Periodontal Health Knowledge of Schoolteachers: A Cross-Sectional Study

Background/Objectives: Schoolteachers play a central role in shaping their students’ beliefs and attitudes towards oral health. Our aim was to investigate the oral and periodontal health knowledge of schoolteachers in Riyadh and factors affecting this knowledge. Methods: Government schoolteachers from representative areas of Riyadh (n = 895) responded to a structured questionnaire. Descriptive statistics, t-tests, one-way analysis of variance, and multiple linear regression (p ≤ 0.05). Results: Teachers demonstrated good basic oral/periodontal health knowledge (mean score = 60.21 ± 10.68). Most knew that toothbrushing is necessary to preserve dental (78.66%) and periodontal (57.88%) health; that gingival bleeding (74.41%), swelling (64.25%), and abscess formation (52.96%) are signs of periodontal disease; about 63% identified dental biofilm as an etiologic factor, and 58% knew that periodontitis may cause gingival recession and influence systemic health (74.07%). However, only 38% knew that dental flossing is necessary to preserve periodontal health, and 66.03% believed that gingival health can be restored with a special toothpaste. Teachers who were female, older in age, worked in north Riyadh, and taught the intermediate stage demonstrated statistically significantly better knowledge than the other categories. Conclusions: The studied sample of schoolteachers possesses acceptable basic oral health knowledge but has inadequate knowledge of periodontal health. Factors influencing teachers’ knowledge were age, gender, region of work, and teaching stage. Full article

Traditional color vision tests lack the sensitivity to detect subtle differences in individuals with normal color vision. The Konan ColorDx Cone Contrast Threshold (CCT) HD test allows the quantitative measurement of color discrimination thresholds for each cone type. This cross-sectional study established normative values for L-, M-, and S-cone contrast sensitivities and evaluated the effects of age and sex on color discrimination thresholds. Participants aged 15–79 years with normal color vision were included (n = 216; 55% female). CCTs were measured monocularly using the Konan ColorDx CCT HD test under standardized conditions, and the influences of age and sex on L-, M-, and S-cone sensitivities were evaluated. In all groups, L-cone sensitivity was the highest, followed by the M- and S-cone sensitivities. Overall contrast sensitivity was significantly higher in females than in males (mean difference = −0.041), especially for adolescents and young adults (20–24 years). Young adults outperformed middle-aged and older adults, with age-related decline most pronounced for S-cone sensitivity in those over 60. The right and left eye sensitivities did not differ. This study provides age- and sex-stratified normative data for the Konan Color Dx CCT HD test, supporting its use for clinical and occupational assessments. Full article

