Depression affects approximately 280 million people worldwide and is becoming increasingly prevalent, particularly among young people. Despite numerous studies on the pathogenesis of this disorder, many factors remain unclear. New data in the literature suggest that proper concentrations of essential macro- and micronutrients play an important role in maintaining mental health and that disturbances in the metabolism of mineral compounds may contribute to the development and progression of depressive disorders. Numerous clinical and epidemiological studies have shown that low concentrations of these elements are associated with impaired neurotransmitter activity, increased exposure to oxidative stress, and neuroinflammation, all of which may contribute to the onset or exacerbation of depression. Additionally, some macro- and micronutrients may contribute to metabolic and hormonal disorders, thereby exacerbating their impact on mood regulation. A comprehensive literature search of the PubMed database covering the period from 2020 to 2025 yielded relevant human studies on calcium, magnesium, iron, zinc, copper, selenium, and iodine in relation to depression, which were selected based on predefined inclusion and exclusion criteria. This review summarizes the effects of calcium, magnesium, iron, zinc, copper, selenium, and iodine on supporting prevention, slowing progression, and helping treatment of depression. Understanding the impact of proper nutrition, including ensuring optimal concentrations of minerals, can help develop dietary strategies or proper supplementation of macronutrients and micronutrients aimed at preventing and improving the functioning of patients with depression. Juniperus communis L. can be used for essential oils and ornamental purposes, but currently the population is declining in its natural habitats as the seeds are very slow to germinate, with many seeds also empty. These findings could support both the conservation of J. communis and its adoption in sustainable agricultural systems. This study investigated the potential of vegetative propagation evaluating the effects of rooting medium, gender, and Indole 3-Butyric Acid (IBA) treatment on the rooting success of J. communis cuttings. Two types of rooting medium (RM_I vs. RM_II), gender (male vs. female) and two IBA concentrations (0 vs. 4000 ppm) were used. Rooting medium I (RM_I) consists of substrate and perlite (50% + 50%), and rooting medium II (RM II) contains unfertilized blonde peat (65%), substrate (25%), and perlite (10%). The results show the influence of rooting medium, IBA treatment, and gender on the rooting percentage and the number of the primary roots. Female cuttings are more likely to induce rooting than male cuttings (29.69% vs. 19.90%), and the RM_II produces a higher percentage of rooting than RM_I (28.89% vs. 20.70%). In relation to the number of roots per cutting, RM_II was higher than RM_I (7.46 vs. 6.04). Interaction between rooting medium and IBA treatment showed significant differences (p ≤ 0.05) in the rooting percentage. Results showed that cuttings treated with 4000 ppm IBA in RM_II achieved the highest rooting percentage (45.57%), with female cuttings outperforming male cuttings. Full article

Breast cancer (BC) is the most common type of cancer found in women. Detection of this cancer at an early stage is essential for effective treatment and a favorable prognosis. Potential early breast cancer biomarkers useful for diagnosing these tumors are microRNAs. These are small single-stranded RNA chains that can regulate the post-transcriptional expression of many different oncogenes. Cancer cells contain miRNAs that play a special role in the etiology of cancer development. The role of microRNAs in the initiation and development of breast cancer gives us great hope for the creation of molecular tools for early cancer detection. MicroRNAs are characterized by a high stability due to RNase, which protects them from degradation and enables their detection in various biological fluids. Researchers have described multiple serum microRNA signatures useful for detecting breast cancer. This review discusses the importance and potential usefulness of microRNAs in detecting breast cancer at an early stage, predicting the course of the disease, and assessing the effectiveness of treatment. This paper includes a review of the Palaearctic and Oriental species of the genus Lichenophanes Lesne, 1899. It contains a description of the new species, Lichenophanes juxtaorientalis n. sp., which occurs in Cyprus and Crete. A new subspecies, Lichenophanes varius turanicus n. subsp.—occurring in Crete, Cyprus, and the Middle East—was separated from the species Lichenophanes varius (Illiger) and described. Moreover, this paper characterizes L. carinatus (Lewis) n. stat., which had been treated as a synonym of L. carinipennis (Lewis). Two maps present the geographic distribution of particular species, and the final part of this paper contains keys to identify them. Full article

