Dear Colleagues,
Heavy metals have long been a concern for environmental and public health due to their toxicities to the ecosystem and human beings. Though we have become increasingly aware of the toxic effects of trace elements in recent years, and many countries have established regulations to monitor, control, or restrict the use of heavy metals, anthropogenic activities such as thermal power stations, mining, landfills, and the agricultural use of fertilizers continue to discharge significant amounts of trace elements into the environment.
In particular, with the development of industry and technology, various man-made chemicals (e.g., inorganic and organic chemicals) and materials (e.g., plastic and nano-particles) other than heavy metals are produced and released. Interactions between heavy metals and these chemicals/materials make it even more difficult to determine their mobility, bioavailability, and toxicity due to complicated chemical speciation. Meanwhile, technology-driven processes have disturbed the natural geochemical cycle of elements by influencing the pH, temperature, and nutrients in aquatic systems. Thus, it is a challenge to evaluate the risks of heavy metals in a changing environment, especially for long-term ecological risk assessments.
This Special Issue of Water brings together knowledge on the toxicities, environmental pathways, and risks of heavy metals in aquatic environments, including advances in metal biochemistry, speciation and bioavailability, trophic transfer, ecological and human health, and future research needs. Articles submitted for publication should establish connections among research findings with implications for environmental quality, ecological health, and/or human health within the context of metal pollution.
Contributions to all aspects of metal research are welcome, including:
- Environmental toxicology and chemistry of heavy metals;
- Advances in techniques of assessing metal toxicities;
- Biogeochemical processes of heavy metals in aquatic systems;
- Metal cycling in the nexus of climate change;
- Metal bioaccumulation and biomagnification;
- Exposure and risk assessment of heavy metals in aquatic environments;
- Remediation of metal-polluted sites using advanced technologies;
- Case studies on metal emissions and source apportionment;
- Case studies on public and environmental health regarding metal contamination.
