The carbon dioxide spillover effects and influencing factors of the “Belt and Road Initiative” (BRI) in African countries must be assessed to evaluate the effectiveness, promote low-carbon transmissions in African countries, and provide recommendations for achieving the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals. This novel study employs carbon dioxide emission intensity (CEI) and per capita carbon dioxide emissions (PCE) as dual indicators to evaluate the spatial spillover effects of 54 BRI African countries on their neighboring countries’ carbon emissions from 2007 to 2023. It identifies the key factors and mechanisms affecting these spillover effects using the spatial differences-in-differences (SDID) model. Results indicate that since the launch of the BRI, the CEI and PCE of BRI African countries have significantly increased, largely due to trade patterns and industrialization structures. Greater trade openness has further boosted local economic development, thereby increasing carbon dioxide’s spatial spillover. Government management and corruption control levels show some heterogeneity in the spillover effects, which may be attributed to long-standing issues of weak institutional enforcement in Africa. Overall, this study reveals the complex relationship between BRI African economic development and environmental outcomes, highlighting the importance of developing sustainable development strategies and establishing strong differentiated regulatory regimes to effectively address environmental challenges. Since 2014, the Paleoanthropology Group of the National Museum of Natural Sciences (CSIC), in collaboration with Equatoguinean researchers, has been conducting archeo-paleontological fieldwork in Equatorial Guinea, continuing a longstanding Spanish naturalist tradition in this region of West Central Africa. These multidisciplinary investigations, framed within an archeo-paleo-anthropological approach, aim primarily to identify early human occupation in the Central African rainforests. To date, robust evidence of Pleistocene human presence has been documented, particularly through lithic assemblages. Although the scarcity and fragmentation of well-dated sites in Central Africa complicate chronological placement, technological traits observed in the lithic industries recorded in Equatorial Guinea show clear affinities with the African Middle Stone Age (MSA). Complementary taphonomic analyses of faunal remains have been undertaken to better understand bone preservation and fossilization processes under tropical rainforest conditions, thereby contributing to the interpretation of archeological contexts. In parallel, ongoing primatological research within the project—focused on extant primates in their natural habitats—seeks to provide ethological models relevant to the study of hominin locomotor evolution. Notably, the project has led to the ecogeographic characterization of the Engong chimpanzee group in Monte Alén National Park, one of the country’s most pristine protected areas. Full article

In many developing African countries, milk safety is often managed through traditional methods such as fermentation or boiling over firewood. While these approaches reduce some microbial risks, they present critical limitations. Firewood dependency contributes to deforestation, depletion of agricultural residues, and loss of soil fertility, which, in turn, compromise environmental health and food security. Solar pasteurization provides a reliable and sustainable method for thermally inactivating pathogenic microorganisms in milk and other perishable foods at sub-boiling temperatures, preserving its nutritional quality. This study aimed to evaluate the thermal and microbial performance of a low-cost solar milk pasteurization system, hypothesized to effectively reduce microbial contaminants and retain milk quality under natural sunlight. The system was constructed using locally available materials and tailored to the climatic conditions of the Savanna ecological zone in West Africa. A flat-plate glass solar collector was integrated with a 0.15 cm thick stainless steel cylindrical milk vat, featuring a 2.2 cm hot water jacket and 0.5 cm thick aluminum foil insulation. The system was tested in Navrongo, Ghana, under ambient temperatures ranging from 30 °C to 43 °C. The pasteurizer successfully processed up to 8 L of milk per batch, achieving a maximum milk temperature of 74 °C by 14:00 GMT. Microbial analysis revealed a significant reduction in bacterial load, from 6.6 × 106 CFU/mL to 1.0 × 102 CFU/mL, with complete elimination of coliforms. These results confirmed the device’s effectiveness in achieving safe pasteurization levels. The findings demonstrate that this locally built solar pasteurization system is a viable and cost-effective solution for improving milk safety in arid, electricity-limited regions. Its potential scalability also opens avenues for rural entrepreneurship in solar-powered food and water treatment technologies. Full article