Smartphone addiction is very prevalent among university students and can negatively impact both their physical and mental health. This study aimed to translate the smartphone application-based addiction scale (SABAS) into Spanish and evaluate its psychometric properties among Spanish university students. A total of 297 university students (222 women and 75 men) participated in this study (M age = 20.88, SD = 4.58) by completing a sociodemographic questionnaire, the smartphone addiction scale-short version, the depression, anxiety, and stress scale-21, the fear of missing out scale, and the SABAS. The SABAS was translated into Spanish using the forward-backward method. The factor structure was analyzed using confirmatory factor analysis, while reliability was assessed with Cronbach’s alpha and McDonald’s omega coefficients. The SABAS showed acceptable reliability (α = 0.72; ω = 0.73), and all of its items were kept. Factor analysis revealed that the Spanish version of the SABAS was unifactorial and demonstrated excellent validity (χ2 = 10.285; p = 0.246; RMSEA = 0.034; CFI = 0.991; SRMR = 0.030). Significant associations were also observed between the SABAS score and the number of hours of smartphone use, fear of missing out, and psychological distress. Despite its brevity, the Spanish version of the SABAS provides good validity and reliability. Therefore, it can be used as a tool for screening smartphone addiction in Spanish university students. Endocrine disruptors such as 17α-ethinylestradiol pose significant ecological risks in aquatic environments. This study assessed the catalytic performance of Fe- and Cu-impregnated delaminated clays (DCs) and layered double hydroxides (LDHs) in a Fenton-like process for EE2 removal. The effects of key parameters—including hydrogen peroxide concentration, initial contaminant load, and catalyst dosage—were analyzed using HPLC-QqTOF. Delaminated clays (DCs) demonstrated higher removal efficiencies compared to layered double hydroxides (LDHs), reaching 55% with Fe and 47% with Cu, while LDHs achieved 40% and 33% for Fe and Cu, respectively. Ecotoxicity was evaluated using bioassays (L. sativa, S. capricornutum, D. magna) and the Ames test. Notably, S. capricornutum exhibited 100% inhibition at the highest tested concentration, with IC50 values of 11.2–12.4 for Cu and 31.5–32.7 for Fe. L. sativa was inhibited by Cu- and Fe-impregnated LDH/DC, with IC50 values of 71.0 (DC-Cu), 56.6 (DC-Fe), and 58.6 (LDH-Fe). D. magna exhibited 17–75% mortality when exposed to untreated EE2, while LC50 values confirmed Cu’s greater toxicity. The Ames test indicated no mutagenic effects. Integrating the Fenton-like process with complementary techniques is recommended to enhance efficiency. These findings highlight the need to optimize operational parameters for effective removal of 17α-ethinylestradiol. Full article

This study reports the synthesis, characterization, and antifungal evaluation of a series of pyridoxal and salicylaldehyde derivatives, using synthetic methodologies such as radical cyclizations and click chemistry. Compounds 6a and 6b, featuring a fused dihydrobenzoxepine-pyridine scaffold, demonstrated effective fungicidal activity with MIC values of 19 µg/mL against Cryptococcus neoformans 2807. Similarly, compound 6b exhibited notable activity with a MIC of 75 µg/mL against Candida auris PUJ-HUSI 537. Both compounds outperformed fluconazole (FLC) in these strains. In silico ADMET profiling revealed favorable pharmacokinetic properties, including blood–brain barrier penetration and drug-likeness parameters consistent with Lipinski’s rule of five. Cytotoxicity assays on human fibroblasts confirmed the low toxicity of compound 6a at the tested concentrations. These results highlight the potential of the fused dihydrobenzoxepine-pyridine scaffold as a promising antifungal candidate for further investigations. Full article

