This study aimed to evaluate whether the addition of a phytobiotic additive formulated based on cinnamon and oregano essential oils (50% free and 50% microencapsulated) combined with turmeric extract and tannins to the diet of cows has beneficial effects on health, productivity, and milk quality. In a completely randomized design, eighteen Jersey cows were used in a compost barn system over 45 days. The cows were divided into two homogeneous groups: one control (without additive; n = 9) and another treatment (with a phytobiotic at a dose of 2 g/cow/day; n = 9). The diet was formulated based on corn silage, hay and concentrate for daily 30 L/cow production. Blood and milk samples were collected at 15-day intervals. There was a treatment × day interaction: cows that consumed the phytobiotic additive produced a more significant amount of milk at days 14, 17, 18, 30, 39 and 45 (p ≤ 0.05). When we corrected milk production for fat percentage, we observed higher milk production in the cows that consumed phytobiotics compared to the control during the experimental period (p = 0.01). The feed intake of cows fed phytobiotics was lower (p = 0.01). Thus, feed efficiency was better in cows that consumed phytogenics. There was a higher percentage of fat in the milk of cows that consumed phytobiotics and a higher amount of polyunsaturated fatty acids compared to the control (p = 0.02). There was an increase in total protein and globulin levels (p = 0.01), which may be associated with the interaction of the antimicrobial, antioxidant, and immunomodulatory properties of the phytobiotic additive. An increase in immunoglobulins (p = 0.01) and a reduction in acute-phase proteins (p ≤ 0.05) were observed in the blood of cows in the phytobiotic group. Lower levels of TNF-α, IL-1β and IL-6 and higher levels of IL-10 in the serum of cows that consumed the phytoactive (p = 0.01) reaffirm the anti-inflammatory effect of the additive. Lower levels of lipid peroxidation (TBARS) and reactive oxygen species (ROS) were observed in the serum of cows in the phytobiotic group. Greater catalase and superoxide dismutase activity was observed in cows that consumed the phytogenic (p < 0.01). Therefore, it can be concluded that the additive in question has antioxidant, immunological, and anti-inflammatory actions and has the potential to improve productive performance when corrected for milk fat. Background: Heart failure (HF) management increasingly relies on innovative solutions to enhance monitoring and care. Wearable devices, originally popularized for fitness tracking, show promise in clinical decision-making for HF. This study explores the application and potential for the broader integration of wearable technology in HF management, emphasizing remote monitoring and personalized care. Methods: A comprehensive literature review was performed to assess the role of wearables in HF management, focusing on functionalities like vital sign tracking, patient engagement, and clinical decision support. Clinical outcomes and barriers to adopting wearable technology in HF care were critically analyzed. Results: Wearable devices increasingly track physiological parameters relevant to HF, such as heart rate, physical activity, and sleep. They can identify at-risk patients, promote lifestyle changes, facilitate early diagnosis, and accurately detect arrhythmias that lead to decompensation. Additionally, wearables may assess fluid status, identifying early signs of decompensation to prevent hospitalization and supporting therapeutic adjustments. They also enhance physical activity and optimize cardiac rehabilitation programs, improving patient outcomes. Both wearable and implanted cardiac devices enable continuous, non-invasive monitoring through small devices. However, challenges like data integration, regulatory approval, and reimbursement impede their widespread adoption. Conclusions: Wearable technology can transform HF management through continuous monitoring and early interventions. Collaboration among involved parties is essential to overcome integration challenges and validate most of these devices in clinical practice. Full article

