Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

With intensification of agricultre and urban development, our surface- and groundwater are becoming more vulnerable to water- and foodborne human and animal-associated pathogen contamination, stemming from various point and non-point sources of fecal pollution that can contribute to disease outbreaks, economic losses in livestock, contamination of irrigated fresh produce, and diseases in wildlife. Earlier studies focused on a specific group of pathogens that cause diseases, such as gastroentritis. However, there is now a paradigm shift in research, focusing on many emerging pathogens and their community dynamics that cause respiratory, dermal, and toxigenic effects. Assessing the water quality by monitoring the levels of microbial indicators, such as fecal coliforms and E. coli, is a common approach for quantifying the potential pathogen loads in various water sources. However, they may not represent the most suitable indicators for predicting the presence of pathogens. Several efforts have examined transmission-exposure routes and developed mitigation strategies to reduce the load of pathogens and improve water quality to protect and their associated potential risks posed to human and animal health. Recently, the state-of-science has advanced immensely, and will continue to evolve in the years to come. Recent developments in molecular techniques including quantitative PCR, the availability of nucleic acid sequences that are informative with respect to identity, function or gene expression, and high resolution metagenomic inventories, have greatly transformed that help in identifying emerging pathogens.  Therefore, a Special Issue of Water is being launched where researches are requested to submit their research and review articles relating to the broad spectrum of “Water- and Foodborne Pathogens in Agriculture and Urban Aquatic Ecosystems”. Papers on prevalence, emerging pathogens, methods and quantitative analysis, pathogenicity, antibiotic resistance, microbial risk assessment are invited. We look forward to receiving and publishing your state-of-the-art research contributions for this issue.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Water is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2600 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.

Benefits of Publishing in a Special Issue

  • Ease of navigation: Grouping papers by topic helps scholars navigate broad scope journals more efficiently.
  • Greater discoverability: Special Issues support the reach and impact of scientific research. Articles in Special Issues are more discoverable and cited more frequently.
  • Expansion of research network: Special Issues facilitate connections among authors, fostering scientific collaborations.
  • External promotion: Articles in Special Issues are often promoted through the journal's social media, increasing their visibility.
  • e-Book format: Special Issues with more than 10 articles can be published as dedicated e-books, ensuring wide and rapid dissemination.