Phishing attacks continue to pose serious challenges to cybersecurity, with attackers constantly refining their methods to bypass detection systems. One particularly evasive technique is Zero-Font phishing, which involves the insertion of invisible or zero-sized characters into email content to deceive both users and traditional email filters. Because these characters are not visible to human readers but still processed by email systems, they can be used to evade detection by traditional email filters, obscuring malicious intent in ways that bypass basic content inspection. This study introduces a proactive phishing detection tool capable of identifying both traditional and Zero-Font phishing attempts. The proposed tool leverages a multi-layered security framework, combining structural inspection and machine learning-based classification to detect both traditional and Zero-Font phishing attempts. At its core, the system incorporates an advanced machine learning model trained on a well-established dataset comprising both phishing and legitimate emails. The model alone achieves an accuracy rate of up to 98.8%, contributing significantly to the overall effectiveness of the tool. This hybrid approach enhances the system’s robustness and detection accuracy across diverse phishing scenarios. The findings underscore the importance of multi-faceted detection mechanisms and contribute to the development of more resilient defenses in the ever-evolving landscape of cybersecurity threats. Background/Objectives: Non-communicable diseases (NCDs) are strongly linked to beverage consumption. This study aimed to assess the average daily beverage intake of Saudi residents, energy intake from beverages, and the influence of socio-demographic factors, health behaviors, and health status on beverage intake. Methods: A nationally representative, cross-sectional study utilized stratified quota sampling to survey adults (≥18 years) across all 13 administrative regions of Saudi Arabia. Data were collected from April 2022 to December 2023 using the validated Arabic Beverage Frequency Questionnaire (ABFQ), assessing consumption patterns of 28 beverage types. Results: The study included 4385 participants (mean age: 36.1 ± 11.14 years, 65% male). Sweetened tea (28 mL/day), regular soft drinks (22.1 mL/day), and Saudi coffee (18 mL/day) were the most frequent beverages after water. Sweetened tea contributed to the highest average energy intake (33.2 ± 46.4 kcal/day). Consumption of sugar-sweetened beverages (SSBs) was higher among younger individuals (18–29 years: OR: 4.0, 95% CI [2.6–6.3]; 30–44 years: OR: 2.8, 95% CI [1.8–4.3]), males (OR:1.6, 95% CI [1.4–1.8]), and residents of specific regions [Al-Jawf (OR: 1.9, 95% CI [1.2–3.2]) and Jazan (OR: 3.2, 95% CI [2.2–4.7])]. Higher water intakes were associated with males (OR: 1.5, 95% CI [1.3–1.7]), higher education levels (OR: 1.4, 95% CI [1.2–1.8]), physically active (OR: 1.5, 95% CI [1.3–1.8]), and those overweight (OR: 1.6, 95% CI [1.2–2.3]) or obese (OR: 2, 95% CI [1.4–2.8]). Conclusions: This study provides a valuable insight into beverage consumption patterns among Saudi residents. The findings highlight the need for targeted public health interventions to promote healthier beverage choices, particularly among younger populations and those with lower socioeconomic status. Background: There are very few studies in literature concerning the bonding between 3D-printed resin posts and the core build-up material. This study aimed to evaluate and compare the adhesion of 3D-printed and milled resin posts to composite resin core build-up material following different surface treatments. Methods: Three types of resin posts were utilized in this study: ready-made glass-reinforced fiber post (3M ESPE, Germany), milled PEEK POST (Bredent, Germany), and 3D-printed resin post (CROWNTEC, Saremco Dental AG, Switzerland). Each type of post was categorized into three groups based on surface treatments: C: untreated surfaces; SB: Air abrasion with 50 μm aluminum oxide particles was applied to the posts’ surfaces.; HO: the posts’ surfaces were immersed in 30% H2O2 for 5 min. A dual-cured composite resin (Grandio DC; VOCO) was utilized for core build-up in each group to evaluate adhesion through the push-out bond strength test. The modes of failure were analyzed, and the surface morphology of the post was characterized using SEM. Data were analyzed using a two-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) along with Tukey’s test. Results: The two-way ANOVA indicated a significant effect for surface treatment (F = 583.54, p < 001), post type (F = 79.96, p < 0.001), and their interactions (F = 265.74, p < 0.001). Regarding 3D-printed resin post, 30% H2O2 for 5 min recorded the highest statistically significant bond strength value (13.11 ± 1.61) compared to other groups. Regarding the milled PEEK post, the air particle abrasion recorded the highest statistically significant value (23.88 ± 1.66) compared to other groups. Adhesive failure was the predominant failure type, with an occurrence rate of 70.35%. Mixed failure was noted in 24.07% of the cases, with a significant prevalence in the PEEK post within the air particle abrasion group (58.3%). Cohesive failure was noted in 5.54% of cases, with a significant prevalence in the air particle abrasion group, occurring at rates of 16.6% in the resin fiber post group and 33.3% in PEEK posts. Conclusions: Air particle abrasion significantly improved the push-out bond strength of milled PEEK posts, but it did not have a similar effect on the 3D-printed resin posts. The application of 30% H2O2 for 5 min to 3D-printed resin post enhanced the adhesion to core build-up material. The manufacturing method of posts, the surface treatments utilized, and their interactions affect the interfacial bond strength between posts and the composite resin core build-up material. This research investigates the effect of board characteristics on environmental, social, and governance (ESG) disclosure among firms listed on the Saudi Stock Exchange (Tadawul) from 2021 to 2023. Motivated by the global shift toward sustainable development and the Saudi Vision 2030 agenda, this study examines how board size, gender diversity, independence, expertise, and compensation impact ESG disclosure practices. Drawing on stakeholder and agency theories, the regression model uses a sample of 78 Saudi-listed companies. ESG disclosure is measured using a content analysis-based checklist that conforms to international and Saudi ESG reporting frameworks. The findings indicate that background and skills, female representation, and compensation positively correlate with ESG disclosure. Conversely, board size and independence do not show significant relationships. The results highlight the pivotal role of board composition in emphasizing business practices for sustainability in emerging markets, particularly within the unique institutional setting of Saudi Arabia. The study contributes to the growing body of ESG literature by offering factual proof from an under-researched context and practical ramifications for investors, legislators, and business executives, as well as seeking to enhance transparency and accountability through effective board governance. Background: This study evaluated and compared the effects of thermal aging on the color stability and mechanical properties of CAD/CAM polymers utilized for provisional restorations. Material and Methods: Three CAD/CAM polymers in this study: CAD-Temp (CAT), Everest C-Temp (CT), and PEEK (PK). Forty specimens of each material were randomly assigned to two subgroups. Subgroup A was immersed in distilled water for 24 h, whereas Subgroup B was subjected to 5000 thermal cycles. The color stability, flexural strength (FS), survival probability, and microstructures were evaluated following thermal cycling. Data analysis was conducted utilizing two-way ANOVA along with Tukey’s test. Results: The CAT (3.74 ± 0.39) and CT (3.51 ± 0.54) groups exhibited the highest color variations, while PEEK (2.95 ± 0.45) showed the lowest color change. The baseline groups showed that the CT group had the highest flexural strength value (p < 0.05). The flexural strength values of CAT and CT groups significantly decreased (p < 0.05) following thermal cycling. No significant decrease in FS was observed following thermal cycling in the Pk group (p = 0.16). Conclusions: The color measurement and flexural strength outcomes were significantly influenced by CAD/CAM materials and thermal cycling. The CT group demonstrated superior flexural strength compared to the other groups, both before and after thermal cycling. The PK group shows the lowest color change compared to other groups. Regardless of aging condition, C-Temp and PEEK materials recorded the highest survival probability, a 95% significance level compared to CAD-Temp. Full article