This paper investigates the cultural, spiritual, and ecological use and value of fish by-products in the material practices of Alaska Native (Indigenous Peoples are the descendants of the populations who inhabited a geographical region at the time of colonisation and who retain some or all of their own social, economic, cultural, and political institutions. In this paper, I use the terms “Indigenous” and “Native” interchangeably. In some countries, one of these terms may be favoured over the other.) and Greenlandic Inuit women. It aims to uncover how fish remnants—skins, bones, bladders, vertebrae, and otoliths—were transformed through tanning, dyeing, and sewing into garments, containers, tools, oils, glues, and adornments, reflecting sustainable systems of knowledge production rooted in Arctic Indigenous lifeways. Drawing on interdisciplinary methods combining Indigenist research, ethnographic records, and sustainability studies, the research contextualises these practices within broader environmental, spiritual, and social frameworks. The findings demonstrate that fish-based technologies were not merely utilitarian but also carried symbolic meanings, linking wearers to ancestral spirits, animal kin, and the marine environment. These traditions persisted even after European contact and the introduction of glass trade beads, reflecting continuity and cultural adaptability. The paper contributes to academic discourse on Indigenous innovation and environmental humanities by offering a culturally grounded model of zero-waste practice and reciprocal ecology. It argues that such ancestral technologies are directly relevant to contemporary sustainability debates in fashion and material design. By documenting these underexamined histories, the study provides valuable insight into Indigenous resilience and offers a critical framework for integrating Indigenous knowledge systems into current sustainability practices. Background: The Mediterranean-DASH Intervention for Neurodegenerative Delay (MIND) was a 3-year, multicenter, randomized controlled trial to test the effects of the MIND diet on cognitive decline in 604 individuals at risk for Alzheimer’s dementia. Here, we describe the genotyping, imputation, and quality control (QC) procedures for the genetic data of trial participants. Methods: DNA was extracted from either whole blood or serum, and genotyping was performed using the Infinium Global Diversity Array. Established sample and SNP QC procedures were applied to the genotyping data, followed by imputation using the 1000 Genomes Phase 3 v5 reference panel. Results: Significant study-site, specimen type, and batch effects were observed. A total of 494 individuals of inferred European ancestry and 58 individuals of inferred African ancestry were included in the final imputed dataset. Evaluation of the imputed APOE genotype against gold-standard sequencing data showed high concordance (98.2%). We replicated several known genetic associations identified from previous genome-wide association studies, including SNPs previously linked to adiponectin (rs16861209, p = 1.5 × 10−5), alpha-linolenic acid (rs174547, p = 1.3 × 10−7), and alpha-tocopherol (rs964184, p = 0.003). Conclusions: This dataset represents the first genetic resource derived from a dietary intervention trial focused on cognitive outcomes. It enables investigation of genetic contributions to variability in cognitive response to the MIND diet and supports integrative analyses with other omics data types to elucidate the biological mechanisms underlying cognitive decline. These efforts may ultimately inform precision nutrition strategies to promote cognitive health. Full article

Clozapine, a second-generation antipsychotic known for its effectiveness in treating resistant schizophrenia, is often linked with serious hematological side effects, particularly neutropenia and agranulocytosis. This review investigates the underlying pathophysiological mechanisms of clozapine-induced neutropenia (CIN) and agranulocytosis (CIA), outlines associated risk factors, and evaluates current clinical management strategies. Clozapine’s pharmacological profile, marked by its antagonism of dopamine D4 and serotonin receptors, contributes to both its therapeutic advantages and hematological toxicity. Epidemiological data show a prevalence of CIN and CIA at approximately 3.8% and 0.9%, respectively, with onset typically occurring within the first six months of treatment. Key risk factors include older age, Asian and African American ethnicity, female sex, and certain genetic predispositions. The development of CIN and CIA may involve bone marrow suppression and autoimmune mechanisms, although the exact processes remain partially understood. Clinical presentation often includes nonspecific symptoms such as fever and signs of infection, necessitating regular hematological monitoring in accordance with established guidelines. Management strategies include dosage adjustments, cessation of clozapine, and the administration of granulocyte colony-stimulating factors (G-CSF). Advances in pharmacogenomics show promise for predicting susceptibility to CIN and CIA, potentially improving patient safety. This review emphasizes the importance of vigilant monitoring and personalized treatment approaches to reduce the risks associated with clozapine therapy. Full article