This paper explores the application of machine learning techniques and statistical analysis to identify the patterns of victimization and the risk of gender-based violence in San Andrés de Tumaco, Nariño, Colombia. Models were developed to classify women according to their vulnerability and risk of suffering various forms of violence, which were integrated into a decision-making tool for local authorities. The algorithms employed include K-means for clustering, artificial neural networks, random forests, decision trees, and multiclass classification algorithms combined with fuzzy classification techniques to handle the incomplete data. Implemented in Python and R, the models were statistically validated to ensure their reliability. Analysis based on health data revealed the key victimization patterns and risks associated with gender-based violence in the region. This study presents a data science model that uses a social determinant approach to assess the characteristics and patterns of violence against women in the Pacific region of Nariño. This research was conducted within the framework of the Orquídeas Program of the Colombian Ministry of Science, Technology, and Innovation. Full article

It is assumed that climate change (global warming) worsens the living conditions for conifers and at the same time favours the cultivation of deciduous trees, including oaks. In fact, in Poland, for example, many more oaks are now being planted as forest-forming tree species than in the 1980s and 1990s. However, the monitoring of the health status of European forests (according to the International Co-operation Project) does not confirm these optimistic assumptions, and oak has been cited as one of the most damaged tree species in terms of defoliation in recent decades. The prospects for oak cultivation in European forestry are therefore a combination of abiotic conditions and biotic damage factors. This review article focuses in particular on the new threats posed by pathogenic organisms causing emerging diseases. These include newly identified bacteria responsible for the so-called Acute Oak Decline (AOD), oomycetes (especially those specialised in damaging fine roots, such as Phytophthora quercina T.Jung) and semi-parasites of the genus Loranthus. At the same time, the pressure from commonly observed insects and fungi described in connection with the complex syndrome of oak decline, which is divided into predisposing, inciting, and contributing factors (according to Manion’s disease spiral), has not abated. Therefore, international, interdisciplinary research (such as that proposed in Oakland) is needed, using modern technologies (RS remote sensing) based on the comparison of satellite images (from different years), not only to inventory the most valuable oak stands in Europe (microrefugia) but also to identify trends in changes in their condition and biodiversity. As RS has its limitations (e.g., resolution), aerial monitoring should be complemented by quantitative and qualitative inventory from the ground, e.g., monitoring of the presence of soil microorganisms using effective molecular biological methods (e.g., Next-Generation Sequencing NGS). Recently, there has been a huge increase in the different ways to manufacture polymer-based sensors. Methods like additive manufacturing, microfluidic preparation, and brush painting are just a few examples of new approaches designed to improve sensor features like self-healing, higher sensitivity, reduced drift over time, and lower hysteresis. That being said, we believe there is still a lot of potential to boost the performance of current sensors by applying modeling, classification, and machine learning techniques. With this approach, final sensor users may benefit from inexpensive computational methods instead of dealing with the already mentioned manufacturing routes. In this study, a total of 96 specimens of two commercial brands of Force Sensing Resistors (FSRs) were characterized under the error metrics of drift and hysteresis; the characterization was performed at multiple input voltages in a tailored test bench. It was found that the output voltage at null force (Vo_null) of a given specimen is inversely correlated with its drift error, and, consequently, it is possible to predict the sensor’s performance by performing inexpensive electrical measurements on the sensor before deploying it to the final application. Hysteresis error was also studied in regard to Vo_null readings; nonetheless, a relationship between Vo_null and hysteresis was not found. However, a classification rule base on k-means clustering method was implemented; the clustering allowed us to distinguish in advance between sensors with high and low hysteresis by relying solely on Vo_null readings; the method was successfully implemented on Peratech SP200 sensors, but it could be applied to Interlink FSR402 sensors. With the aim of providing a comprehensive insight of the experimental data, the theoretical foundations of FSRs are also presented and correlated with the introduced modeling/classification techniques. Dementia increases dependence in older adults and decreases their quality of life and that of their family members. These family members often take on the responsibility of caregiving and suffer from burden and health deterioration due to facing various stressors. The aim is to verify the effectiveness of existing interventions aimed at relieving the burden and stress of informal caregivers of older people with dementia. A scoping review was conducted by consulting the Web of Science, Scopus, ProQuest, and PubMed databases, following the guidelines of the PRISMA 2020 Statement. The review protocol has been registered in PROSPERO under number CRD42024558609. Twenty-six articles met the inclusion criteria and were reviewed, studying the type of intervention design, the sample size of caregivers and their main characteristics, the duration and follow-up, and the variables investigated with their respective measurement instruments. The analysis of the different studies showed that the most developed types of interventions are psychoeducational and cognitive-behavioral therapies, both individual and group. These interventions were mainly effective in reducing the burden and depressive symptoms of caregivers. It is considered advisable to implement more randomized controlled trials for further research, because as the number of caregivers increases, so does the need for affordable and effective interventions. Flax (Linum usitatissimum L.) can be grown both as an oil crop and as a fiber crop, and this offers new opportunities when included in the framework of a whole-crop biorefinery, a system in which a range of products are made from portions of grain and straw and in which both of these should be satisfactorily produced. In the present experiment, the effect of flax genotypes (7 varieties), cultivation sites (two locations) and seasons (two years) were tested with a standard randomized complete block design, in search of a compromise for the production performance for both grain and straw, with the aim of reintroducing flax back into the northern Italian environment. Overall, grain yield reaches an average value of about 1.4 t ha−1 (dw), while straw yield reaches 2.77 t ha−1 (dw). The former is strictly dependent on the environmental effects of the growing site and season, while the effect of genotype was not significant. The straw yield also depends on the second-order interaction of the factors analyzed, although the performance of three varieties, Festival, Solal and Linoal, was noteworthy and seemed to respond well in both environments. Overall, it was found that flax can be conveniently grown for both grain and straw production. Full article

