Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Recently, global awareness regarding the general importance of sustainability and building structures’ sustainability in particular has increased. Many urban areas worldwide are prone to earthquakes, which necessitates accurate seismic evaluation frameworks for existing structures. Despite the continuous global expansion of infrastructure in urban areas and the wealth of available seismic evaluation methods for determining safety and serviceability, there is a lack of sustainable seismic evaluation methods that address economical, environmental, and social aspects and integrate them into the existing procedures. Nowadays, these aspects are given the highest priority, due to the rapid expansion of existing urban areas and an urgent need for comprehensive seismic evaluation methods that consider sustainability as well as safety and serviceability.

This Special Issue aims to present state-of-the-art research articles on this topic. The scope of this Special Issue includes structures and infrastructure (e.g., buildings, bridges, cultural heritage, lifelines, etc) as well as research focused on the seismic evaluation of structures, resilience-based design, seismic life cycle cost, fragility assessment, next-generation performance-based design, and sustainable evaluation methods for structural design and construction. Applications of new methods in sustainable seismic evaluation such as machine learning, deep learning, and retrofitting using smart materials and components are also welcome. We encourage contributions dealing with the following:

  • Frameworks that consider sustainability in the seismic evaluation of structures;
  • Methodologies and/or case studies concerning the resilient/sustainable retrofitting of structures;
  • Combined approaches that consider both sustainability and performance-based evaluation of structures;
  • Numerical/experimental studies addressing interactions between sustainability/resilience and energy-efficient structural retrofitting of structures;
  • Approaches addressing economic, environmental, social aspects, and/or life cycle cost analysis in seismic evaluation of structures.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Sustainability is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2400 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