Colon cancer remains a significant global health challenge, with inflammatory pathways such as TNF-α playing a central role in its progression. TNF-α, a key proinflammatory cytokine, is implicated in various stages of colon cancer development, including inflammation, tumor growth, and metastasis. This review provides a comprehensive overview of the molecular mechanisms through which TNF-α contributes to colon cancer progression, with a focus on its interaction with signaling pathways like NF-κB and the Wnt/β-catenin in humans. TNF-α’s involvement in promoting tumorigenesis and its complex role in the tumor microenvironment highlight its potential as both a therapeutic target and a challenge for effective treatment. This review explores the potential of anti-TNF-α therapies and the emerging role of combination strategies with immune checkpoint inhibitors. Despite promising preclinical findings, clinical application faces challenges due to the dual role of TNF-α in both promoting and inhibiting tumor progression. Future research should aim to overcome resistance mechanisms, develop personalized therapeutic strategies, and balance the effects of TNF-α in cancer therapy. Full article

Bacterial chondronecrosis with osteomyelitis (BCO) is a major cause of lameness in broiler chickens. This condition arises when bacteria from the gastrointestinal or aerosol tract migrate to infect bone microfractures, often exacerbated by rapid growth, reduced blood flow, and mechanical stress. As concerns about antibiotic resistance grow, probiotics have gained attention for their potential to improve gut health and reduce systemic bacterial load. This study evaluated the efficacy of a probiotic program comprising an Enterococcus faecium-based spray (2 × 109 CFU/bird at hatch) and a triple-strain Bacillus-based feed additive (B. subtilis 597, B. subtilis 600, and B. amyloliquefaciens 516 at 500 g/t feed from day 1 to 56), applied individually or in combination. A wire-flooring challenge model was used to simulate BCO transmission. A total of 1560 Cobb 500 broilers were randomly assigned to five groups: T1 (positive control), T2 (negative control), T3 (E. faecium spray only), T4 (Bacillus feed supplement only), and T5 (combined treatment). Lameness was evaluated daily from day 21 to 56 through clinical observation and necropsy. The challenge model was validated with >70% lameness in T1. All probiotic treatments significantly reduced lameness compared to T2 (p < 0.05): 35.4% in T3, 36.7% in T4, and 47.6% in T5. The combined treatment resulted in the statistically highest reduction in lameness incidence, indicating a synergistic rather than merely additive effect compared to individual treatments. These findings support the use of targeted probiotic strategies to reduce BCO lameness and enhance skeletal health and welfare in broilers. Full article