This study aimed to investigate the degradation of dry biopotential electrodes using the anodic stripping voltammetry (ASV) technique. The electrodes were based on Ti-Cu thin films deposited on different polymeric substrates (polyurethane, polylactic acid, and cellulose) by Direct Current (DC) magnetron sputtering. TiCu0.34 thin films (chemical composition of 25.4 at.% Cu and 74.6 at.% Ti) were prepared by sputtering a composite Ti target. For comparison purposes, a Cu-pure thin film was prepared under the same conditions and used as a reference. Both films exhibited dense microstructures with differences in surface topography and crystalline structure. The degradation process involved immersing TiCu0.34 and Cu-pure thin films in artificial sweat (prepared following the ISO standard 3160-2) for different durations (1 h, 4 h, 24 h, 168 h, and 240 h). ASV was the technique selected to quantify the amount of Cu(II) released by the electrodes immersed in the sweat solution. The optimal analysis conditions were set for 120 s and −1.0 V for time deposition and potential deposition, respectively, with a quantification limit of 0.050 ppm and a detection limit of 0.016 ppm. The results showed that TiCu0.34 electrodes on polyurethane substrates were significantly more reliable over time compared to Cu-pure electrodes. After 240 h of immersion, the TiCu0.34 electrodes released a maximum of 0.06 ppm Cu, while Cu-pure electrodes released 16 ppm. The results showed the significant impact of the substrate on the electrode’s longevity, with cellulose bases performing poorly. TiCu0.34 thin films on cellulose released 1.15 µg/cm2 of copper after 240 h, compared to 1.12 mg/cm2 from Cu-pure films deposited on the same substrate. Optical microscopy revealed that electrodes based on polylactic acid substrates were more prone to corrosion over time, whereas TiCu thin-film metallic glass-like structures on PU substrates showed extended lifespan. This study underscored the importance of assessing the degradation of dry biopotential electrodes for e-health applications, contributing to developing more durable and reliable sensing devices. While the study simulated real-world conditions using artificial sweat, it did not involve in vivo measurements. Full article

Background: Violence against health professionals is a global and growing problem, with significant impacts on the quality of care and the mental health of workers. Objectives: To analyze the level of knowledge, reporting practices and consequences of violence against health professionals in the Alentejo region (southern Portugal). Methods: This was an observational, cross-sectional study involving 440 health professionals (doctors and nurses). Data were collected using an online platform and a structured questionnaire created specifically for this study. In the statistical analysis, the data were described as counts and proportions and the X2 test was used considering a significance level of 0.05. Results: This study reveals that violence against health professionals in the southern region of Portugal is a frequent problem (40%), with a higher incidence among nurses (80%). Despite awareness of the existence and functioning of reporting channels, reporting is low (52%). The main causes are related to the health system, professionals and users. The consequences include mental health problems and a reduction in the quality of care provided. Suggested measures to combat violence include improving security, training and punishing aggressors. Conclusions: This study reveals that violence against health professionals in the southern region of Portugal is a frequent, under-reported problem with serious consequences for professionals and the quality of care. New iron and cobalt bis(dithiolene) complexes [M(3cbdt)2] (3cbdt = 3-cyanobenzene-1,2-dithiolate) were prepared as tetraphenylphosphonium (Ph4P+) salts for Fe in the monoanionic state and for Co in both the dianionic and monoanionic states: (Ph4P)2[Fe(III)(3cbdt)2]2 (1); (Ph4P)2[Co(III)(3cbdt)2]2 (2); (Ph4P)2[Co(II)(3cbdt)2] (3). These compounds were characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction, cyclic voltammetry, EPR, and static magnetic susceptibility. Their properties are discussed in comparison with the corresponding complexes based on the isomer ligand 4-cyanobenzene-1,2-dithiolate (4cbdt) and 4,5-cyanobenzene-1,2-dithiolate (dcbdt), previously described by us. The Fe(III) and the Co(III) compounds (1 and 2) are isostructural, crystallizing in the triclinic P1¯ space group, with cis [M(III)(3cbdt)2] complexes dimerized in a trans fashion, and the transition metal (M = Fe, Co) has a distorted 4+1 square pyramidal coordination geometry. The Co(II) compound (3) crystallizes in the triclinic P1¯ space group, with the unit cell containing one cis and three trans inequivalent [Co(II)(3cbdt)2] complexes with the transition metal (Co) and having a square planar coordination geometry. The Fe(III) complex (1) is EPR-silent, and the static magnetic susceptibility shows a temperature dependence typical of dimers of antiferromagnetically coupled S = 3/2 spins with −J/kB = 233.6 K and g = 1.8. Static magnetic susceptibility measurements of compound (3) show that this Co(II) complex is paramagnetic, corresponding to an S = ½ state with g = 2, in agreement with EPR spectra showing in solid state a hyperfine structure typical of the I(59Co) = 7/2. Static susceptibility measurements of Co(III) complex (2) showed an increase in the paramagnetic susceptibility upon warming above 100 K, which is consistent with strong AFM coupling between dimerized S = 1 units with a constant −J/kB ~1286 K. Leishmania infantum, a zoonotic vector-born parasite, is endemic in the Mediterranean region, presenting mostly as visceral (VL), but also as cutaneous (CL) and mucosal leishmaniasis (ML). This study aimed to describe the epidemiological and clinical aspects of the CL and ML cases diagnosed in mainland Portugal between 2010 and 2020. Collaboration was requested from every hospital of the Portuguese National Health System. Cases were screened through a search of diagnostic discharge codes or positive laboratory results for Leishmania infection. Simultaneously, a comprehensive literature search was performed. Descriptive statistics and hypothesis testing were performed using IBM® SPSS® Statistics. A total of 43 CL and 7 ML cases were identified, with a predominance of autochthonous cases (86%). In CL, immunosuppressed individuals constituted a significant proportion of patients (48%), and in this group, disseminated CL (22%) and simultaneous VL (54%) were common. In autochthonous cases, lesions, mostly papules/nodules (62%), were frequently observed on the head (48%). The approach to treatment was very heterogeneous. ML cases were all autochthonous, were diagnosed primarily in older immunosuppressed individuals, and were generally treated with liposomal amphotericin B. The findings suggest a need for enhanced surveillance and reporting, clinical awareness, and diagnostic capacity of these forms of leishmaniasis to mitigate underdiagnosis and improve patient outcomes. A holistic One Health approach is advocated to address the multifaceted challenges posed by leishmaniases in Portugal and beyond. Full article

