Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
This Special Issue addresses the sustainable dimension of digital teaching and learning, focusing on how teachers’ digital competence can foster eco-responsible, inclusive, and pedagogically coherent educational practices.
The general approach integrates the principles of Education for Sustainability with the European perspective on digital competence. It emphasizes that digital transformation in education must be environmentally, socially, and pedagogically sustainable. To this end, it examines the inter-relationships between technological sustainability (responsible use of digital technologies), social sustainability (equity, inclusion, and participation), and pedagogical sustainability (critical and intentional integration of technologies).
The scope of this Special Issue includes theoretical and empirical studies on the intersections between Education for Sustainability and teachers’ digital competence in educational practice, teacher training, curriculum design, and institutional policies. Contributions are expected to address issues such as the ecological impact of educational technologies, equitable digital inclusion, the ethics of digital pedagogy, the incorporation of sustainable values within digital competence frameworks, etc.
The purpose of this Special Issue is to advance understanding of how digital competence can become a driving force for sustainability in education. It will offer evidence and reflections on how European teachers integrate sustainable digital practices that promote critical thinking, social responsibility, and environmental awareness.
This Special Issue expands existing scholarship by bridging two domains that, although traditionally developed in parallel, share a common transformative purpose. By positioning sustainability as a transversal and essential dimension of digital competence, it contributes to redefining the role of teachers in the digital and green transitions promoted across Europe. In doing so, it supports a holistic vision of education aligned with the goals of the 2030 Agenda and the European Digital Education Action Plan, oriented toward a future in which technology and sustainability progress hand in hand.
We look forward to receiving your valuable contributions.