Traditional key derivation techniques, including the widely adopted PBKDF2, operate with static parameters that do not account for contextual factors such as device capabilities, data sensitivity, or password strength. In this paper, we propose a novel adaptive PBKDF2-based encryption scheme that adjusts its iteration count dynamically based on computational resource index (CRI), data risk level (DRL), and password strength assessment. We present the theoretical model, algorithmic design, and empirical validation of our approach through nine comprehensive experiments, covering performance, scalability, brute-force resistance, entropy quality, and cross-platform consistency. Our results confirm that the adaptive method achieves a secure balance between computational cost and cryptographic strength, outperforming static PBKDF2 in dynamic scenarios. Our framework enhances cryptographic resilience in real-world deployments and offers a forward-compatible foundation for adaptive security solutions. Full article

Organic dyes are pollutants that threaten aquatic life and human health. These dyes are used in various industries; therefore, recent research focuses on the problem of their removal from wastewater. The aim of this study is to examine the clay/gum arabic nanocomposite (CG/NC) as an adsorbent to adsorb methylene blue (MB) and crystal violet (CV) dyes from synthetic wastewater. The CG/NC was characterized using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and Brunaure–Emmett–Teller (BET). The effect of parameters that may influence the efficiency of removing MB and CV dyes was studied (dosage of CG/NC, contact time, pH values, initial concentration, and temperature), and the optimal conditions for removal were determined. Furthermore, an artificial neural network (ANN) model was adopted in this study. The results indicated that the adsorption behavior adhered to the Langmuir model and conformed to pseudo-second-order kinetics. The results also indicated that the removal efficiency reached 99%, and qmax reached 66.7 mg/g and 52.9 mg/g for MB and CV, respectively. Results also proved that CG/NC can be reused up to four times with high efficiency. The ANN models proved effective in predicting the process of the removal, with low mean squared errors (MSE = 1.824 and 1.001) and high correlation coefficients (R2 = 0.945 and 0.952) for the MB and CV dyes, respectively. Understanding of Stroke Risk Among Smokers in Saudi Arabia

Background and Objectives: Stroke is a common and fatal condition impacting millions worldwide. Understanding the risk factors, symptoms, and consequences at an earlier stage, specifically in highly at-risk populations such as smokers, is crucial for mitigating the stroke burden. Materials and Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted in Saudi Arabia on more than 1000 smokers. The survey was randomly shared across the kingdom. Multiple logistic regression models were applied to assess the association and find the variables associated with poor stroke awareness. Results: The study included 1029 smokers, with 88% (904) being male. The majority (61%; 630) are between the ages of 18 and 30 years, with a university degree (84%, 862). Cigarettes (33.9%; 349), shisha (25.9%; 267), and e-cigarettes (40.1%; 413) were the most common smoking types. About 30% of smokers have never heard of stroke, and 44% were unaware that stopping smoking can prevent stroke. Smokers (55%) perceive smoking as the top risk factor, followed by heart disease (41%), and high blood pressure (40.8%), while 26% of the smokers did not identify any risk factors. Around 58% of the smokers did not identify any stroke symptoms. Only 20% of smokers were capable of identifying 50% of both stroke risk factors and symptoms. Around 8% reported all stroke-related consequences, whereas 44% were unable to identify any. Current smokers were more likely than ex-smokers to identify ≥1 stroke risk factor (OR = 1.95, p = 0.001), with no significant associations found for other variables. Males, university degrees, and current smokers were the only significant predictors for the identification of ≥1 stroke symptom. University education, current smokers, employment, and smoking types were significant predictors in identifying ≥1 stroke consequence. Compared to E-cigarette users, cigarette smokers exhibited twice the awareness of stroke consequences (OR = 2.01, p = 0.001), whereas shisha smokers demonstrated lower awareness (OR = 0.63, p = 0.01). Conclusions: Smokers’ awareness of stroke in Saudi Arabia is suboptimal. Targeted educational and smoking cessation initiatives are essential to address this gap and mitigate the impact of smoking-related strokes in Saudi Arabia. Full article

