Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

This collection of papers will center on the concept of “behavioral eco-wellness”, defined as “the study of how individual choices, behaviors, and habits impact both personal health and environmental sustainability.” This Special Issue will edit articles from experts working in areas such as active transportation, dietary intake for health and sustainability, nature immersion, and seeking positive solutions to eco-anxiety resulting from climate change.

The emerging field of behavioral eco-wellness targets the investigation and improvement of the choices, behaviors and habits that support the co-benefits of human health and environmental sustainability. Human health is defined broadly to include both mental/psychological and physical/biological health. The aspirational goal of eco-wellness can be defined as “living life to maximize health, happiness, and environmental sustainability.” Eco-wellness can be thought of as a bidirectional process: behaviors that bring health can support sustainability; and protecting and experiencing nature can support mental, physical, and social health.

This Special Issue will include papers on the health and environmental co-benefits of behaviors such as active transportation (walking and biking rather than driving) and healthy dietary intake (shifting dietary intake towards vegetables, fruits, whole grains and nuts, and away from animal-based foodstuffs). Studies investigating the potential co-benefits of changes in purchasing and other economic activities may also be included. Descriptions of and potential solutions to the emerging mental health crisis of “eco-anxiety” will be included.

I welcome the submission of review papers that describe the state of the science, empirical studies based on observational and experimental studies, and papers exploring methodological issues and theoretical aspects of behavioral eco-wellness. One major question is whether the desire to help the environment can help people improve their health behavior habits. A corollary is whether the health benefits of making sustainable transportation, dietary, and purchasing choices can act as leverage towards better society-level sustainability behaviors.

The specific papers that will be included in this Special Issue will, of course, depend on the expertise and enthusiasm of contributors.