In the past few years, wind power has become a viable alternative in Brazil to diversify the energy mix and mitigate pollutant emissions from fossil fuels. Significant wind energy generation potential is inherent in the Brazilian Northeast state of Rio Grande do Norte, due to prevailing strong winds along the coastline and elevated regions. However, clean and renewable wind energy may lead to potential biodiversity impacts, including the removal of native vegetation during plant construction and operation. This case study explores the flash pyrolysis-based valorization of three commonly suppressed species, namely Cenostigma pyramidale (CP), Commiphora leptophloeos (CL), and Aspidosperma pyrifolium (AP), in a wind farm situated within the Mato Grande region of Rio Grande do Norte State. The study centers on determining their bioenergy-related properties and assessing their potential for producing phenolic-rich bio-oil. The investigation of three wood residues as potential sources of high-value chemicals, specifically phenolic compounds, was conducted using a micro-furnace type temperature programmable pyrolyzer combined with gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (Py–GC/MS setup). The range of higher heating values observed for three wood residues was 17.5–18.4 MJ kg−1, with the highest value attributed to AP wood residue. The bulk density ranged from 126.5 to 268.7 kg m−3, while ash content, volatile matter content, fixed carbon content, and lignin content were within the respective ranges of 0.8–2.9 wt.%, 78.5–89.6 wt.%, 2.6–9.5 wt.%, and 19.1–30.6 wt.%. Although the energy-related properties signifying the potential value of three wood residues as energy resources are evident, their applicability in the bioenergy sector can be expanded via pelleting or briquetting. Yields of phenolic compounds exceeding 40% from the volatile pyrolysis products of CL and AP wood residues at 500 °C make them favorable for phenolic-rich bio-oil production. The findings of this study endorse the utilization of wood residues resulting from vegetation suppression during the installation of wind energy plants as potential feedstocks for producing bioenergy and sustainable phenolic compounds. This presents a solution for addressing a regional environmental concern following the principles of green chemistry. Full article