This study investigates the effects of key atmospheric features on mineral dust emissions and transport in the Sahara–Sahel region, focusing on the Bodélé Depression, during June 2006 and 2011. We use a combination of high-resolution atmospheric simulations (AROME model), satellite observations (MODIS), and reanalysis data (ERA5, ECMWF) to examine the roles of the low-level jet (LLJ), Saharan heat low (SHL), Intertropical Discontinuity (ITD), and African Easterly Jet (AEJ) in modulating dust activity. Our results reveal significant interannual variability in aerosol optical depth (AOD) between the two periods, with a marked decrease in June 2011 compared to June 2006. The LLJ emerges as a dominant factor in dust uplift over Bodélé, with its intensity strongly influenced by local topography, particularly the Tibesti Massif. The position and intensity of the SHL also play crucial roles, affecting the configuration of monsoon flow and Harmattan winds. Analysis of wind patterns shows a strong negative correlation between AOD and meridional wind in the Bodélé region, while zonal wind analysis emphasizes the importance of the AEJ and Tropical Easterly Jet (TEJ) in dust transport. Surprisingly, we observe no significant correlation between ITD position and AOD measurements, highlighting the complexity of dust emission processes. This study is the first to combine climatological context and case studies to demonstrate the effects of African monsoon variability on dust uplift at intra-seasonal timescales, associated with the modulation of ITD latitude position, SHL, LLJ, and AEJ. Our findings contribute to understanding the complex relationships between large-scale atmospheric features and dust dynamics in this key source region, with implications for improving dust forecasting and climate modeling efforts. APTIMA mRNA vs. DNA-Based HPV Assays: Analytical Performance Insights from a Resource-Limited South African Setting

Cervical cancer remains a major health burden among women in sub-Saharan Africa, where screening is often limited. Persistent high-risk human papillomavirus (HR-HPV) infection is the principal cause, highlighting the need for accurate molecular diagnostics. This cross-sectional study evaluated the analytical performance of one mRNA assay, APTIMA® HPV assay (APTIMA mRNA), and two DNA-based assays, the Abbott RealTime High Risk HPV assay (Abbott DNA) and Seegene Allplex™ II HPV28 assay (Seegene DNA), in 527 cervical samples from a South African tertiary hospital, focusing on 14 shared HR-HPV genotypes. Seegene DNA yielded the highest detection rate (53.7%), followed by Abbott DNA (48.2%) and APTIMA mRNA (45.2%). APTIMA mRNA showed a strong agreement with Abbott DNA (87.9%, κ = 0.80), 89.9% sensitivity, 91.2% NPV, and the highest accuracy (AUC = 0.8804 vs. 0.8681). The agreement between APTIMA mRNA and Seegene DNA was moderate (83.4%, κ = 0.70), reflecting target differences. Many DNA-positive/mRNA-negative cases likely represent transient infections, though some may be latent with reactivation potential, warranting a follow-up. In resource-constrained settings, prioritizing transcriptionally active infections through mRNA testing may enhance screening efficiency and reduce burden. Scalable, cost-effective assays with strong clinical utility are essential for broadening access and improving cervical cancer prevention. Further studies should assess the integration of mRNA testing into longitudinal screening algorithms. Full article

The presence of Active Galaxy Nuclei (AGN) can affect the morphological classification of galaxies. This work aims to determine how the contribution of AGN affects the most-used morphological parameters down to the redshift of z ∼ 2 in COSMOS-like conditions. We use a sample of >2000 local non-active galaxies, with a well-known visual morphological classification, and add an AGN as an unresolved component that contributes to the total galaxy flux with 5–75%. We moved all the galaxies to lower magnitudes (higher redshifts) to map the conditions in the COSMOS field, and we measured six morphological parameters. The greatest impact on morphology occurs when considering the combined effect of magnitude, redshift, and AGN, with spiral galaxies being the most affected. In