Claudins—Promising Biomarkers for Selected Gastrointestinal (GI) Malignancies?

Despite recent(最近) improvements in diagnostic ability(能力) and treatment(治疗) strategies for patients(病人) with neoplastic disease(疾病), gastrointestinal (GI) cancers(癌症), such(这样) as colorectal, gastric, pancreatic, and oesophageal cancers(癌症), are still common(常见) malignancies and the leading(领先) cause(原因) of cancer(癌症) deaths worldwide(全世界), with a high frequency of recurrence and metastasis as well as poor patient(病人) prognosis. There is a link(链接) between the secretion of proteolytic enzymes that degrade the extracellular matrix and the pathogenesis of GI tumours. Recent(最近) findings have focused(焦点) on the potential(潜在) significance(意义) of selected claudins (CLDNs) in the pathogenesis and prognosis of GI cancers(癌症). Tight junctions (TJs) have been proven to play an important role(作用) in maintaining cell(细胞) polarity and permeability. A number of authors have recently(最近) revealed that TJ proteins, particularly(特别是) selected CLDNs, are related(相关) to inflammation and the development(发展) of various tumours, including GI malignancies. This review(检讨) presents general(一般) characteristics and the involvement(参与) of selected CLDNs in the progression(进展) of GI malignancies, with a focus(焦点) on the potential(潜在) application(应用) of these proteins in the diagnosis(诊断) and prognosis of colorectal cancer(癌症) (CRC), gastric cancer(癌症) (GC), pancreatic cancer(癌症) (PC), and oesophageal cancer(癌症) (EC). Our review(检讨) indicates that selected CLDNs, particularly(特别是) CLDN1, 2, 4, 7, and 18, play a significant(显著) role(作用) in the development(发展) of GI tumours and in patient(病人) prognosis. Furthermore, selected CLDNs may be of value(价值) in the design(设计) of therapeutic(治疗) strategies for the treatment(治疗) of recurrent tumours. Full article

The following paper presents a solution to the problem of offline recognition of Japanese characters. Minutiae and other features extractable from handwriting images have been used to recognize individual characters. The solution presented by the authors uses minutiae to recognise single Japanese characters. Due to the complexity of this typeface, the solution presented can be used to recognise archaic characters, from old documents or also works of art. Neural Networks and hybrid classifiers based on five basic types of classifiers, i.e., k-nearest neighbour method, decision trees, support vector machine, logistic regression and Gaussian Naive Bayes classifier have been developed for classification. The study was conducted on Hiragana, Katakana and Kanji characters (ETL9G Database). The accuracy value obtained was 99.934%. The authors present what is probably the first algorithm using minutiae to recognize Japanese handwriting. Full article
