Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) is central to achieving the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals by fostering sustainable thinking, skills, and behaviors across societies. In recent years, e-learning and digital education have emerged as key enablers for delivering ESD at scale, particularly in response to technological advancements, socio-economic inequalities, and global disruptions to traditional education systems.
This Special Issue examines innovative e-learning approaches, digital tools, and pedagogical models that support the effective integration of sustainability principles into education. Its scope includes higher education, lifelong learning, and professional training, addressing technological, organizational, social, and policy-related dimensions of sustainable digital education. This Special Issue will advance theoretical, empirical, and applied research that evaluates how e-learning contributes to measurable sustainability outcomes, such as accessibility, equity, environmental impact reduction, and long-term educational resilience.
While the existing literature has largely explored ESD and e-learning as separate research streams, this Special Issue usefully supplements prior research by offering an integrated perspective that connects digital education innovations with sustainability assessment, monitoring, and policy implications. By highlighting interdisciplinary and evidence-based studies, this Special Issue contributes to the broader sustainability discourse by identifying scalable, data-driven, and inclusive e-learning solutions that support sustainable development across diverse socio-economic contexts.
