Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Land use and mobility shape our societies through their economic, environmental, and social impacts, and are closely intertwined domains—land use determines where activities take place across a given territory, thereby influencing travel patterns and logistics; at the same time, accessibility plays a crucial role in influencing land use distribution.

Because of this close relationship between land use and mobility, significant societal changes and innovations affect both domains. Contemporary examples include electric vehicles, micro- and active mobility, proximity-oriented development and 15-minute city strategies, on-demand public transport services, autonomous vehicles, parking planning strategies, intelligent transport systems, unmanned aircraft systems for passengers and freight transport, sustainable road infrastructure, telecommuting, energy-efficient transport, and sustainable urban planning.

The challenges and opportunities posed by these disruptions vary significantly depending on the geographical context. Densely populated urban areas often struggle with congestion, limited space for new infrastructure, and pollution from diffuse sources like vehicles and heating systems. In contrast, rural communities often contend with low population densities, which discourage the implementation of services and an attractive public transport network.

This Special Issue calls for research that leverages today’s technological advancements in transport and urban renewal to address current challenges and opportunities, including economic growth, climate change mitigation and adaptation, well-being, energy efficiency and clean energy, spatial justice, and social equity. Specifically, this Special Issue aims to provide international organisations, governments, municipalities, private companies, citizens, and scholars with valuable insights into how transport and urban planning strategies can contribute to the sustainable development of both urban and rural areas.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Sustainability is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2400 CHF (Swiss Francs).