general, all the concentration parameters change significantly if the AGN contribution is >25% and the magnitude > 23. We find that the GINI coefficient is the most stable in terms of AGN and magnitude/redshift, followed by the moment of light (M20), Conselice–Bershady (CCON), and finally the Abraham (CABR) concentration indexes. We find that, when using morphological parameters, the combination of CABR, CCON, and asymmetry is the most effective in classifying active galaxies at high-redshift, followed by a combination of CABR and GINI. Pharmaceuticals are increasingly being detected in coastal ecosystems globally, but contamination and bioaccumulation levels are understudied in temporarily closed estuaries. In these systems, limited freshwater inputs and periodic closure may predispose them to pharmaceutical accumulation. We quantified in situ water column pharmaceutical levels at five sites in a temporarily closed model urban estuary (Zandvlei Estuary) in Cape Town, South Africa, that has been heavily anthropogenically modified. The results indicate an almost 100-fold greater concentration of pharmaceuticals in the estuary relative to False Bay, into which the estuary discharges, with acetaminophen (max: 2.531 µg/L) and sulfamethoxazole (max: 0.138 µg/L) being the primary pollutants. Acetaminophen was potentially bioaccumulative, while nevirapine, carbamazepine and sulfamethoxazole were bioaccumulated (BAF > 5000 L/kg) by sandprawns (Kraussillichirus kraussi), which are key coastal endobenthic ecosystem engineers in southern Africa. The assimilative capacity of temporarily closed estuarine environments may be adversely impacted by wastewater discharges that contain diverse pharmaceuticals, based upon the high bioaccumulation detected in key benthic engineers. Tropical sandy beaches are dynamic ecosystems where microbial communities play crucial roles in biogeochemical processes and tracking human impact. Despite their importance, these habitats remain underexplored. Here, using amplicon-based sequencing of bacterial (V3-V4 16S rRNA) and fungal (ITS2) markers, we first describe microbial communities inhabiting supralittoral–intertidal sediments of two contrasting sandy beaches in the Tadjoura Gulf (Djibouti Republic): Sagallou-Kalaf (SK, rural, siliceous sand) and Siesta Plage (SP, urban, calcareous sand). Sand samples were collected at low tide along 10 m transects perpendicular to the shoreline. Bacterial communities differed significantly between sites and along the sea-to-land gradient, suggesting an influence from both anthropogenic activity and sediment granulometry. SK was dominated by Escherichia-Shigella, Staphylococcus, and Bifidobacterium, associated with human and agricultural sources. SP showed higher richness, with enriched marine-associated genera such as Hoeflea, Xanthomarina, and Marinobacter, also linked to hydrocarbon degradation. Fungal diversity was less variable, but showed significant shifts along transects. SK communities were dominated by Kluyveromyces and Candida, while SP hosted a broader fungal assemblage, including Pichia, Rhodotorula, and Aureobasidium. The higher richness at SP suggests that calcium-rich sands, possibly due to their buffering capacity and greater moisture retention, offer more favorable conditions for microbial colonization. Food waste has emerged as a critical worldwide concern, resulting in environmental deterioration and economic detriment. Bio-based natural polymer coatings and films have emerged as a sustainable solution to food preservation challenges, particularly in reducing postharvest losses and extending shelf life. Compared to their synthetic counterparts, these polymers, such as chitosan, starch, cellulose, proteins, and alginate, are derived from renewable sources that are biodegradable, safe, and functional. Within this context, this review examines the various bio-based natural polymer coatings and films as biodegradable, edible alternatives to conventional packaging solutions. It examines the different fabrication methods, like solution casting, electrospinning, and spray coating, and incorporates antimicrobial agents to enhance performance. Emphasis is placed on their mechanical, barrier, and antimicrobial properties, their application in preserving fresh produce, how they promote food safety and environmental sustainability, and accompanying limitations. This review highlights the importance of bio-based natural polymer coatings and films as a promising, eco-friendly solution to enhancing food quality, safety, and shelf life while addressing global sustainability challenges. Climate Change of Near-Surface Temperature in South Africa Based on Weather Station Data, ERA5 Reanalysis, and CMIP6 Models

