Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Sustainable resources management has become a global governance priority, central to addressing transboundary environmental challenges such as climate change, biodiversity loss, desertification, and resource scarcity. Over the last three decades, more and more studies have approached the topics of sustainable resources development, planning and management, including land, water, energy, forests, biodiversity, and minerals.

Advancing sustainable resources management means improving how we use, protect, and restore natural resources (such as land, water, forests, minerals, and energy) so that their benefits can continue to be enjoyed by present and future generations without degrading the environment. The existing literature emphasizes multi-level, polycentric governance (local, regional, national, international), and the role of institutions (laws, customary rules, and markets) in enabling sustainable resource use.

In this context, a better understanding of the sustainable resources management is very important in order to advance to the proposed next steps in academic research: expand public–private partnerships in green innovation;  foster regional cooperation across shared ecosystems; encourage citizen science and local monitoring.

The aim of this Special Issue, titled “Advancing Sustainable Resources Management”, is to highlight new approaches for sustainable natural resources consumption and management. This Special Issue focuses on the planning, utilization, conservation, and restoration of natural resources to ensure their long-term availability and ecological integrity.

We invite theoretical, methodological, and empirical studies from various areas related to the topic of sustainable resources management. Sustainable resources management is inherently transdisciplinary (ecology, economics, political science, geography, and applied technology) and operates at multiple scales (from local to regional and global). Multidisciplinary approaches focus on using available resources efficiently, equitably, and responsibly to meet human needs while preserving ecological integrity for future generations.

For this Special Issue, original research articles and reviews are welcome. Research areas may include (but are not limited to) the following:

  • Land and ecosystem management;
  • Water resources management;
  • Biodiversity and forests;
  • Waste and pollution control;
  • Sustainable territorial development;
  • Case studies of sustainable natural resources consumption and management;
  • New technologies that support sustainable resources management.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. National parks, such as Domogled-Valea Cernei and Cozia, alongside protected areas like the Mehedinți Plateau Geopark or the Field of Lapiezuri in Ponoare, represent key assets for attracting tourists interested in nature and sustainability. This study investigates how tourists perceive sustainable ecotourism in Romania’s South-West Oltenia Region and identifies the primary determinants of their travel preferences. Specifically, it examines shifts in destination choices, the orientation toward safer and more sustainable locations, and changes in trip frequency and duration. Data were collected between June and December 2025 via a structured questionnaire administered to 500 visitors to these protected areas. To test the research hypotheses, the data were analyzed using multiple statistical methods, including regression analysis, the Chi-square test, an independent-samples t-test, Pearson correlation, and Analysis of Variance (ANOVA). The statistical results largely confirmed the proposed hypotheses. Notably, a significant relationship between tourist age and visit frequency was identified, indicating distinct behavioral patterns across age groups. Furthermore, perceptions of service quality varied significantly by gender, highlighting divergent experiences and expectations between male and female visitors. Full article

Dynamic Relationships in Circular Economy Systems: An Integrated Perspective of Resource-Based View, Stakeholder Theory, and System Dynamics

As global resource depletion and environmental challenges continue to intensify, the circular economy has emerged as a critical strategy for firms pursuing sustainable development. This study integrates the perspectives of circular economy, the resource-based view (RBV), and stakeholder theory, and incorporates a system dynamics approach to construct a causal feedback model of circular economy systems. First, through a comprehensive literature review and systems thinking, this study develops a causal loop diagram (CLD) that captures the dynamic interactions among key elements, including firms, resources, design, products, consumers, recycling, and waste, thereby illustrating the underlying mechanisms of circular economy operations. Subsequently, the CLD is transformed into a structural equation model (SEM), and empirical analysis is conducted using 134 valid questionnaire responses. The results indicate that significant and positive causal relationships exist among the constructs. In particular, resource-based design advantage is identified as the core driving factor of the system, influencing waste reduction through circular recycling and resource circulation mechanisms. Moreover, the interaction between reinforcing feedback loops and balancing feedback loops forms a dynamic equilibrium within the circular economy system. The findings not only validate the theoretical framework of circular economy systems but also provide practical implications for firms in terms of resource allocation, product design, and recycling management, thereby facilitating resource circulation and sustainable development.
