Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
The Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 6.1 aims to “achieve universal and equitable access to safe and affordable drinking water for all by 2030”. However, drinking water sustainability is threatened by natural disasters, climate change, lacking or failing infrastructures and socio-economic inequalities. Technological advances could allow targeted mitigation strategies, but these need to align with local and national governance mechanisms and consider social factors that can either support or undermine the sustainability of drinking water quality. This Special Issue aims to highlight research on the diverse challenges that threaten the sustainability of drinking water and lessons learnt to achieve SDG 6.1. Topics within scope include:
- Current and emerging contaminants (e.g., pathogens and antimicrobial resistance, microplastics, chemical contaminants): source protection of rural supplies, detection technologies/techniques, treatment and contaminant removal, regulatory gaps.
- Vulnerability and resilience to climate change.
- Access to safe drinking water; behavioural change approaches to support improvements in drinking water quality. Papers may wish to consider the impact of consumer behaviours and/or perception of risk.
- Social and economic impacts and responses to drinking water quality issues. Papers which consider issues of social equity/justice, well-being and social movements that respond to drinking water issues are encouraged.
- Rural supply sustainability assessment and governance indicators.
- Documentation and evaluation of approaches to drinking water governance, which may include market lead, decentralized or participatory approaches. Examples of transformative, adaptive or innovative governance arrangements are encouraged.