This study investigates changes in Near-Surface Air Temperature (NSAT) over the South African region using weather station data, reanalysis products, and Coupled Model Intercomparison Project Phase 6 (CMIP6) model outputs. It is shown that, based on ERA5 reanalysis, the average NSAT increase in the region (45–10° S, 0–50° E) for the period 1940–2023 was 0.11 ± 0.04 °C. Weak multi-decadal changes in NSAT were observed from 1940 to the mid-1970s, followed by a rapid warming trend starting in the mid-1970s. Weather station data generally confirm these results, although they exhibit considerable inter-station variability. An ensemble of 33 CMIP6 models also reproduces these multi-decadal NSAT change characteristics. Specifically, the average model-simulated NSAT values for the region increased by 0.63 ± 0.12 °C between the periods 1940–1969 and 1994–2023. Based on the results of the comparison between weather station observations, reanalysis, and models, we utilize projections of NSAT changes from the analyzed ensemble of 33 CMIP6 models until the end of the 21st century under various Shared Socioeconomic Pathway (SSP) scenarios. These projections indicate that the average NSAT of the South African region will increase between 1994–2023 and 2070–2099 by 0.92 ± 0.36 °C under the SSP1-2.6 scenario, by 1.73 ± 0.44 °C under SSP2-4.5, by 2.52 ± 0.50 °C under SSP3-7.0, and by 3.17 ± 0.68 °C under SSP5-8.5. Between 1994–2023 and 2025–2054, the increase in average NSAT for the studied region, considering inter-model spread, will be 0.49–1.15 °C, depending on the SSP scenario. Furthermore, climate warming in South Africa, both in the next 30 years and by the end of the 21st century, is projected to occur according to all 33 CMIP6 models under all considered SSP scenarios. The main spatial feature of this warming is a more significant increase in NSAT over the landmass of the studied region compared to its surrounding waters, due to the stabilizing role of the ocean. With the increasing detection of artemisinin resistance to front-line antimalarials in Africa and notwithstanding the planned roll-out of RTS’S and R21 in Africa, the search for new vaccines with high efficacy remains an imperative. Towards this endeavour, we performed in silico screening to identify Plasmodium falciparum gametocyte stage genes that could be targets of protection or diagnosis. Through the analysis we identified a gene, Pf3D7_1105800, coding for a Plasmodium falciparum subtilisin-like domain-containing protein (PfSDP) and thus dubbed the gene Pfsdp. Genetic diversity assessment revealed the Pfsdp gene to be relatively conserved across continents with signs of directional selection. Using RT qPCR and Western blots, we observed that Pfsdp is expressed in all developmental stages of the parasite both at the transcript and protein level. Immunofluorescence assays found PfSDP protein co-localizing with PfMSP-1 and partially with Pfs48/45 at the asexual and sexual stages, respectively. Further, we demonstrated that anti-PfSDP peptide-specific antibodies inhibited erythrocyte invasion by 20–60% in a dose-dependent manner, suggesting that PfSDP protein might play a role in merozoite invasion. We also discovered that PfSDP protein is immunogenic in children from different endemic areas with antibody levels increasing from acute infection to day 7 post-treatment, followed by a gradual decay. The limited effect of antibodies on erythrocyte invasion could imply that it might be more involved in other processes in the development of the parasite. Full article

Persons with disabilities face barriers to accessing sexuality education. For those who identify as queer, these challenges are compounded by stigma, ableism, and heteronormativity, resulting in distinct and overlooked experiences. This study explored the sexuality education needs of persons with disabilities who identify as queer in Kenya—a neglected demographic—using a phenomenological approach. Data were collected through a focus group discussion with six participants and analyzed thematically. Three themes emerged: invisibility and erasure; unprepared institutions and constrained support networks; and agency and everyday resistance. Educational institutions often overlook the intersectional needs of persons with disabilities who identify as queer, leaving them without adequate tools to navigate relationships, sexuality, and rights. Support systems are often unprepared or unwilling to address these needs. Societal attitudes that desexualize disability and marginalize queerness intersect to produce compounded exclusion. Despite these challenges, participants demonstrated agency by using digital spaces and informal networks to resist exclusion. This calls for policy reforms that move beyond tokenism to address the lived realities of multiply marginalized groups. Policy reform means not only a legal or governmental shift but also a broader cultural and institutional process that creates space for recognition, protection, and participation. Full article
