Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

This Special Issue aims to bring together high-quality research and review contributions that advance the understanding of geochemical and hydro-thermo-geomechanical processes in porous media, with particular emphasis on their roles in aquifer management, subsurface water resources, and other related subsurface storage systems. The objective is to promote integrated approaches that couple geochemistry, hydrodynamics, geomechanics, thermal processes, and reactive transport to improve the characterization, management, and sustainability of subsurface storage systems.

Topics of interest include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Geochemical processes governing mineral dissolution, precipitation, scaling, and adsorption/desorption in in aquifers, groundwater reservoirs, and engineered subsurface systems;
  • Reactive transport modeling of chemical species in porous media for predicting water–rock interactions and the long-term evolution of groundwater chemistry and flow dynamics;
  • Coupled geochemical–hydrological–geomechanical modeling for evaluating subsurface deformation, permeability evolution, brine migration, and aquifer integrity;
  • Geochemical controls on contaminant mobility, salinity variations, and the design and performance of reactive barriers in subsurface systems;
  • Scale formation, inhibitor retention, and chemical treatment optimization in water-bearing formations and engineered porous media;
  • Geochemical and geomechanical aspects of managed aquifer recharge (MAR), geothermal systems, and subsurface energy or hydrogen storage;
  • Solid and colloidal transport, particle–fluid interactions, and their coupling with geochemical and mechanical processes in porous media and subsurface aquifers;
  • Isotopic and geochemical tracing for process identification, reservoir characterization, and long-term water chemistry monitoring;
  • Data-driven, AI/ML, and numerical frameworks for integrating geochemical, hydrological, and geomechanical insights into aquifer management and monitoring;
  • Laboratory and field-scale investigations linking pore-scale mechanisms to reservoir-scale geochemical, thermal, and mechanical behavior;
  • Multiphase flow and reactive interfaces in heterogeneous or deformable formations.

For this Special Issue, we welcome original research articles, comprehensive reviews, short communications, and case studies that provide innovative scientific or applied perspectives on the geochemistry, hydro-thermo-mechanical processes, and reservoir management within subsurface water and energy systems, contributing to the sustainable production, protection, and restoration of groundwater and subsurface resources.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Water is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2600 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.

Benefits of Publishing in a Special Issue

  • Ease of navigation: Grouping papers by topic helps scholars navigate broad scope journals more efficiently.
  • Greater discoverability: Special Issues support the reach and impact of scientific research. Articles in Special Issues are more discoverable and cited more frequently.
  • Expansion of research network: Special Issues facilitate connections among authors, fostering scientific collaborations.
  • External promotion: Articles in Special Issues are often promoted through the journal's social media, increasing their visibility.
  • Reprint: MDPI Books provides the opportunity to republish successful Special Issues in book format, both online and in print.