The Volunteer Functions Inventory (VFI) is an instrument widely used to assess volunteers’ motivation based on the Functionalist Model of Omoto and Snyder. It assesses six factors that reflect several motivational functions. The VFI has been translated into various languages and validated in different cultural contexts, but some studies have reported different factor structures (e.g., five or four factors). In the Portuguese context, previous studies have also shown inconsistent results. The aim of this study was to adapt and validate the VFI for Portuguese volunteers, testing several alternative models (nine models) using confirmatory factor analysis. The sample comprised 468 volunteers (76.3% women), aged from 13 to 81 years (M = 36.66, SD = 14.93). The results support the original interrelated six-factor model as the best-fitting one. The VFI showed good internal consistency and convergent validity. Significant correlations were found between the VFI factors, organizational commitment, and volunteers’ satisfaction. Overall, the six-factor VFI is a valid and reliable tool for measuring the motivational functions of Portuguese volunteers, with implications for practice and research in the volunteering field. (1) Background: Species of the genus Cymbopogon and its essential oil are known for their antioxidant and hypoglycemic effects. This study aimed to investigate the impact of the essential oil of Cymbopogon flexuosus (EOCF), and its major component, citral, on glycemic, lipid, antioxidant parameters, and oxidative stress in a type 1 diabetes (DM1) rat model. (2) Methods: Initially, EOCF was analyzed by Gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) and the antioxidant activity of EOCF and citral was evaluated. Next, male Wistar rats (3 months old, 200–250 g) induced with DM1 using Streptozotocin (STZ) were divided into four groups: negative control supplemented with an 80% Tween solution, two groups of animals supplemented with EOCF (32 mg/kg and 64 mg/kg) and with citral (32 mg/kg), and treated for 14 days. Measurements of blood glucose levels and body weight were taken; after euthanasia, biochemical markers, including lipid profile, uric acid, alanine aminotransferase (ALT), and aspartate aminotransferase (AST), were evaluated. (3) Results: The predominant compounds in EOCF were α-citral (53.21%) and neral (19.42%), constituting 72.63% citral. EOCF showed good antioxidant activity, significantly greater than citral. EOCF supplementation demonstrated a mitigating effect on glycemic, lipid, and hepatic abnormalities induced by DM1. (4) Conclusions: EOCF emerges as a promising therapeutic option for the management of DM1. Full article

This study evaluates the activity of a recombinant chitinase from the leaf-cutting ant Atta sexdens (AsChtII-C4B1) against colloidal and solid α- and β-chitin substrates. 1H NMR analyses of the reaction media showed the formation of N-acetylglucosamine (GlcNAc) as the hydrolysis product. Viscometry analyses revealed a reduction in the viscosity of chitin solutions, indicating that the enzyme decreases their molecular masses. Both solid state 13C NMR and XRD analyses showed minor differences in chitin crystallinity pre- and post-reaction, indicative of partial hydrolysis under the studied conditions, resulting in the formation of GlcNAc and a reduction in molecular mass. However, the enzyme was unable to completely degrade the chitin samples, as they retained most of their solid-state structure. It was also observed that the enzyme acts progressively and with a greater activity on α-chitin than on β-chitin. AsChtII-C4B1 significantly changed the hyphae of the phytopathogenic fungus Lasiodiplodia theobromae, hindering its growth in both solid and liquid media and reducing its dry biomass by approximately 61%. The results demonstrate that AsChtII-C4B1 could be applied as an agent for the bioproduction of chitin derivatives and as a potential antifungal agent. Full article

Medication adherence is essential for managing chronic diseases and achieving optimal health outcomes. However, this process is often challenging, particularly for patients with complex care needs. Informal caregivers play a pivotal role in supporting medication management, but they may face resource limitations and a lack of necessary support. Digital health tools offer a promising avenue to enhance medication adherence by providing reminders, education, and remote monitoring capabilities. This scoping review aimed to identify and evaluate digital solutions available to informal caregivers for improving medication adherence. A systematic search of PubMed and Web of Science was conducted using relevant keywords. Four studies were included in the review, examining a variety of digital tools including mobile apps, SMS messaging, and wearable devices. These tools demonstrated efficacy in improving medication adherence, managing disease symptoms, and enhancing quality of life for patients and caregivers. Digital health interventions hold the potential to revolutionize medication adherence among chronic disease patients. By empowering informal caregivers, these tools can bridge the gaps in medication management and contribute to better health outcomes. Further research is warranted to optimize the design, implementation, and evaluation of digital interventions for medication adherence. Full article

