the Extreme Cold in North America Linked to the Western Hemisphere Circulation Pattern

The Western Hemisphere (WH) circulation pattern was discovered in recent years through Self-Organizing Maps (SOMs) clustering of the Northern Hemisphere 500 hPa geopotential height during winter. For example, the extremely cold wave that occurred in North America during 2013–14 is associated with WH circulation anomalies. We discussed the extremely cold weather conditions within the WH pattern during the winter season from 1979 to 2023. The variations of cold air in North America during the WH pattern have been demonstrated using the NCEP/NCAR reanalysis datasets. By defining WH events and North American extremely cold events, we have identified a connection between the two. In extremely cold events, linear winds are the key factor driving the temperature drop, as determined by calculating temperature advection. The ridge in the Gulf of Alaska serves as an early signal for this cold weather. The WH circulation anomaly triggers an anomalous ridge in the Gulf of Alaska region, leading to trough anomalies downstream over North America. This results in the southward movement of cold air from the polar regions, causing cooling in the mid-to-northern parts of North America. With the maintenance of the stationary wave in the North Pacific (NP), the anomalous trough over North America can be deepened, driving cold air into the continent. Influenced by the low pressure over Greenland and the storm track, the cold anomalies are concentrated in the central and northern parts of North America. This cold air situation persists for approximately two weeks. The high-level patterns of the WH pattern in both the 500 hPa height and the troposphere level have been identified using SOM. This cold weather is primarily a tropospheric phenomenon with limited correlation to stratospheric activities. Full article

Introduction: Nonbinary individuals who do not identify as exclusively male or female often face unique emotional challenges due to societal cisheteronormativity and limited recognition of their identities. While existing research has primarily focused on anxiety, depression, and pathways to parenthood among nonbinary people, little attention has been paid to their comprehensive emotional experiences as parents. This study aims to explore the emotional universe of two nonbinary parents from Spain and the United States. Design: Hermeneutic study. Materials and Methods: We implemented purposive sampling, conducted semi-structured virtual interviews, and followed Ricoeur’s theory of interpretation for data analysis. We used the Universe of Emotions affective taxonomy as a starting category in this analysis. Our sample consisted of a 32-year-old white Spanish nurse (she/they/them), assigned female at birth and parent of two one-year-old toddlers, and a 34-year-old white North American physiotherapist (he/they/them) assigned female at birth and parent of a ten-year-old child. Results: Through its four themes (A story of misunderstanding: “What are you, a combat helicopter?”; Clearly, you don’t fit, so…; But (a new) family is there; No monster here: I’m, at the core, a human being), this study reveals the complex emotional journey experienced by two nonbinary parents. Conclusions: Central to this journey are three key emotions: strangeness, belonging, and acceptance. The participants describe an initial stage marked by body and social dysphoria, confusion, and rejection, followed by a transformative process in which parenthood becomes a catalyst for emotional and identity integration. This transition—from alienation to connection—reflects a broader movement from dehumanization to humanization, where the experience of parenting fosters emotional resilience, social recognition, and a renewed sense of self. Implications for the profession and/or patient care: Analyzing their emotions (both negative and positive ones), we obtained robust insights into these parents’ personal and social contexts. Therefore, we can facilitate understanding of the emotional complexity of nonbinary parents by the trans and cisgender communities. Through this understanding, nurses and the organizations they work for can improve their competence in their holistic care. Acceptance from nonbinary parents’ social contexts, of which nursing is a part, is a critical factor in their health and emotional wellbeing. Full article