Novel dentin bonding pretreatment using copper sulfate (CuSO4) and dipotassium hydrogen phosphate (K2HPO4) may create a more hydrophobic environment for dentin bonding. Thus, this study aims to investigate the impact of a CuSO4 + K2HPO4 pretreatment on dentin μTBS when bonded with a universal adhesive to conventional and CAD/CAM resin composites. Eighty recently extracted human molars (n = 80) were chosen and placed in transparent acrylic blocks to expose the crowns entirely. Nano-filled resin composite and CAD/CAM resin blocks were selected. Based on the dentin pretreatment, type of resin composite, and adhesion strategy, the teeth were randomly allocated into eight equal groups (n = 10). The microtensile bond strength (μTBS) and fracture mode were determined. A three-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) was used to analyze the μTBS data, followed by Tukey’s post hoc test. The μTBS values were not significantly affected by either the resin composite type (p > 0.05) or the adhesive strategy (p > 0.05) according to the three-way ANOVA results. Conversely, significant differences were detected between no dentin pretreatment (24.20 ± 4.54 MPa) and CuSO4 + K2HPO4 pretreatment (33.66 ± 5.22 MPa) using an etch-and-rinse adhesive strategy for nano-filled composites (p < 0.001). Additionally, significant differences were detected between no dentin pretreatment (24.71 ± 4.33 MPa) and CuSO4 + K2HPO4 pretreatment (32.49 ± 4.92 MPa) using an etch-and-rinse adhesive strategy for CAD/CAM resin blocks (p < 0.001). Moreover, significant differences were detected between no dentin pretreatment (21.20 ± 3.40 MPa) and CuSO4 + K2HPO4 pretreatment (30.31 ± 3.87 MPa) using a self-etching adhesive strategy for nano-filled composites (p < 0.001). Also, significant differences were detected between no dentin pretreatment (23.89 ± 3.89 MPa) and CuSO4 + K2HPO4 pretreatment (31.22 ± 4.71 MPa) using a self-etching adhesive strategy for CAD/CAM resin blocks (p < 0.001). In conclusion, dentin μTBS was enhanced by a copper-based treatment when used with nano-filled and CAD/CAM resin blocks. Full article

Wireless Local Area Networks (WLANs), particularly Wi-Fi, serve as the backbone of modern connectivity, supporting billions of devices globally and forming a critical component in Internet of Things (IoT) ecosystems. However, the increasing ubiquity of WLANs also presents an expanding attack surface for adversaries—especially Advanced Persistent Threats (APTs), which operate with high levels of sophistication, resources, and long-term strategic objectives. This paper provides a holistic security analysis of WLANs under the lens of APT threat models, categorizing APT actors by capability tiers and examining their ability to compromise WLANs through logical attack surfaces. The study identifies and explores three primary attack surfaces: Radio Access Control interfaces, compromised insider nodes, and ISP gateway-level exposures. A series of empirical experiments—ranging from traffic analysis of ISP-controlled routers to offline password attack modeling—evaluate the current resilience of WLANs and highlight specific vulnerabilities such as credential reuse, firmware-based leakage, and protocol downgrade attacks. Furthermore, the paper demonstrates how APT resources significantly accelerate attacks through formal models of computational scaling. It also incorporates threat modeling frameworks, including STRIDE and MITRE ATT&CK, to contextualize risks and map adversary tactics. Based on these insights, this paper offers practical recommendations for enhancing WLAN resilience through improved authentication mechanisms, network segmentation, AI-based anomaly detection, and open firmware adoption. The findings underscore that while current WLAN implementations offer basic protections, they remain highly susceptible to well-resourced adversaries, necessitating a shift toward more robust, context-aware security architectures. Background: Measuring contrast sensitivity for each of the three cone types separately allows for a more precise and clinically valuable assessment of color vision. This study examined how pupil size affects cone contrast sensitivity (CCS). Methods: This study included 50 participants of equal gender. The mean age was 20.88 (±1.8) years. Using the ColorDx, a Landolt C stimulus of various sizes in an adaptive screening mode, we sequentially determined contrast sensitivity for long-, medium-, and short-wavelength stimuli. Two consecutive measurements were performed on participants, one with their natural pupil size (range 4–5 mm diameter) and, subsequently, with six artificial eye pupils (1 mm to 6 mm). Results: Generally, the 1 mm pupil size caused the greatest reduction in contrast sensitivity for two of the three cones. There was no significant main effect of sex (F = 0.96, df = 1, p = 0.32) on the log cone contrast sensitivity of the L-cone. However, pupil size had a significant main effect (F = 116.1, df = 6, p < 0.001). Within each sex, the log CCS was significantly reduced as the pupil size decreased compared with the normal pupil size. Conclusions: New technologies that assess individual cone pathway functions could potentially assist in identifying early or progressive conditions that may impact color vision pathways from the retina to the brain. Standardized protocols—such as controlled retinal illumination—are critical to avoid misinterpretation. Full article