This study aims to evaluate the lifespan of Ti-Ag dry electrodes prepared using flexible polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) substrates. Following previous studies, the electrodes were designed to be integrated into wearables for remote electromyography (EMG) monitoring and electrical stimulation (FES) therapy. Four types of Ti-Ag electrodes were prepared by DC magnetron sputtering, using a pure-Ti target doped with a growing number of Ag pellets. After extensive characterization of their chemical composition and (micro)structural evolution, the Ti-Ag electrodes were immersed in an artificial sweat solution (standard ISO-3160-2) at 37 °C with constant stirring. Results revealed that all the Ti-Ag electrodes maintained their integrity and functionality for 24 h. Although there was a notable increase in electrical resistivity beyond this timeframe, the acquisition and transmission of (bio)signals remained viable for electrodes with Ag/Ti ratios below 0.23. However, electrodes with higher Ag content (Ag/Ti = 0.31) became insulators after 7 days of immersion due to excessive Ag release into the sweat solution. This study concludes that higher Ag/Ti atomic ratios result in heightened corrosion processes on the electrode’s surface, consequently diminishing their lifespan despite the advantages of incorporating Ag into their composition. This research highlights the critical importance of evaluating electrode longevity, especially in remote biomedical applications like smart wearables, where electrode performance over time is crucial for reliable and sustained monitoring and stimulation. The purpose of this study was to analyze midwifery practice in the Mazahua and Otomi (MO) indigenous community and its relationship with the persistence of the native language and the use of medicinal plants. A semi-structured survey with qualitative and quantitative information was designed and validated. Data were collected from the students enrolled in the Intercultural Health Degree at the Intercultural University of the State of Mexico, their parents, their grandparents, and people from their community of the MO ethnic group. The variables mother tongue and births attended by midwives among both MO and non-indigenous people were correlated with three generations (grandparents, parents, and grandchildren). In the MO indigenous group, births attended by midwives and mother tongue concerning the three generations were lost in proportions of 25.5% and 17.05%, respectively. There are 23% more midwife-attended births in the MO community than among non-ethnic people. The medicinal plants most used by the MO indigenous group are “too” (Montanoa tomentosa Cerv.) and “lengua de vaca” (Rumex crispus L.). As regards family economy, 79.3% of the adults surveyed consider that there is a saving of between 25% and 75% with midwifery practice in the MO community. There is a generational correspondence between the loss of native language and midwifery practice. Full article

This paper explores the implementation of the circular economy in the energy sector. The research findings contribute to our understanding of the practical application of the circular economy, enabling policymakers and stakeholders to make informed decisions and develop targeted strategies. The study analyzes 88 Portuguese companies’ reports, examining the presence of circular economy strategies and initiatives. The results reveal that energy sector companies tend to prioritize reporting their greenhouse gas reduction efforts over their circular economy strategies. The findings align with previous studies in the oil and gas industry, emphasizing the significance of sustainability reporting and potential biases in reporting practices. The study also identifies a gap between circular economy terminology and its representation in reports, indicating the need for greater incorporation of circular economy-oriented initiatives in the energy sector. The research highlights the role of technology in fostering innovation and calls for strategic alliances and knowledge sharing to drive circular economy practices. Further research is recommended to understand the barriers to implementing circular economy practices and identify effective solutions. Overall, this paper provides valuable insights for advancing the circular economy in the energy sector and achieving broader sustainability goals. Full article

RNA(i) interference is a gene silencing mechanism triggered by double-stranded (ds)RNA, which promises to contribute to species-specific insect pest control strategies. The first step toward the application of RNAi as an insecticide is to enable efficient gene silencing upon dsRNA oral delivery. The desert locust, Schistocerca gregaria is a devastating agricultural pest. While this species is responsive to dsRNA delivered by intra-hemocoelic injection, it is refractory to orally delivered dsRNA. In this study, we evaluated the capacity of five cell-penetrating peptides (CPPs) to bind long dsRNA and protect it from the locust midgut environment. We then selected the CPP EB1 for further in vivo studies. EB1:dsRNA complexes failed to induce RNAi by feeding. Interestingly, we observed that intra-hemocoelic injection of small-interfering (si)RNAs does not result in a silencing response, but that this response can be obtained by injecting EB1:siRNA complexes. EB1 also protected siRNAs from midgut degradation activity. However, EB1:siRNA complexes failed as well in triggering RNAi when fed. Our findings highlight the complexity of the dsRNA/siRNA-triggered RNAi in this species and emphasize the multifactorial nature of the RNAi response in insects. Our study also stresses the importance of in vivo studies when it comes to dsRNA/siRNA delivery systems. Full article
