Dear Colleagues,
Emerging pollutants are newly occurring pollutants that show biological toxicity, environmental persistence, and bio-accumulation, typically including persistent organic pollutants, endocrine disruptors, antibiotics, and microplastics. While estimation of the extent of environmental and food pollution of emerging pollutants in various regions and geographic locations are continuously occurring, information about their daily exposure levels in human populations is becoming increasingly significant; meanwhile, investigation into the full spectrum of toxic effects of emerging pollutants is important to bridge the gap between exposure and toxicity, leading to health risk assessments and appropriate toxic substance management.
In regard to toxicity testing, there are multiple challenges faced by investigators, such as the difficulty extrapolating test results from animals to humans, high doses to low exposure levels, and single-compound-based experiments to combined-effects experiments. Therefore, the use of new experimental models that support combined exposure to interactively acting chemicals is encouraged. In the meantime, mechanistic studies that reveal the mode of action, establishment of adverse outcome pathways, application of AOP in rapid toxicity screening, and relevant epidemiological studies are especially, but not exclusively, welcome.
In this Special Issue, original research articles, literature reviews, and short communications are all welcome.
