Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Climate change and extreme events have the potential to substantially affect the lifespan, service levels or even destroy infrastructures, such as the energy, transportation, telecommunications, buildings, marine and water management facilities. Infrastructures are the backbone for the smooth operation of modern societies; their partial unavailability or complete destruction may result in significant impacts to people, environment, and society as well as devastating economic losses. In addition, infrastructures are inherently interconnected and interdependent systems, and thus, their failure frequently leads to domino effects.

This Special Issue aims for contributions relating to all aspects of infrastructures and climate change, such as: (a) assessment of current and dynamically evolving hazards and risks, (b) in-depth knowledge of their vulnerabilities, impacts, and potential cascading effects, also accounting for societal disruption, (c) design and financing sustainable and resilient infrastructures, (d) enhancing defenses to disasters, (e) role of infrastructures in emergency response, (f) integration of strategies for climate change mitigation and long-term adaptation options, and (g) innovative software solutions with high end visualization.

This Special Issue aims to introduce the most recent advances and emerging innovations on addressing potential risks from climate change and future extreme events pertaining to the financing, design, build, and operation of interconnected infrastructures. Such knowledge can act as a viable pathway for making resilient infrastructures. Real world applications and case studies demonstrating tangible results and stakeholder engagement are particularly welcome.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Sustainability is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.
